How do I stop them from calling?
- Ask the unwanted caller to stop calling and put you on their do not call list (they are legally required to comply).
- If your number is registered with the National Do Not Call Registry you can file a complaint with the
FTC. - Block them with a call blocker:
Uniden DECT1288 blocks up to 20 numbers, plus Private and Unknown, with the reject tone, without ringing the phone.
Panasonic KX-TG106 blocks up to 30 numbers, plus all unidentified callers, with a busy tone, after the phone rings once.
JF Teck Caller ID with Ring Controller blocks up to 70 numbers, and can be set to always allow up to 100 to ring through.

I had one from them from Tuesday of last week. They seemed suspicous so I googled their number and apparerntly they are a debt collector, but one that uses unscrupulous tactics. I would say check with who owns the original debt and work with them, if they are willing; these Mercantile people sound like a scam! Who knows they may not even represent your real debtor.
called the (866) 716-1544 number and they said they were part of a law firm ( liars) then told them they called a private unlisted phone number and also told them it was against the law for any collection agent to try and verify a debt of any kind over the phone with written information..lady said she removed our number but i highly doubt it...will see if they try to call back...lol

To Melissa: Do you have this documented? If you can even take pictures of your caller ID that shows the time and number of calls, you can file harassment charges. That is ridiculous for them to act that way. The other thing I recommend is to send them a cease and desist letter telling them that you are not the party they are seeking and to stop all further communication with you. Send it certified mail and when you get the signed receipt back, if they call you again you should contact a lawyer. According to the FDCPA, once they are notified that you are not the person they seek, they are required to stop calling you. Don't put up with their crap. Get litigious on their collective a**es.
This company was told a month ago, they had the wrong number, I was not who they were looking for. I asked then to quit calling my number. They did not, to this day, I am still recieving an early morning phone call from this company. This morning, when the calls started I called them back and yelled at them to stop. THEY THEN RETURNED THE CALL 10 more times back to back. They would call and laugh and then hang up.
they never leave a message - have had calls from them in the past.
Update: This number is fake, a recorded message tells you to go call 1-866-839-7277 which is the number for debt collector "Mercantile Adjustment Bureau". Here's what I found about them:
