ABTM WROTE, "This is absolutely legit. Paypal and Ebay both use a service from a company called Authentify (go look at their website). When you have a valuable transaction with one of them, or if you try to change your account information, they have Authentify call your registered phone number before they allow the transaction or account change to happen just to make sure it was really you making the change or doing the deal. Notice the wierd times you got calls? Most of the time when online fraud takes place, it comes through non business hours, and many times from other countries (different time zones). When you get the call, if you didn't do anything on your paypal or ebay account, you can hang up and contact paypal/ebay directly. Chances are, someone was trying to pull a fast one with your account!! Authentify is a completely legitimate security company. If they call you and you're not expecting it, you should be concerned!"
eBay contracts with this "THIRD PARTY" to SNOOP DEEPER INTO YOUR AFFAIRS & DATABASE AND SELL YOUR INFO. Further, they cannot and will not be held responsible for what that THIRD PARTY does with your info. People should REFUSE to provide all their private info to companies like eBay, PayPal and Google. It is totally UNNECESSARY to keep providing more & more info, every time you log in to eBay or PP and want to do something on your account. THIS IS JUST EBAY & PP DOING "PHISHING."
PAYPAL is even more obnoxious, because they will FREEZE your account and LOCK UP your funds if you don't provide them the info they demand. (HOW/WHY is this even legal?)
JUST SAY NO.
I called the number and a message says the call cannot be completed as dialed. So it's a bad number or they have incoming calls blocked.
Found this name and number on my caller id from 6:18 a.m. this morning, I didn't hear the phone ring. No message on the answering machine. Reverse look up said it was an unlisted number in Bensenville, IL. 630-948-1490 is what I have. We had a problem with Ebay and was on the phone with them on Thursday, so who knows. Pretty shady if you ask me. They could at least leave a message...
"hello this is ebay calling. If you are expecting this call press 4"...repeats message.
Since i wasn't expect them to call me i didnt press anything, after about 2 minutes they hung up.
*69 1-847-709-0211 Quick Busy Signal. Sounds like no incoming calls.
I do a lot of selling & buying on rotten ebay, but i know this was a scam.
having read this it makes sense to me. My user account on Ebay is one that lots of other people would like to have. I guess I have to put up with occasional attempts to take it over.
None have succeeded; none will.
Caller said they were calling for my daughters ex-husband. They were divorced 15 years ago. She has since remarried and has children. I tried to call them back to tell them not to call my mother again. I am not even sure how they got her number since she has only had it 2 years. She asked them how they got the number and they said, "someone gave it to them." What is this and why doesn't their number work to call them back? Is anything being done about this?? And we don't even have a Pay Pal or e-bay account....DOESN'T SOUND LEGIT TO ME. If this was legit why doesn't their number work to call them back???
I received a call from this number at 1:30 am. If this is legit, why would they make a call at this hour of the day and have a voice recording tell me to press #3? They also called a second time within minutes. the second itme I figured they would keep calling all night so I pressed #3. It repeated a four digit code and said it was my password which it wasnt. I also redialed this number after retreiving it from my called ID. I got a lady on the other end who tild me that I woke her grand daughter and now she woudl have to put her back to sleep and hung up on me. I have checked all my accounts and everything appears to be in order. THIS IS SOME SORT OF PHISHING
We just got a call from this company now...at 1am...
It turns out to be totally legit. It's an automated system to verify your Paypal and Ebay account in case of questionable activity. Apparently my father had some activity on his account and Authentify Inc. helped him get the Ebay account unlocked. We checked all the links in the emails and everything (I checked the source code too) and it was all authentic. It's an 847 number. They are the real deal guys, not a scam, and I'm big on bringing down scammers on a federal level.
This morning I received two calls from Authentify Inc (Caller ID). I didn't recognize this name so I let it go to my answering machine. What recorded was a pause then a recorded female voice saying "If you are expecting this call press 1," another pause, then the same message.
Since I was expecting any such a call, I felt this an obvious attempt at a scam. I dialed the phone company Call Trace number (*57). If there are 3 or more of these traces, telephone company security takes action.
The corporate reply (below) claims that they are legitmate, but if they cannot state, in their message, who they are and why they are calling, then they are obvious frauds.
Thank God for Caller ID.

