It looks like some slimebag just bought the unpaid debts of the previous owner of your number.
I have been getting repeated calls for the past 2 weeks from this number. I am floored. I have had this cell phone for ABOUT 2 years and all of a sudden I am getting calls for someone I have never heard of. Only 4 people have my cell phone number. I remember when I first got this number I almost requested a new number because of all the wrong numbers. It took me a while but people finally stopped calling this person. Now out of the blue people are calling again - or rather - just this number.
Left message, after a full minute of blank tape, said to call 1-800-860-0644
for a debt collection, but did not say who this was for??? Then stated their main office was in Virginia.
They also called from three other NEW Numbers, this month, but did not leave a message. I just keep blocking their numbers. They never say who these calls are for, and they seldom leave a message. Most times, they get my Voice Mail, use up 1-2 minutes of blank tape, then hang-up.
Find out about their illegal activities, trying to collect old SOL - STATUTE OF LIMITATION expired debts from clueless people!
Google: "portfolio recovery scam".
Report them to the Federal Trade Commission, Better Business Bureau or your State Attorney General - and block their calls:
Google: "phone call blockers" - they can be purchased for little money at eBay
Some call blockers:
• Uniden DECT1288 blocks up to 20 numbers, plus Private and Unknown, with the reject tone, without ringing the phone.
• Panasonic KX-TG106 blocks up to 30 numbers, plus all unidentified callers, with a busy tone, after the phone rings once.
• JF Teck Caller ID with Ring Controller blocks up to 70 numbers, and can be set to always allow up to 100 to ring through.
By the way, if you want to set up your phone to forward their calls to the Federal Trade Commission, here's the number to use:
These pests buy very old junk debts for pennies on the dollar with expired statue of limitation, than use illegal harassment tactics trying to intimidate uninformed individuals to pay money for this junk debt, which is noncollectable since the statue of limitations has long expired. Never ever agree to pay ANYTHING to these law breaking rats, since by doing so you would void your statue of limitation protection. Google: \"Portfolio Recovery Associates Scam\" to find out more about their lawless behavior, send a letter requesting validation of debt [Google how to do so] and report them to your Attorney General, the FTC. They have many law suits pending against them. Don\'t fall for their scam - block their calls, or send a \"cease and desist\" letter [Google] or simply ignore them, or answer and sing a song or whatever. Fight these slimy roaches!! Good luck!
SCAM ALERT Dec 13th, 2010
Portfolio Recovery and Anchor Receivables:
Call your local phone company to see if they have a service called "Call Intercept".. there is a monthly charge to have this service. With "Call Intercept", you can block any number in the United States. I have "Call Intercept" on my home phone thru Verizon and I am able to block 25 numbers. The person calling your number will get a recording saying "THE PERSON YOU ARE CALLING DOES NOT ACCEPT CALLS FROM THIS NUMBER, GOOD BYE." It's GREAT blocking Portfolio Recovery Associates from calling all day from different numbers. I am hoping that Verizon will extend call count from 25 to 50 numbers.
Just more fuck-up punks trying (and I mean Trying)to collect debt...good luck assholes!
Called but no message. Portfolio Recovery has been calling me for months based on a debt my ex-wife ran up. I have tried to push them to go to court but they refuse. The last time they did so, on a differnt Credit Card, I responded as required by law and they didn't pursue it because they know they will lose. Seems they add a new number every few months. With modern technology, I am able to forward all their numbers direct to Voice Mail (never rings), so they don't even bother leaving messages anymore. Here are all the number I have collected:
Big surprise, Portfolio Recovery calling from yet another telephone number. A reputable business doesn't mask their caller id information or lie about their intentions.
Portfolio, keep calling and harrashing my family. They continue to pass a credit card that was defunct 10 plus years ago from one office to another. Next time they call, they will be forwarded to our state attorney general's office. Idiots were so stupid as to call the cemetary after my brother gave them the number and address of my brother's plot.
asked for humerto degado bad spelling sorry hispanic folk. let her know this is cell phone. do not know this guy sorry i can not help you.
I received a call and no message was left on the phone. I tried to block the number from calling my home and was unsuccessful. They constantly call 7 days a week
Very rude person asking for someone who does live here and was very rude..
Calling ME for a debt my ex husband owes. I divorced him four years ago, nearly 5, and they still harass me over something that I have nothing to do with. They keep it up I'll be contacting the authorities.

Don't know who they are, but they call at different hoursand days, but they do not leave a message. All debts/bills that I have are current to the best of my knowledge. Did have some old ones when I was younger and foolish, but they have been written off.

