How do I stop them from calling?
- Ask the unwanted caller to stop calling and put you on their do not call list (they are legally required to comply).
- If your number is registered with the National Do Not Call Registry you can file a complaint with the FTC.
- Block them with a call blocker:
Uniden DECT1288 blocks up to 20 numbers, plus Private and Unknown, with the reject tone, without ringing the phone.
Panasonic KX-TG106 blocks up to 30 numbers, plus all unidentified callers, with a busy tone, after the phone rings once.
JF Teck Caller ID with Ring Controller blocks up to 70 numbers, and can be set to always allow up to 100 to ring through.

They keep calling asking for a person whom I do not know. I have filed a complaint with the FTC under the Fair Debt Collection Act.
Portfolio Recovery is a junk debt collector. When confronted they are rude, asked them to mail me documentation and they have yet to send me any paperwork verifying said debt was 2 years ago. They have started their tactics again since I have moved and now have another #.
drop dead !!!!!!!!!!!!
Called at 8>42 this morning. I answered, said "Hello" 4 times, and no one answered, though I could hear them in the background, then they hung up.
These are bulllies, thieves, thugs and vermin of the worst kind. Yes, you can tell them to stop calling you, but beware, these bottom-feeding scum are quite likey to issue a fraudulent 1099-C to the IRS when you do.
If you have an advocate, say a lawyer or someone at the attorney general's office, you may actually get a response to your correspondance. I got a letter from some lawyer on their staff saying the reason they issued the 1099-C is because they had "decided to cease collection efforts" on this totally UNVERIFIED debt.
The jerks did not cost us any extra taxes, but stole many hours of precious time from me while I wrote letters and photocopied documents, etc, to make compaints to the Atty. General, the USPS (postal fraud), the IRS of course, disputing the validity of the 1099-C, and the FTC. I also sent documented complaints to my Senator and Congresscritters, members of the Best Congress Money Can Buy, who plan to do nothing to help the public vis a vis the banksters.
So, anyhow, long story short, these vermin have called today for the 223rd time since they "decided to cease collection efforts" in early September of 2010. Two years ago. Human slime, impossible to wash off.
I run my phone line through my computer via a dialup modem and use CallClerk sofware, turn the phone ringer off and set Call Clerk to ring the computer speakers. I never hear unwanted calls, and Call Clerk takes care of unwanted calls. callclerk.com I have no interest in Call Clerk or it's developer other than being a satisfied customer. Solet Portfolio call there little hearts out :-)
Portfolio Recovery---3rd time today with a different phone number.
Portfolio Recovery is a Nasdaq listed stock (PRAA). They collect old debts. They called and asked for my ex-wife - I've been divorced for over 10 years.
Heather: Under federal law collection calls are perfectly legal any day of the year. Only your state law or a notice revoking call permission might overcome this.

Called and hung on when they got my machine, on a Sunday. Surely this is not legal.
This number called me tonight with Caller ID showing Sunrocket DID. I did a search here and it says
a company called Portfolio Recovery which appears to be a collection agency.
The many tricks these collection agencies use to collect debts is discusting.
this is the scumbag company portfolio recovery NOT sunrocket........buys junk debits and tries to intimidate and harass you into paying some debit that may or may not be yours, with 50+ phone numbers just about all the debits they buy are way past the statue of limitations and they cant do anything, but if you acknowledge them they can start the debit clock all over again.....I have them listed in my cellphone as scumbag1/scumbag2 and so on, all the way up to 22 so far
