Ive gotten several calls as well, since I dont waste my cell time answering calls from numbers that I dont know I have never answered, like some of your complaints I did not pick them got stuck with them for a 2 year contract when Alltel sold out to them and sold me along with the deal.My cell phone bill is paid every month 10 days early since they could'nt get me to answer their calls they sent me a text and told me that if my bill was not paid they would shut off my service, I pay my bill every month in person at one of their stores here, so got them involved and the issue resolved,just to be billed for the past due balance this month.Will finish out the contract with them that I got stuck with and take my business to another cell phone company.

This number is from AT&T Wireless. And it's usually a computer automated call, telling you to contact AT&T about your cell phone bill. Probably due to past or non payment.

I don't know why it shows up as unknown. It's not a good idea, as we can see, because it does make people think it's a scam. I was a week late on my phone bill, and I just paid through the online service instead of calling back. But there it is, listed as a number for AT&T, on their website.

If you have called back and the rep told you they didn't know about the number, chances are they didn't take the time to look and they do not know the first thing about outbound calls.
If you do not use AT&T consider this amazing prospect: someone used your number as their home/business contact or you are using a ported out/recycled number! Amazing isn't it. Now granted if they ask for your entire ssn (after about 2008) do not give it to them, AT&T will not ask for this information they will ask for the last 4 if you are not the primary account holder. This caller cannot tell you why they called because its against the law. However, calling about a debt is not against the law, even if its the wrong number. Try to bring it up in court, guess what they will say!? They will say why didn't you answer the phone and ask to be removed from the list. If it doesn't work the first time try again. If it still doesn't work THEN you can get pissed off and I think out of all these comments ive seen maybe 2 people who had that problem. If you guys are so upset that AT&T won't give out the nature of the call on a voicemail or give it to you without verification, consider that you probably wouldn't appreciate it if all of your buddies knew you weren't paying your bill on time. If they didn't call the primary account holder its because the dialer is set up to call the lowest number first. Annoying yes, a scam, no. Its completely ridiculous that all of you people are so quick to call scam when you could just as easily have scrolled down a little bit in google and found the official AT&T website that includes THIS NUMBER. If you think you paid your bill and you're still getting these calls there is a good chance its because your payment didn't go through or its an issue with a deposit etc. It would be in your best ineterst to answer the call and take care of it so your phones aren't turned off for nonpayment then you have to come crying to the company that you just talked all this crap about begging to get your phones turned back on. Now I know AT&T may not be the best all around company in the whole world, but seriously, calling innocent people scammers when you're just too lazy to check google is just as wrong as the scam you think they are committing (that is if you are like me and think stupidity should be a crime punishable by imprisonment). Also unless you're are a complete moron you should know better than to give out your entire ssn to someone who calls you. I mean come on people use a little common sense.
As for the gentleman who threatened to kill the rep, very mature, and I do hope you realize that this is illegal and that same representative has every legal right to track YOUR number (even if its not with AT&T) and have the police show up at your door for a death threat. I get a call from this number almost every day. They never leave a message so it must be a sales call - if they had a real reason to call me, they would leave a message.

Whenever you get calls (or emails for that matter) asking for personal info, acct#, card#, etc. politely decline and call back using a phone number you got independently.

Scam artists.... They hacked my AT&T account, changed the address where my bills should go, set up a security block on my online account, and then just mailed me a copy of my bill and told me I had to pay them $200 in "charges that I had not been billed for in the past" and that I would now start receiving 2 paper bills from AT&T (i'm guessing hoping I would pay them AND pay AT&T). I was told to contact 800-947-5096 to settle my account. Obviously this is false; when I spoke with ATT representatives a few weeks ago, they had no idea what happened and my account is flagged for fraud now. I caught this problem before receiving this request for money because they had hacked my email as well.

ok, i just verified that YES this number is in fact the main ATT billing department.

After i made my transaction with them, i got paranoid after reading all these posts, so i decided to contact ATT directly from the main number on their website, and verify that i made a payment within the last 20 minutes.
They were able to do so, and also verify what was discussed on the call and the amount I just paid over the phone.
So I am 100% CERTAIN that this is not a scam, it trully is in fact ATT, but if you don't want to pay your bill, hey thats OK with me ;)

so just respond to these emails by calling the number on the main ATT website if you are not sure, never an annonymous line.

I have had them for more than a dozen years and I think I am 3 days late and they called to tell me my account was PAST DUE. It's their job I guess , but it makes you feel like canceling and saying I will live without a cell phone. What happened to the good ole days when you didn't feel compelled to be in touch 24/7 with the world. People can call me at work or at home , but NO they call the cell phone...Think I am going to cancel that saves me $182 a month or almost $2200 a year.

An extremely rude man called, threatening to terminate my service to extort a $36 reactivation fee if I wouldn't give him my credit card information. Because I've been parasitized by these monsters before, I refused to give information, paid my ATT bill online during our conversation, and immediately called ATT after the unidentified caller barked at me for "totally ignoring what [he] said."

ATT has no record of any calls to me from billing and recommended that I report this call to law enforcement. Please do not give these monsters your billing information or SSN!

I don't have an AT%T account (if that's who this number really belongs to), I sure can't figure out why they would be calling me.

They should not be asking for your social security number. If you have an account with them, you already gave it to them. They already have enough information to know about your account.

This is att calling about my cell phone bill. I am sure because I don't have my number listed for any other creditors and I am late with my bill, obviously they have my cell number because they provide the service. These guys service is horrible, when I try to make a call I can't but when they need to leave a message because I am late with my payment, the phone rings like no tomorrow! I told them that's the reason my payment is late all the time, I can't even use the phone for the outragous prices that they are charging me. 6 disconnections during one 2 hour phone call, GIVE ME A BREAK.

Just rcv'd call from these folks. It's a robocall. Take my advice, DO NOT ANSWER, IT IS A SCAM. This is a phishing operation. They will take you for all you have on your credit cards. It just happens to be a coincidence that so many people are late with their AT&T wireless bills. Think about all of the millions of AT&T customers there are in the US. If a certain % of them are late with their bill then they assume it is a legit call. It's a similar scam as the Expired Auto Insurance phishing scam. Again, DO NOT ANSWER, IT IS A SCAM!!!

This is likely a phishing attempt. We do not have AT&T and never have, despite voice mail stating that we have an account with them.
Please, do not give any personal info to the "nice" customer service lady. If you cooperate with this "nice lady" she is likely to
not only scam you, but then report that she didn't violate the do not call rules because you called her. Contact your phone service provider to report the problem,
and have them block this phone number from being able to call you.

These calls are not scams, just annoying. That 800 number is for the AT&T Receivables Management Department (collections). I don't have AT&T wireless, and never have. Nonetheless, I received "the call" today. I called back and spoke to a fairly nice and helpful customer service person. They have apparently been getting lots of calls from folks with similar stories. Although it remains to be seen whether the calls actually will stop, the CSR said that he took steps to make them stop. He did ask for my SS#, but I refused and he didn't press the issue. His explanation for that was to see if anyone had opened an account using my SS# (identity theft).

call 611 or get online access to your account. no customer rep will ever ask for your full SSN for existing service, only the last four digits. that's because the only part of your SSN customer service reps can see on their computers..

Been receiving calls every day for past few days. Message plays long rambling automated call. I finally got tired of having it everyday, so I just called the number. I was buying the whole thing until--I thought it was strange when the guy asked me for my name. I figured- ok, maybe wants to make sure I don't have an AT&T bill by name. But, I knew it was dicey when he asked me what my cell phone number was! I told him I wouldn't be giving it to him. He then kept putting me on hold so this could be "resolved today". There was no point in staying on the phone- there is something dicey in this operation. Whatever it is- I hung up and didn't wait around to find out anything more. Don't bother!

I've been receiving calls from this number on a consistent basis for the past year, as well as various other "strange" calls. I've never had AT&T or Cingular. I switched to Verizon last year, which is when all the "strange" calls began. Now, I'm curious as to whether Verizon sells phone numbers!! Anyway, I called the number back and attempted to speak with a customer service representative. However, once connected, no one ever identified as a rep. I only heard hushed sounds on the line, so I hung-up the phone after a few minutes. I think it may be a collaboration with Verizon.

they called 3/5/09 and left a message asking me to call back re: my ATT wireless account. Since i have never had an ATT acount, i called the number to inform them they had called a wrong number. The very polite lady on their end asked for my SSN so she could check to see what the problem might be. I refused to give it to her and she told me she would be unable to help me correct the confusion without my SSN. I refused again, and she wished me a "nice day" before hanging up. It sure sounds like a phishing scam to me.

FIRST, PEOPLE -- do not ever, ever, -- never never never give your SS# or other protected info to someone who calls you, no matter who they say they are, or even if you can verify it. Get their #. Then verify independently it's them. Then call them back. Even then, why does that person need your SS# if they are calling you, unless you are applying for a loan or such?

