DC, debt collectors can be very shy about divulging business names until they know they have the alleged debtor on the horn. They are easily sued for privacy violations under FDCPA. That said, the same law gives you a right to know on demand both the rep's name (which can be an alias) and the firm he works for. If he's keeping out of trouble, the rep won't give up another word until you authenticate as the person of interest.

I picked up and said "hello" several times but no one replied. I did try calling the number back. An answering machine said "one moment, please" then a man picked up "this is Don can I help you?" I hung up--if this (company?) can't identify itself I don't see why I should talk to them. I'd still like to know who/what this is though; caller id showed only "Reno NV" and I don't know any person or business from that area.

If FNCB thinks you owe something, be sure to respond on real paper to its federally required dunning letter with a dispute and validation request, adding that you either restrict or revoke consent to call again. Given this agency's documented need to break laws to get at your assets, you should dispute even if you agree slightly with its claim.

If the account is not legally collectable, or it's simply not you they want, you're free to send a full cease-comm, cutting off all contact. Send all notices via USPS Certified with return card. The FTC and many consumer watchdogs explain how to draft them.

Learn how to exercise your FDCPA rights as an alleged debtor at FTC-dot-gov.

This is First National Collections Bureau, I got a letter in the mail from them a few weeks ago about a debt that they claim I owe that is not on my credit report and is past the statute of limitations. I rec'd calls from this number and others unknown and most
times there is no message. My policy now is to only answer
when there is a name or number that I reconize. When they do
leave a message it's not even for me and I live alone so there
is nothing to gain by calling my number.

These callers are running a scam and trying to open closed
collections. They don't even care if they have the right
person or not.

This company left a message that a "complaint had been filed against me" caller stated he was a "special investigator"...give me a break. I don't know who they are trying to call and I don't care. Just more harassment from dead beats that can't find legitimate work so they try to extort payments from people who don't owe money.

Been getting these calls 3-5 times a day for the past couple months with a message that cuts off. I found the call back number in one of the posts below 800-824-6191). Called them today and found out that they were actually looking for someone else. They asked if my name was "xxxx". I answered that I was not that person. Interesting that the name they gave me was person that a different collection agency called my number for several months ago. The associate who answered my call back was very nice and said that she would remove my number from their system since I was not the person they were trying to reach. We'll see if it works. :)

you can go to the FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection - Consumer Information https://www.ftccomplaintsassistant.gov/FTC_Wizaard.aspx?... File a report with them, each and every time they call. these are legal eagles who will take thes bottom feeders to task, for there low life bag of tricks. So far today, i have received calls from Portfolio Recovery numbers 620-662-8870 at 11:33 am - 775-412-4499 at 11:19 and 877-487-5583 at 8:20 am They never stop. Who ever this number belongs to, they have called nearly every day (2 or more times a day) for several months now. They almost always leave a message which is simply a woman's voice saying "hello" very fast and then hanging up. I feel like I am being stalked. I don't care if it is a bill collector or a telemarketer they could leave a better message on my phone besides "hello" followed by 'click' every single time they call. Either way, I will never answer my phone. You would think that after 5 months or more of never getting an answer from me, they would give up. If anything, they have just increased frequency of calls. I think it is time for a nationwide united class action lawsuit against every bill collector and telemarketer. If every American who has ever been harassed beyond a reasonable amount from these people banded together in a legal battle, it would be well over half of America against them. That would be one hell of a trial. Congress passing laws kind of stuff.

I WILL LET EVERYONE KNOW REAL QUICK HOW TO GET RID OF THESE IDIOTS & DON'T JUST DO THIS ONE TIME > COLLECT PHONE CALLS FROM THE SAME # ON THE (DIFFERENT) DAYS THEY HAVE CALLED & AFTER YOU HAVE COLLECTED YOUR DATA;GO TO YOUR INTERNET (WHATEVER STATE YOU ARE IN) > PULL UP THE STATE YOU LIVE IN > GO TO CONTACT THEN IF YOU ARE NOT SURE WHERE TO GO FROM THERE > CALL THE 1800# LISTED WHICH WOULD REALLY BE THE BEST WAY TO REPORT THESE CALLS & LET THE AG (ATTORNEY GENERAL) TAKE CARE OF THE CALLS > THEY HAVE ALREADY PICKED UP A LOT OF HACKERS MAKING THESE PHONE CALLS BECAUSE OF COMPLAINTS RECEIVED > INSTEAD OF WAITING FOR PAPERWORK TO COME IN THE MAIL, TALK WITH A HUMAN BEING > IF YOU ARE NOT SURE YOU ARE IN THE DEPT. YOU NEED TO BE, JUST TELL THE OPERATOR THAT ANSWERS YOU NEED THE AG THAT IS TAKING CARE OF SCAM PHONE CALLS > ONCE YOU ARE CONNECTED THEN LET THEM KNOW ALL ABOUT THE CALLS, WHETHER IT BE AT WORK, HOME OR BY CELL (WHICH MAY BE YOUR BUSINESS ALSO)> YOU CAN ALSO FILL OUT A COMPLAINT FORM ON THE INTERNET ABOUT THE EXACT SAME PHONE CALLS YOU CALLED IN & DUPLICATE YOUR CALLS. DON'T FORGET TO PUT THE TIME, DATE THEY CALLED & WHETHER IT BE WORK OR HOME.

