PECO is alerting Philadelphia-area customers to a utility scam that claims customers can get help with their utility bills from the federal government.
Scammers are contacting customers through social media, text messages and U.S. mail, claiming a program from the Obama Administration can help pay their bills. Customers are then asked for their Social Security numbers and other personal information, and the scammer says payment will be made from a Federal Reserve bank account directly to their utility company.
PECO said customers should never give out their Social Security number or other information over the phone unless the customer has initiated the call. Customers who want to check the validity of a call should hang up and call PECO directly at 1-800-494-4000
Customers also shouldn't allow access into their home from anyone who claims to be from PECO, or a PECO contractor, unless the visit was scheduled and the person has proper ID.