After telling the gentleman on the other line that this was not my husbands debt and he had the wrong number, he straight out told me that the calls would not stop unless I verified my husbands social with them.
Portfolio Recovery Associates, owned by the master scammer Steven D Fredrickson, might be the biggest scam operation on this planet. Steven D Fraud should be his name. Don't ever communicate with them and NEVER send them any money, or it will only get worse.
This call came in on my private cell phone # I called it back some rude female by the name of Lisa insisted that she couldn't help me if I wouldn't give her my account # or phone #. Look I don't owe any unpaid debts. I wouldn't have known it was Vehicle Recovery if their automated machine hadn't told me right before I was to push 1 for english. I agree with jessica I don't have the patience for this BS***. I'm not giving them my personal information to get them to stop calling. I will however report them to DNC, FCC, TCPA, AND AARP.
Threatining calls on my cell to me about someone I don't even know that I guess owes them. I told them that I don't know the guy they are looking for and they said unless I find him they will destroy my credit. Who do they think they are and why do they harass me? DNC, FCC TCPA even AARP complaints have gone unanswered. Now they call wanting MY personal information. Is this legal? I'm not telling them anything but that they need to stop calling me. I am a 64yr widow and have not the patience for such things.

I do not any debt accounts that anyone should be calling me on. I printed out my credit reports this year, actually pretty good in these economic times but I have been getting phone calls from debt collectors at least two times daily mostly "unavailable", or other phone number unknown which I do not answer. Then I get mail material and they list an account that I had 15 yrs ago with any amount due unknown to me. Possibly could be someting from my ex-husband, we were divorced and now he is deceased. Then I get a "new" debt collector, which for the past two days leaves a message that they Portfolio Recovery, very creative name and they must be the hatchet people because the previous calls did not leave a message, the number left is 800.860.0644 say they are collecting a debt, and to call them, does not ask for a named person and does not tell you what the debt is but since this is like the fourth collector in the past several months, I assume it is the same.
How do I get these people off my back? I do not give out the number they are calling me on and they did call me at work one time whic I never give to anyone other than family and friends. I asked them to send me proof of this debt and they hung up on me.
I do believe these people are a scam ring.

Looks like this rat is jumping ship before it sinks. However, this criminal Steven D Fredrickson must not be allowed to profit off his scamming activities - he must be forced to return this money and punitive damages should be added. Scamming criminal behavior such as what he has done cannot be rewarded...it must be punished.
I've got them on call block with this fancy new phone I have. From their end it rings a few times and then goes to a busy signal. Makes me jump for joy!
The 'debt' they are calling about, no doubt, was written off 14 years ago. Since then I wrote a letter to one of the buyers of written off debt when they tried to collect on it and asked them to show me the records that show I owe THEM the debt. They can't show it. Do some homework and find that resouce, I found it online, send a letter certified, return receipt. You are done then with the issue.
i think mayby i'll answer and fake speaking korean or japanese
they've been calling with many different numbers for the past two years. Haven't answered yet, nor do I ever intend to answer. It's got to the point if they miss a day, I get worried that something may be wrong there....RIGHT. These pieces of crap think they are going to collect on a debt over 8 years ago that doesn't even appear on my credit report. I think its time to have them call my attorney

The first time they called they identified themselves as Porfolio Recovery and they were calling for their client to collect a debt. I asked them to send me the information via USPS. They refused and hung up. Now I just ignore the 3 to 5 calls a day from the many different numbers that they use. I love my new phone, it allows me to turn the ringer off on many different numbers, including Unavailable & Private.

This company claims the you are delinquent in a student loan and the are collecting for it. The ask you to verify your the year of your loan. It appears to be an attempt to get your voice saying a number. The only way to stop them is a call blocker. Note: The rotate the last four numbers, but the first six numbers remain. GThey are very rude.
This place keeps calling my dad for a debt from 1990, which was almost 20 years ago

2nd time today. no message. Wonder if they are checking to see if anyone is at home so they can send someone?
Just someone else to add to my block list...
Waited after my "hello" and got silence.
They call several times a day asking for someone who doesn't live here. Each time they are told that person doesn't live here, but they keep calling. Asked several times to stop calling. They keep calling.
I had been receiving calls from these jerks for months. They were using all kinds of different phone numbers but thanks to this website I know they were all from this Portfolio Recovery Associates. After answering the first one and telling them they had the wrong number (asked for someone that did not and never had lived with us) I just started ignoring their calls. But after several months of constant calls I finally sent a certified cease and desist letter to them in March. I received the signed return receipt card showing that the letter was delivered and signed for on March 30. Well, guess who called us last night. So now I guess my next step is to take them to court. Stupid idiots.
These guys are ruthlessm they never stop calling. Any try this?

