Conducting a legit survey. These people are extremely annoying. They have called my wife's cell phone 10 times in 2 weeks. The 3 times she has answered, she has politely told them she is not participating and for them to not call her back. Of course, they just call back the next day.

She does not care that that survey is legit: she chooses to not participate and these knuckleheads should respect that and stop calling her.

I have had many problems with this company and as such have alot of info to share-- They got my name from another scam, the door to door magazine sales where the salesperson is trying to make points for talking to people or for some school function. Twice i gave them money and each time I wrote a different fake name in the box BUT the correct phone number. No magazines ever but I recived phone scams to get additional payments to "fix" the problem. Now Westat has been calling me and asking for the head of household, after a dozen generic calls they asked for one of the fake names!! they send different "surveys" and EACH one gets another peice of personal info, one from NOAA wanted family income and a birth date. Another "survey" was mostly junk BUT it wanted my legal name for state record identification and the last 4 of my social LOL!! They even send money to encorage me to return it. $2 bills LOL! They have many angles and are very smart to not alert most of what they are up to. If you are getting calls from this number good luck to you and beware EVERYTHING FOR MANY YEARS!! your social is worth around $5000 today and a complete ID can go for $10,000 or more so watch yourselves.

Oh, gee, RevB, you sure enlightened me - the research might help people and I could even be compensated for it. Well, with that change of heart, I should sign up to be a medical experiment participant as often as possible! NO! Why? Because I choose not to. I should not be harassed for that.

Also, I never mentioned compensation, but since you brought it up - my time is worth more than that $25. That is above and beyond the simple fact that my time is mine to do with as I wish, and I do not wish to participate in this research.
Chris
 Jun 30th, 2010
and btw Chris, just fyi and if you had stayed on the cell phone long enough (after the initial introduction of the study) you probably would have found out you would be compensated on a cell call for $25 dollars, for about 20-30 minutes of your time, and I doubt your cell time is more than 83 cents per minute...and they would have accomodated a callback on a weekend to have it be free for you and still paid the compensation...

As far as being a moron for being an apologist, you are entitled to your opinion. your privacy is only violated when you sign up for a service you know ahead of time can be randomly accessed, then expect it never to happen! ANYONE can randomly access a phone number so therefore it never has been nor will be 'private'. Also if you knew any scientific logic about surveys or research, you would understand that RANDOM selection is vital to accurate data. If only people interested in a particular subject volunteered to participate that is far from a true cross section of data. Maybe people could stop being so selfish about 'their time' and 'their privacy' and actually participate with something that might help their fellow man... It may even be they themselves or a family member that eventually will benefit from or already has benefitted from such research... such research opens doors for increased medical services and other public services that benefit the public, not harm them.

Came up on caller-id as WESTAT INC RESE with phone number 240-453-2908 this morning about 11:30 am. No idea who this is and since we're on a DNC list I'm not about to waste my time with it. They didn't leave a message and hopefully they don't try calling again and bothering us.

To the morons acting as apologists for this company, it is simple - if the person isn't answering you, stop calling them. Drop your excuses, stop calling them.

Great, you are doing stuff for the government. I will make sure to contact my congresswoman's office tomorrow to raise my objections to the use of this company for taxpayer work. I have received more than a dozen calls from this company. I don't answer calls from people I don't know. I don't care if you agree with that policy or not, IT IS MY PHONE AND THAT IS HOW I CHOOSE TO USE IT. I shouldn't need to talk to you guys to tell you to stop spamming my phone number. After a couple of calls, it should be clear I am not going to answer you.

P.S. - This is a cell phone and I travel a lot. Yeah, you might be calling before 9pm in my area code (but only be a few minutes), but that is well after 9pm where I sometimes am. It's the modern day, and we are transitioning to a mobile phone culture where area codes have less and less meaning. Yes, I recognize you may not know where my phone physically is, but you can also STOP CALLING when I am NOT ANSWERING.

They called and asked my wife to take a survey. I said in the back ground "hang up". The next thing I hear her say is her birth date. I took the phone away and hung it up. They called back and asked for my wife and I told them that I don't trust them and why would you ask for a birth date. He said for age verification. I said why don't you ask for her age and not her birthday and hung up. Can't believe she blerted it out to a stranger on the phone. Goes to show you it can be done.

