They left a message that indicated that they are Blue Cross which handles health insurance for state employees in Georgia. They are trying to push a wellness program. Their wellness counselors insisted I walk to improve my health when I had fallen and badly injured both of my knees. Walking was not an option. The woman wanted to argue with me so I hung up and no longer answer numbers in the 800 category.

Call came from 800-405-1806, caller ID showed: "Blue Cross Blue". The message stated: "Please return this important call to 866-670-1467" and "If you do not want any more calls, please call 866-670-1467 to be removed from the list".

THIS IS AN OBVIOUS TELEMARKETING CALL. Apparently it is from some "add on" company and not the real Blue Cross Blue Shield trying to sell additional insurance. DO NOT CALL THEM BACK -- calls to toll free numbers can not block your caller id and you will just be giving them your name -- and NEVER PROVIDE ANY INFORMATION TO CALLERS. If it's legitimate YOU call the company at a number YOU know is valid.

I returned the call, nothing to lose by trying. It was anything but a scam. I am scheduled for an MRI. Pre-Certification is needed. Blue Cross just wanted me to know that they did approve this procedure and they gave me the certification number.
She also told me if I ever needed help with a future procedure I could call to see what might be done. I am quite relieved
I called.

Call came early evening, after most business offices close. Rang and rang. We do not answer calls without
caller's name or business showing on caller ID. IF this is BLUE Cross, we are not interested in discussing health issues on the phone NOR do we want a visit from a nurse (supposedly free--read paid by Medicare $). We like our Medicare Advantage w/Anthem BC, but we have our own doctors for medical advice and "education". BLUE CROSS--get a clue.
(Stern letter to follow) We note the many comments here that this kind of call is a scam. Be aware.

I know my Federal Plan Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield has a Wellness program, but this phone number called me several times with no identification on Caller ID. A message said, "Please hold for important information," or something like that, still without identifying themselves. Then I waited...and waited...and waited. If this really is a legit caller from my insurance, I wish they'd quite raising my blood pressure!

This is an actual service of Anthem called Complex Care. If you have a condition a nurse will be on call to assist you in anyway. I am a chronic pain sufferer. This program has helped me get the additional help I needed along with my primary doctors care. This is NOT a Scam!

This is a total fraud. I am actually an insurance agent for Anthem BCBS in Kentucky. I had one of these generic messages on my office answering machine (came in around 8:00 PM). I figured, why not see what the scam is. They ask my name, I gave it. Then they wanted my phone number "to call back in case we get disconnected." I gave them my fax number -- I do hope they call back. :-)

The lady with a heavy Brooklyn accent insisted that it was all legit. She said it was a "free" service; to which I asked why they do all that for free, seems like someone has to pay salaries and for phone systems, etc. She then said that it is part of my insurance premium (so thus I actually do pay for it). Now, we don't have many Brooklyn accented folks here in Kentucky. She claimed she was working for Wellpoint (the conglomerate that owns several health insurors, including Anthem). I guess claiming Wellpoint is a good statistical ploy in this part or the country, as they own a bunch of companies and Anthem is by far the #1 insuror in Kentucky. Anyway, she wanted my date of birth. I resisted, and she said she couldn't look me up without it. What seems odd is that if it was a legit call from Anthem, my policy number would have been all they needed, but she didn't want that, just personal info about me. Most people don't realize it, but with your name and your date of birth, your identity is an easy steal. Actually, the birthdate is more valuable overall than a SS#.

I then said she was just another telemarketer. She got all indignant, saying she never called anyone. I retorted, "of course not, you use the robo callers to generate calls coming in to your place; it's all part of the scam." Then she finally told me that she can give medical information w/o knowing my date of birth. In other words, she was just shifting off my "no" answer to try to get at least some info about me (she had a name and phone number to put the new info with, but then, that's in the phone book).

She was obviously miffed that I refused to give any private info out. She said they "help" with major health problems, like some nurse on the phone is going to fix me if I needed a tumor cut out. I explained that "nothing was going on," so I couldn't understand why they were calling, which was the trigger to claim that my employer requested it. Busted again. I'm an independent agent, and have no employer as such (I run my own business). I have an individual policy.

Over an over again she claimed that HIPAA wouldn't allow the telephone message thing to state who the call was from. I guess if they actually had access to my file, they would know that I listed my cell number as the contact number for matter related to my personal coverage. Instead, the doofusses called my office well after closing time because they simply purchased a list somewhere. I gotta give the devil credit where it's due, the lady remained calm yet diligently continued to try to pry information out of me.

