Is this legal for a non-profit organization, Kids First, to be calling people and getting people to accept "free" movies? And, are they really "free" or is there a catch? I am sure Kids First is making some money doing this, don't you?

If you get a call from this number it is from Kidsfirst.org or Coalition for Children's Media in Sante Fe New Mexico. This is an organization that says it wants you to do a review of their movies and they are all about promoting good children's media but in fact they are really selling the movies for distributors who don’t want to pay for marketing. So they do it on the cheap and don't care how many folks it bothers. Check out how many movies they sell at this site, it is a lot. They use their non profit status to avoid telemarketing laws for the Federal Do Not Call Registry for telemarketeers. They also use an auto dialer which randomly calls with prerecorded messages from "John" who sounds real and confuses citizens and they do not identify themselves so if the call goes bad you won't know who it was to complain about. They use several numbers here are just a few:
617-245-9601
505-989-8076
505-247-1942
330-752-6187
202-747-7355
303-974-1804
505-225-5322
505-237-1942
505-382-6813
575-382-9984
877-700-6025
Google these numbers and you will see how many people are being harassed by this group on their new cell phones or home phones.
Call your state Attorney General's Office and make a formal complaint as well as the New Mexico Attorney General's Office. Also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.gov. I would just write up one short complaint and use it for all three. Once they see a pattern they will act. Kidsfirst is hoping that you the consumer and regulatory agencies don't put two and two together since they don't identify themselves. Also you can go to kidsfirst.org website and contact all the sponsors on their site and let them know how kidfirst has treated you and with their deceptive practices. They think they found a loop hole but they need to play fair and especially if they are using a children’s platform to hide behind. If they are legit then why do they need so many reviews? Why not use the reviews from folks who already bought movies? Did Siskel and Ebert sell the movies they reviewed? No, because it was a conflict of interest. Kidsfirst is well aware how this bothers folks and you can tell by what folks who post about their calls to Kidsfirst. They just don't care and why don't they just use the Do Not Call Registry if they are such a caring non profit? When you ask them who is funding this organization Ann Church the so called V.P. of Marketing referred me to their tax form. When I asked who was on their Board of Directors she referred me to their tax form. You may ask your state if they really consider this a non profit organization at all, if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck then it is a duck (small business selling movies). Do they owe your state any type of taxes if they are hiding behind non profit veil and really operating like a small business? You should ask your state regulatory agencies. They talk the talk but when you peel the onion here they are just a thinly veiled marketing arm for movie distributors. Whether they support good media or bad media they are telemarketing and selling movies and should be a normal store front like others and have to abide by the same laws as the others and honor the Federal Do Not Call Registry. Is that really asking that much? Check to see if your state prohibits organization from using automatic random dialers with prerecorded messages that don’t identify who they are with no matter if they are a non profit or business entity.

A woman called my cell phone (Verizon) from Kids First and said my "friend" Michelle referred me to them to answer a survey that would take about 90 seconds. I asked, "Michelle who?" I heard a weird noise twice, and then a man's voice said the full name of my ex-husband's wife! (Thanks a lot, Michelle). The woman came back on and asked the exact same question she'd asked before. I then asked her, "Is this a computer?" She laughed and replied, "Do I sound that bad?" I answered, "Yes." At this, "she" admitted she was a computer, but a "live operator" was listening in. Then she proceeded to tell me about some family-friendly DVD's she would send me, and somewhere in there, I heard the price of $30. I interrupted, "This isn't a survey. This is a sales call." She talked right over me. I repeated it two more times, before she stopped and said, "I'm sorry, were you saying something?" I repeated it again and said I wasn't interested. She kept on talking. I hung up. Since my ex-husband's wife's full name was provided to me as the one who referred me to them, I expect that she purchased the DVDs and maybe got a discount by giving out other numbers to call.

I have recieved an viewed the movies that were sent and my grandchildren seem to enjoy them. The 4 year old and 3 year old loved the ones about the bunnies. The older children 7 years, and 8 years, enjoyed the mystery one. The content was very good, and the main part was the vaulues taught in the films.

The caller claimed to be "Jesse", calling to send me a couple of free DVDs. Eventually, I got the impression I might be talking to a computer which was analyzing my responses for what to say next. After unsuccessfully trying to ask it a sports question, I stupidly asked "Are you a human?" and it made some excuse and hung up on me. I should have asked something like, "if I have three apples and you take one, how many to I have left?" *sigh*

They must be calling random numbers because I just received a call on my cell phone that I only use for emergencies. Nobody but my husband, his parents and one school have this number. I didn't answer because I never answer if I don't recognize the number. If they ever call again their azz will get reported.

Only very few people have my number and i NEVER put it on the internet or give it to anyone else other than the people i know, so how they got my number is a little creepy.

I just received this call on my cell phone. The caller stated that he was with Children First and stated they were not selling anything but wanted to send me two movies to look at and that they would (supposedly) pay me to watch them. He went on to state that PTA's and Mothers are pushing for more family oriented movies with less violence etc. I told him he was really wasting his time, since I do not have children and asked to be removed from their call list. At least now I know not to answer another call from this phone number!!!

They called me on my cell phone back in April. They were told not to call back. I was told I would be removed from their calling list. Then today they called not only my phone BUT my husband phone twice while he was at work. He was worried that our son who is in the service was trying to reach us. He could not answer because he was at work. They will try to get you to let them mail you movies to preview then if you like them buy them at "low" price, "below cost".

Report them to the FCC. http://esupport.fcc.gov/complaints.htm

I did and so did my husband.

It shows up on my YouMail.com as Kids First when they called today but showed unknown on my cell phone. When they called back in May the guy said he was with Children's Network.

Jack, thank you for all your information. I just received my first phone call today and knew immediately it was a scam. It was from this number and about my car warranty going up. However, I did press "2" in the recorded voicemail because supposedly it would remove me from their call list (which I know now is bogus). I am going to file a formal complaint in my state. I also rceived a call shortly after from 505-247-1942 and did not answer because of the previous call. I was worreid that even by pressing "2" they could charge my phone account with extra calls and fees, but it seems they are trying to get your information, which I did not provide. Thanks again for the good information.
