Shortly after putting in a Craigs List ad with my phone # included, I received a call saying someone wanted to relay a message to me. I waited 12 minutes then I hung up. The operator was nice with nothing vulgar he was just polite.

Called at 12:30am. Said they were a third party between a text call or hard or hearing call. I asked who was calling and they said they didn't know and I could ask the party during a pause of their reading. The content was inappropriate, and I hung up.

This is one of the phone numbers to a server used by Verizon IP Relay. Relay is a federally mandated system intended to facilitate communication between people who are deaf or hard of hearing and people who are hearing. The system is exploited by teenagers and other immature people to anonymously prank call their friends, enemies, etc. It is also exploited by scammers mostly in W. Africa to contact small business and people who are selling things thru want ads, etc. The scammers try to pass fake checks, money orders, or Western Union payments and get "overpayments". If you are a small business owner or selling something thru want ads, be VERY skeptical! Relay operators work under strict confidentiality. They HONESTLY have no information about the content of the call or who is calling. Please do not get hostile towards the relay operator. You may want to ask for the IP Relay Customer Service number and see what they can do to help you block IP Relay calls. If you do not want a relay call, simply hang up and continue hanging up when you receive them!

in reply to "DM" ...Those are 2 of the numbers I also have gotten multiple calls from. I am also furious as to how they recieved my number, and also that from reading the comments people have left on this page, I am amazed that there are freaks out there who are actually getting away with these ridiculous, and beyond pathetic phone calls.

This is one of the phone numbers to a server used by Verizon IP Relay. Relay is a federally mandated, government regulated system intended to facilitate communication between deaf and hearing people on the phone. Years ago deaf people accessed the relay using a TTY but nowadays relay companies have created IP Relay websites and even AIM buddies for the public to use on the internet. The system is exploited by teenagers and other immature people to anonymously prank call their friends, enemies, etc. Basically anyone who has your phone number COULD call you using the relay system.

It is also exploited by scammers mostly in W. Africa to contact small businesses and people who are selling things thru want-ads, Craigslist, etc. The scammers try to pass fake checks, money orders, or Western Union payments and get "overpayments." Businesses are supposed to take relay calls because it would be discrimination to not do so, however, they do not have to comply with scammers' requests! They'll ask for your email address and then try to engage you in the scam. I would say DO NOT comply with scammers' emailed requests! As a heads up relay operators work under strict confidentiality. They HONESTLY have no information about the content of the call or who is calling. Please do not get hostile towards the relay oprerator. If you do not want the relay call, simply hang up and continue hanging up when you receive them!

This service is said to be for deaf or impared people, but it is designed for scammers. It just happens that since anyone has access to it, your friends can play jokes on you also, but since you dont know whos on the line I would not trust it one bit. Dont try to juggle whether its a friend or a scam, you could get burned!

I recently put an ad in the paper advertising my puppies for sale.A lady said she was IP relay operator 7465 with a message "Hello my name is Jeff Farmer I'm calling for your puppy for sale, please I want you to email me full details and find a price for verifying. email to moonpool90@yahoo.com.I emailed him photos of pups etc. He responded quickly wanting to do buisiness. The first few sentences sounded very professional, then it sounded like a foreigner. Spelling and words were mixed up. He said he was deaf and wanted to get the puppy for his daughter. He was in North Carolina and would send a money order worth more than price of pup. He would send someone to pick it up, and i would give the remaining money to them for their service. Since I put the ad in , I also recieved one from kathy ako? email was hard to understand, but something like, kasfyako@yahoo.com Also recieved one from Peter Lewis peterlewis52@yahoo.com These are scams! I emailed IP relay services, to ask them what these calls were about. They emailed me back and said it was a service for deaf and impared people. She says what they type, and when they're done she says go ahead, for me to respond. After my response is done I say go ahead and she types it to the person. She said calls are not taped or monitored. It is so easy for someone to get your info, or pretend to be someonelse.THis service makes it easy access to hackers. Hackers may be the ones running it all! So many hackers and identity theft. Purchased with fake id, credit cards, or money orders. Beware. Hang Up. And report to police.

i used to work for IP relay so it's not big deal. most of the time someone will prank call you with it. the gist is that you are talking through an operator, the operator reads what the person types and types back to them what you say (you end your sentences with GO AHEAD). this service is INTENDED for deaf people but since everyone has access to the website/AIM service, anyone can use it (i use it when i make calls to my phone company or credit card company). the only thing people need to be aware of is people who try to scam you using it. if they're trying to buy something you listed publically, don't do it. they'll get your money and your item, on top of it money from your bank as well and will leave you jeopordized.

