If you are receiving repeated, misdirected, and/or abusive calls from a third party debt collector, you may find relief in the provisions of the FDCPA, the federal law which regulates collector behavior. Learn your rights at FTC-dot-gov. See also your state laws for additional support.

Cathy: Now you know what aggressive skip tracing sounds like. Obviously (to the rep) you are hiding this relative in your attic and you can be rattled enough to produce that person. Send a cease-comm notice via USPS Certified with card. The FTC and many consumer watchdogs explain how to draft one.

Asterix: There are numerous reasons for a debt collector to call, but it's not sequential dialing. You're either thought to be a debtor or can help locate one. Their calls to mobile devices become illegal once notified, by the way.

KDB: Collectors will always start with whatever contact data is on an account, but may branch out to relatives, neighbors, workplaces, or anyone they think could help. Strictly from an efficiency and investigatory standpoint, this makes sense. The usual problem is that collection reps are trained to disbelieve anything they are told which thwarts payment. The common problem which follows is a conflict in the law. A collector must make "meaningful disclosure" of its identity yet respect the privacy of whoever is named on a debt account. Most lean toward saying as little as possible to avoid lawsuits.

Adam: The tactics reported here are not merely "strong arming", they are hostile and illegal! No one should come to a "payment arrangement" with such a scofflaw. Challenge all claims and don't tolerate bad behavior. Again, the FTC and rights advocates explain the proper stance to take.

We've been getting daily calls for a couple of weeks and decided to answer the phone. The guy asked for a family member who no longer lives with us. When I told him that, he insisted I give him their current phone number. I told him he could look it up on the internet. He insisted his call was important and that I take down his phone number. That company should not be allowed to harass family members!

Called me on my cell twice. I didn't answer. I rarely give out my cell number. Could it be -- a very patient person went through a block of cell phone numbers and picked up the names from the voicemail answer. Then they made them available to whomever wanted them. So I've changed my voicemail answer to "Please leave a message"

Have been receiving many calls from this number and 636-925-3773. They call several times a day but say nothing when we answer. It's more than annoying... it's harrassment! If they have a reason for their call they should state it or stop the calling! My idea is that it is some collection agency that is attempting to collect a debt and the debtor (bless their heart) has given our number out. If they are so smart why don't they check the phone service to see what name the account is in before they continue to harrass people.? Rocket scientists...

I started receiving calls from this number a week ago. They called my work and a few family members phones to get a hold of me. I called the number yesterday and was given the run-around. I was transferred to 7 different people who had no idea who I was! They were finally able to verify me when I stupidly gave them my cell phone number. The lady said she was with the Dept of Education and that I needed to pay my loan off today. When I told her that I already made arrangements two weeks ago, she became very rude and said I needed to pay over the phone right now or I would be in default. She knew how much my loan was and other private information, so it sounded legitimate at the time. I foolishly gave her my checking account number and she wanted to know how much money I had in there. That was a major red flag. When I told her I wouldn't be able to pay until Thursday, she hung up on me. When I called back, I got transferred numerous times and was yelled at each time. They kept asking for my account number and SSN. I got hateful and hung up the phone. I came across this website yesterday and read everyones stories, so I closed my checking account before these scammers could do anything. DO NOT ANSWER THE PHONE OR GIVE THEM ANY INFORMATION!

The compliance managers name is Ben Colemand - atleast he says he is. Any collection agency that answers their phone using their initials is not one to deal with or intends to be professional. A gentleman answers the phone "FAMS"... I have received several calls and am a very understanding person as to how this happens!
The only time I get upset is when the person on the other end of the phone is not working with me to stop the calls from happening in the future. Dont bother pressing 2 because the automated dialer will just hang up on you and call again later on. You will need to dial 6396-925-5390 and ask for their Compliance Manager Ben Coleman if you wish to be treated professionally and see that your number is removed.

They call the house and leave no message. They call me at work at say they are looking for my brother but won't say who they are or what they want, so I won't give them info on him. Just today they called my best friend's cell phone saying they were given that phone number for him. No way does my brother even have that cell phone number. Very creepy weird.

This collection agency has been calling me AT WORK for more than a week not — despite me repeatedly telling them that I am not the person they are looking for, that they have the wrong number. They call like clockwork at 9:30 every day and again several times throughout the day. I can't believe this kind of harassment is legal — whatever the circumstances.

FAMS, they are rude and you should find out what creditor they represent then call the creditor first before giving them any information - THey told me they repped Dept of Education, which they do work with, but by called Dept of Ed first I saved myself $5K in fees I would have had to pay if I would have set up a payment arrangement with these people. They are a debt collector, but they are VERY SNEAKY!!!!!

