They were calling my work I called it back, and talked to the rep. When he answered he asked me my name. I never give any information out over the phone so I told him I was the manager. He then told me he was looking for a Linda K. I told him there was no Linda, he said thanks "Sarah" and hung up. Hm......did I slip up and give him my name, or has he been cold calling my employees, and getting information. Tellamarketers, and scam artists do it all the time. Call a business, ask if they can talk to the manager, when they can't get the managers name. Call back later with a first name, and get the last, call again later with the managers name, and ask to confirm information on your business license. I don't think these guys are scamers, but they still piss me off. Quit Calling my business.

Ms. Jolley, now that you've practiced your no-call request here, deliver it to the actual caller, which does not maintain this site or this web page. Your caller is not going to dutifully study random forum complaints and cannot magically determine which numbers should not be called based on anonymous comments.

Both GE Money and Discover are sue-happy lenders. Be certain you are not dealing with a third party collector in disguise. See if otherwise you have state collection laws which apply to original creditors and will help you defeat the noise and abuse.

Here are the federal laws for third party collection agencies:

As ''W'' suggested, being unlisted does not hide your phone from a sequential dialer. No one with that gadget needs to ''have'' your number. It merely tries every number in creation by rapid brute force. Possibly numbers are flagged for retry according to the response.

I have an unlisted cell phone number, how the hell did they even get it? Ugh, I thought I'd be safe from scams and telemarketers with a cell phone. guess I was wrong. Btw, they were telling me I "won" two tickets to the Bahamas if i pressed 1 on my cell.

Called my unlisted and screened work phone with their stupid message, so they must be using an illegal random dialer. Put it on speaker and wasted their phone-line time until their machine gave up. Pure rip-off. Anyhow, I have been to the Bahamas - and you would have to pay me a great deal to go back (also a pure rip-off). Can we hunt them down and put them into a public pillory?

Received incoming call from 866-314-9507 on 9 August 2011. English-speaking man came on the line and asked to speak with a "Tammy S. Alaliey". I asked him to spell the person's name. Then I asked him where he got my telephone number from (I have had my phone number for over 9 years). He answered, "I can't give you that information." To which I then asked him why his company "robocalls" telephone numbers looking for particular persons since I have had this phone number for over 9 years and I didn't know who "Tammy S. Alaliey" was, my number is on the American "Do Not Call List" and I demanded his company STOP CALLING MY NUMBER !!! The man replied that he would "take my number out of their system" and claimed the calls would stop. Man REFUSED to identify his company and told him his refusal was a violation of US federal law. As for "Tammy S. Alaliey," I hope you get arrested and incarcerated for using other people's telephone numbers to avoid paying your bills, B***H !!!!!

The dirty secret is that charity calls are often placed by a commercial fundraiser, such as Associated Community Services, Dial America, Harris, InfoCision, MDS, and TeleFund. These non-sales calls are exempt from federal DNC, even though such call centers are very much for-profit and pocket most of what these periodic campaigns collect. At times the ''charity'' client is itself a closet profit enterprise, compounding the deception.

However, as commercial entities, these hired call centers are expected to honor an internal no-call list and add any number upon request. Break that order, the FTC declares, and ''the telemarketer may be subject to a fine of up to $16,000.'' They are also covered to a point by other regulations for telepests, so you can kvetch about abandoned calls, bot calls to mobile phones, and so on.

What else to do? File complaints with the FTC and attorneys general, and the charity group doing the hiring. When the boiler room calls, try getting on a master ''no-call'' list for all of that firm's charity clients. (See more discussion under this number: 9018819984 ) If a given commercial fundraiser seems deaf to your demands, and/or merely renews its pestering with the next campaign, turn up your volume on paper. Send a cease-comm notice via USPS Certified with return card. It need not say more than to stop calling and writing whatever numbers and addresses you want protected.

A charity call campaign must usually be cleared through some agency or regulator in your state, and many states make activity reports available online. They often reveal a specified period of weeks or months in which the group is permitted to solicit, sometimes tracking well with the observations on these call forums. Find those reports and you'll find one more desk to advise of your displeasure.

“The large gap between Cancer Fund of America’s cash donations and the portion ultimately benefiting cancer patients should be a concern for every potential donor,” said Michelle Corey, president and CEO of the St. Louis BBB. “Even when compared to other nonprofits that rely heavily on professional fundraisers, the charity’s record is unsatisfactory and donors should know that only a fraction of their donation will provide any direct benefit to cancer patients or their families.”