ONE MAJOR POINT: WHEN FILLING OUT THE FORM ON THE INTERNET, IT WILL ASK YOU WHERE THE CALL CAME FROM OR WHO WAS THE CALLER > CONSIDERING IT CAME OVER THE PHONE & THEY DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING, JUST PUT > CALLED BUT SAID NOTHING, IS VERY HARRASSING & DISTURBS MY PLACE OF BUSINESS. THE FORM WILL GO THROUGH ! !

WHEN AN AG RETURNS YOUR CALL AFTER EVERYTHING IS DONE WHICH WILL TAKE "A WHILE", THEY WILL INTRODUCE THEMSELVES LETTING YOU KNOW WHO THEY ARE & WHO THEIR WITH. CHECK INTO THIS. I PROMISE YOU > IT WORKS! ! WHEN THEY CALL YOU, TAKE THEIR NAME, EXT.# & WHAT OTHER INFO.YOU CAN COLLECT.

THE SCAMMERS THAT ARE BEING & HAVE BEEN CAUGHT ARE HAVING TO PAY AT LEAST $20,000 A HEAD {IF NOT MORE} FOR EACH SCAMMER WORKING THAT PARTICULAR AREA PLUS GO TO JAIL ! !

They kept calling someone at our number. They DON'T CARE that we are not the people they are calling. WE OWE NOTHING AND NEVER HAVE! Some people assume because people get these obnoxious calls they are legitimate calls to collect a legitimate debt. If you watched "20-20" about this, you will know a lot of them are scams and criminals that are hoping some poor sucker will send them something...like the Mardi Gras...."throw me some beads mista"..

We found a very simple solution for all annoyance calls. We did some research on telephones and went to Best Buy and purchased a Panasonic phone Model KX-TG9333 DECT 6.0. This model has three handsets but you can get the same model with one, two or three. It allows you to block up to 20 phone numbers as long as you have Caller ID. It rings once or twice then disconnects the call. The caller can't get through. The readout on the phone and the "missed call" list shows "Call Blocked". It shows a very small "x" in a box to the right of the call to show you that it has blocked that call. Just make sure you let the phone ring once or twice to see if it's a blocked call or someone you want to talk to. WE LOVE IT!!!!

They have been calling my parents looking for me about a debt that was once past-due but was paid in full in 2005 here it is 2009 and they dont know my debt has been paid. I ran a credit report on myself to find out if someone had used my old credit card and the report shows my past-due debt paid in full!. They are scam artists looking up old debts and trying to collect, some people dont have to pay old debts because of the Statur of Limitations (SOL) but these jerks are praying on them anyway. From what I can find out they change their ph. numbers often as well as their mailing address. BBB has them as unsatisfactory (whatever that is suppose to mean). 800-824-6191 is number that is on the crap they sent me in the mail.

Received a call today from 775-412-4499 at 1:56 p.m. Today is a Friday. This was a call to my cell phone. I don't give out my cell phone number (which I thought was on the 'do not call list') except to family, friends and my doctor. So as I read this I wonder how they even got my number. I got a call from them and spoke to a Mona about a debt that was reportedly incurred in 2000 for an account that was charged off. I told them I had no such debt and they were mistaken. She tried using the "someone is using my personal info to get things" tactic, but I told her I had an account with that bank at one time. So then she told me that I was not collectible because of the statue of limitations had run out and although I voluntarily closed the account back then. I called the original account holder and they said I owed them nothing and that the account was closed by me and that I had nothing to worry about.
