I picked up the phone and a person started talking about a 14 day free trial of something. She had a very thick accent so I was unable to determine what she was selling before I hung up on her. Out of curiosity I called the number back and received a message that it was an “unused number at Bear Stearns”. The message referred me to 212-272-2000. I called that number and was informed that they don’t sell anything and they don’t make calls like this. Bear Stearns appears to be an investor/mortgage company located in New York City. The company appears to be reputable so the caller ID name and number that I received may have been spoofed.

Since my phone number is on the National Do-Not-Call list and to the best of my knowledge I have not done business with Bear Stearns, I filed a complaint with the FTC. Perhaps they can figure out who actually called. I also contacted Verizon in New York just in case they have received other complaints.
