yes, and we all know how diligent everyone is who signs onto a no-call list, carefully reading about its terms and limitations so that no one ever complains for the wrong reason .....

Q&A: The National Do Not Call Registry
ftc.gov

We also know of the consistent due diligence shown by users of database sites like this, where the correction for their faulty assumptions could be found -- oh, let's say six little posts and two years prior to their arrival.

Called my wife's cell while she was on another call; she ignored them. All of our numbers are on the DNC, but we all know how diligent the govt. is with their enforcement of this issue.

Yeah, I don't have time to ''call them a dozen times'' and I wouldn't stoop to the agency's level besides.

To a ''not me'' case I always recommend putting the agency on notice, just as you would if you were the target and the debt claim was invalid. Send a ''cease-communication'' notice via USPS Certified with return card. This is the method promoted by the FTC and many consumer watchdogs, and the only way to set a legal landmine, as such a notice is ignored at their risk of a lawsuit from you. You may already be due some payback if you can prove you've endured abusive or misleading treatment in an effort to collect debt.

Also, an alleged debtor returning to the OC is unlikely to go far. When debt is assigned, the creditor has usually agreed contractually with the collection agency not to get involved. When debt is sold outright, the OC is entirely out of the picture and doesn't want your money. For such cases it's best to dispute the claim on paper, again using USPS CMRR. The FTC material will get you started on that topic as well.

Learn how to exercise your FDCPA rights as an alleged debtor at FTC-dot-gov. See also if your state laws are stronger.

their toll-free number is 866-438-2860.

if you are not the person they claim to be calling, call them a dozen times for every time they call you.

do not tell them anything. just demand to talk to the person who called you. do not give your name, as they do not use real names when making calls.

if you get a recording telling you to leave a message, just put your phone by the television speaker, and let it run for as long as it will allow.

(if you really owe the debt, contact the ORIGINAL creditor if you want to be honest and pay your just debt. Do NOT deal with these 3rd party collectors.)

Caller phishing for information.

It is a collection agency in MN called SRS or FRS the callers name sounded like Elissa (voice was not too clear)

2010-10-21 17:42:31 UTCResident47

Uh-huh, and cutesy pranks like that may also drive a collector to send your account to litigation. Real revenge would involve recording evidence of abusive tactics, of which this collector appears capable, and winning a judgment as the law allows each citizen to pursue.

If you are receiving misdirected or abusive calls from a third party debt collector, you may find relief in the provisions of the FDCPA, which regulates collector behavior. Learn your rights at FTC-dot-gov.

To counter Chris, the DNC registry is for telemarketers, meaning sales. Charities, debt collectors, political speech, and surveyors are all exempt.

I'm telling you, the best way to get rid of these cockraches is to politely answer the phone, then ask them to hold on for "just a second",,,,then put your phone down in front of your speaker (radio, CD, etc) Let THEM sit and listen to the radio for a couple of mimutes. Remember, it costs them to call long distance. I promise, it works EVERYTIME with me.

Tired of these people calling.

2010-01-23 17:11:23 UTCChris

A woman's voice asked if I knew and gave an address which is apparently one of my neighbors.
She asked if I knew these people and said she was trying to reach them. I asked if it was an
emergency and she did not answer the question-- only set off explaining that she "had a file on
her desk" and is trying to get in touch with these people. I complained that this was the
second time that someone has called me about my neighbors and told her to call the sheriff
if she needs to get in touch with these people. I will be reporting this organization to the
attorney general in MN as this is a blatant violation of the DO NOT CALL registry.

The use geo-location software to identify nearby addresses of the
people they are trying to collect from and then reverse directories to get
phone numbers for those addresses and then disturb people who have no
relationship to or knowledge of the parties they are apparently trying to
collect from.

2009-12-16 19:15:03 UTCGranny

they call at least 8 times a day harrassing me. I have talked to them in first time they called, they claim to be a collection agency and they proceed to ask personal information well I told them I do not and will not give out any personal information on the phone if they wish to prove this debt is owed they would need to contact me by US Postal service with All the information and I will deal with them. they then ask for my address ... well DUH if they are collecting a debt wouldnt you think they would have my address they sure as heck have my WORK number. keep in mind they started the harrassment over 6 months ago and as of today I have not gotten any information in the mail and they freaking continue to call.

A Mr Volk called my brother, looking for me. When I tried to call back no one answers.

2008-10-31 19:50:29 UTCBob

I have been continously harassed by this company. I work for a federal agency. I got all his information he wished to give, recorded it and of course, he played right into it and I turned all the information over to the FBI Office in Baltimore Maryland. I hope he keeps it up and that you guys keep checking your blog here on this number cause I see a awesome lawsuit coming. GET READY TO CASH IN FOLKS! The other numbers he likes to use are listed below in addition to the number 410-922-6600.

I just got a call from this number. They were asking for someone who I do not know. I told them that I have only had this number for about 3 months since I just bought my house in May, so hopefully they will stop calling. It showed up as Financial Recovery on my caller ID.

2008-04-22 23:41:31 UTCMary

I received a call today from Randy Deen(?) asking for my ex-husband whom I have been divorced from for 10 years. He kept demanding to know why "I was covering for him"? I haven't talked to the man in over 8 years. How they obtained my cell phone number, I haven't a clue. From the post's on this board it would seem there is grounds for some kind of class action situation.

2007-12-29 15:16:54 UTCJay

These guys call my cell and leave recorded messages for someone else, when I finally get through to a person and informed them they have the wrong number, they then started calling my cell phone again, this time looking for a different person. Seems very shady.

2007-12-06 19:04:26 UTCdan

2007-04-13 01:23:22 UTCTai

Found a missed call on my cell at 20:10. No message was left. I don't recognize this number. So before calling it back I looked it up on the Internet and came across this site. It seems to be a spammer.

2006-11-29 16:24:24 UTCAmanda

They called my cell phone number which i have had less than a month. I thought that was illegal. I have no idea why they are calling me. It was just a recording asking me to hold for an important call.

2006-11-28 18:18:50 UTCJ

Have called up to 8 times/day between cell phone and work. They have been told by my manager and myself that I will not accept personal calls while at work, but continue to call, leaving messages from all sorts of Mr. or Mrs. Someone... Very rude.

2006-11-14 10:42:16 UTCMat

Constantly calling in reference to a collection. I've asked them to stop. They have also called me at work 5-6 times a day. I asked them to please not call my work. They continue to call and are very rude. I will not work with them and I refuse to answer the calls.

2006-11-08 18:47:09 UTCMelissa

Constantly calling in reference to a collection. I've asked them to stop and also told them I was disputing the charge with the orignal creditor. They continue to call and are very rude. I will not work with them and I refuse to answer the calls.

2006-09-26 12:45:50 UTCJodi

Asked caller for and address to send a certified cease and desist. Merrick refused, and told me he would call as many times a day as he wanted, and there was nothing that I could do about it.

2006-09-17 00:38:58 UTCDAVE

Calls 4 times a day according to caller ID

2006-09-02 04:29:03 UTClaura

VOICE MAIL HAD MESSAGE TO "PLEASE CALL MERICK ANDERSON AT 8772583403" DO NOT KNOW WHO THIS IS

How do I stop them from calling?

  1. Ask the unwanted caller to stop calling and put you on their do not call list (they are legally required to comply).
  2. If your number is registered with the National Do Not Call Registry you can file a complaint with the FTC.
  3. Block them with a call blocker:
