Mac users are not immune, no matter what anyone believes. Junk e-mails and junk phone calls can snake in exactly the same way as they can with PCs. Keep your firewalls in good shape!

I had the same thought about Alan's theory. I've had several kinds of POTS devices and modems sharing my lines since the pre-internet years, and I find that kind of hacker ambush extremely unlikely if not laughable. The stream of consciousness spray of comments is not helping his argument, either.

Alan, there is almost no way your computer was infected from an incoming phone call, unless your PC was set up to auto-answer, and even then, it is questionable how such a browser diversion could be made via a dial-up phone line. I strongly suspect your computer was infected via other means.

Just a few last words of thought. If you receive emails from someone you don't know do you answer them. So if you get a phone call from someone you don't know why would you answer it. My phone will ring all day. If they have the patients my caller id tells me who called when it is a name like this one. I go different means to stop them.

Correction in last message if the phone and computer are on the same line and also with an answering machine they can gain access to the computer and actually divert your browser. In the previous message I put can't instead of can gain access.

Also for more information did a search on the number and it is a mobile phone out of California FROM A TRAILER PARK . So that tells me a hacker trying to get into computers for identity theft.Phone is popular means for internet thieves because if on the same server they can't access it.

One thing people don't understand is these calls don't have to say anything or mean anything. What happens when people answer their phones on a line with the modem on the same line as the phone, is they can infect your computer and also divert your browser.
Reason I know is few years ago, caught one of the biggest internet thieves in the country. Since they knew I caught them they had to attack my computer and try to knock it out. They did knock it out by phone ringing at 3 in the morning. Caller id said someone in California. That did knock it out but back running and all information intact. But also at the same time received number of calls from another person. That number had 350 complaints to the do not call list. But that didn't matter because that one diverted the browser to there main server in the united Kingdom. So what they do is if they get an anwer they see if they can track and get into your computer. So best bet to all is don't answer calls you don't know. And another word to all above, if an answering machine is attached they can get in when the answering machine takes the call.

They added a "1" to the front of their number, this time...so, Verizon FIOS Digital voice can't block the number (Supposedly, anytime a telemarketer has a 1-xxx-xxx-xxxx" number, the FIOS software can't block it. Time to upgrade your software, Verizon! :(

These people have called me five times in the past two weeks mostly in the evenings (8:00-8:30pm). No one says hello if I answer and no message is left if I let it go to voice mail. I have called them back and again, the number does not appear to be in service according to the generic sounding pre-recorded message. How are these idiots getting away with this junk.

Well.. I read some of the entries here and after looking into whoeve TFZ LLC is it is quite clear that the poster under the name of "T" below is either a telemarketer/solicitor or a fan and supporter of scammers since the variety of things this outfit calls about range from mortgage help to funeral help. Clearly a SCAM caller! This means they DO NOT deserve our respect for just doing their jobs! They are pond scum and deserve to be treated no better than the dog crap you would use a stick to scrap off of your shoe soles... As far as most of us are concerned ALL solicitors and telemarketers are to be ignored and sent packing because 99% of them DO NOT CARE if your number is on the national do not call registry or your state's no not call registry. Oh! And they DO NOT have 30 days to remove you from their calling lists! They must remove you IMMEDIATELY if you tell them to remove you! There is NO grace period for this! READ THE UPDATED LAW T!!! You will also find that PRE-RECORDED robo messages are NO LONGER ALLOWED!!

They keep calling me over and over and they give you an option to get off their call list by pressing 1 but I've pressed it at least 5 times and they never take me off. One time I pressed 2 to talk to the rep and asked to be taken off the list but they just hung up on me...

I received a call from them today also. It was an autodialer recording telling me about President Obama just signing a $70B stimulus for people wanting to redo their mortgages. They said it wasn't a refi, but for people in danger of losing their homes due to predatory lending, ARMS about to reset, or being underwater. It said hit 1 to talk to someone & 2 to be removed from their list. I just hit #2 to be removed from their list. I am on the DNC registry as well, but there are many companies out there that do not apply when it comes to the DNC. You really need to do your due diligence & go to the FTC site & read about all the companies that are allowed to call you. Besides, it is nothing to just politely ask to be removed from their lists when they do call you. They have 31 days to comply, so you still might receive some calls. There is absolutely no need to be nasty. If you don't want to be disturbed, take your damn phone off the hook or unplug it. Excuses don't cut it. These are real people with real lives & real problems just like you & I. They are only doing a job, which by the way, they're lucky to have compared to the millions out of work. Have a heart & just be kind, or don't answer the phone.

Also, many of these calls coming through are from predictive dialer software. I used to work for a company that used several of these technologies. What many fail to understand is it's not like the good old days where we used to pick up a phone & dial. These dialers can misdial numbers, connect to your line after you've already said hello (& in many cases you might have said hello 2 or 3 times so you think no one is there), & the system can crash making you think they hung up on you which isn't the case at all. If you've ever had any of your programs or even your entire pc crash, then you know what I'm talking about. We have to lose the old mind sets & realize technology is taking over.

It was a robo-call for a mortgage restructuring offer. The recording blabbed on and on about federal restructuring, President Obama, your mortgage company blah, blah, blah. When it said press 1 to speak to a specialist or press 2 to be removed from the list, I pressed 1. A woman came on the line, identified herself as Jean and asked for my name. I asked her "What number did you dial to call me?" and she hung up.

We are on the Do Not Call List, for what it's worth. Not much, apparently.

Also comes through on caller ID as "Service Announc" or "service Message" 402-982-0779 & 206-397-1563. This is a telemarketing agency that is offering loan modifications. Likely got your name and number from some other financial institution that you do business with. So your bank or your credit card company is somehow "affiliated" with this company. In layman's terms that means....they sold your info to someone else and they can get away with it because they are a financial institution that you have done business with. So the Do Not Call list does not apply to them. This company tries to misrepresent itself as having something to do with the government.
That in combination with Real Estate in California at least violates several laws.

Called us four times within 6 days. one call got thru to answering machine, it was a robocall 'survey' for two state senate candidates. The election is in Nov. 2010, ten months away! I called the number, some guy answered and said this was an inbound call center only. He said no one makes outbound calls. I said. "well someone is spoofing your number on caller id." He said, "many businesses use the same telephone number." What crap!

This number is one of many assigned to a Boiler Room operation that conducts surveys. It is an automated message that requests you to press a number to register your opinion. Mostly, they ask political leanings or actually mention specific candidates in your area - BUT, they also have other surveys. Simply answering the phone to find out who it could be is not a problem. THE PROBLEM occurs IF you participate in their survey. Once they get you to respond, they'll keep calling again and again and again. Best practice is to hang up without participating in their poll.

This number called just as the clock turned from 8:59 to 9:00pm. I have a hurt neck and the phone startled me, making me jerk my neck and at the same time knock over a glass of grape juice on my carpet. They also interrupted the Simpsons I was watching. They hung up on my answering machine. So I reported them to the No Call place. Bunch of worthless bums. I don't care what you are selling, I don't have a mortgage and I am not a senior!
