scam
man
Called and asked for me by [first name] (first strike--I don't have my name connected to the number called).

Asked who was calling--would not give name or organization's name, but kept asking for me by first name and wanted me to admit that I was the person by that name. (second strike--why so insistent about my ID?)

When I insisted on knowing the nature of the call (more than once without admitting to anything), the man hung up after saying he would only speak with [first name]. Obvious scam attempted and thwarted--but how did they get the number to call?

This is just another sleezy scam. No legitimate charity raises $ using nusiance cold calls. The fund raising costs are far too high. The only ones getting any money are the sleezy fund raiser creeps. If you want to support public safety officials - law enforcement, fire fighters, etc. donate to The 100 Club. The 100 Club is legitimate and ethical. The 100 Club won't call trying to steal your $.

A man asked for a one time donation of $5.00 to help the families of Texas Highway Patrol Officers. He reported that we lost 4 officers in the line of duty this year (which would have to have been last year since this is only Jan 15, 2009). He offered to send a donation packet by mail. In the past I have been told that there is no connection.
