Not all of us can be like you Joe. We don't cave in to pressure and threats. Actually, according to published need stories, almost 1/2 it the current personal debt owed is due to fraud. Besides, who are you to tell people what they should do? Do you know the curcumstances behind each and everyone that has posted here? Most likely not. Portfolio services are crooks. They are coming after me because of an account that I never had 12 years ago. There is a thing known as credit profiling. My credit report shows addresses that I never lived at but someone got a piece of mail there with my name on it and it went on my credit report. But I block their calls and never have to bother with them. They like to argue and are rude. They don't listen to the whole story. I hope FTC nails them to the wall.

This Portfolio Recovery Associates is a malignant scamming company. They hire drones of collectors to harass people, even at random, and they hope to find old senile prospects who are confused and give in to their harassment and pay them money, perhaps a lot of money and the drone collectors receive a commission.

Really - a very long prison sentence needs to be given to these criminal scammers...including the employees who are complicit in these crimes.

Any collection agency that violates the FDCPA may be sued. Consumers can find more information at ftc.gov

There is much controversy over statute of limitations in all states. Even within the states, judges don't agree on the dates which really does a lot for the whole situation.

Most of the time, if you approach these bozos with a formal letter sent certified mail, return receipt requested and tell them to cease communications until they fully validate the debt, they will sell it to another bozo collector who will proceed to attempt to collect on it. When I say fully validate the debt, I mean specifically state in your letter for them to provide documents proving you actually signed a cardholder agreement or contract for the debt they are pursuing, copies of all documents they have on file pertaining to the alleged debt and authorization from the original creditor that they as a collection agency have the right to collect upon the alleged debt. Do not accept a copy of a statement as a validation of a debt, it is worthless. They will try and use this to shun you and satisfy the requirement but it does not. That is why you must specify in detail the documents (any and all) they have pertaining to the alleged debt. Yes, it's a pain but so are they and they are relentless. In some cases, if you do not challenge it, they may turn it over to an attorney within your state and attempt to file a judgment against you for the alleged debt. They can win if you do not fight it and having previous evidence that you have fought it is necessary if it does come to that point.

Know your rights as a consumer and act against those who violate them.

The following is directly from the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act:

§ 809. Validation of debts
15 USC 1692g
(a) Within five days after the initial communication with a
consumer in connection with the collection of any debt,
a debt collector shall, unless the following information is
contained in the initial communication or the consumer has
paid the debt, send the consumer a written notice contain-
ing—
(1) the amount of the debt;
(2) the name of the creditor to whom the debt is owed;
(3) a statement that unless the consumer, within thirty days
after receipt of the notice, disputes the validity of the
debt, or any portion thereof, the debt will be assumed
to be valid by the debt collector;
(4) a statement that if the consumer notifies the debt col-
lector in writing within the thirty-day period that the
debt, or any portion thereof, is disputed, the debt col-
lector will obtain verification of the debt or a copy of
a judgment against the consumer and a copy of such
verification or judgment will be mailed to the consumer
by the debt collector; and
(5) a statement that, upon the consumer’s written request
within the thirty-day period, the debt collector will
provide the consumer with the name and address of the
original creditor, if different from the current creditor.
(b) If the consumer notifies the debt collector in writing within
the thirty-day period described in subsection (a) that the
debt, or any portion thereof, is disputed, or that the con-
sumer requests the name and address of the original credi-
tor, the debt collector shall cease collection of the debt,
or any disputed portion thereof, until the debt collector
obtains verification of the debt or any copy of a judgment,
or the name and address of the original creditor, and a copy
of such verification or judgment, or name and address of
the original creditor, is mailed to the consumer by the debt
collector. Collection activities and communications that
do not otherwise violate this title may continue during
the 30-day period referred to in subsection (a) unless the
consumer has notified the debt collector in writing that the
debt, or any portion of the debt, is disputed or that the con-
sumer requests the name and address of the original credi-
tor. Any collection activities and communication during the
30-day period may not overshadow or be inconsistent with
the disclosure of the consumer’s right to dispute the debt or
request the name and address of the original creditor.
(c) The failure of a consumer to dispute the validity of a debt
under this section may not be construed by any court as an
admission of liability by the consumer.
(d) A communication in the form of a formal pleading in a
civil action shall not be treated as an initial communication
for purposes of subsection (a).
(e) The sending or delivery of any form or notice which
does not relate to the collection of a debt and is expressly
required by the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, title V of
Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, or any provision of Federal or
State law relating to notice of data security breach or priva-
cy, or any regulation prescribed under any such provision
of law, shall not be treated as an initial communication in
connection with debt collection for purposes of this sec-

Steven D Fredrickson is perpetrating a massive fraud with his RICO type company Portfolio Recovery Associates. This company in my opinion is similar in design and scale to the recent Madoff scandal in which Bernard Madoff is currently serving 150 years in prison. I feel Steven D Fredrickson's prison sentence, when it happens, should be longer.

Phone call from the mother of Steven D Fredrickson from Portfolio Recovery. She wanted to do "special things" to me for money - I told her I was married and besides, I don't engage in those acts anyway that she proposed. I also told her that she could find gainful employment in the porno industry doing what she described.

Steven D Fredrickson, you are a lucky man to have such a hard working mother as that...because she told me that she actually does you on a regular basis...and you are nice because she said that you always give her a big tip.

It's so sweet to see someone like you who loves making love to his mother - and I've heard you do the same to your son and daughter.

Message on answering machine said to call Anchor Receivables Management at 1-866-879-2116 about debt collections. Caller ID showed 757-321-6278.