The call was as others, from AT&T, saying how to pay the bill blah blah. Then a person came on and asked to speak to (name of person whose old phone number we have, and who receives LOTS of creditor calls). I explained, she said thanks and tried to hang up. I stopped her and made her promise she would remove our #, and finally got her to say the word "yes."

One of the websites that came up was AT&T and YES it is their number. So if you did give them your SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER DON'T WORRY - THEY ARE WHO THEY SAY THEY ARE. From their site

I told them on the phone my cell, home and u-verse are all current all paid within the last couple of weeks, none past due, call me again and I will sue their asses.

This is a number for AT&T's Receivables Mgmt. When I called back 800-947-5096, they did ask for my SS#, which I did not give them due to the fact that I could not find this particular number listed as a valid contact # on their website. I should add that I do not have AT&T's wireless service, but do have it for my home phone and internet.

Upon calling the AT&T wireless number listed on the site, they did inform me that they could not provide any information as to why I am receiving the calls, because the records do not show me having wireless service with them (go figure), but that the number provided (800-947-5096) is a legitimate number for that department, and suggested I call about my landline service instead to see if there is a mixup on that end.

They called me today. Tried to get my SSN. I said no. They were able to tell me that I had AT&T service in 2006 from my phone number - the one that they called - and that a refund check was sent to me in the amount of $6.88 in 2006 when the account was closed. Said the bill showed paid in full. They showed no outstanding bills or other information.

Annoying that they call, leave a recording (even when you answer in person), ask you to call back to deal with them. I went through multiple persons and recordings before getting to a 'real' person.

On a good note, she was very apologetic that I am getting calls from this number saying I owe on a bill when they don't see anything...

They left a partial message on my machine telling how to check my bill and pay using my cell phone. It then said it was AT&T and then gave a callback number.

I don't know why they'd call me. My bill isn't due yet.

I have gotten about a dozen of these robo-calls telling me it is "an important message about an amount due on your wireless service" and that I should call AT&T. These calls come to my direct line at work, which is not associated with any wireless account I have. If this isn't AT&T, the company needs to track down the source before AT&T's reputation gets trashed. If it is AT&T, the company needs to simply stop.

UPDATE, after reading all the comments, I would bet 100% this is a scam, this is the second phone number I made Tracfone give me, The first phone number asigned to my tracfone I got 2 pfishing scams from a Los Angeles exchange asking for checking account info. BEWARE EVERYBODY!

Received 2 calls from this number. Yes, it's the New AT&T. I called the number back and negotiated thru the voice menu to talk to a customer service rep. I advised him that I had been receiving calls from them and wanted them to stop (incidentally, I am a Verizon customer and have NEVER had wireless service with AT&T/Cingular. And I've been on the National Do Not Call list since it's inception). The customer service rep was very professional and helpful and placed my number on their Do Not Call list (they'll need your wireless number and an e-mail address. I refused to give my e-mail, so the service rep supposedly used his). The whole process took about 15 minutes. Now it just remains to be seen if the calls have indeed been stopped.

I just received an email telling me to call this number, regarding my att wireless account. I went to their website to view my bill, current charges, and to make sure my last payment posted. Everything looks good. Don't know why they sent the email. I'm going to disregard it. Maybe it was sent to my email address in error??? Sounds like from other comments its regarding late payments. However, I went to the contact info on their website and no where is that number one of them. And I am not late on my payment.

Folks, if you were late on *any* cellular service, you would receive a courtesy call with a proper caller-id and message (if you don't pick up) .. if you were *truly* late with a real cellular provider, your service would be suspended.

Since this number is from Cingular (presumably) *and* I've never had Cingular ... it stands to reason that you should not call them back. If you wonder if anything is amiss with your cell service then simply call your cell provider!!! Don't call these clowns back!

They emailed me on my business email account. I don't know how they got that info. The email said to call AT&T Wireless at 800-947-5096 regarding my account. I don't have AT&T service and neither does my company. I'm confused, especially to be getting the message via email.

Some of these reports are just plain weird!! I get these calls from this number whenever I am late with my payment with AT&T. If I pay on time, they don't call (now isn't that novel??). Never been a problem for me, I just call them back and either make the payment or make payment arrangements. They have never disconnected my phone at the end of a call, they have never been rude, nor phished for any information from this number. All they ask is for you to verify the last 4 digits of your SSN, and that is for YOUR safety, its to verify that no one else is trying to access your acct. I don't know about all these OTHER reports at all. I certainly cannot validate all the other folks who say this is a lying, cheating, lowdown scum phishing company because thats not been my experience at all.

receive call on 4/19/08 and 4/20/08 from this number. Tried calling it back..it does go to new att wireless phone tree. They left msg on our landline. We do have att wireless phones but they are pre-paid!! Can't be debt collection as do don't owe a person a dime especially on prepaid phones! Additionally these calls come at 8ish CST. When u call the number back the pre paid folks have already left for the day.

