Sallie Mae (or any lender for that matter) can call up to 8 times a day on EVERY phone number on the account, If you have a home phone, a work phone and a cell phone, they can legally call you 24 times a day, every hour on the hour. If you answer the phone and verify your information, you can request that they set your name out of the dialer system for a couple days to give you time before the next call. Also, The best option IS payment, all of SLM's "programs" are really quick fixes that are only going to hurt you in the long run. To those who have Hundreds of Thousands of dollars in Sallie Mae loans, don't expect to make payments less then $1000, if you were making only $150 dollar payments a month, AND accruing interest, it would take you over 100 years to pay off the loan, you really think they are going to let you do that? To NEW students/borrowers READ YOUR PROM NOTE CAREFULLY. and finally, NEVER EVER EVER REQUEST A FORBEARANCE! it is the worst thing you could do for yourself, it will cause you to gain compound interest and it can make you end up paying almost double of the original loan amount.

thank you, =]

Here's the thing...when you take out a student loan you sign a promissary note. In that, you basically sign that the lending company can use pretty much any means necessary to notify you that you are delinquent. This includes, calling your home, cell, work, all relatives, and even your neighbor's numbers to leave messages for you. I found this out the hard way (wasted some money on an attorney). Anyhow, you CAN fill out a "cease and dessist" (sp?) letter which means you don't want them calling you anymore. I would not advise this is you have a Parent PLUS loan, or a Stafford loan, or any other type of Federal loan being handled by Sallie Mae. If you do, your pretty much screwing yourself because they are just gonna take your tax return checks, and garnish your wages. Pretty much, what I should have done, and what I advise all others to do is PAY WHAT YOU CAN! If you send in partial payments, every month, they usually grant more time before defaulting you (and me)! Hope this helps...

BBB Representative,

I have mentioned several times to both to GRC (General Revenue) and Sallie Mae Representatives that it is both inconvenient and inappropriate when GRC (calling on behalf of Sallie Mae Collections) is calling me any earlier than 8am Pacific Standard time or on the weekends.

This morning (Sunday) as well as yesterday, I received several calls from phone number 877-672-9950 (GRC) without any voice message or contact information. All were received before 8am and another was received as early as 6:15am on Sunday morning! While at work I also received a phone message from a family member saying that GRC had contacted them. GRC not only disclosed the dollar amount that I owed, but that I was delinquent and they inferred she would be responsible if they were unable to get a hold of me. This family member is in no way related to these loans and was randomly called.

It is NEVER appropriate for any collections company to call my family member/neighbors/co-workers etc about my financial issues, nor do these have any influence in the situation. There would be no reason to contact them.

I understand my rights and I have notified both Sallie Mae and GRC that I have reported them for poor business practices. If their employees do not know my rights they should have them review the following link:

http://www.fair-debt-collection.com/rules/collection-calls-5.html

Particularly Section 805(a): Collection calls to consumers. If it happens again, you may expect a call from my attorney.

The company's real name is GRC, or General Revenue Corp. They are owned by Sallie Mae and do all of their collections for the company. GRC's Info is below, along with 3 easy steps on how to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau for Illegal Practices.

The following link takes you to a site which outlines what collection agencies are and are not allowed to do (like calling you outside of normal business hours at work, or whenever you specifically say it is inconvenient for you) - (http://www.fair-debt-collection.com/rules/collection-calls-5.html). They were recently sued for malpractice and if you read the link above you were probably a victim of malpractice, like myself. They are relentless!

These people call here several times a day asking for my husband saying his student loans are past due... they ask for his personal info.. After he refused to give it to them he called Sallie Mae directly.. they said his loans were NOT past due.. These people still call everyday and want us to send payments.. Funny thing is everytime I call Sallie Mae they say they never called and there employees seem to work out of India if this is so these people speak pretty good english.. Sallie Mae actually stopped payment on the money we sent to them because we were so over paid! I told them to quit calling and they said NO!! They also said they saw he made a payment of 80 dollars last week.. Ummm no he didnt..

Ask them for a written statement indicating the original creditor (if you owe anyone anything). When they send it, immediately send them a Cease Communication Letter. They legally MUST stop contacting you. See www.budhibbs.com and search on CEASE COMMUNICATION for a copy of the letter.

I've contacted this number (Sallie Mae) three times to tell them that I am NOT the person they are trying to reach and have no idea who that person is. Each time they told me that they removed my number from their database, yet I still keep getting periodic calls.

So now I'm going to give up 15 minutes of my time to write up a letter to Sallie Mae requesting they stop calling. At least then I'll have written proof that they're just being retarded douchebags.

actually our calls came from 702-804-4345. Shows up as OUT OF AREA or WCC. all research i've done and people i've talked to lead me to believe its the same company - Sallie Mae WCC out of Las Vegas. They had someone else's name but our phone number and would not listen to anything we told them. our police station told us to notify the Attorney General.

They just started calling and I had another which Verizons says they will prosecute.
Examples of unlawful calls include:

* Threat to Life (yours or someone else's)
* Bodily Harm
* Excessive, Obscene, or Harassing Calls
* Kidnapping
* Bomb Threats

Note: Excessive generally means more than five calls of this nature in a given day.

We regularly work with law enforcement agencies to resolve unlawful call complaints.