Next day I called 321-6278, the automated system asked me to enter my telephone number. Terrance (floor manager)then picked up the call and asked me for my name and telephone #, which I gave. He said my wife owed on two accounts Wachovia and Bank of America. He listed four (4) amounts due, two (2) for each of the accounts.

I told him we do not have accounts with those organizations. I which Wachovia account, in wich state, was the account. Terrance said he could not provide any more information as I was not the account holder.

He could provide the amounts owed but not information about the account. RED FLAG #1

He said my wife would need to call and give him the last four (4) digits of her SSN. RED FLAG #2

We have never received a notice from either institution. Where is the paper trail?

They called and left a message on my machine saying to call them back!
The call was regarding an outstanding debt, which is definitely not mine.
I know that there is another person with my name in Eastern Massachusetts, but a different middle name.
A similar situation happened in the past and after much trouble I got them to stop calling me.
I think what these outfits (collection agencies) do is find anyone with the same names in the approximate locales and call them all until they find the right one, but in the meantime they inconvenience a lot of unconnected people!

My dad thought it was me, but the message didn't ask who it was trying to collect debt from, and I DONT EVEN HAVE CREDIT to start off with. DOH! Anyways, I called it because I want to know who they're looking for... but sounded kinda suspcious. Well "AL" I was given the same number 866-500-0609 and it was just the machine asking for my phone number and my last four number of S.S. UM, I just hung up! I'm not stupid. Anyways, "Bill" thanks for the site: www.adviceontime.com I'm going to go on there to see if I can get "Anchor R. I got a call from them last night after we went to bed. My daughter had just fallen asleep and thank god it didn't wake her up. So I answered the call and it was for my brother. I don't know how they got my number considering I live 3000 miles away from my brother and I don't even have the same last name as him anymore. To top it off our phone is under my husbands name not mine. So I'm trying to get ahold of them but no one is answering. I have two different numbers and the one number I have just rings and the other I'm on hold forever.

In looking for a debtor with a similar name as mine, their (Anchor's} autodialer added my phone from the phone book listings, even though my middle initial was different. They immediately removed my number from their autodialer and said I would not receive any more calls. I thanked them and hope that took care of the matter.
It is no fun to get collections calls, especially when it's not me they are looking for.

They have been calling here to for about a month and the ID states it was the Portfolio Recovery Associares without a number, and since they had started talking with a computer, I just hung up everytime. And one good thing about Vonage, is it shows their number on my bill! They called this morning and I answered and they had asked for my ex-husband! We've been divorced for 15 years and we havent any contact with each other. They stated he gave them my number. I told them they were telling a lie! They matched me being married to him and retreived my number is what I believe. Yes, I know how to contact him, but you think I am going to tell them! That is totally wrong of them just randomly calling people over and over, and not even use a human to start conversation!

I pulled myself out of debt last year. I know what is on my credit report at this time and I don't owe any money in error. This is the first time that a message has been left and they have been calling for the past 5 months (I cleared all debt last March). A female said: "This is Anchor Recievables Management. This call is being made to collect a debit. Please call 1-866-500-0609 at your earliest conveniance. Again, this is Anchor Recievables Managaement and any information given will be used to settle the debt in question. The number is 1-866-500-0609." So, I called. I got shunted to an automated system that did not pick up for more than five minutes. Then I decided to do a little research.

There are several numbers associated with this company and their website look legitimate. However, I can find no real way to contact a person either on the phone or through the website. I'm going to report this number and company to my phone provider as well as the Do Not Call registry. In Florida, fradulent debt collection is covered by law as well as the harassement of several calls per day.

And yet, these people are calling day and night for a Bank of America debt. That's funny since I've never had an account with Bank of America. Received a call stating they are attempting to collect a debt for Bank of America..coincidently, i did have an account with Bank of America but cancelled it several years ago. I was so upset, i went to my local Bank of America and they had no record of any outstanding debts. As instructed, I mailed them a dispute letter in June 2007, they claim the bank has 30 days to prove the claim. I have never heard from them since. I suspect they may have access to old bank account info (paid off loans, lines of credit, etc.) and try to collect false claims.

These people are criminals trying to solicit information from people saying they owe debts.

I put them on call block and it worked...sort of. That number stopped calling because they couldn't get through. Then the unavailable calls started with the same pattern. They call 7 days a week, usually once a day but on occassion, several times. They especially love Sundays just after 8 o'clock A.M. I just keep the ringer off and the caller I.D. on. All my relatives and friends call my cell anyway. If it weren't for my satellite t.v., I'd get the phone disconnected. I NEVER answer calls from people I don't know, especially toll free or unavailable ones. I used to tell them to stop and they would for about 30 days and then start up again...now I just let them waste their time and money. They were calling for someone who owned this house 2 owners back...about 10 years ago. He apparently ran up some bills and left the area. Presumably they ran the address through the internet and got my number. What a bunch of idiots.

Calls every day, leaves the same message but won't say who's calling - so obviously I'm not returning the call.

Calls 2-3 times per day for the past month. Is often abusive on the phone. Claims to be representing Bank of America for a bogus debt.

Calls 2-3 times per day for the past month. Is often abusive on the phone. Claims to be representing Bank of America. It is against Florida State Law (Fair Debt Collection Act) to call more than once per day if they reach some one.

trying to collect a bogus debt for wachovia bank. Young lady named TAWANA, very rude, immature, ignorant, and just allaround not very bright. You can tell working at a collection agency is the biggest things she has ever done so she thinks she is a big shot.

They keep calling for "Jamal". I've told them I know know any "Jamal" - they claim my number has been removed - and then they call right back. I'm on the national do not call list - can I get them fined?
