i am pretty sure from reading this list that this is a scam and that of course they will post here to say they are just students doing research... NO BANK WILL CALL AND ASK YOU FOR YOUR INFO... you people are a trip... scammers obviously dont observe the do not call list... how about you dont pick up the phone... i didnt... but i was curious as to who it was...
I recieved a call from this number they were calling about "my" accout with Anmerican bank, When I told him I don't bank there and never had he started asking about my current bank information. I hung up right then and there.
I did the survey it took maybe 6 minutes. I rambled most of the time. Very nice person on the other end. People, get over yourselves. Your phone rang. Whooptidy doo! It is not the end of the world. Did you get a disease because your phone rang. Did it cost you any money? Even if it did, could you not recoup that cost be picking up a quarter in your couch cushion? The phone rang, that is it. I did not know soccer moms and old people were so busy that a phone call would throw off their whole day. And guys, guess what. I did the survey, which means they won't need to call me anymore. Wow. Imagine that.

The National Do No Call list is ONLY for telmarketers that SELL things over the phone, a Marketing Research Company like SMI gathers studys and information for the clients that contract the company in order to understand their clientel better. Each Marketing Research Company has a company Do Not Call list and if the person we call request us to put them on that list then we are more than happy to comply. Thank you!

C Cassaday, do you have a website? if so, it is possible to get your number from what is called a "whois lookup"
call came up on ID as SMI...called it back and rang forever...no one answered
I'm on the Do Not Call list, just updated my entry last month. Junk Call Creeps.
Susan Campbell Nov 07th, 2007
2 missed calls from this number, no name did not answer. I'm in Hawaii so I guess they will stop at nothing.
this dumb bitch tries to call me every other month like clockwork, I have told her many times to never call again, obviously scammers trying to gain confidence through a "survey" ruse. I like to answer and insult her in as many ways as i can before she hangs up... i suggest you do the same... this number is accociated with the black muslim student union of alabama university, I told her last time that I would call Homeland security if she calls again...
FYI - The DONOT CALL list is aimed at telemarketers who are selling something. It does not apply to this outfit because they are selling anything. She asked a few research questions thanked me and that was it. Nothing to get excited over.
Should have included this government web site in my earlier email. Interesting reading and I bet the telemarketers don't even know the rules they're supposed to play by.

This number called on Oct 16, 2007 at about 7:35pm. Got to the phone too late and called back. After several rings a fax tone answered. The 205 area code is in Birmingham, Alabama area. I am in the 561 area code, (Boca Raton, FL)
Sorry folks but if they are not selling any product and only conducting a survey then the do not call list does not apply to them...
Got a call from this number on my caller ID. Didn't recognize, so I didn't answer. Googled the number and found this. I have a private, unlisted number and I'm registered on The Do Not Call list. How did they get my number?!

My husband & myself told this person to remove us from the call list.ALL REQUEST ARE IGNORED FROM PHONE #