It was someone asking me questions and then I could hearing someone typing. Had place an on line ad for some furniture. They wanted to know if the cabinet wss still for sale?

I said yes and then I could hear typing. I asked who it was.

Then more typing sounds.

Then they said don't take the check to that bank. After that I said this is a prank so please don't call again and I hung up.

I do not fall for scam artitsts.

Okay, so tonight at around 11 I got this call from this operator saying that she had a message for me from someone typing. I was really confused so she explained it to me. The message that she gave me was asking if my friend and I would have an all girl threesome with them. I then asked who they were and they said Sara and that she went to my college. She new which college I went to, my name, and my friend's name. This is so odd and really really scary....

Hello, I live in California. We, my girlfriend & I posted an add in the local paper to sell our puppies. We recieved a weird phone call from a deaf man, who wanted a male. He said he would send us a money order by mail. My girlfriend gave him all info needed to mail money order. We never recieved any money order and he keeps making up excuses about why payment hasn't been recieved. We aren't dumb enough to mail him anything w/o some money. His number was 216-416-0033, his name and e-mail address is Jeff Farmer (moonpool90@yahoo.com).

I recieved a message on my cell phone v-mail: "This is IP-RELAY Operator #5372..." and then proceded to relay a racist message that had been targeted (i guess...) to me. He then left a phone number that was identical to mine; except the last number was wrong. In the background, it sounded like a lot of people were talking--very much like a telemarketer's area.

I'm not really worried about the message, it's just annoying when I have more important things to do.

I was called on 05/04/07 twice. The second time they left me a message and it was a girl saying "message ROL89, Someone is cheating." I am very angry about this, because being that I'm pregnant and this sent me into tears, I was sick to my stomach, and shaking. I even called my boyfriend asking him if he knew what this was about. It wasn't funny, I could've had a miscarriage, which I have had in my past. I intend on contacting the police and I won't stop until I find out who this is. It's not a funny joke.

This is an internet relay number for the deaf (( http://www.ip-relay.com/ )), but used by SCAMMERS in various scams such as: Nigerian, Part-time job offer, you won the coca-cola lottery, etc. Here are other #'s they use:
207-593-3013
207-593-3014
207-593-3015
207-593-3016
216-416-0032
216-416-0033
408-822-1645
612-524-0455
612-547-0006

With this internet relay systems, the originator of the call could be calling from ANYWHERE in the world.

I received a call from the same message relay service. I did some diggin'and MCImetro, ats provides many services. For those of you who received prank calls it was from someone who had gone to their relay web page for the deaf and would type the message to the operator who HAS to say anything they type. For those of you who got responses from ads, or work for a B2B company or marketing firm or something... MCI also provides companies with databases and calling lists to purchasers of this service (whatever the purchasers intentions). My phone call was a friend pranking me, but I don't know who. At first when I asked who it was they said it was Kyle but I don't know a Kyle that had the info. that this pranker had in order to hold the conversation between us. Then they said it was a close friend of mine (used first and last name) which narrowed the possibilities down a lot, but I still don't know who it was b/c after I hung up I called this close friend of mine immediately and said that he didn't call and when I told him about the conversation he was just as wierded out as I was. Does anyone know how to find out who my pranker is?

I had placed an ad in the Fresno paper for poodle puppies and recevied a call from a relay operator but it came thru on my cell as a restricted number. She proceeded to tell me this person wanted me to email him at kentcord@yahoo.com. I did and he emailed back stating he used to work for the UN and recently lost his hearing while evacuating civilians in Iraq. He said that he wanted one of my puppies but that a consigment co. in London would have a rep pick up the puppy and fly him to New York where he was. This seemed very strange to me so I asked why he wasn’t looking in his region of the country for a dog, but he never responded to that question, so I emailed him back saying I didn’t want to sell my puppy this way. Then 5 days later I get another call from a relay operator but this time it showed the 216-416-0033 number. I told the operator, if this about the puppies for sale, they have all been sold, she then said the caller hung up. Very, very bizarre - not sure if the 2 calls are related. Check out the following site http://www.bozzysworld.com/2005/04/19/216-416-0033 for other people receiving the same calls.
