I just called - was asked for my card number. When I said I did not have it, the person asked me for my social security number. I responded saying that I was treating this call as a scam and that if AMEX had something to say to me to put it in writing and send it to me via the mail.

Called my work line. Automated voice indicated that it was American Express and not the sales line and that this is about an important matter. I don't have an AMEX card, and neither does our business.

Receiving calls for a person that I know the name at my phone number. The person does not live at this number and never has. I do not have an American Express card. I called the number after trying to tell the machine that I do not have a card. Finally got a person with an accent who wanted my SSN when I said I did not have a card. She wanted the number because she had a blank screen and she could get this cleared up. I told them no because I do not have a card and asked that I my phone number be removed. Do not know what happened but have not received any calls for 2 days.

Have been receiving calls over the past two weeks. I called the number on the back of the card and was advised that my account is in good standing, however, I I quoted if the 800-592-1160 is legit and the rep confirmed that it is their credit department t. I was transferred to 3 different people and no one could give me a reason as to why i am receiving these calls.

Caller left message: “To discuss an important matter. Please return our call at 1800-592-1160. We will be available Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. Until midnight Saturday 8 a.m. Until 6:30 p.m. And on Sunday 10 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. Eastern time. Thank you.” I do not have an AmEx credit card.

Call said that it was American Express, and that they wanted to discuss an important matter with me. This was not the telesales department. They gave calling hours, but they were not 24 hours a day, so it sounded suspicious, and since I had used the card an hour after I received the message on my voicemail, I thought it was a scam. I called the number on the back of my card instead, and the rep listened to the message, said there was no hold or suspicious activity on the card, and no problems wiht it.

I called the 800-592-1160 number just to see what it is, and it is well set up. It really sounds like you're calling American Express. They ask you to key in the last 4 of your SS#, and then to key in all 15? digits on your card number. If you don't have them, they'll connect you to a live agent - there are other ways this can be handled. The agent, even the American Express jingle when you call sounds legitimate, but it's not. BEWARE.

Have been receiving calls from this number and others for weeks multiple times a day. Caller id says "American Express" or "Midvale, UT" This is the message they leave every time--- "This is not the telemarketing sales call. We are calling you to discuss an important matter. Please return our call at 1-800-592-1160 and 888-819-2135. We will be available Monday through Friday from 7am or 8am until Midnight, Saturday from 8am until 6:30pm and Sunday from 10am until 8:30pm Eastern Time." (the two different call back numbers and times are from 2 different messages)- I have gotten calls from this number and the following all claiming to be "American Express" 801-945-9060, 801-945-9236, 801-945-9052, 801-945-9062, 623-492-8976, 623-492-8037,866-884-0976, 888-819-2135

Clearly a well setup scam. They have a transfer call set up that uses robo programs to forward. They won’t verify who they are and the representative could not get a supervisor on the line either. They claim this is not a scam line but they have zero identifiers other than name dropping. Do not give any information to this group, they are targeting seniors, homeowners and anyone who is naive enough to share information they can use to defraud someone of their identity.

Its a scam. Told the guy to go away when he called and then I got an automated call from 'American Express" and to enter the last four of my SS number. Hung up. If you get the same and give up your information then you're the golden goose they're after.

Caller asked for me by name. I didn't acknowledge and asked what he wanted. He said he was calling for "confirmation" and wanted to speak to the person with my name. I said not a chance and hung up since these people have calling to record affirmative responses that they record from you and use it later to fraudulently obtain credit.

Have received numerous calls from this phone # over the last two weeks. Caller ID says either "Unavailable" with the phone # 800-592-1160 or "American Express" with phone # 801-945-9062. Recorded voice is the same with the same message, if I don't say anything, call disconnects. Finally left a message one day to call back on at 800-592-1160. After I said to the pre-recorded choice system that I did not have a AmEx card, a woman came on and immediately asked for my ss# so she could verify my information. I said I wanted to verify I was really talking to American Express, she immediately hung up. Jan 2018

I received the same call again today. Amex confirmed it is a phishing attempt but said they can't do anything about it. That seems crazy that a corporation as large as American Express doesn't have the ability to shut this operation down....

This is a HIGH LEVEL SCAM! It is FRAUD...please read!!! American Express is confused, and doesn't know how to handle this fraudulent set up. I've spoken the Amex cust. service 5 times (the # on the back of the card) about this issue. Amex will tell you that 800-592-1160 is a real Amex #, part of their Credit Services Dept. What Amex doesn't understand, and they can't seem to confirm, is that 800-592-1160 has been stolen from them. Scammers are using it for caller ID, and are calling people using the number. When you call 800-592-1160 back, it sounds just like the real Amex, but it isn't. They are just trying to get your cc or ssn # and personal info. I spoke with Amex Credit Services Dept. and confirmed my account is in good standing. Credit Services has no record of ever calling me, and did not even have my phone # on record. However I have rec'd 17 calls from 800-592-1160, all saying they are Amex. They have asked for relatives who have died, and ones that don't live with me, etc. I've reported the problem to Amex upper mgmt, but they seem unwilling to no follow-up or repsonse from Amex. We are on our own to deal with these scammers. Whenever 800-592-1160 calls me now, I use an air horn on them...and hopefully it is destroying their ear drums.

