Find out about their illegal harassment, trying to collect old SOL - STATUTE OF LIMITATION expired debts from clueless people!

Google: "portfolio recovery scam".

Report them to the Federal Trade Commission and your State Attorney General - and block their calls:

Google: "phone call blockers" - they can be purchased for little money at eBay

Some call blockers:
• Uniden DECT1288 blocks up to 20 numbers, plus Private and Unknown, with the reject tone, without ringing the phone.
• Panasonic KX-TG106 blocks up to 30 numbers, plus all unidentified callers, with a busy tone, after the phone rings once.
• JF Teck Caller ID with Ring Controller blocks up to 70 numbers, and can be set to always allow up to 100 to ring through.

By the way, if you want to set up your phone to forward their calls to the Federal Trade Commission, here's the number to use:
1-877-382-4357

These pests buy very old junk debts for pennies on the dollar with expired statue of limitation, than use illegal harassment tactics trying to intimidate uninformed individuals to pay money for this junk debt, which is noncollectable since the statue of limitations has long expired. Never ever agree to pay ANYTHING to these law breaking rats, since by doing so you would void your statue of limitation protection. Google: \"Portfolio Recovery Associates Scam\" to find out more about their lawless behavior, send a letter requesting validation of debt [Google how to do so] and report them to your Attorney General, the FTC. They have many law suits pending against them. Don\'t fall for their scam - block their calls, or send a \"cease and desist\" letter [Google] or simply ignore them, or answer and sing a song or whatever. Fight these slimy roaches!! Good luck!

FYI: Portfolio Recovery Associates, Inc., 120 Corporate Boulevard, Norfolk, Virginia 23502, USA. 757-519-9300.

They have 41 phone numbers listed to their company to get around blocked numbers.

How the BBB works. The BBB will not take action against a company unless their are substantial amounts of legitimate complaints that can be prosecutable or the company has committed a felony. The number of reports against a company do contribute to the BBB rating of that company, which can hurt that company when trying to obtain clients. I have filed complaints with the BBB before, and they do in fact take the reports seriously. The last time I filed a report my credit card number was stolen by an employee of a company I purchased scrubs from. When the company refused to investigate who stole my credit card number, I filed a report with the BBB and got a response within 2 days. Within a week I received a call from the company and the BBB letting me know the offenders were caught and prosecuted.

In short, always file a complaint with the BBB if the company is breaking the law. You will be helping us all in the long run.

I can't believe how many complaints have been posted. I'm glad there is a forum like this, so concerned people can inform each other about a company like this one. Thank You

First I don't know who these people are and if as I have read, they are an old debt buyer, trying to collect old written off debt...Its SAD...How can a person do that day in and day out, trying to make a profit on someone elses misfortune. There is NO WAY I could do that for a living, be a Debt Collector or A Lawyer. Preying on another persons situation. They can't go out and make a real living, something constructive, like helping people in need and there are a lot of families who need help, just putting food on the table. They are like a HYENA feeding off the remains in the animal work. I read a post here about a person being an ex-employee of this company and how he or she quit because of the abuse they were receiving from the people they were calling, but the one thing I "didn't hear" was that they felt guilty in their job choice, preying on their victim. Its ok, GOD will have the final say, putting money first before GOD's children....A SAD KIND OF PERSON/COMPANY AT BEST, VERY SAD!

These people will not stop calling me, always with a different number. They only give their fist name and will not identify what company they work for even when asked. When they call they keep asking to speak with my husband and will not tell me anything except their first name. This last time they tried to get my personal information, which I refused to give. They are trying to collect a dept from my husband on an account that was closed 11 years ago.

If these people are harassing you past the 15 year collection limitation, file a complaint with the better business bureau:

Phrases like "important personal business" and "important business matter" can nearly always be parsed as "collection account". By law a collector must make "meaningful disclosure" of its identity yet respect the privacy of whoever is named on a debt account. Collectors can be sued for talking too much to the wrong person. Of course, an air of mystery is helpful when trying to sound scary.

futbolmama: I'm a little confused about your story as written, but I think you will find the BBB is nearly toothless and the credit bureaus are not really interested in helping you correct your own records. Filing complaints with the FTC and the attorney general of the collector's home will not grant personal relief but may at least pile on the warnings to others. Still, you should exhaust all polite forms of complaint and resistance just to show you did before resorting to legal action, which may be warranted if PRA is violating a C&D letter and trying to re-age old debt.