Oh, here's a great method of handling a scummy telemarketer that want's to send a salesman to your home. Tell them that would be fine, and then ask, "Do you have my new address? I just moved." They will say "no, I don’t' have that new address." Have handy the street address for the local cemetery, and give that to them. Then give them a plot # as your condo unit number, and explain that the unit had just been opened up, and you were lucky to get in there before the opportunity closed back up. Too bad you can't be there to see the look on the salesman's face. But I figure if they scumbags are willing to do high pressure sales, why not help them waste part of their day like they seem so willing to do for you.

The caller from this number swears, even after repeated questions and expressed doubts, that they are indeed your insurance company. The medical plan they called us about is not part of an employer benefit package, it is an Anthem/BCBS plan secondary to Medicare. The caller aks for a date of birth and a complete background on all chronic illnesses. They lack information and fish for the mecial information to circumvent HIPAA laws. Also, the number is blocked on the caller ID and is only attainable via *69. Unlike any actual insurance company representative, but much like telemarketers, they will not take no for an answer and call on weekends. I wonder if they falsely enroll people in the program against the customer's consent, as they transfer you to another party just like the telecommunications sales people do. They claim to offer a service, but it is not anything that your doctor does not already do. The customer gets referred to an Anthem phone number which is specifically stated by Anthem as a "utillization review" program. This means that the insurance company monitors your meidcal situation and in the event of any serious or extended meidcal treatment, the insurance gets in the middle and arranges your health care according to their interest in cost containment and minimizing the cost to them for Medical services.

My husband and I have Anthem BCBS and I have received several of these calls before. The one I got today, however, showed "Unknown Caller" in the ID window. I don't know if that was the case for the other calls. It seems strange that a legit call from BCBS wouldn't reveal that Caller ID.

As to the "How do I stop them from calling?" advice below, I don't think the "Do Not Call" Registry covers calls from companies you actually have an account with, or organizations to which you've made contributions. When I get some money ahead, I really want to buy one of those phones that lets you block certain numbers. I am absolutely plagued by robocalls.

Report these people to your state attorney general's office. I have. They can't say they are "from Anthem/BCBS" if they are not. That's fraud. This definitely is a scam, even if it is for a service that Anthem allegedly covers.

Also, if they indeed are from Anthem, why did the person who answered my return call say he couldn't identify me from my Group/ID agreement numbers. That's what every Anthem representative (and automated voice mail) asks for first. He insisted that I provide sensitive personal information, stuff that could be used in identity theft. I refused.

Furthermore, HIPAA prevents Anthem from providing your personal health information to third parties. So if Anthem is facilitating these people, it is liable for legal action. Maybe we should launch a class-action suit.

I work for bcbs and this is a valid "benefit"... what it is, is just someone that you can call if you do have any health conditions such as a kid with adhd or anything like that... if you have questions and don't want to call your doctor about it they can help.. they are nurses and there is no charge for the service... also they don't use the info given to up your premiums or things like that.. I also have bcbs insurance and it has helped with my child who does have adhd... they are not trying to sell anything just trying to give you more fro the money you already spend on insurance.

They said it was Anthem Blue Cross calling to make me aware of my Wellness management program benefit through the insurance my employer was paying for. I got suspicious when the women asked for my age – which they should already known. I said that I was paying for my own insurance through COBRA, not my employer, and they should know that. I told the women I was fully aware of the Wellness Coach benefit and had direct access to it through the customer website. Also that I do not have any of the conditions that required a Wellness Coach. I said she should have already known that from the medical information I already submitted and my medical claims. Then I told her that I had worked for BCBS for 32 years (that’s true) and was not aware of the company ever contacting members in this way; because under the federal HIPPA law they could not discuss personal medical information by this method. And that she should know that because everyone who works for BCBS is required to take annual HIPPA training and certification testing. After that the women abruptly ended the call. I think it is a scam to get member id numbers in order to file fake Medicare claims.

A lady left a message, she was a "Patient Educator Coordinator" for Richmond Medicaid, looking for another lady. She left a 1-800 number which I called, since this seemed health-related. I finally maneuvered through a voice menu & got a live person, everything seems legit, and this lady I'd reached said my number would be taken off their records, asked if I knew the person the Coordinator was trying to call, and so on. _Seems_ legit but who knows. I guess the call came through via some sort of dialing service or something then? I dunno. Or maybe the Coordinator just left her office number.