I personally emailed the Regional Director and this is how he replied:
I regret you were disturbed by the Authentify telephone calls at an unusual hour of the day. Authentify operates a security service on behalf of a number of online banks, Internet e-commerce sites, e-payment sites, gaming sites and other online firms... including e-Bay and PayPal.
The Authentify process requires someone who is attempting a sensitive transaction, perhaps a change to a password, to be able to answer a call to a telephone number that is part of the account profile. Effectively, that means if someone who is not J.Q. Public attempts to change passwords or otherwise use an account owned by J.Q. Public of 500 W. Main St., Chicago, Illinois, PH: 312-555-1234 – they will be required to answer 312-555-1234. Their computer session will time them out if they are unable to answer the phone.
There are a number of possibilities in your particular case:
· Someone made a typing error when they set up their own account and typed in a number that equals yours.
· Someone was registering for a new account that would deliver a PIN to them over the telephone, and typo’d their phone to equal yours.
· Someone could have been attempting to use one of your online accounts but could not because they could not answer your phone.
The fact that you have ‘older’ accounts that you have not accessed for a while would suggest the more sinister third bullet point above. The mischief makers out there have ways to identify ‘dormant’ accounts and they try to hijack them. The account owner does not use the account much and would not notice someone else using it.
The good news, if it was something that involved one of your own accounts, the ‘user’ did not succeed. They could not answer your phone – despite trying several times before they figured it out.
We at Authentify makes several million calls a month to more than 100 countries on behalf of our customers. There are instances in which fraudsters are turned away because they are unable to answer the phone for the rightful owner.
I regret that you were disturbed, but I hope you understand the value of the service.
Respectfully,
John Zurawski

We received two calls from this number last night. We let the machine pick it up. This morning I called the number back and got a company here in Tennessee (847 is Illinois) that is not making this type of call. Obviously, Authentify Inc. is somehow routing their calls through another number in another state. I doubt that any reputable business would do this. We're going to be watching our Pay Pal and E-Bay accounts very carefully and have placed the 847-709-0211 on our "call block" system to avoid further calls, especially late at night. There's a small charge for this service, but it's worth it.
They woke me at 6:14 am!! I'm an old disabled lady and hardly get enough sleep anyway!! They left no meassage. I'm on 'don't call list'. My daughter is traveling now, so I thought there was an emergency and almost had a heart attack!!! After I read the below messages, I see that it could have been from PayPal, where I charged something to my account 10 days ago, but they verify with me before they send out any payments. It can't be Ebay, never had dealings with them. Will check with PP if they really could have done it, this is insane to call outside of business hours!!!
They called my cell phone and I let it go to voice mail. I listened to the message and there was a brief pause then an automated person saying, "If you are expecting this call, push 7.' I wasn't so I didn't. I have no clue who it is but have noticed messages on here about it being from Ebay & PayPal. I do not have an account with Ebay or PayPal nor have I ever. I also haven't changed anything of mine recently so have no clue who needs to be verifying something. I believe it's a scam of some sort. I'm on the Do Not Call list so this doesn't please me at all.
They called my home at 10:30 in the evening. WOW how annoying. At this point they have only called once but I will definitely keep an eye on this and tell others not to verify the call. This must be some type of scam.
This is an automated service which Ebay (probably among others) uses to verify that you are changing or updating something in your personal profile. In my case, I wanted to update an old User ID which I hadn't accessed in a number of months, and they called from this number to give me a temporary password to use in the account, since my original one had been de-activated.
This number called my house--I live in the Midwest--at 7am. When I answered it--it was an automated person saying, "If you are expecting this call, push 5" I did not push anything & it never said anything else. I hung up and it called back again a minute later--same thing--so I stayed on a little longer this time thinking maybe I missed something after the automated voice....but nope...nothing. So I hung up and they called again, this time I let it go to voicemail and they didnt leave a message. VERY WEIRD!
This call came in at 5:58 a.m. Saying they were calling for ebay. Ridiculous.
Called repeatedly.."if you're expecting this call please press 87"
Called at 3AM...YES 3AM....said it was from eBay and I hung up!
last two night recieved phone call from this number and8477502415. the phone calls were after midnight. I didnt answer... it seems from all the comments below i should bother answering.
this call came in at 3:19 am . when I answered the automated message stated they were confirming a paypal transaction, when I heard this I hung up. This call came in two mornings in a row. The first one was the morning before was at 2:40 am! I have no knowledge of a paypal transaction. I have removed all of my information from my pay pal account.