The caller, who was extremely pleasant, informed me that someone had given my name as a reference. However, I've never even heard of the person who supposedly submitted my name. I asked what type of company she represented - and I was told 'financial services.' When I specifically asked if they handle collections, she indicated they did not. However, when I called the number back, the rep that answered told me they do, in fact, handle collections.I was transferred to a manager who assured me they would remove my name and number from their data base. When I asked how they could possibly have my name and unlisted number in the first place, she suggested that my name might have been crossed with someone elses on their list. This certainly doesn't explain how they got my name and unlisted phone number in the first place. Very strange. If they continue to call me again, I will report them to the appropriate authorities.

I used to work for this company. While it is true they do strong arm you, they are a legitimate collection agency. They collect on Sallie Mae, US department of education, Chase, Capital One, Bank of America, and AT&T. It is unfortunate to see some of you say stupid things like don't answer, they will go away. While that may be true, the debt will never go away. They will keep transferring it to different collection agencies, then finally sue you and garnish your wages. In all honesty, it is best to work out a payment arrangement now than keep waiting. To be honest, they won't turn down money. As long as you are honest with them, they do listen. Take this from someone who used to work for them.

Receiving repeated calls from 636-925-5300. Caller ID says it's from Fin Asset Mgmt. Been calling for several days now. Not answering anymore. Most of the calls to my home number is now from this number- includes calls into the evening. I don't owe any debts and when retiring years ago cancelled all my credit cards- so if this is a collection company as I've read in some of the other comments here, they are way off based. I'm considering cancelling my phone service. My phone provider says they'll block the calls- for a fee of course- no way; they'll just loose my business.

Normally, I don't answer calls from numbers I don't recognize, but I was expecting a call back from someone and didn't look at the caller ID. I answer, and a man asked to speak to someone I've never heard of - John Smith, we'll say. When I told him he had the wrong number, he said "Mr. Smith, you need to stop lying and pay your bills, or things will get really bad for you!" Once more, I told him he had the wrong number and hung up. The line wasn't closed good when the phone rang again, same number. I was curious now, so I answered. There was no preamble, just a launch into a profanity-laced tirade about not hanging up on him, paying my bills on time, yada, yada, yada. I hung up. Again, the phone rings, same number. I didn't answer. Very tempted to call the AG's office in Missouri though. Even though I wasn't the person this guy was looking for, that's still no way to conduct yourself. Not sure what it is about having the protection of being on the phone that makes these guys so belligerent and rude, but I'll bet he'd be much calmer and civil if he was eye to eye with someone rather than on the phone.

These people call repeatedly and refuse to obey the law. I have reported them to the FTC and local officials since they 1) are calling for a person who does not live here and I do not know 2)they continue to call after they have been informed of this fact and 3) they continue to call after I gave them notice verbally and in writing to stop calling my phone number. If they call you Do Not Answer and REPORT THEM! They are operating outside the law and need to be shut down! And yes, these criminals are equivalent to COCKROACHES in my personal opinion and need to be stepped on! Harassing innocent people who DO NOT OWE ANY DEBTS is not only against the law, it shows how slipshod and lazy the employees and management of this company operates.

If a debt collector does contact you after you request that he stop, you might have the right to sue and collect damages.

Quote the actual law to the caller:

"The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act requires that you stop phoning me at home and at work once I request that you do so. I intend to send you a certified letter tomorrow putting my no contact request in writing. If you continue to phone me, then I will file a complaint with the FTC and the attorney general."

If they don't stop after that then send them a certified letter with your request and contact your local District Attorney's office with your complaint and any other pertinent information you can provide.

If a debt collector does contact you after you request that he stop, you might have the right to sue and collect damages. I would -

I found out they are

Financial Asset Management Systems
Corporate Offices
2859 Paces Ferry Road
Suite 510
Atlanta, GA 30339

So very annoying, if I answer they ask for my name or hang up, if I don't answer, I get a dial tone on my voicemail.
I get these calls all the time-I did a day of research, for the greater good I hope, and I FINALLY GOT THEIR # it's
(probably should dial *67 first, wait for dial tone then call)

1-636-925-5300

They are so shocked to get a call back since it's not the number they called from. I tried many avenues, and this is them. Call them!
If somebody answers, you may express your displeasure, if nobody answers, you can reach a Sol Canton at extension 2104 when prompted for an extension. (Maybe other extensions too, but that's the one I got that went through) They call from several different numbers, and they are truly bottom feeders.
FIGHT BACK!
I finally reached a 'concerned' manager at one point, and you could hear his 'I'm going to keep this person on until I get some information' tone, so make sure you sign up for the 'Do Not Call List' at

www.donotcall.gov

It takes 10 seconds to sign up and after 30 days you can make a formal complaint.