I'm pissed because both times my husband and I were enjoying a wonderful grilled dinner on the patio at sunset when that damn msg come on answering machine. On4/19 we just let it go to voice mail. On 4/20 I damn near broke my neck trying to get to the phone then ate came back to table to eat cold food.

I plan to persue this after the call back on 4/19 was to remove our number from their marketing list. Not only did they blow 2 nights of romantic dinners but for what? I receive calls from this phone number twice a day at work - not on my home or cell phone. I NEVER answer the phone if the call is unknown or from a phone number I do not recognize. Whomever they are, they need to check their automated message. The message seems to start as soon as the phone rings so by the time the voicemail picks up, the automated message is already half-way through. I never get to hear who is calling and barely make out the phone number. Since I don't know who it was that called I don't call back.

Something fishy here. If they really Cingular; why are they calling my (former) home number? Cingular should be calling me on the cell phone they sold me if it's a legitimate call. I got so many bogus calls on my home phone I hooked my fax and an answering machine to it and made it my published business fax number. I never answer it anymore, I was getting sales calls at 9pm and as early as 7am. Most of the folks I want to interface with know my cell #, the rest can leave a message. The call from Cingular must be uncool.

OK, here's a good one. I called the number back to tell them I don't HAVE ATT and to leave me alone (mind you, they are calling on my WORK number). So, he asks me my NAME so he can note my call...I give him my first name and then he asks for my LAST name, which I told him I did not wish to provide and was it necessary? He said it was and I told him I would NOT give him my last name and he said then he could not help me!!!!!!!!!! He did explain that they would be calling for a late charge on a bill and that perhaps the person who used to work here had given them this number at one time (which I am sure was what happened), but he also said there is NO WAY to find my number and have it removed, unless I have the wireless number they are calling about. Great way to do business huh?

We kept getting this call every morning at around 9:30 am (Eastern Time); finally we called back the phone number for the "important information about the account". They wouldn't give any info about the account, but wanted us to pay the bill with them. They asked a lot of questions, giving no info. Later, talking to AT&T, they had NO RECORD of ever having called the phone number.

I have never established any kind of service or bought any kind of product from Bell South "Mobility" in my entire life, neither with AT&T, nor Cingular; however, strangely enough, after I have for bad services reasons, two months ago canceled my LAND LINE plus INTERNET connections from Bell South, I then last week, received a notice of collections in the amount of US$120.46 from an account the collections agency alleges it was established in 1997!

As I'd informed the presumed agency I have only and exclusively used Verizon Wireless for my cellular services throughout my entire life, they (Afni, Inc. P.O. Box 3427, Bloomington, IL 61702-3427) informed me in a very nasty tone that "I need" to provide them proof, via receipts from Bell South, that I had been “released” from the aforementioned debt.

As I mentioned to the attendant that this is ridiculous, as “how to present receipts from a service I didn’t use, request or bought”, the Afni’s attendant told me literally that “I was not being forced to pay”, but “the record” would remain unless I dispute it.

As I made contact with the telephone 1-800-947-5096 which now belongs to AT&T, since it bought Bell South and Cingular companies a year ago, the attendant just told in blunt terms, he would not be able to help me, though there was NO OUTSTANDING BALANCE REGARDING TO MY RECORDS, however my information had BEEN SOLD TO a collections company that might even have re-sold it to another one. (sic)

I have filed a complaint with the Kansas Attorney General for harassment tactics from AT&T. We had poor service and changed carriers. They have flooded our phones and mail boxes with junk about wanting us back and info about our account. We do not have AT&T/Cingular and will never consider either again. I keep getting calls even though I did file with the AG. They just could pay big time. Keep it up folks!

ATT is the largest cell/phone company in the nation!!! They don't need to hide their identity because they can cut off your phone service. Phishers can call randomly and hit an ATT or Cingular customer, maybe 1 in 3? They are phishing for your info--don't give it!!!
I'm surprised that ATT hasn't looked into this-it's been going on for years. Maybe you can't blame this scam on them, but the fact that they haven't alerted their customers is a sign of why their customers think it could be them--their business practices are not the best, IMHO. (From a 10 year cingular customer-they still have the best plans for us!)