Asked what the exact debt was, they couldn't tell me. Multiple calls from all different numbers everyday after 8pm from three too four different numbers. Have asked for itemized list of my so called debt, never came. Have submitted to our BBB and credit trakers (eqifax etc) proof of all debt payments and included paid off letters. Still they call they have even tried to resubmit the debt, after they failed to report it paid before another company bought it (idiots). They are rude nor can they even speak proper english. They've even gone as low as calling my parents home, 1 of 2 numbers I've ever had I haven't lived there in 20 years. I wish they would just leave me alone. Letters to cease and desist don't work!

Lisa and catsdad: I would look at the Statute of Limitations on debt in your respective states to see if PRA has any leg to stand on. Also pull your credit report(s) for any trade lines, perhaps artificially created, trying to reset the account age.

Kat: Portfolio Recovery Associates is AKA "Anchor Receivables Management" and less commonly known as "Revenue Discovery Systems". The more your rep sours the more you need to rebrand. Calling twice a day from rotating numbers is hardly the worst they could do and perfectly legal. If you are not the party they seek, one cease-comm letter sent USPS Certified should quiet them for good.

Sms: The comments from the "anonymous" ex-employee I thought were quite reasonable and informative, especially compared to the usual ax-grinding industry apologists who like to light cherry bombs in these forums and dismiss harried consumers as "deadbeats". True, the entry is a train wreck of chat-speak and poor formatting, but essentially correct.

We can argue over one detail, over whether expired debt is functionally "owed" by anyone, given that the original creditor has likely recovered its loss soon after charge-off. But an account past SOL can legally be pursued so long as the court system is not involved. I don't think “Anonymous” implied this is just, only how the law is expressed. This is one loophole among many the FTC and the National Consumer Law Center would like closed, according to statements issued this summer.

I don't doubt there are honest people working for the collectors with the worst reputations. Surely not all of them apply with records of felony and drug busts, and not all can keep the job when they find how much it demands. The industry has a high personnel turnover rate both because of the unchecked greed of its CEOs and also an inherent culture of disdain for the consumers who keep them living well. Employees who are lied to and skirted daily by their call targets, and bullied by their bosses to bring in the revenue numbers, are indoctrinated to become law-bending and abusive. A collection agent can't read your mind or a thinly documented account to determine your honesty, and probably handles some genuinely negligent debtors among the many innocent economic displacements. I would surmise “Anonymous” eventually saw the bigger picture and got out of the game with his soul intact. If you want to throw stones, save them for management and its galley drum beaters.

Dear “Anonymous”, First why are you so afraid to provide “honest” information if you were a “legitimate” and courteous collector operating within the guidelines of the 15 U.S.C. § 1681 et seq.? I, for one, DO NOT buy the “story” you are selling. Your “facts” are inconsistent with this company’s proven practices and are NOT properly aligned with the FTC’s: FCRA.

Finally, have you ever considered the use of a “spell” checking program? If you want s to believe you are an upstanding, moral individual you might want to take English 101 AGAIN or at the very least, confer with a Grammar/Spell check program. WOW, did I say WOW? Yeah, I just said that.

All BS aside, you could not be any farther from the truth and reality on this issue!

"many of these companys do not properly identify themselves on Called ID."

Lynn: Annoying for sure, but not expressly illegal under Federal law. A DCA can skip trace a third party within strict limits, and I think cases of misrepresentation focus on phone call content and not CID. The FDCPA does mandate "meaningful disclosure of the caller’s identity", but I think a prosecutor would be looking for lack of a proper verbal greeting or unintelligible speech.

Anonymous, maybe people are annoyed because this company repeatedly calls people who do not have any outstanding debts. Because I am listed in the phone directory with my first initial and last name, I constantly get calls from these kinds of people for people I do not know. Calls come for people named Linda, Lysela, leo, Lynnette, Lydia, etc. This is harrassment. I've had my phone number since 1979. Also many of these companys do not properly identify themselves on Called ID. I thought this was illegal.