Claims to be "Cancer Support Service". This is apparently a scam. They readily (well, with only a little prodding) gave their address as 20755 Michigan Avenue, Dearborn, MI 48034. And then they volunteered their "web address" as www.css.org and continued asking for money. Unfortunately for their story, this is the URI of Colorado Springs School in Colorado Springs, Colorado, who are probably unaware that scammers are giving out their URI in an attempt to convince people that they are authentic charities. Presumably some people would then just assume that they are legitimate without bothering to check the URI to see who is really there. The real Cancer Support Services, Inc. is at www.cancersupportservices.net and their address is CSS, 23400 Michigan Ave., Suite P12, Dearborn, MI 48124. And that is pretty much a scam as well: See www.charitywatch.org and www.charitywatch.org The parent "organization" of Cancer Support Services, Inc. gives only 17% of the money they collect to charity. The rest goes to enrich the family that runs the organization. It is far more efficient to donate your money to some other organization--any other organization.

Click on the Articles tab in the menu bar at top, and you'll find the mentioned article at the top of the list: Fundraisers Ordered to Pay $18.8 mm and Banned from Soliciting Forever.

September 3rd, 2010 Cass

I got a call from "Toll Free Call" on 8/6; no message. Some GOOD NEWS! Thanks to all who provided whatever clues -- all these loose associations with a variety of non-profits. Read full article here: -- what a story of graft. From the August 2010 Charity Rating Guide & Watchdog Report:

"Donors who have been misled or harassed by charity telemarketers know how insidious some telephone fundraisers can be. In a signal that the regulators know it, too, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has ordered the operators of the telemarketing company Civic Development Group (CDG) to pay $18.8 million, the largest penalty ever handed down in a consumer protection case."

"CDG fundraised for numerous local firefighter, police and veterans charities. They also had contracts with several groups that received F ratings from AIP, including Cancer Fund of America, Children's Charity Fund/A Child's Wish Foundation, Disabled Veterans Association, Firefighters Charitable Foundation/Fire Victims, and the Childhood Leukemia Foundation. The Virginia Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the AIP F rated charity, Paralyzed Veterans Association, was also a client of CDG."

I highly recommend reading the Charity Watch articles regarding any cancer, veteran etc. group you are considering for donations. Some real eye openers on other national organizations in addition.

Per my caller ID, they phone my home at least once per day. Saturday morning they called, no one responded to my "hello's" so I hung up, looked up the number, and found it's an organization I've never heard of before; Cancer Support Services. Per their website they offer services to cancer patients, and give supplies to hospices, and other non-profit organizations. This must be a scam! Hospices are federally certified to be reimbursed for Medicare and Medicaid patients, and that includes personal supplies such as adult diapers, lotions, etc. I know of no hospice which accepts supplies in that manner. Apparently they are going by a new name ... Cancer Research (something something). When I called the number back you have to listen to an advertisement about how wonderful they are and ask (if I understood correctly) YOU to SPONSOR the care of a cancer patient somehow. They say they are listed as a charity with the Attorney Generals office (hmmmm) and "gifts" are tax deductible. At the end of the long advertisement you can leave your name and tell them to remove you from their call list. I am on the do not call list, however, "charitable organziations" are exempt from the do not call list.

I paid my J.C.Penny off but they say the final payment was late and I owe them like $39.
I pay electronically and the payment was sent on the same day every month and was never late until it was the final payment. I told them to take a flying leap and sent them a letter IF it shows up on my credit report I will sue them. I can prove for 33 months the payment was sent on the same date and was never late and it was sent 12 days prior to the due date so I know it was there on time. They keep calling me and my attorney has me documenting every call because they are harrassing me and we will be in a Jury trial. I will never do business with Penny's again.

This is the first call we've gotten from this number (January 18, 2010 at 7:33 PM).

The phone rang two times, then disconnected. There was no time to answer, and my voice message machine did not have time to answer.

The information posted on this web site indicates that it is a fundraising scam.

I agree with the previous poster that you should not even say the work 'yes' in any context, if you speak with them.

Do not engage them in any conversation. Do not try to explain your reasons for not giving. The best response is "No, thank you," and then hang up.

If you want to donate money to help fight cancers, go do your own research and decide for yourself which organizations are doing the best work.

January 15th, 2010 PeggyC926

These scumbags call at least 4 or 5 times a week..... I've tried answering the call and get nothing. If I don't answer, they don't leave a message and will call back in an hour or two. My only mental therapy on this is to scream in the phone STOP CALLING HERE and hang up.

