Yes it is really capital one from their many thousands of phone numbers. I hate this; every time I don't pay the bill LINDA calls with some exciting opportunities for me. Or so she says.

Mike: I'm not sure how much you'd be held liable for your Mom's debts in your state, but my reaction would be the same for a living or dead debtor. Get the collector to validate, if it can. It's not your job to verify anything they think is owed.

To answer Eddie this Spring, there is indeed a law against "insane calling at the crack of dawn" and lots of other bad collector behavior. Go find the FDCPA and learn your rights at FTC-dot-gov.

I keep receiving phone calls from these people for my MOTHER who passed away 5 months ago. As the executor on the BROKE estate, I keep getting these phone calls. I've told them all, there is no money...my mother just did not have any money and there is nothing in the estate. Since they got my name, I am now an authorized person to discuss the account. "And although you are not obligated, would you like to make a payment on the account to bring it up to date?" Ummm....why? I loved my mother but this is HER debt, not mine. I'm sorry you extended credit to her and she passed away and now, you aren't going to get your money back. There is nothing I can do...my hands are tied, you are going to have to write it off as bad debt. I wish I had the logon information for the account...I REALLY like the idea one person on here had of setting the account's phone numbers to Capitol One's 804 number...THAT would be sweet revenge, let their automated system call THEM non stop instead of ME!!!

I respond to this sort of call in my usual manner...either in Japanese or Korean. I have also been known to say "Hello" over and over again, pretending I am having trouble hearing. I occasionally resort to speaking with a very thick middle Eastern accent, proclaiming that "Mohammad is not here. This is Ibn Khaldun." If there are repeat calls, I have used my freon air horn...very effective. Use your imagination and screw these guys at their own game.

OK, here is how you deal with these unwanted and harassing calls. I have several cell phone lines...and I recently bought another for a very small fee. I give this as my telephone number and turn the ringer off. I check it daily to see if there are any real business calls. I have changed all potential nuisance calls to that number. BTW, this is NOT fraud, as it is indeed a real phone number, registered in my name...I just never answer it. My phone is just that...MY PHONE! I do NOT do business over a phone line...and I make that clear on any and all accounts. It doesn't matter if the call is legitimate or not; I answer the calls I wish to answer...and no others. If a legitimate business has issues with me, they can write.

Payback's a b***h:

I got tired of "Linda" calling all the time so I did a little research and found a Capital One phone number located in Richmond that's answered by a person. I believe it's a call center. ( 804-967-1000 )

Next I went to Capitol One's site, logged into my account and changed my cell phone contact number to 804-967-1000. Since the system they're using is automated, I added the same number to home, work and alternate. Now the automated system calls the call center using all 4 numbers. Given that when I was called they would sometimes call several times a day. I figure that call center is getting 8 calls + or - when the system fires up.

And that ladies and gents is how you Rick Roll Capital One and waste they're time and money. :-)

2010-07-07 03:20:03 UTCTired of Linda

I called "Linda" back one day. The outsourced call center rep said that she was a Capital One rep, that Linda was a recording, and that she needed my credit card number. I told her that since "Linda" was calling me at all hours of the day, I only wanted to speak with "Linda" and if she didn't get "Linda" on the phone with me, that I was going to hang up. :D I drove them nuts for a change!

2010-06-30 23:09:45 UTCm

have called 3-4x today but leave no message. i looked at my account, and payment is due July 6 (tomorrow)...so whats the hassle with them?

2010-06-08 13:39:46 UTCRG

I got an annoying call at 8 am and the woman calling left a message saying wat you doin then hung up.

2010-05-21 04:45:34 UTCFED UP

I GET ONE MORE CALL FROM HELLO THIS IS LINDA.. I HAVE SOME SOLUTIONS FOR YOU I AM GOING TO BREAK HER NECK

2010-05-20 18:27:20 UTCDonna

They keep asking for Jessie Donmon - or at least that's what it sounds like. They want me to press one if its me and 2 if its not. I press 2 about 3 times before it clicks off, but they never stop calling and won't give me an opportunity to let them know they have a wrong number. This happens several times daily and has been going on for several weeks or months. I've lost count.