I have actually answered the phone seven times with this company. Each time, they've said they're calling from UCLA. The first time I told them I don't do phone surveys and to take my number off their list but that I'd check out their supposed survey on the internet. I did and was sure I didn't want to do the survey. I've told them each time to take my number off their list. I check my phone to see missed calls every day and this company has called 15 - 20 times during the day while I'm at work. No message left, of course. Just now, they called again and I exploded at the caller and demanded to speak to a supervisor. She said there was no supervisor available but she'd have someone call me. No call back yet and I doubt it will happen. This is so obviously a scam on not only those of us who are having our time wasted repeatedly but also on whoever is paying them to make these calls. My guess is that they're paid per call and every time they call (regardless of how many times they've called the *same* number) they're charging some company somewhere for it. I told the woman today that I will complain to the state about them. I'll be doing that as well as the FCC. A Company like this should not be exempt and free to harass people in their own homes. Nothing, NOTHING can justify this many calls to the same number!! As for your apologists on here who say you work for this company, I suggest you seek honest employment. You're scammers!!

Wether or not there is any legitimacy to this WESTAT company (and I'm not arguing that there isn't, "establishing the link between aspirin and Reye's syndrome" sounds all well and good, very noble indeed), and wether or not there is a legal loophole for this company that excludes them from the rules of the "Do Not Call List", it does not make it any more ethical to invade people's privacy by calling their personal home phone to conduct surveys. If you need volunteers, fantastic... use a public forum of some kind to entice said volunteers. Stop stealing my privacy! My home is the only peaceful haven I have right now!

Westat does not hide its ID. If the call comes through as "unknown number" etc., this is a result of procedures in your state or by your provider. This is an unfortunate and unavoidable problem for which Westat is not responsible. Westat also does not play music into your phone, or call after 9 PM in your time zone, so it seems some are confusing phone calls from other entities with those from Westat when the Caller ID does not function. The research firm leaves a message the first time, but does not trouble you with repetitive answering machine messages. They administer many important government/health studies, including studies on cancer and familial relationships, and studies on bone marrow transplants. As one person already mentioned, it was their research which established the connection between aspirin and Reye's syndrome in children. The aim is not to harrass you, but to address problems common to all of us, for the benefit of all. You may make money for your time in the process. Respondents are always offered a legitimate telephone number and website to check for legitimacy of the study, and for federal studies with an OMB (Office of Management and Budget) number, you are given that upon request. Because this important research is not telemarketing or sales, but beneficial to all, Do Not Call rules don't apply.

and just fyi, the hours that people are called are based in their time zone, unless there is a fluke and perhaps a call for the east coast gets mixed up in a west coast list due to a human error in coding ( happens)
the times are weekdays 9am-9pm that participants are called, in their own time zones, and weekends 10am-6 pm Saturdays, 1 pm-9 pm Sundays. Any variance is an error and will be apologized for of course! These are real people on the other end that are not trying to harm you in any way, very nice and dedicated social science researchers, most with higher educations, not telemarketers or solicitors. They are just trying to do their job and make it a pleasant experience for all. Go easy on them...

None of us should be so busy that there is never a good time to take a few minutes to help our country. If Westat calls at a poor time for you they are quite happy to call back at a better time. Also, they do indeed leave a message if possible the first time they get a machine, but do not every additional time they try, as that we be even more annoying than no message. Just take the few minutes, put it behind you - 'problem' solved!

Participating in a government survey for government studies is a public service, similar to jury selection and should not be avoided but embraced. So often we complain the government doesn't listen, then when they are trying to find out what we think, people complain as they do here. The few minutes it takes is less than it takes to post here. And, the government on that NHTS study IS compensating people financially for their time in participating with the study, so they are not asking for anything, they are actually offering some small monetary compensation. The reason there is not a list is as you have read, this is a function exempt from DNC lists because it is not a sale or solicitation or advertisement of any type, and two, because it is a scientific study - participants are selected at random...random being the key word. Once a random selection is made, to remove it or replace it would skew the data and statistics. If Americans want true information and valid statistics, participation is vital. Otherwise, transportation patterns and information are not adequately represented, leaving planners and policy makers bereft of useful data or data appropriate to guiding their decisions.