I also recieved a call from an SMI my father answered and said that it was a survey we are also on the Do Not Call list
Had two calls from this number. I am also on the no call list and also have an unlisted number.Did not answer. They did not leave message.
Shows unknown name. I am also on the no call list but no one was home. I hope they don't call back.
I was called around 5:30 EDT today, but did not answer. If this is a survey, they have computers that randomly generate phone numbers, which are then dialled manually by their employees. Legitimate surveys are exempt from the Do Not Call list as they are not involved in sales.
I used to do radio ratings surveys so I'm familiar with the business. The company, VNU - Scarborough Research, was completely legitimate and is now connected with Arbitron.
They should always be willing to offer you a number to call to verify their claims, if not, then it could be a scam.
Also watch out for "surveys" that turn into sales calls after asking a few questions. A true survey will never offer anything for sale.
I'm so glad I found this site! I, too, have received multiple calls from this number on my home phone, with no message left. As mentioned by many people here, I also don't answer calls from numbers I don't recognize. The next time they call, I'll pick up (if I'm home) and do as suggested, by the employee of this company--request to be placed on the internal do not call list. All my phone numbers, including cells, are on the gov't's do not call list, but I'm aware that Market Research companies do not fall within those parameters. Still, it's very annoying; I will also call their main number and request to be removed from their calling list. My only fear, though, is sometimes, this puts your number in the 'forefront' of their lists and you get called MORE often!
A shame we have to live like this and be bothered (and incur 'air time' on cell phones) by unsolicited callers! But I'm very glad sites like this exist, for us to 'compare notes', get additional info, and
vent re: the annoyance! : )
"Larry" called wanting to know about my satisfaction with my recent transaction at the Haysland Square Branch, Huntsville AL, of Compass bank. I do not live in Huntsville. He gave me accurate numbers for Compass Security but they do not know this person and have no knowledge as to why he would be calling me at this time of night.
A telemarketer by any other name is still ...
this number called, I didn't answer. However, I did recently close an account with Comerica bank, so it could have been them.
They called my cell, did not leave a message, and did not answer when i called them back.
Called at 8pm on May 18, 2007 on my cell phone. Identified himself as a caller from Comerica Bank in Grand Rapids, MI, but he sounded more like a 12 year old child speaking non-standard english. He asked for my account information and to confirm my phone number. I could sense it was a scam (since Comerica Bank would never call at 8pm!!!), and told him I could not release the information. He immediately hung up the phone. When i called back there was a busy tone.
Julian - thank you for the information. I agree that you need to work what job is available while in school. I appreciate your comments. It is good to know what the object or mission of the calls really is. There are so many reports of scams and people being taken advantage of that I am sure everyone immediately assumes that most unknown calls fall into that category.
I work for strategic metrics. Before you all scream at me. I do this as a part time job. It's really flexible so it's ideal for students such as myself. If I had a better option I'd take it but...
It's not a scam though. It's a marketing research company. We conduct surveys for companies. The purpose is really so that those companies can better cater to their customers. We mostly do surveys for banks and for bell south. For the banks the numbers/names are given to us through the bank (such as comerica) but that's all the information we have. The phone numbers for the phone book survey are randomly generated. In other words we have the area code we're calling and the computer randomly just gives us a number, often they're bad/disconnected numbers. If you don't answer or hang up you're put on a call back list. If you pick up and tell them to put you on the internal do not call list, you shouldn't get anymore calls. The national do not call registry applies to telemarketers which doesn't apply to us because we don't sell anything. Therefore, we're "phone surveyors" not telemarketers. I hope this helps. Oh and if you'd like to speak to someone directly call 205-758-8131
I'm not proud of what I do but some of us have to work crappy jobs to get through school. Sorry.
My number is unlisted and has been on the do not call list for over 2 years. I received a call on May 4, 2007 but did not answer since I did not know who was calling. There was no message left - caller ID simply said Out of Area with the number.
AnotherOne May 07th, 2007
Someone called from this number and I didn't answer. They didn't leave a message. I have been listed on donotcall.gov for nearly 8 months now. Heads will roll if I receive another unsolicited call from these people.
teh_cyphermage May 04th, 2007
didnt answer, she didnt leave a message, ifno about who she is already posted, if she ever finds this she knows the gig is up if someone wants to fight back.
Very Annoyed May 03rd, 2007
This number is from Strategic Metrics, Inc. (a research co.). Their main phone number is 205-758-8131
if anyone wants to call and complain. They have removed my number in the past, but apparently it is back in their database...GRRRR. Oh, their other contact info is on their website http://www.strategicmetrics.com/contact.html. Hope this helps.
I received a call from this number today on my cell, I did not answer it as I too am on the do not call list. Let's make sure all others are smart enough to google it and find this site. Somebody needs to stop this madness!! Has anyone tried to call the University of Alabama, African Students Association and ask why they would be calling out like this?
Marky Mark Apr 26th, 2007
i just got a call from this number and found the same info as previously reported, African Students Assoc. from U. of Alabama. I tried to call it back and it went to a fax machine

My 11 year old child got a call from this number on her cell phone and promptly hung up when she didn't know who it was.
I male said was calling from American Bank, a second time he said Comerica. He argued about suspicious activiy on my bank account and needed to confirm some personal data, I asked for spanish assistance and he hanged up.
i get a call from this company at least once a day, sometimes more. is the do not call registry an elaborate government hoax that does nothing? I have been registered on that list for at least 2 years and it seems it has done nothing to stem the flow of telemarketers
Came home and saw the Caller ID of S M I. I did a Whitepage Reverse look up and it said it was from Tuscalloosa, AL. I too tried to call back, rang 6-8 time and a fax or computer pickedup. I'm ALSO registered on the Do Not Call list. Did the search on GOOGLE and saw this site--glad to report it and hopefully someone will do some THING about it. What? Not sure--sure seems to be a blatant violation of privacy.
The phone # is 205-758-4826 and a young female identified herself as SMI, a market research company. When I asked her how she got my telephone # since I am on the Do Not Call list, she said they "get the numbers randomly" and that "the Do Not Call list does not apply to us, SMI, as we are a market research company". I reiterated and stated, ok - SMI does NOT respect the governmental Do Not Call list is what you mean?! - She basically concurred and I said "well, I'm one of those people that do not want to be disturbed" and she said "Yes, ma'am" in her very southern accent. That's the extent of my phone call with SMI.
Florida Mom Mar 14th, 2007
This is the second time I recieved a call from this place. This time however, the caller ID listed it as SMI
Did not talk to anyone, but the number was listed as Unknown Name.
Didnt leave message. Unable to call the number back for whatever reason.
Upon researching this number on Google, I found that it is located in Tuscaloosa, AL, USA, and can be traced back to the University of Alabama, African Students Association. The name associated with the number is Ahmed Yahya and the email is firstname.lastname@example.org. When I called the number back, I received a FAX machine.
Somebody called my mother-in-law on her cell today, in las vegas, supposedly from Comerica bank in White Lake, Mi. They asked if "he was an adult" with no explanation at all. She tried to call the number back but all it did was beep but not like a fax number .

Caller asked to speak with some unknown person by name. Informed caller that he may not speak with the person because the person is deceased. That eneded the call promptly.
Wanted to let you know, I reported this on yesterday but they called back today. This Call was a survey about phone books ie which ones do I use, Bellsouth, Sunshine Pages, Yellow Pages, etc. I asked how did they get my private, unlisted number and she said they are selected "at random" but I do not understand HOW they got this number to select in the first place.