Financial Assets Management - These guys are a strong arm collection agency and have been calling me about a Chase credit card. They repeatedly call me at work. I have told them in no uncertain terms that they must stop calling me at work and should correspond with me via U.S. mail, but they continue calling me at work. I was polite with them on the one occasion I spoke with them. Some manager who had been listening in on the phone call didn't like hearing me tell them I had no money to pay them. He jumped in and began aggressively threatening me. I repeated to him, again politely, that they must stop calling me at work and told him that was my official notice they stop. This, of course, added to his rage. Rather than waste my time listening to some imbecile go off the deep end I just hung up. They have continued calling me since then and I no longer answer the phone. I have done some research online and found numerous complaints against this company. They are clearly breaking the law and it would seem the FTC is either toothless or is OK with turning a blind eye to this type of criminal collection practice. A SUGGESTION TO ALL WHO MAY READ THIS: If you must answer their calls (which I no longer do), tell them one thing and one thing only "Stop calling me! This is your official notice. If you call again I will file a complaint." THEN, file a complaint with the FTC and pray that some day the FTC will start taking these things seriously. Best of luck to you my fellow consumer victims.

They seem to be FINANCIAL ASSET MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS, INC. Missouri Operations Center 70 Corporate Hills Drive, Suite 103, St. Charles, MO  63301. I got this information from my caller ID and the internet. They are a collection agency known for illegal practices and rude behavior. They have never sent me the required notice in the mail before they began harassing me by phone. I do not owe any debts but they call every couple of minutes and let the phone ring 2 times. This goes on for a while then they let the phone ring for about 40 times. This has been going on now for 2 months or more. I have sent all this information to the FTC. I suggest you do the same if you are also being harassed by this company presumably for debts you do not owe.

I don't answer calls from anyone I do not know. They began calling my phone number in January and they are still calling today. They call every few minutes for about an hour and they only let the phone ring about 2-3 times. Then a few more times during the day and let it ring for 30 times or more. This has happened day and night everyday since they began calling. I don't know what they want nor do I care.

If you are behind on your credit cards and they have turned it over to one of these collection companies...this is what you do...NOTHING!!! Do not answer your phone. Do Not give them ANY information. Do not confirm your name, address, city, state, bank account, credit card number, social security number. NOTHING. Eventually they will go away. If you open a dialog with them then they will hammer you into an agreement to pay, you will give them an account number (bank or cc) and watch ALL of your money disappear!

Someone from this company called me asking if I'd seen my neighbors today (9:30 a.m.) He had the names correct but I don't know how they got MY phone number in order to contact them. I told him if it was an emergency, he should hang up and call 911. He said he had some personal information they needed, so I told him to call THEM and leave a voicemail. It just surprised me as contacting me seems to be a new low in the fine art of debt-collection (or personal information management.?..)

I do not know what these people are about but they have called twice so far asking for people I have never heard of, both times different names. My credit score is over 750 and I have no debts what so ever except for my mortgage which has never been late, I have never been with Cingular either. So far they haven't really tried getting any information from me, which I would not give them if they did because you have to be an idiot to just give out information to anyone that called. But I would like to know why they keep calling asking if I know random people... The first time the person just asked for me by name then asked if I knew so and so then when I said nope they said ok and hung up. The calls are wierd and I think if they have no other purpose I consider them scammers.

OK, getting these calls on my cel, never answered. Got some info from this company. I Pretended to be a new client looking to sell some of my over due accounts. Supposedly V.P. of sales (i.e. collection account purchasing) is Gary Turner, his direct number is 770-888-3626. I ran this number and it seems to be a residential # and address. So, not sure if it's real. Maybe he works from his home. If it's a real V.P. feel free to harass someone back.

Just wanted to add a note on here. Recieved a call from 636-925-5300 a couple times this week, finally today a message was left for me. The company is Financial Assests Management (FAM). Found out the company name with a google search and found this website here. Glad I looked it up because I wouldn't have returned the call otherwise. Just wanted to say sometimes calls from companies like FAM are totally legit. FAM is the holder of my US Dept of Education student loans. Everyone I have dealt with at the company have been polite and helpful. I work in a call center doing customer service myself and know that sometimes the attitude that a caller gets from a rep is just mirroring the tone of the customer. In my opinion if they are calling you, you should at least call back and verify it is a legit call to collect a legit debt.
Today I spoke with a James in regards to the message I got and he was helpful and polite.... but then again I was nice and polite also.