I don't understand how performing a survey can be a SCAM. They arent asking for anything but your time. Once you answer the questions, exactly how have you been scammed? And, those that have participated have received money for their time. How have they been scammed, exactly? I would love to know. If you headed an organization and wanted to improve it, say, by making travel safer, public transportation more convenient, or make alternative fuels available in the areas where the most drivers would benefit, how would you do that? LOL, watching camera footage for a week would really be a great help with that! Grobalz seems to have you pegged fairly well! Also regarding the DO NOT CALL LIST. Do not spout it if you do not know it. Take a couple of your ohsoprecious minutes and look up what it entails. If you hang up on this company, they will simply call you back. So grow some balls, and simply tell them that you do not want to do the survey. They will then assume that you don't care about highway congestion, the cost of travel, the availability of public transportation, special services for elderly and disabled people in your community, or how safely your children get to and from school. The wealth of information derived from these studies can be seen here, where reports using different aspects of the study are shared. http://nhts.ornl.gov/publications.shtml

1. Pick up the phone, tell the person that you're not interested, and the calls will stop. Not too hard.

2. You're so busy that you can't do a survey, but you have time to find this site and leave a message whining about it. Makes sense.

3. If they call and don't leave a message, it's annoying. Sure- and if they left a message every time they called, you'd whine even more about that.

4. I like the "weak-minded, weak-willed" comment. Here's one for you: "whiny, hostile coward". Wipe the nacho crumbs off of that dirty t-shirt that is barely covering your distended belly and pick up the phone. It will stop all of those scary telephone calls that disturb your oh-so-busy day, and it will probably be the most calories you've burned in five years.

5. Do any of you have jobs? If so, are any of those jobs specifically trying make the world better for everyone? Westat established the link between aspirin and Reye's Syndrome, almost certainly saving children's lives. Now that's a waste of time and/or a scam, right?

Having a website doesn't make it ligit IMHO, there are websites selling anti gravity shoes too. I spoke with one friendly and polite person and asked to be removed from their database it never happened. I still get the calls all the time. This contracting is done because state and federal companies end up under budget, is there no better way to find the info other then call people in their homes after they've been working all day? And the best part is taxpayers pay for some (not all) of this. My call was for traffic and commuting in northern VA, heres a easy fix www.trafficland.com watch the cameras for a week and leave everyone alone...

Responding to MONA, AMY, READER, JWYSOCKI, and especially LADYGRACE. Look at the consistent themes throughout. When a company lies and says they CANNOT REMOVE a number from their database, that is a scam. When they tell you they cannot control the numbers called b/c they are "randomly generated numbers", that is both a lie AND a scam. They may be a "legit" co. in the sense that they have and EIN and they happen to have a govt contract, but their behavior is that of a scam artist. And here LADYGRACE calls those with valid complaints a liers b/c it is "impossible" for their system to place a call after 9:00PM. B.S! I have recvd a call at 9:30 pm from Westat. To the apologist posters who say the call was OK, I'm glad you had the time to spare. They were nice b/c you gave them exactly what they wanted.(Even the devil rewards those that give him what he wants. It's no skin off their nose to be nice to keep you on the phone.)For those w/no time or interest, it's a different story. Take me off your list, I'm not interested, don't ever call me again. No means no, and to say that they will stop if you only give them what they want is weak-minded and weak-willed. If your have a complaint, take it a step further and contact the rep at NHTS (Adella.Santos@dot.gov). Or start calling staff at the Federal Highway Admin, under which the NHTS operates. There is a list of staff/phone nos at https://fhwaapps.fhwa.dot.gov/foisp/hqphone.do Contact your legislators to insist that the DNC regs include requirements that "exempt orgs" must cease calling at the first request!

Call one of these two numbers to end the harrassment - 1-888-817-2810 or 301-251-1500. Demand to speak with a supervisor and wait it out until you get one. (A regular worker bee had the gall to tell me the company could not remove my number b/c it would mess up their research, as if I cared! She said that once you are in their database you are in there for good.) When you get a supervisor, insist that they remove your number while you are on the line. They are very arrogant about it but will remove you if you stick with the call. Believe me, this company feels ENTITLED to call you repeatedly, and at all hours. You will not get an apology for the harassment of repeated calls, the inconvenience of having to ask over and over to be removed, but you should be able to get them to remove your number from their database.

Research companies dont have a do not call list. Thats why your being contacted!! I know for a fact that we dont call past 9pm. This companies hours would make it utterly impossible for you to get a call at 3am. These surveys are actually contracted out by the goverment and help get critical information that is actually very important.