These imbeciles call whenever my corporate phone's bill is overdue. My company pays every quarter (according to the deal they made iwth their Cigular rep) so i get calls the four or five days before the bill is paid. Cingular/ATT is really screwed up, so I just ignore them. If I answer the people who are calling seem to be uneducated and rude.

This is a scam. It is easy to fall for if you have AT&T/Cingular service. This is just like fishing websites. Make sure you initiate any calls that involve billing information. If a company calls you always call back the number that you have for the company, NOT the number left in a message or on the caller id.

Most will go by an abbreviation because it is illegal for them to give third party information out (even on an answering machine) and most have some kind of banking/money related term associated with their name.

I dialed Cingular/AT&T through 611 and they verified that this is indeed their financial department, calling to collect on a past due balance. I think it's legit, but I would not answer and call Cingular/AT&T yourself to inquire.

A person that identified herself as Connie Allen asked for SS# and account/personal information claiming that she needed the info to process a refund. Told her to leave a number, found this info, and decided it was best not to call back. Check arrived soon after without problems -- beware.

I had a call this am from the 1-800-947-5096 #. I let the machine pick-up as I was busy. The "new" AT&T was calling about my account. The thing is, I don't have one. A week ago, my husband had his cell phone stolen so I thought I'd better call and see if someone else had opened an account in our name. They couldn't "verify" and account without our social security #s. I GAVE THEM! No. They couldn't find an account! Immediately after the phone call I got the sinking feeling I had just made myself a victim of Identity Theft! I called the police to report it then called all three credit reporting agencies and bought a $129 "fraud insurance package" from EQUIFAX!THEN I reversed the phone number and found this site. Hours of my day are shot! I'm out $129 that I wouldn't have otherwise spent AND my stress level I'm sure is off the charts. PLUS I feel like a darn fool for giving out social security info over the phone. How many times have we all heard, "NEVER GIVE PERSONAL INFO OVER THE PHONE! This number has been calling every morning at the same time for the last three days but the ID just says Toll Free Number. The voice just says to call the number to settle your bill but DOES NOT identify WHAT bill I am supposedly late on. How do I know this isn't a scam?? This really ticks me off. We are receiving calls about once a month from this number leaving an automated message stating that our service will be disconnected if we do not pay our bill. When we call Cingular, they state correctly that our balance is $0.00. But they could not explain why we keep getting the calls.

Yes, this is Cingular calling. They will get you on the phone and claim you MUST give them your Credit Card info or have your phone turned off at the end of the call. Do this: Stall them with excuse like 'hang on a sec gotta get my card' or 'hang on a sec and let me pull up my records.' While they are stalled, go to Cingular.com and pay your bill online. Get the confirmation code! Then tell the person on the phone that you just paid the bill online and have a confirmation code and if your phone gets cut off you can sue them for cutting it off AFTER payment was made. Yee-ha!

I get the call from 800-947-5096 about every other month. Three times I have had "staff" check into having the calling stop and have been told 3 times that I should get NO MORE CALLS. I just got another call on 5/22. They know what they're doing - RIGHT! What's really amazing is that the calls come on my NEXTEL - I don't even have Cingular Wireless!!! Probably never will if they harass noncustomers like this!

It's Cingular...oh wait it's like they say "The New AT&T"...LOL I can tell you first they will track you down. First they call my cell and then 10sec. later called my house. The Caller ID say "TollFree Number" and then this recording comes on saying that you are past due on your bill and then a real person comes on and tells you the same, but one catch ONCE they get you on the phone you MUST PAY or your service will disconnect at the END of the CALL... Trust me it happened to me today. I told them I would not give personal info over the phone to someone that; I would go online and pay it in 5 to 10mins. she would not let me do that and had me on the phone back & forward for about 15mins, so I hung up on her and went online to pay... and my service disconnected by then..(reconnection cost me $36.00 per phone).... SO WHATEVER YOU DO... DO NOT ANSWER UNLESS YOU GOING GIVE THEM PERSONAL INFO OVER THE PHONE TO SOMEONE THAT CLAIMS TO BE FROM CINGULAR & AT&T... When I said I would call Cingular and settle the account, this way I know it is ligitimate and not a scam of getting my CC info. She insists that my service may be discontinues and that online payment service may have already been disabled, this even after I assured that I would call back to settle immediately. False info. I was able to make payments online still. Suspected the call was a scam I tried to see who really was calling.