Most collection agencies operate on a contingency basis, which means that they do not get paid by their client unless and until they collect from the consumer. If and when the agency receives monies from a consumer, the agency then gives their client a pre-determined percentage of the monies recovered. The remainder belongs to the agency.

Oftentimes, debt collection agencies buy these debts for just pennies on the dollar. The debt collector is free to seek as much money from the consumer as they can regardless of what they paid to buy the debt. This amounts to large profit margins for them.

Typically, employees of debt collection agencies are motivated with performance-based bonuses determined by the amount of money they are able to collect from a consumer.

Regardless of what specific methods a debt collection agency uses in their attempts to collect a debt, it is clear that the agency is in the business of making money first and foremost. And that money comes from you – the consumer. Hopefully, you now have a better understanding as to why collection agencies use such aggressive behavior in their interaction with consumers.

Consumers around the globe have long complained about the unfair and often unethical tactics used by debt collection agencies and thus, the FDCPA - a federal law meant for the protection of consumers. It encompasses a set of rules governing the activities of collection agencies.

Someone claiming to be from AMEX called our office asking for the owner, who has the account. When told he wasn't in, he said that my name was on the card and I would be liable for the past due amount owed. Funny thing is, I am not listed on the card! They call us several times a day, each time trying to "bully" someone into giving them info. Do not do this! If you think you owe AMEX, then call the number on the back of your card.

Yes, confirmed today 12/1/2009 that 800-592-1160, 866-231-9049 and 623-492-6031 are all American Express numbers -- genuine. Some are unlisted numbers but they are all part of AmEx. It's not totally clear why they have hidden numbers or why they are calling people asking for SS# and card numbers. AmEx clearly states on their web site that they never call and ask for your full numbers -- but that is exactly what they are doing. I just spent several hours with them on the phone today talking to their fraud department, because at first I suspected this was a scammer. But these are all originating from AmEx. Even more bizarre is that the fraud dept kept asking for my SS# also (even though I don't even have an account with them). Obviously I didnt' give it (never give this out). They call me from this number all day and night.

The bad news is that they seem to be robocalling everyone in the U.S. -- maybe trying to sign them up for AmEx (motivation not clear). Very annoying because they keep calling even though I'm on the do not call list and have asked repeatedly not to be called. They call on average every few hours for the past few weeks.

The good news is that you can easily sue them for $500 per call. I'm doing this right now, and will post my results when done -- but others have done this successfully. It's very easy and cheap to do. In NY, just stop by the courthouse, fill out a very simple 1 page form, and pay $20. Since they called me 7 times in the past 48 hours, I'm suing for $3500 + the $20 court fee.

Robo-calls to a home phone number is illegal (except for charities and political campaigns). So if AmEx called you and you didn't ask them to -- you're entitled to $500 per call. It's an easy way to make money and also tell Amex not to bother you again. When you fill out your small claims paperwork -- just mention they are violating the Federal Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) -- which clearly states that automated calls are illegal. If you are on the Do Not Call registry, or have asked them to stop calling you in the past, you may even be entitled to more money.

This only takes a few minutes, and is easy to do -- so please give it a try. If Amex has annoyed you with their repeated robo-calls, this is a great way to get some justice -- and some extra money. Best of luck!

This is fraudulent. They keep calling me everyday during the last couple of months and leave messages like it's regarding urgent matter. There are several numbers. Sometimes it's American Express and the other times Bank of America from the same number! Do not answer the calls or do not call back the number they leave. The first time, I called back, entered my Amex card number following to their menu voices, and found my current balance on their system was wrong, then realized the phone numbers are not the legitimate numbers after searching on the Web and found a lot of peole talking about their phone numbers. Be aware.

Do not give your account information to any of these numbers if asked to do so. INSTEAD, contact American Express via secure email on their website (if you monitor your account online) or call the number listed on the back of your card.

I verified with American Express via secure online email (via my online account) that these numbers are not theirs and that my account has no problems. The representative cautioned me NOT to give any information to anyone associated with those numbers.

Furthermore, googling those 3 numbers lead to dead ends (but plenty of companies willing to reverse lookup the numbers for a fee). However, googling the number on the back of my card lists multiple references to American Express. If those 3 numbers were truly American Express, they should be listed as readily as the number on the back of my card when I google them.

I will be passing on this information to my state Attorney General for any action or reference they may wish to take.

Unfortunately, I had to join a debt settlement program and that is when I started to receive the calls... SO... it's definitely not a good call unless you did have a mixup like the gentlemen listed below.

I got one of these too. Apparently it really is American Express. Since I'm paranoid, I called the cust. svc. number on my card rather than the one in the message. Apparently some sort of billing or mail problem with my account, all cleared up now. But I really did need to call AmEx.

Same message, that is was not a sales call. That it was important. Caller ID said 602-537-9012 AND 623-492-6031. Strange

The caller said it was American Express. She left a polite message for me to call her back.

Called American Express Customer Service. They verified that the number 1-800-592-1160 is indeed on of the numbers used by their collections department. I have never had a card, but the person at that number indicated that it does "occasionally" call wrong numbers.

I have been receiving calls from these numbers, called back on 1-800-592-1160. Definitely AMEx collections. Asked for my account number and told them I have not had an account since 1993!!!!!
Told them to take me off their d**n list!