I got the call at 11PM, woke me up. It said it was from eBay and to press "2" if I was expecting their call. If this truly is legit, eBay needs a better method. I was not expecting a call, so I hung up.
This number called us at 5:06 am to tell us about a CREDIT CARD offer!!! They said it was eBay.
Called at 9 in the evening completely unsolicited. This is against Federal Law which probhibits unsolicited calls past 8:30. I saw the Caller ID, didn't recognize it so I didn't answer at first. The phone was ringing for 30 minutes straight until I finally answered it and heard "This is PayPal calling. If you are expecting this call, press 7." We do not use eBay and are extremely paranoid about identity theft, so we refuse to do business with anyone that requires more than a name, address, and telephone number. Even then, we usually use aliases, not real names so we'll know what company is selling off what little information we allow companies to have. Therefore I have no idea why or even how anyone would be able to use our number for a fake account. I'm really rather annoyed.
I just got off the phone with eBay (I called the 800 # on their website), and they told me that yes, they employ an automated system to randomly call their customers and verify identity. She verified that the call says something about "if you were expecting this call, press whatever number)
From what I can gather, they employ an outside company to make the automated calls, which would explain why some people are getting calls from this same phone number that claim to be another company.
I didn't so much mind the call---what I minded was that I received it at 1:00 am. The not-so-bright cs rep who took my call says she will let her supervisor know that the company they hired is actually calling people in the middle of the night, but I doubt anything will change.
I had to reset my PIN# for my online banking through Paypal and this automated call came to verify my phone number matched their records so I could reset my PIN online. It is legit.
See authentify.com for explanation of this call from it's originating company, Authentify.
I received a recorded message asking if I was expecting a call from ebay. I called ebay, they were not interested.
I forgot my ebay password and needed to go through some steps to get back in to my account. One of the options if you don't have access to whatever email address that is associated w/your ebay account is to have ebay place an automated call to whatever phone number they have on file for you, to give you a PIN number that you can enter on ebay to give you access to your ebay account again.
When you first pick up they say something about ebay and "if you are expecting this call, press 5."
I went through the whole process and was able to smoothly get back into my ebay account. So, this seems quite legit to me.
If people received this call unexpectedly, maybe your phone number is somehow wrongly associated with someone else's ebay account. Or perhaps someone else is trying to get into *your* ebay account. By answering this call it doesn't seem to me that you are risking anything. If someone is trying to get into your ebay account, but the call is being placed to a phone that is in your possession, then obviously the person trying to get into your account is not going to receive the PIN number so they're not going to be able to get into your account.
Ebay (Legit)
Yes this is eBay. When you go to make a sellers account, they will give you an option to call your phone to verify that you are who you say you are. When you pick answer the phone, a message machine will give you a confirm code to type in at the site. Also note, that unless you say something like, "Hello", the message will not start.
just got 3 calls says the call is from ebay. You are expecting this call press5. Then called back and said you are expecting this call press4. Did this three times and stopped.
How can I get REMOVED from this list? I'm being awakened at 2 or 3 every morning and can't get any sleep!
This call was asking for a Paypal confirmation PIN. I have not used Paypal in over two years......
No message left. Nothing automated. Called in the evening. If I don't know who is calling---I do nothing. Based upon these posts--I'll will continue to do so.
Just got this call, not sure why I got the call, I believe its a scam, trying to get info or some such
junk, it said something like "This is eBay, if your expecting this call press 7", I never did, I waited
on the the line expecting it to say something else it just kept repeating, I report all the fake emails,
I wonder how to report this --- DON'T PRESS ANY THING --- thats the best thing to do, just to hang up
I have not even ordered from Ebay or used paypal in a few months
Call came from 8477090211 Authentify Inc said calling for E-bay, and asked if I expected the call. I did not, so I kept letting it say it, after five times, I pushed 3 like it said, and it gave me a pin number, then hung up. I called it back without a response. I am NOT expecting a call from E-Bay, so I am completely dumbfounded, and do not know what to do now.