Sounds like a "zombie" debt collector. Buy old debts over seven years old for next to nothing and try to sucker people into making a small payment (which then reopens the debt obligation).

responding to a post by "anonymous" you may have worked for the company and "say" you were abused by the people you call, and that you were never rude to anyone. But the person that called me from this company was EXTREMELY rude, and was trying to collect on a debt that was 10 years old, THAT I HAVE ALREADY PAID FOR. So if you don't understand why is angers people you are a dumb ass.

This is for sure Portfolio Recovery, these guys call from a bunch of different numbers, I have no idea what debt i own them, and the one time I spoke with them, they refused to identify who they bought the debt from. They crack me up, they think we dont have access to any information and they are the only ones that know anything. I just save every number they use in my cell phone and never answer any of them. Keep calling idiots, it just isn't that hard to find out who you are.

Call your local phone company to see if they have a service called "Call Intercept".. there is a monthly charge to have this service. With "Call Intercept", you can block any number in the United States. I have "Call Intercept" on my home phone thru Verizon and I am able to block 25 numbers. The person calling your number will get a recording saying "THE PERSON YOU ARE CALLING DOES NOT ACCEPT CALLS FROM THIS NUMBER, GOOD BYE." It's GREAT blocking Portfolio Recovery Associates from calling all day from different numbers. I am hoping that Verizon will extend call count from 25 to 50 numbers.

I have a pretty cool tool through my phone company that I can wild card the phone numbers. For example to stop all calls from PRA I just put in all known area codes they call from vs the many numbers they call from other wise my list would be never ending. I use my cell phone for just about all calls I need to place so the home phone is bacially used for my fax machine. It kills there robo dialer that they claim they don't use into thinking the number is nonworking that whey they dial from the many locations.

These collection scub bags are the worst of the worst! Most of what they act on are time bared debts that the SOL is past, they will continue to call until they feel they have exhusted the phone lines. They listen to no one, even letters. They think they are above the law at every step of the game. From others posting to complaints at local, state and federal level these jerks don't give a rats ass about your rights or anyone elses rights. They will just dumb down any complaint filed. Virginia is a corporate friendly state and doe's not act on them as they don't want to loose the tax base that PRA bringing in. So nothing happens, plain and simple. You can see the numerious complianed filed on the books and no action is ever taken. Your comlpalints are just filed and they move on to the next and don't act on any of them.

They can call legally from 8am till 9pm. They have agencies in many states so they are going to have different numbers calling. Also just because u are on a do not call list does not mean they can't call. That is for solictors only. Also, just because the sol is out on an acct or it has been written off does not mean they can't call and try to collect on it. When a debt has been written off, it just means the orignal creditor got a tax break on it, not that the debt is not owed anymore. Also all the SOL means is that they can't sue u if the SOL is past, and if u do make a payment on an acct that the SOL is out of date on, it will restart it again. NOT ALL the collectors at PRA are Scum suckers, bitches or worse. I have been called everything but a real person when trying to exolain abt an acct. If the person on the ph is not the person they are trying to reach, by law they are not suppose to say anything abt the acct, that is the reason they say it is personal business. Also we were told to verify if we had the correct person by verifing the SSN. By law they are not suppose to tell any third party abt the acct. That is why they ask for information. If they are calling u on ur cell ph or at work, ask them to stop, I was trained to remove the number when this accurred. Also if u don't want them to call, write the company and tell them and they are supposed to cease all calls, and only contact u by mail. I was never rude to anyone that I talked to, all thou I was cussed out alot, I understand that not all the collectors were that way and understand why many people are upset. I quit because of the cussings and abuse I had to take everyday. So it is a two way street. I am in no way taking up for this company, but just wanted to explain a few details that seems like folks are being mis informed on. Also have seen posting abt them telling people they cld not record them, but i was trained to say ok that is fine and go on with the call. If everybody had to work in this job and hear all the lies that were told to us abt people not living there and everything else, when u cld plainly hear them in the background with names being said and all, then maybe people cld understand a little more why they are not believed so much when they tell them wrong number. Again I understand ur views also, as I have been on ur end of the ph call to. That is the reason I tried to be nice to people, as I wld not pay anyone that was rude to me also. I know there are a lot of rude people that work for this company, but there are alot of nice and considerate people that work there also, and like me were just doing a job that they are paid to do just like everybody else in the country.