Get multiple calls a day, Mrs. Banks, Ms. Krispee (wonderful british accent), Alysha, some guy. Often it is a prerecorded message on the machine. When my husband answers they just ask for me and identify themselves by name, but NEVER by company. He hangs up on them. The one time I spoke to them, they told me they were collecting for Cingular, from whom I do have an outstanding balance. I requested they never call again, of course they didn't listen. These people somehow got my parents phone number and harassed my mother about me having an outstanding debt with Chase. When I asked how they got my parents number they were rude and began just expressing to me that I needed to pay them asap or I would be going to collections, yet they said they were collections??? I paid off my chase m/c in July yet somehow these people claim I didn't. Chase even sent me a letter saying thank you for you pay off. This company needs to be taken down. Auto calling people many times a day for weeks and months is harassment (with stress on the second syllable). Business practices like this would be outlawed if congress wasn't bought and paid for by greedy, amoral, corrupt, lobbyists; but I digress. This Financial Asset Management company occupies the same economic strata that money changers did in the temple 2000 years ago, or divorce lawyers or ex-Enron CEOs fill today. In an ecological niche, they would be leaches or tapeworms, parasites hungry for an unwary host. No, I take that back, more like wolves that pretend to be sheep. Yes, desperate and depraved, mangy, red-eyed wolves, peering at your house from the dark corners of your lawn. Looking for an unlocked door or window and rummaging through your garbage when no ones looking. Whoops, there I go again- digressing. Beware these people and tell them nothing. Don't be phish food for these bottom feeding info-carps. Get PhoneTray Free and block 'um.

some how they accessed my savings and checking account and tried to remove 1500.00 dollars the exact balance I had at the time lucky a teller noticed my history of payments and notified me in time to stop and change account # saying they have seen cingular try it before.

Received a call and a message to call back 800-719-9924, and a non-existent extension, 6608. Criss-crossed number to Financial Asset Management Systems, Inc. at 636-925-5300, in Missouri. Spoke to Kim Moses, then to Victor Webb, then to Jay (J.?) Bateman, who identified himself as the manager. Mr. Bateman said that his office is at 1967 Lakeside Parkway, #402, Tucker, Georgia 30084. He explained that the company is a bill collection agency, and that they obviously "called the wrong number." But my number is unlisted, and they left a message for me by name. I have a perfect credit rating and don't owe anybody any money, so I'm still curious how they got my unlisted number. They would only say that "we have ways of getting unlisted numbers." They also refused to give me the name of their attorney of record.

Called leaving messages and once spoke to my husband - told him that they were trying to collect a debt that was in my name, not his and asking him for my social security number. Told me his name was Sol.

I think you need to educate YOURself. If the Department of Education hires an outside source to collect a debt, it IS misrepresentation for the caller from the hired company to claim to be calling from the Department of Education. The caller should introduce him/herself by name and state the company's name which they are calling from at the very beginning of the call. The rep should only refer to the Dept. of Education as the client for whom he or she is collecting the debt.

They called looking for someone who doesn't live here. I told them so, and they said they would remove my number. We'll see.

They gave this number as their return #: 800-7199-9924

The Do Not Call Registry does not apply to the collection of debts. Educate yourselves. Financial Asset Management Systems does not buy accounts either, they are hired by the companies to talk to people because you won't voluntarily respond, and you're already extremely delinquent. By being belligerent and evasive yourselves all you're doing is continuing to not pay your bills. If it is fraud, or a disputed account, hiding doesn't fix it. Resolve the problem, which doesn't always mean paying on it. Reporting a collection agency calling you when you aren't being cooperative or verifying your identity doesn't hurt them. However, offensive messages and phone calls are not called for, and no one can defend that. In lieu of the department of education, FAMS is hired to represent them, so they're not misrepresenting a single thing. Good day.

I keep getting calls from this number as well. The number traces back to Financial Assets Mgmt at the following website: www.fams.net These guys keep calling asking for a person we've never heard of. We're on the DNC registry. I'm going to report these guys to our local DA.

A so-called "Mrs. Andrews" with the fakest southern accent I've ever heard has called no less than 4 times a day for nearly 2 weeks now, excluding weekends. I've answered once or twice and have had the same recorded message each time.

These people have been calling several times just about every day. I don't answer the phone when I see this number on caller ID. They say that our Chase account has been sold to them. I talked with them the first time they called and I told them not to call back but, they did anyway. I ended up losing my temper and told them to go to hell and hung up. I was so mad and upset that I was shaking. I have not answered the phone since then when I see this number. They don't usually leave a message but, when they do, it is usually some guy that doesn't identify his company or why he is calling. Our son told us about your website.
Thanks!