Ebay is rolling out a new way to prevent account takeover by verifying the pc you use to do the majority of your ebaying on. Called Ebay and looked into Ebay Announcements and found verification for this from a message on 10.28.08.
'If you're expecting this call, press zero' - they called my cell phone twice yesterday (10/30/08) - no idea who it was.
I had registered a new account on ebay and this was the number they called from to leave a PIN number. It is supposed to be their way of verifying that you are indeed the person opening the account. They will call any time of the day or night because when you registered it calls immediately. If you aren't the person opening the account on ebay, then obviously someone is trying to open one and using a bogus phone number (yours)
Called me twice within two minutes before 8:30 am when I work second shift. Left two messages, first one is "If you are expecting this call, press pound." Second one same thing except "press seven". Tried to call the number back but it just beeped like a hangup signal.
Reading other messages, I guess I'm glad it wasn't at 3 or 4 am! Sheesh!
I will try to get ahold of ebay/paypal and ensure no fraud.
DO NOT GIVE THIS NUMBER ANY INFORMATION.
This is a call from ebay to verify your phone number
We got this call @ 7:30am in the morning. There was no initiation by us for it at all. We don't even have a call-in Pin setup for our PayPal account. It came from Authentify Inc. I don't believe they are valid because the number that calls us back (on Caller ID) from PayPal shows up as Pay Pal Mobile.
I changed my email address for my paypal account (Comcast bought my ISP) and this was a part of the process of authentication. The automated call occurred within minutes of me changing my information.
I got called at 12:30 a.m. I didn't give them any information. We tried to call them back and it wouldn't go through.
I called the number back and got no answer left it ring for five min. (long distance) twice.
This site is for password verification. If you have forgotten your password and need to change it, you will be asked to choose from phone numbers on file for your account and informed that you will receive an immediate call. It comes within 30 seconds, asks if you were expecting the call, and contains a confirmation code to enter into your computer, enabling you to have access to whatever you were having a problem with.
Paypal, this is the number that called my phone when I went to the Paypal website and clicked on the link to confirm my address (info). It is legit.
PS: Don't bother with a callback, the number is busy 24/7!!
The Autovoice said "Hello, this is your financial institution. We cannot currently verify your current transaction. Please enter the security number on your screen at this time." I entered 666 and the Autovoice said "That is not a good number" and hung up. I imagine that whoever is running this is hoping to get lucky and catch someone on the computer who happens to be online banking. They're probably hoping for some sort of account number?
this number called 6 times within 5 minutes. i recently updated my phone number on my ebay with home phone number. when i received this phone call, it called my cell phone number which was really odd when i placed my home phone number, right?
callback from Microsoft to verify your request
called, but didn't leave a message.
this phone number came onto my computer and said it was from EBAY. On line i verified that was my phone number and clicked on "call". when the phone rang, 847-709-0211 showed on my caller ID. i didn't answer, just hung up. i don't think this is authenic.
I lost my PayPal security key. In order to remove the key from my account eBay had to call me and give me a code. If you get one of these calls, contact PayPal because someone has used your phone number to register their PayPal or eBay account.
Please enter your paypal phone password????Fuk r s....i'm in Canada??
this phone numer is form a verification system from ParyCashier(has somthing to do with PartyPoker).
if u get a call from this numer then sombody put your phone numer in his created account.
I had a whole bunch of fraud at Pay Pal, changed my password and got the same number at 11.44pm at that time I was at Pay Pal reporting the entire list of them.
This is the number that you get a call from when activating/installing PayPal's Virtual Debit Card. They authorize your install by phoning you with a PIN to enter into the website which lets them know that you are who is installing your virtual debit card.
it gave my last digits of phone nmumber and said that authentication was complete. they called at 0340 hours in the am. yikes!!
Ebay message leaving a pin and said step one authencation complete.
I have no idea...they are too goodto leave a message
First it was 651-289-4570 (Select Comfort?) calling me a dozen times a day and now it's this damn number. UGH!
Called 3 times in one hour with the PayPal message...called PayPal and reported, they said it must be a mistake, disregard the message! Great Protection, they didn't even seem concerned.
Yes, this is a paypal number.
Might want to be careful, and call paypal, someone could be frauding.
This call was for entering a Paypal confirmation PIN of some sort. It also called at 4:42AM EST! Nothing that I know about or requested at any time.