portfolio recovery debt collecters who are bottom feeders. They "buy" old debt for pennies on dollars then will try to screw the debtor for original amount or more even though many times has been written off. Sometimes these scumbags do indeed use ficticious phone numbers and area codes to get around the do not call lists. Their MO also includes calling asking for "Susan" or "Jose" or "Robert" basically anyone, and once you say no, they will quickly try so sneak in another name like 'well, do you know Gerald' for instance, trying to catch the person they called off guard. I think these Portfolio Recovery people, and scammers like them should be dragged out and given a good old Texas ass whipping!

Block them. There is no other way. They have old tel#'s and either don't believe, or don't care that you are not their person (if they even have a person).

I don't have any debts whatsoever! So, I don't know why calling me they would think that I would pay them anything. totally annoying.

The debt they're trying to collect has been resold half a dozen times. Hell, they're worse than me, I didn't get in debt by buying bad debt. Just keep selling it until I don't owe anything.

Looks like Another Collection Agency who likes to hide behind a SPOOFED phone number. Does this qualify as something that violates the FAIR DEBT COLLECTION PRACTICES ACT??? The calling a dozen times a day with phone numbers that trace back to them say it more than likely is. PLUS they don't care if the debt is a "Time Barred Debt" in which the statute of limitations has ran out on, let alone they have the right person.

Note This readers:

Where do I report a debt collector for an alleged violation?
Report any problems you have with a debt collector to your state Attorney General’s office (www.naag.org) and the Federal Trade Commission (www.ftc.gov). Many states have their own debt collection laws that are different from the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Your Attorney General’s office can help you determine your rights under your state’s law.

Let's get these bottom feeding quick-buck-makers shut down.

I think this company would eventually go out of business if no one ever pays what they claim is owed. Seems to me if anyone pays them on one thing, they would go back looking for something else to come back to the same person trying to harass them for more money.

It must suck to have a job of this type.

I have not answered the phone, but I did have someone call me a year
ago telling me I owed money to a company I did business with. Upon calling
the company they are "trying to collect for", I was told to call the police.
I did not owe the money.

I ask the debt collector to prove I owe this money, he told me to prove
I didn't. What an idot. How can you prove something like this. Dumba**

These people bought a bad debt that was actually already written off from who they bought it from. Can they do that? I get multiple calls from these guys from different #'s and then google them and they all come up as same company....

Called but no message. Portfolio Recovery has been calling me for months based on a debt my ex-wife ran up. I have tried to push them to go to court but they refuse. The last time they did so, on a differnt Credit Card, I responded as required by law and they didn't pursue it because they know they will lose. Seems they add a new number every few months. With modern technology, I am able to forward all their numbers direct to Voice Mail (never rings), so they don't even bother leaving messages anymore. Here are all the number I have collected:

866-940-7640
800-722-1413
757-961-3547
757-961-3548
866-909-0529
866-691-3568
757-961-3546
877-803-0008
757-961-3544

Have been receiving calls from these people, different numbers for a relative of mine who apparently gave out my phone number and now they are bombarding me with collection calls. They are scam-mafia-like scum and I will NOT pay a bill for a relative or any other person. They apparently don't care who they collect the debt from (if in fact it is a debt). They care only for getting money. Doesn't matter who it is they scam.

Yep, It's those annoying folks from Portfolio Recovery. I guess they have a slew of out of state phone numbers. They even have one from Schiller Park, IL wich is 847-678-9710 in case someone gets a call from that number too! I'm so tired of these folks...when will they be put out of business????

called looking for Susan which we do not know and then the stupid collector asked if she lived here...if we don't know Susan would she live here? LOL---bottom feeder collection agency that buys old debts calling from Tennessee? We do not have business with these azz clowns but we are unfortunate that we have a common last name so they call everyone hoping they will find their deadbeat. Their "Susan" probably does not have a land line phone because we get so many calls for her. One more call from these folks and we will take proper action against them. They do not properly identify themselves so they could be in violation of that and other laws!
