This is a legitimate number that Google uses for verification codes on G-mail.
Just received voicemail stating a code from 202-455-8888. After reading all these posts, I will not be calling back. My only question is: If this number has been used for the last 4 years or so for scam/phishing attempts, Why isn't the FTC or anyone shutting it down??
Who is this?

202-455-8888 seems to be a legitimate number that Google Voice uses for verification (and in my limited experience is initiated by my on-line action), but scammers could be faking the caller id. How can you tell which is which? For one thing, I wouldn't expect Google Voice to ask for a credit card number.
GOOGLE VOICE SCAME TO STEAL YOUR NUMBER AND SCAM OTHER PEOPLE USING YOUR NUMBER SO YOU GET ARRESTED INSTEAD OF THEM. CLEVER?
Received call from 402-281-3514,told me to put a code in when they called which was
Washington DC. Had listed something on Craigslist. They called 4 times
Wanted me to enter the 2 digit code, I did not do that. Called 3 more times, just declined
the call. Trouble written all over these numbers!!!! Scam!
This # is on my phone over a dozen times. I donor answer and I blocked it now. I did not have a voice mail set up with google or anyone else. This has to be a scammer. I call this stuff harrassement. Ever try to call them back ? You can't.

One of several Google Accounts Verification phone numbers. Ignore if you did not activate a new product, or if you did not make changes to your google account.
Received an automated call from Google to validate changes I made to my Google Voice account. Google has offices in many locations besides California, including Austin and New York, so why not DC? For those who receive calls but don't have or haven't made changes to a Google account, odds are someone else has made a typo when entering the phone number for verification.
EVERYONE KNOWS GOOGLE IS in Mt View, California. I seriously doubt that THEY are going to call to confirm THIER SECURITY PROGRAM! C'Mon think about it!
Called my house twice at 6:44 AM on 4.9.15. Isn't that illegal?
They said thank you for using our verification system. Your ID number is .... (I didn't write it down)

This number is used by Google for account verification purposes.
I received a call from this number by voicemail and a woman's voice gave me a riddle of the number, and I quote "6, 3, 1, 5, 8, 2"

Calls from this number are made by Google.
When you sign up for some of their products they ask for you phone number and then either call or text you from 202 455-8888 with a verification request.
(I'm sure Google Voice and Google 2-Step authentication use this)
No legitimate caller would have called us at 12:34AM (yes, after midnight when Saturday night turns into Sunday). Awakened from a sound sleep, we didn't answer, as our telephone told us it was[another unknown caller. Within the next 10-minutes we heard single rings 2 or 3 times -- enough to re-awaken us from having fallen back to sleep. I checked the phone for a message. The robo message talked over our voice message. I heard a recorded young female adult voice saying, "Please enter the 2-digit validation code you were given on-line." I haven't the faintest idea what this refers to, and know that it's nothing important to me.
Sick of calls saying unavailable since on the do not call list!

, the third gave me a "verification code" then about 30 seconds later I get a call from 202 455 8888 with a recording asking me to enter my "verification code". I am not sure what kind of scam this is but I hung up, & blocked both numbers on my phone. People beware there lots of low lifes out there working to steal what the US Government has not already stole from you.
Google Authentication provides 6-digit code
Got the call on my cell phone, which I hate more then my house phone, because of limited minutes. ignored call, voice-mail message was just a computer voice repeating the numbers 917817.
This is Google voice. I needed a code for two factor authentication on my Gmail. I had them call with the code and this is the phone number. If you received a call asking you to enter a two digit code, they expect you are on your computer setting up Google Voice with your phone. If you did not do it, someone else is doing it.
I added my cell phone number to my Google Voice account. I received a call from 202-455-8888 to authenticated that it was my phone number that I was adding.
Recieved a call from this number telling me to put in code 70 I had won a prize, after I had intered the code now i wonder if that is something that is real. i tried to call the number 202-455-8888 and was told it was not available

This is the verification number for Google Voice
When you request Google Voice to forward calls from your Google Voice number to another number, they will give you a 2 digit number
Then, they call this number to verify it is the correct number. You enter the 2 digit code and the number is then linked to your Google Voice number.
I got a call on my cell at 11:02 pm EST. Did not answer, but caller left recorded message to key in two numbers to verify my identity.
I got three calls in a row at 12:01 PM PST, and it was a recording asking me to key in 2 numbers to verify my identity.
I called the number back seven times and each time the same recording said "we are unable to finish your call".