Recorded msg saying calling from Porfolio Recovery Serrvices about a debt Please call back 877-803-0008
now. I am on DNC and have no debts and all bills paid on time for 40 + years !@!!! This has got to be a bottom feeder and scam. They can write me a letter and I'll just let my Attorney General handle it - he loves stuff like this and always wins !!!
Caller ID: unknown
Caller: Portfolio Recovery
Caller Type: Collection Agency
These people are like a dog with a bone. They keep calling here and left a msg. once for somebody I've never heard of. I have written to them asking them not to call, but it continues, so I finally filed a complaint with the state attorney general's office. We'll see.
These people call me at least three times a day. They never leave a message if I leave the machine to answer it. They called the other day and I told them not to call my house and they did it again today. I got into a screaming match with the woman telling her not to call my house ever again and to put me on their do not call list. She kept talking and I just kept telling her do not call my house ever again and that are dumb idiots lol.

SAID TRYING TO COLLECT A TELEPHOPNE BILL FROM TEXAS FROM 1995. I LIVE IN LITTLE ROCK. SHE WAS A BITCH.
I answered and it was a recording claiming to be debt collector asking me to return their call about an important matter and asked that I call 888-860-0644
. When I called that number I got another message saying the number had been changed to 10-15-15-8000 and there would be a $5.95 charge. I hung up. I just reported the call on the FTC website and called my Comcast carrier. Comcast said that no charges have appeared on my bill yet (it's only been a couple of hours).
just called here again!! asking for someone that does not live here!! the guy was a moron. I told him to stop calling here and he accused me of yelling at him. i told him that i wasn't and that i do not know that person and to stop calling and he hung up on me.
They called 4 times within 1 hour and left no message.
get calls from this number daily on my cell phone. I don't answer calls that I don't recognize the number so I have not spoken to anyone. So far, they haven't even left messages.. they just call. I finally decided to google the number to find out who they are.. so ok.. they are one of those bottom feeders that buy junk debt that have expired statue of limitations and they like others try to bully you into settling something they have no business even trying to collect! Educate yourself and check out www.creditinfocenter.com it's a very cool website and has lots of sample letters to send to these bottomfeeders. There is a process you follow. If they fail to cease and desist, you can file suit on the basis of harrassment. The sample letters have the info you need. Not only do these bottom feeders have to validate the debt, but they have to be licensed to collect in the state you reside. Many aren't! So good luck!!!

Original call was a "robocall" from "Portfolio Recovery Associates" saying it was regarding debt collection. They left an 800 number but I just called back on the 877 number that came up on my caller ID. After waiting several minutes to speak to a live operator, the first thing the man said was "name and account number please." I just responded "You called me, a robocall on my phone number." He asked if I received the call on the number I was calling him from and I responded yes. He said they were looking for "Matthew _______ (my last name)" I said that's my son, he's a minor. They then said, "Matthew M ______?" (My son is Matthew N ______) so I said, no that's not him. They said they had the wrong number (yeah, right) and they'd remove my number from their call list. What a scam! This has NOTHING to do with debt collection, they're just trying to get an account number from you - ANY account number - so they can debit/charge to it. Don't fall for it!
These are the most unprofessional people I have ever dealt with...when told they had a wrong number, the woman called me a liar...rude rude rude and very harrassing
Caller has problems speaking - sounds like he is trying to sell Viagra
Caller is trying to collect donations for Bush retirement.