First of all-- No One can call you Before 9am or after 9pm your time-- Charity, Political or whatever. Report them. Second this number is for the Cancer Fund. The Cancer Fund is a fraudulent charity, Not to be confused with legitimate Cancer Organizations. MSN states: " You wouldn't want to confuse the Cancer Fund of America, which recently settled a fraud lawsuit with the state of Vermont, and the Cancer Research Institute, which gets high marks from charity monitors. {from: moneycentral.msn.com There are places to send compaints on this link.}

This # kept calling me, wanting me to donate money. I told them I was on disability and couldn't afford it and the kept calling me and so I asked them to take me off their list. I finally agreed to send them 20 dollars to get them to leave me alone. They sent the packet. I threw it in the trash and thought that would be the end of it. I have had pneumonia and have been sick, They still keep calling me. I asked them to quit calling me. They were nasty to me and all sounded like colored folk. They said you promised us 20 dollars, aren't you going to send it. A woman called me 3 times this week and today a man called me and gave me this address to send the 20 dollars too as I said I had lost the papers. CFA Support, 23400 Michigan Ave. P12, Michigan 48124. These people are nasty talking to you demanding money to begin with, and then hounds you to death. I don't know what to do about it. There was a piece in the paper to not give in to these calls. After reading these comments, guess I will just look at the caller ID, and not answer the phone to them again.

If you take a few minutes to search on the Net about this topic, you can quickly realize that the Credit Card scam related to gifts and/or low interest rate offers has been going on since at least, 2003. I've read enough on this subject to come to the conclusion that these call centers (wherever they are located in the world) operate without any fear of being caught. They cause hundred of thousand dollars losses daily to the credit card companies and guess what? The credit card companies pass their losses to the users who are…you and me. As of today, these pirate call centers are still operating in full force across North America. They have found the loophole for escaping from FBI and RCMP. The typical “model citizen” usually reports the fraud to the attorney or local police. I have news for you. You can file as many complains as you want to the authorities, they just can’t catch them! You can threaten of reporting their annoying calls to the phone companies, you can swear, being rude, vulgar with them – They are the ones controlling the game. They just hang up (laughing) until they receive a call from the next gullible person (and the wheel keeps turning). Whatever you do or say, you won’t be taken off their automated calling list. The heads of these scam acts like a computer virus. They are very much up to date with the changing law enforcement techniques and like a moving target, they disappear in the field. You can find numerous blogs and discussion forums related to this scam (this one is one of them). For every thread on the Net that exposes their illegal activities, they have members posting a message denying complains of people who got ripped off. They introduce contradicting information in blogs in order to confuse people who are unsure about the legitimacy of their offers. They have fake web sites, fake names, fake addresses, etc. Based on these facts, I think the only thing that can be done is to interfere with their practices. How can this be done? By “putting a stick in their wheel", hitting the weakest spot – their need to grab personal information from you. I’ve been practicing for quite a few times now and you’d be impressed by how patient they become when they feel that they have you as a fish on their hook. Again, the only power you have over them is to spend as much time as you can to waste THEIR time. This time you spend with them is time that they can’t use for screwing other people. I've learned a lot from reading in threads on the Net. Here is what I started doing: the principle is to play the game of being interested by their offer, providing fake information, pretending, acting, and creating delays. I hear you say that you don’t know how to reach them because whenever they call you because your call I.D. shows: 123-456-7890 (or any other spoofed phone i.d.). Didn’t I tell you they were smart? Here are a few numbers that still work as of today: 1 800-501-0100 (to reach the vacation trip scam) | 1 888-786-6201 or 1 800 943-3250 or 1 800-961-9830 (to reach the MCS credit card interest rate scam). If you need more numbers you can with a little effort “google” the name of the organization along with in the search field and it should pull more numbers to call to. Finally, here is my recipe for a great "obstruction" session upon these scammers: 1) take a hands free phone (portable is even better as you can still conduct you home activities) 2) get them to go through their entire sales pitch by encouraging and acknowledging every once in a while 3) make it last as long as your time permits (they are the one assuming the charges of the “1-800” communication). 4) When you feel that they suspect your “game” (or when you’re bored whichever comes first), find a nice and polite way to tell them that they've just wasted 15-20 minutes (sometimes more) of their precious time stealing other gullible people. I guarantee you that you will get some reaction at the other end of the line. Give them a ride and flood their phone lines! Make their life as miserable as they do to us. HEARING THEIR FRUSTRATION IS A GREAT REWARD AND PURE PLEASURE. Don’t be intimidated if they threaten you of anything, they are totally harmless.
