Caller ID is the best investment. I have no interest in answering calls listed "UNAVAILABLE" and from numbers I don't recognize. Only CREEPS use this tactic to harass people.

Call your local phone company to see if they have a service called "Call Intercept".. there is a monthly charge to have this service. With "Call Intercept", you can block any number in the United States. I have "Call Intercept" on my home phone thru Verizon and I am able to block 25 numbers. The person calling your number will get a recording saying "THE PERSON YOU ARE CALLING DOES NOT ACCEPT CALLS FROM THIS NUMBER, GOOD BYE." It's GREAT blocking Portfolio Recovery Associates from calling all day from different numbers. I am hoping that Verizon will extend call count from 25 to 50 numbers.

Called but no message. Portfolio Recovery has been calling me for months based on a debt my ex-wife ran up. I have tried to push them to go to court but they refuse. The last time they did so, on a differnt Credit Card, I responded as required by law and they didn't pursue it because they know they will lose. Seems they add a new number every few months. With modern technology, I am able to forward all their numbers direct to Voice Mail (never rings), so they don't even bother leaving messages anymore. Here are all the number I have collected:

Got a call Sunday afternoon, 1:35. Isn't it against the law to call on a Sunday? Hung up before I could get to the phone. It's Valentine's Day, fer chrissakes, and these zombies are calling. My credit is clear, but there's some piece of trash in my area with my first initial and last name (but different middle initial, if the morons would ever pay attention) who has had collectors after her for years for all the debts she keeps racking up, then defaults on. Companies can't find her, so they harass me.

Any collection agency that violates the FDCPA may be sued. Consumers can find more information at http://www.ftc.gov/os/statutes/fdcpajump.shtm

There is much controversy over statute of limitations in all states. Even within the states, judges don't agree on the dates which really does a lot for the whole situation.

Most of the time, if you approach these bozos with a formal letter sent certified mail, return receipt requested and tell them to cease communications until they fully validate the debt, they will sell it to another bozo collector who will proceed to attempt to collect on it. When I say fully validate the debt, I mean specifically state in your letter for them to provide documents proving you actually signed a cardholder agreement or contract for the debt they are pursuing, copies of all documents they have on file pertaining to the alleged debt and authorization from the original creditor that they as a collection agency have the right to collect upon the alleged debt. Do not accept a copy of a statement as a validation of a debt, it is worthless. They will try and use this to shun you and satisfy the requirement but it does not. That is why you must specify in detail the documents (any and all) they have pertaining to the alleged debt. Yes, it's a pain but so are they and they are relentless. In some cases, if you do not challenge it, they may turn it over to an attorney within your state and attempt to file a judgment against you for the alleged debt. They can win if you do not fight it and having previous evidence that you have fought it is necessary if it does come to that point.

Know your rights as a consumer and act against those who violate them.

The following is directly from the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act:

§ 809. Validation of debts
15 USC 1692g
(a) Within five days after the initial communication with a
consumer in connection with the collection of any debt,
a debt collector shall, unless the following information is
contained in the initial communication or the consumer has
paid the debt, send the consumer a written notice contain-
ing—
(1) the amount of the debt;
(2) the name of the creditor to whom the debt is owed;
(3) a statement that unless the consumer, within thirty days
after receipt of the notice, disputes the validity of the
debt, or any portion thereof, the debt will be assumed
to be valid by the debt collector;
(4) a statement that if the consumer notifies the debt col-
lector in writing within the thirty-day period that the
debt, or any portion thereof, is disputed, the debt col-
lector will obtain verification of the debt or a copy of
a judgment against the consumer and a copy of such
verification or judgment will be mailed to the consumer
by the debt collector; and
(5) a statement that, upon the consumer’s written request
within the thirty-day period, the debt collector will
provide the consumer with the name and address of the
original creditor, if different from the current creditor.
(b) If the consumer notifies the debt collector in writing within
the thirty-day period described in subsection (a) that the
debt, or any portion thereof, is disputed, or that the con-
sumer requests the name and address of the original credi-
tor, the debt collector shall cease collection of the debt,
or any disputed portion thereof, until the debt collector
obtains verification of the debt or any copy of a judgment,
or the name and address of the original creditor, and a copy
of such verification or judgment, or name and address of
the original creditor, is mailed to the consumer by the debt
collector. Collection activities and communications that
do not otherwise violate this title may continue during
the 30-day period referred to in subsection (a) unless the
consumer has notified the debt collector in writing that the
debt, or any portion of the debt, is disputed or that the con-
sumer requests the name and address of the original credi-
tor. Any collection activities and communication during the
30-day period may not overshadow or be inconsistent with
the disclosure of the consumer’s right to dispute the debt or
request the name and address of the original creditor.
(c) The failure of a consumer to dispute the validity of a debt
under this section may not be construed by any court as an
admission of liability by the consumer.
(d) A communication in the form of a formal pleading in a
civil action shall not be treated as an initial communication
for purposes of subsection (a).
(e) The sending or delivery of any form or notice which
does not relate to the collection of a debt and is expressly
required by the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, title V of
Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, or any provision of Federal or
State law relating to notice of data security breach or priva-
cy, or any regulation prescribed under any such provision
of law, shall not be treated as an initial communication in
connection with debt collection for purposes of this sec-
tion.