Dorothea, there is something you can do. You have to write a Cease and Desist letter to this company. The letter must state that they are to stop calling you at the phone number they have and also state that they are calling a for a person that does not reside at that number. You can go on to state that any further calls will be in violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. You can search on the net for examples of these Cease and Desist letters and alter them to cover your situation. You MUST send the letter to them certified mail with signature receipt requested. If this company violates the FDCPA you have the right to take them to small claims court and sue. Keep all documentation that you can.
For more information on how to stop these calls, look up the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and read. Knowledge is power and it is on your side.
Called about disputed debt from 11 years ago that we had long since forgotten about and creditor had agreed to cancel.
Very rude and demanding people who call.....they call 2 to 3 times daily from early morning to late evening 7 days a week.
Keeps calling and leave no message. When I did answer once they asked for a male. I told them no one by that name lived here; which is the truth. They still continue to call and leave no message. They call seven days a week sometimes; starting at 8:45am and as late as 8:50pm. Wish there was something one could do to prevent these calls especially if they are not for you.
Someone named David Timms called this evening he sounded like an old drinking buddy asking for my husband by his first name. When I asked who he was he told me but then asked who I was, when I would not respond to him and asked how he knew my husband he just repeated asked if I was his wife....Duh... and refused to answer how he knew him or what he needed. If this is a debt collection agency or any other business they should act in a professional manner and ask for people by thier proper names not like they have always known them. It really creeped me out!
My and my parent's phone numbers have received calls from this number. We simply don't answer it.
They call all the time. Ask for my SSN or any part of it. I've asked them to stop calling. They say they are collecting an old debt but won't give me any proof. I think these people are scammers. They won't answer my questions or send me anything in writing. I'm going to report them to the law.
Calls at 8.30 Am and 8.30 Pm
Annoying message - was open line for a long time, then recorded message to call them back. Who? For what? Deleted it
If this number calls my phone again, I am reporting them to a consumer lawyer. Debt collectors must send a letter to you, before they call you.
Besides, I don't owe this debt collector!!
told them many times they got the wrong number, i dont even know the person and they keep calling. theyve said they took me off the list like 5 times now.
Showed up on my received calls list, although they didn't bother to leave a message so it's apparently not important to them. I have no way to know what they are calling about, but their message when I called them talked about debt recovery. As far as I know we are fine in that regard. Have some debt but are paying it off and nothing is currently past due.
I got a call from this number today and was referred to call back a number previously posted by someone else I tried both numbers and got the same kind of hold voice then music then please hold. I think I will follow the advice in one of the previous posts if they call again to call the FTC...so thanks.
Didn't answer - Didn't leave a message. Had called before.
Have been receiving calls from this number and other numbers, belonging to Portfolio Recovery Associates, sometimes as many as two or three per day for several weeks now. It's a collection agency based in VA. I don't owe anyone anything. As others have stated, they will call asking you to call them back. I talked to my phone company about them, and they referred me to the FCC. Called the FCC and they referred me to the FTC, (Federal Trade Commission) The FTC took my call, and started a case file on them, and the FTC agent advised me not to contact them from my home phone. They need several complaints to take any action, as they will not act on individual complaints. The number to the FTC is: 1-877-382-4357
. Complaining about these knuckleheads on a web site won't do anything, but getting a government agency involved just may shut them down.
This is from Portfolio Recovery Associates, a very low class collection agency.
NEVER SPEAK WITH THESE IDIOTS.
There computer calls and asks you to call them back. The reason they do this is they have a system that when you call back, they have the phone number you are calling from including the name of the owner of that phone, they have the address of the phone number you are calling from. In other words, when you call back you are doing their work for them.
NEVER RETURN THIS CALL.
NEVER SPEAK WITH A DEBT COLLECTOR AND NEVER GIVE THEM YOUR BANKING INFORMATION - PERIOD.
said they were a debt collection agency...I have excellent credit.......called on a Sunday..
called with a computer telling me to call a 800 number for important message but refuses to tell me who they are looking for. tell me who you are looking for and mabey ill call back.
I picked up and didn't say anything and they didn't either.
called them back and they are looking for some bonnie person. told them to take my number off their caller list im not her and the lady refused.

zombie debt collectors bottom feeding scum. Call once a day every day or more. Even Sundays and holiday. Send them a C&D letter won't do any good to tell them to stop calling. Do not call list doesn't work for bill collectors and would not matter to them anyway. Report them and send the letter. Check www.budhibbs.com
After two more days of non-stop recorded messages on my phone I contacted this company. A very nice lady answered the phone, looked up my phone number in under 30 seconds, said the call was to collect a debt from Kevin Roberts. When I told her I do not know a Kevin Roberts and have had this phone number for 2-1/2 years she very politely responded "let me take care of this for you" and assured me I will get no more phone calls. Very pleasant, quick phone call. Now I'm sorry I posted such a negative post a couple days ago!!
I have received approximately 2 dozen phones calls from this debt collector during the last two weeks. They identify the company as "Portfolio Recovery Associates" and leave a Norfolk Virginia address. I attempted to return their calls but am left on hold after being told all agents are busy. I have no debts. I have no reason to speak with them. I am tired of calls at all hours of the day and night. If their message would give me a clue as to what debt they are attempting to collect or from whom they want to collect the debt I may have more interest in contacting them - they don't even know if they have are harrassing the right person as my answering machine doesn't have my name on the message.
These people call 7 days a week, leave no message so I called them back and asked what they wanted. They wanted to know my name and address, told them it was none of their business AND I WAS ON THE DO NOT CALL REGISTRY but they continue to call even though I am not the person they are looking for. I continue to file dily conplaints against them but nothing has stopped them.

IT appears to me reading responces last week regarding this matter that BRADSHAW is concocting accusations where no substance exist. Clearly the concern is BRADSHAWS hiring practices. If true that is most inappropriate. Creating positions for friends and in one instance assingning one friend 3 cars?, Certainly misuse of public funds, you Mr Bradshaw know firsthand what is inappropriate, YOU patice it.Abuse of office, misuse of public funds, and more. Perhaps someone needs to file a complaint with the States Atty. Office regarding you. If you had exercised any comunicatve or management skills this issue would be nonexistent.

...It was to collect a debt....They called from # 877-803-0008....I left a message not knowing anything.....Now I see many others have had this issue...
I also let the answering machine pick up the "800" calls. When this number called, no message was left. They just hung up.