2010-04-08 17:13:15 UTCWTF

I HAVE AN ACCOUNT, DUE TO SERIOUS MEDICAL ISSUES HAVE FALLEN BEHIND. I HAVE TRIED TO MAKE ARRAGEMENTS, BUT THEY ONLY WANT HUGE AMOUNTS. I THINK THE FEES SHOULD STOP THEN PEOPLE MIGHT BE ABLE TO PAY OFF

2010-04-08 16:06:47 UTCDDR

Capitol One has been great with us .. So if this really Capitol One they need help in PROFESSIONALISM. If you call someone you need to SPEAK or atleast LEAVE A MESSAGE. So irritating... Sounds more like a marketing firm hired by Capitol One.

2010-03-22 15:38:11 UTCEddie

Its Capital One!! They called me at 5:17 in the MORNING!!! I answer and all I hear is silence!! Then they called again at 7:30 AM!!! I did not answer and they leave no Message!!! There has to be some kind of law for this insane calling at the crack of dawn!!! I am better then current on my bills. In fact I'm up to date on payments and I am at about 90% credit available so I have no Idea why they are calling me!! PLUS My next bill isn't due for another 3 weeks!!

2010-02-04 17:57:35 UTCkweenB

Thank you all for your postings. I've been plagued for MONTHS! I've followed the suggestion of setting to NO RING and identifying as Cap One-Boo1, Boo2, etc. Great strategy.

2010-01-21 19:29:51 UTCMark

Capital One, but they have also used 909-391-1798 and 951-243-2302 all this week so far.

NOT CAPITAL ONE. THIS IS FRAUD. THEY DO NOT ACT PROFESSIONAL AND SLUR THEIR WORDS. DO NOT RESPOND TO ANY OF THESE PHONE CALLS FROM THIS NUMBER.

2010-01-19 16:02:02 UTCbilsuks

Hey Bill, what does who you voted for have to do with them calling you. I didn't vote for Obama, I don't vote at all. You should be concerned with the morons who drank the Kool-aid voted for Bush not once but twice.

2010-01-07 17:01:11 UTCnone

2009-12-03 16:33:10 UTCtruchas

capital one continues to call from a variety of numbers in the L. A. area which i deduct as method to get me to answer the phone. m number is a new AT&T mobile and they obviously track new registered numbers...I put it on the national do not call registry right away but doesnt seem to matter...

2009-11-16 16:31:59 UTCNo C1

I am pretty sure this is a scam I do not know how they got my number!!!!

2009-11-12 00:37:02 UTCMr. B.

You don’t even have to be a Cap 1 card-holder to get these mutts humping on your leg. My friend has NEVER done business with them, and they are ringing his phone off his belt because a relative he never co- signed for is delinquent on his own card and they can’t find any number for him. Make no mistake, that sort of thing is not “just doing their job“, it is a clear violation of federal law and these bottom-feeders know it. They are just betting their victims don’t. Even those who do owe are not obligated to tolerate this abuse. REPORT these scum! P.S. to Bill; Save your breath, you’ll need it to blow up your date!

2009-11-06 16:31:18 UTCCarol

According to the consumer rights agencies they are not allowed to call before 8am or after 9pm. I have gotten calls starting at 5;30am for over 2 weeks now and have reported them for harrassment by mail. I will not take their calls as threats are against the law.

2009-11-06 14:38:43 UTCJayin46304

Dear Bill, Go fuck yourself. Some of us do not have credit cards or mortgages or anything because we do know how to manage our finances. Now, I would be willing to put money down that all of us have sprint. This happens every other month with my sprint phone. Some random company calls for a week or two then it stops.

2009-10-28 03:25:41 UTCSandra

Bill Dodger, you are an idiot. The phone calls are coming from Capitol One and they are not over late payments.. read the comments you Palin voter.