The phone number 757-961-3547 is a collection agency named Portfolio Recovery Services. They seem to specialize in outdated accounts that no longer show on your reports and will suddenly call over and over about old old debts. They seem to be listed as a legitimate collection agency but use verbally abusive methods and make insulting comments in their collection attempts.

Oh... my... goodness....

It was on Monday. My younger cousin and I (who is 17, btw, and since she's not really from America, she is not familiar with debt collectors at all.. and she is learning more and more about her family as she stays here longer) was expecting a phone call from our aunt who was coming in from out of state. The home phone rang and all she saw was the area code starting in 7. So she picks up the phone and immediately greets with a "Hi, auntie! Are you in town yet? We can't wait to see you!" This lady (and I use the term loosely) gets on the phone and says "May I speak with ______ (I forgot the name)?"

She answered "Who are you? Are you family??!!"

The lady said "I am calling about a business matter."

My cousin answered "Well then you must be family because only family handle our business! What side of the family are you on??!!"

That's... when everything went downhill from there. The lady **screamed** at my poor cousin by saying "Did you not hear what I just said? I AM NOT FAMILY! THIS IS A PERSONAL BUSINESS MATTER! SO IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHO SHE IS, LET ME KNOW SO I CAN HANG UP!!"

By the time my cousin gave me the phone, she was in tears. Like I said, she hasn't had this kind of experience before, not in the country she's from. And I must say... it was a good thing that operator/collections agent hung up, lest she would have gotten an earful from me!

But because I am who I am, always standing up for my family, I did my research. It took me a while, but I found this site (http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-757-961-3547) and finally found the jerks responsible for this phone call. So I did what came naturally: called and did a customer service complaint. No one talks to my little cousin that way... ever.

Apparently, customer service is not a priority for them. Every single agent I have called in that company were just careless and non-chalant about the purpose of my call. To top it off, they sound like they are from the streets, if you get my drift. I'm not putting that down, as I was from the streets myself, but when you are at work, and you're working for any kind of corporation, collections being one of them (even though I think they are the lowest level scum of the earth), there is a particular tone of voice that you need to display when you're on the phone with a client. In other words, you have to have a professional voice. The way I was treated and the tone of their voices (especially a "Ms. Woods." I'm sorry, but I think either she was chewing gum or eating when she was on the phone with me!) just totally turned me off.

So yes... I agree with everyone on here that say that these people are just flat out scumbags. However, I do see potential in this company, **IF** they play their cards right and play nice. There is nothing wrong with trying to collect a debt that is owed, but there is a right way and a wrong way. These people did it the wrong way. Period.

P.S. - I called around 9:30 their time, and they have the nerve to tell me no supervisor is available. Typical call center lies... there's always one on duty, but they are not willing to transfer the calls, I guess because it gives them demerits... but that's just a guess.. But still... as my in-laws would say, what a bunch of schmucks!

They have been constantly calling both my cell and also my residence number. I finally answered the home number and they asked for a person by name and there's noone here by that name. in response to Kristian, You have no idea what you are talking about. They can only report a debt for seven years after last activity on the account. Most states have a statue of limitations for debt. If a debt is past this sol they can sue you for it but you can plead it is past statue and get it thrown out. These creeps buy old out of statue debts for pennies on the dollar and try to collect on them.If you pay a debt out of statue it will make it show up on your credit report for seven years from the time you pay it.To find out about fdcpa google Bud Hibbs. I started getting hundreds of calls on the cell phone for a woman who was apparently being sought by collection agencies. Imagine my surprise when that cell number was tracked to my home phone number, now I'm getrting the god-damned calls on my home phone! I'll be contacting the do not call registry about this for sure! I have no clue who these people are or what they think they are doing but after the 30th call from these morons I finally got some girl on the other end who claimed to know more about my finances than I did (She didn't, not even close). She swore I owed the phone company $276 (Obviously I don't otherwise I wouldn't be online right now with my DSL connection from my own computer). I Was nice an cordial to her, even though she was trying to be a bullying bitch. I simply stated that the Fair Trade Act prohibits this kind of behavior and that I was not only going to contact the BBB but also have an attorney file charges for harassment as well as will violation of the Fair Trade Act. She hung up and I haven't heard from the since.

Actually guys, they can call you for past debts. Your past debts stay on your credit report for 7 years if the debt has been PAID. If the debt is still past due the debt can be listed on your credit report for 21 years. Easy way to get people off your back...pay your bills. I had a $50.00 water bill that I never knew about...collections got a hold of me...paid the bill and everything stopped.

They keep calling me to collect on a supposed debt from over 10 years ago. When I press them for details, they cannot provide anything. Per Fair Credit Reporting Act, you can request (and they are obligated) to provide proof backing up their claim, and it has to be detailed. Plus, after 7 years, they can do nothing to your credit report anyways.
