If they are calling back repeatedly, dial *57 after the hangup! Or whatever will trace nuisance calls in your area - we have to do it 3x to effect a trace and it costs $1.50 each time we hit *57 - so it would cost you instead of them. I suppose it's supposed to be for scary callers but if you can get an official trace going that shd back them off.

Got some call from a guy trying to sell SEO marketing services for my business, like first page google rankings, etc.
He was pretty aggressive even though I told him right away I wasn't interested. I hung up on him after he kept pushing.
Probably calling from an offshore call center.

Two calls so far today (2/26/08). First call was a lady saying she was calling from the "happy lucky day center". I slammed the phone down. Second call was nobody on the other end, just call center noises and they hung up first. I hope they call more so I can spew some vulgarities and use racial epithets.

Do not speak to these people. This is most likely a SLAMMER. They record your conversation, take your "yes" answers and re-record with new questions. So now your "yes" has signed you up for something on your phone bill and they have your voice recorded saying that you want the service. This happened to us last year with a different co. and it took me 3 months to get the $90 off the business phone line. This time, I programmed the number into my desk phone directory as "Spammer" so when they call again (which they have called close to 30 times in the past 3 days) i pick up the line and click it off to hang up immediately. I run a small business and can not afford to tie up my business phone line or be slammed. BEWARE - Nasty scammers that don't play by the rules!

 Dec 13th, 2007
This number keeps calling, my caller ID keeps showing the same number, 800-592-9196, which never leaves a message. This is harassment and happens a dozen times a day, every day, since a press release that mentioned me was posted online. If the others in the press release are getting hounded, too, they must be pretty disgusted. There was one spam email, trying to sell me a plaque with my award on it for almost two hundred bucks, and then the calls started. It's been ten days and they're consistent. They must lead really boring lives and/or they are getting a lot of gullible folks to deal with them. I hope they give up soon, because I'm not going to take their calls or say anything to them. Phishing and spamming is illegal, which is doubtless why they have the modus operandi described by others.

They call my cellphone daily, on the hour, every day of the week. I refuse the call, sending it to vmail every time. They seem to take a few days off every now & again & then start up again. I *never* answer these calls for all the reasons listed. The really "fun" thing is. They'll go on a calling binge for about a month each year. Then they stop. A year later, they start up again. Why in the world can't these lose their 800# privledges?! Ugh!

*Yes, I'm on the "do not call" lists!

After reading the email, I think it's clear what the ThatsGreatNews scam is: if you click on their link they will ship you their product and then, if you don't manage to get the product back to them in the next ten days, they will bill you $180. They will say they have the legal right to demand payment from you, because the wording of the email states that your mere act of clicking the link is a request to have the product sent to you. Let me state here and now, for the record: I do not want any products sent to me from ThatsGreatNews!!!

Terry's story resonates. I was featured in a full page news article yesterday. Today so far I have been called 3 times on my cell phone by the 1-800-592-9196 number. The first time I let it go to voice mail, and no message was left. The next two times, I picked up, and there was no one on the other line, so I hung up. And what do you know, here in my spam folder I have an email from sales@thatsgreatnews. If this Stephanski fellow has his people continue contacting me, I am not going to be happy. Thank you for posting his phone number.

I noticed the great feature in The News Leader that was published recently and wanted to make sure that someone from my company contacted you to see if you wanted a digital proof of that recent article/recognition mounted on a beautiful display plaque that you could hang in your office or lobby.

My company, That's Great News, uses the original article and only the highest quality wood to create beautiful plaques from great features such as yours. In fact, you've probably seen our work in local restaurants, doctor's offices and boardrooms and I’d like to make sure your achievement receives similar recognition.

Don't let him bull#$%@ you with "it is a legal email because we have our address and a 'remove' option in case we reached you in error." You did not 'subscribe' to anything by appearing in local news. That they got your info by researching newspaper stories, then taking your story details and (I suoopse) Googling them to find your website or internet White Pages contact info, and THEN cold-calling (sometimes plus spamming) you AND referencing the newspaper story so you get past your initial telemarketer screeners is PROOF enough that this was not sent "in error". They contact you BY DESIGN on purpose with intent. "Error" indeed!

To Federal Trade Commission (copied to sender and associates)

Please take steps to halt this SPAMMER under the Can Spam act.
The sender seems to be using news reports to obtain business names
which are then used for unsolicited spam. This message could not
have been sent "in error" as it appears to be a product of active
research of news reports. The sender's use of "unsubscribe"
is deceptive since the recipient did not knowingly
"subscribe" to email solicitations by being featured in a news story.
On the same day that this email arrived, a telemarketer contacted the
business phone (which is registered with national Do Not Call) and
referenced the same news story. The caller refused to confirm her
obvious status as a telemarketer, did not acknowledge a
remove-from-call-list request, and refused to provide a callback number;
however, the phone recorded the incoming number and a
Do Not Call complaint will be sent to you under separate cover.
A plain text copy of the message precedes the original spam
in the original format.

Please FTC also see for your reference further public complaint
seemingly about the same SPAM/TELEMARKETING by the
same senders recorded here:

Obvious telemarketing callhouse but seemed like a real customer at first by mentioning a story about the business seen in the local newspaper. I've received similar calls as these posters. I too get the same message when calling the 800 number, a representative will be with you shortly, then we're sorry due to network difficulty we are unable to forward your message at this time, call back again. There is some fraudulent activity going on, and these poeple are posing as That's great news and or others. I filed a BBB complaint with Conneticut -where That's great news is out of. The caller today when I answered was Julia Snow, she spoke about an award plaque and something about me in the May 18 issue of our local newspaper. These people search personal information from you. I acted like I didn't know what she was talking about with regard to the newspaper article, I said What? She hung up on me. I received another call later today from Bianca, she said she was from That great news, again the same story as the caller Julia Snow about the newspaper article - when I continued to ask Bianca more questions about her company, she hung up on me too. Now what concerns me, if this was telemarketing, why didn't she try harder to sell me something? This has to stop - it's pure harrassment for every party concerned - It's deceptive practise and fraulent.

This number has called my workplace 4 times already today. Silence when you answer and circuits busy when you call them. When you are on the National Do Not Call you would think that it would be illegal for them to be calling so much. Is very aggravating to say the least.

Trying to operate a business here and answering calls which do not respond when you pick up -- just silence -- is quite a distraction when it happens several times every day!

They called me like 10 times in a matter of a week and when I tried to call back a machine would always pick up and tell me that the circuits were busy and then it would hang up on me. Finally they called today and what they wanted was to do a Health insurance comparison. Be careful when you get calls from this place they had my home address and they asked me for my work place.