2009-10-08 14:31:18 UTCFrustrated

I have a Capital One card and I am not late and they won't stop calling. They start at about 8:30 and dont end till about 8:30pm. I am very frustrated with them. I even have payments scheduled to be pulled out in advance. What is up with these people. LEAVE US ALONE!

And I don't have a visa card or Capital One anything.

2009-09-17 15:36:22 UTCRuth

2009-09-06 21:04:11 UTCyules

If you're getting tons of unwanted calls on your cell phone, a good thing to do is simply save the unwanted caller in your contacts (I save all my debt collectors under "Boo1, Boo2, Boo3, etc.) and set the ring tones for those callers as "No ring". That seemed to shut Linda from Capital One right up :-).

2009-08-22 01:55:39 UTCFED UP

This is one of 10 numbers that Capital One have called me from. It started around July 21st and went on until August 1st. Then nothing and it started up again on August 17th. Same numbers, same stupid message from "Linda" calling to tell me about some "special opportunities" - always the same annoying recorded message asking me to call back a special 800 number (800-955-6600). At least 2-4 calls every day starting as early as 8:30 am and going right up until 8:40 pm at night. They even called on a SUNDAY!!! THREE calls on a SUNDAY - 10:07 a.m., 1:09 pm and 6:29 p.m. I have been keeping a log of all the calls because I am getting fed up and ready to report them. This is now bordering on harassment! I DON'T EVEN HAVE AN ACCOUNT WITH THEM!

2009-06-24 18:43:28 UTCrou

What a bunch of freaks!!! Leave a fucking message if it's so important!(Oh , thats right dialers do not leave messages, we have to rely on the hired help to talk to.)These people bore me- Cap one-

2009-06-05 00:34:06 UTCrr

They have called like 10 times today and have not left a message.

2009-06-04 20:11:13 UTCng

Its a recording from Linda at Capital One with some "special" opportunities. Yeh, im sure the are. Not a collection call. They call all the damn time.

2009-05-06 21:43:09 UTCRich

Capital one keep's calling me from different numbers with So Cal area codes 714, 909 & 303

2009-05-06 13:55:23 UTCJk

I have a Capital One card but it's not past due. Yet they call me 10 times a day from different phone numbers. I just answer and lay the phone down until they hang up. I figure it's costing THEM money, not me!

2009-05-06 12:19:31 UTCDonna

I am tired of them callling me from different phone numbers all the time all hours of the day and nite

2009-05-06 12:12:24 UTCsac

Getting calls at 8am from this number, left no message. I called back and it is Capital One collections looking for someone named Adam. They insisted that it was my account and wanted my social security number which I obviously would not provide. I requested that they remove my number from their records as I do not and have never had a Capital One account and do not know any Adam. They insisted that someone at this number owed them money. If they call again I will report them.

2009-04-26 21:07:24 UTCRex

My 12 year old son just got a cell phone. He has received several calls from 714-374-8035. The woman left voice messages saying her name was Linda and she had some opportunities at Capital One that he should know about. She left an 800 number.

2009-04-26 19:35:51 UTCKp

714-374-8035 Captital one debt collector all day all night 7 days a week now they are in trouble and will lay off. The people then will inderstand the bank should work with us. The Bank should drop all the late fees that causes the account to go over and compound over limit fees on that. I have paid months double payments and no credit for that! Now I am laid off and I one can even pay mid payment due to all their overhead fees. Very creative when they leave messages Captital One has opportunities to call them back.

2009-04-24 03:46:35 UTCEvie

They call very often and do not leave any message. My Cell phone identifies it as no name. They call any time of the morning and day.

How do I stop them from calling?

  1. Ask the unwanted caller to stop calling and put you on their do not call list (they are legally required to comply).
  2. If your number is registered with the National Do Not Call Registry you can file a complaint with the FTC.
  3. Block them with a call blocker:
