Find out about their illegal activities, trying to collect old SOL - STATUTE OF LIMITATION expired debts from clueless people!

Google: "portfolio recovery scam".

Report them to the Better Business Bureau or your State Attorney General - and block their calls:

Google: "phone call blockers" - they can be purchased for little money at eBay

Some call blockers:
• Uniden DECT1288 blocks up to 20 numbers, plus Private and Unknown, with the reject tone, without ringing the phone.
• Panasonic KX-TG106 blocks up to 30 numbers, plus all unidentified callers, with a busy tone, after the phone rings once.
• JF Teck Caller ID with Ring Controller blocks up to 70 numbers, and can be set to always allow up to 100 to ring through.

Whoops .... Calling after 9PM in your time zone breaks the rules. I'm happy Jen found a pleasant and compliant rep. When PRA calls again next week she will have to use USPS Certified like everyone else who is in a rogue collector's gunsights. Verbal cease-comms don't work, nor do air horns, whistles, or other stupid pranks which make you look as bad as the collectors. I would shy from sending a cease-comm via a collector's own web site, as it may be harder to prove delivery.

These people call daily.I do not ever answer, so I have no idea what they want or who they are. Today was the highlight, though. My phone just rang from them. It is Sunday evening, 8:28. I am just not going to answer. If I can't get rid of them with an air horn or threats, it's their time they are wasting and not mine. They always hang up before the machine picks up, so they can just keep dialing. I only answer the phone for those I wish to speak to. I won't be intimidated in my own home, especially by losers who can't get real jobs.

My husband has been receiving calls from this company (different states and different phone numbers); the so-called debt they are attempting to collect is from 1996 - 8 years too late as the statute of limitatons has expired.

If you are also receiving these types of harrassing calls, submit a request on their website and indicate that if they dont stop that you will be contacting the attorney generals office.

Jess: It's a pity you likely won't have a recording of that nasty call, which I think hits a new low for collector behavior. Possibly you could subpoena PRA's recording. That's right, I'm suggesting you take PRA to court with every violation documented. A good consumer attorney would take that on contingency in a heartbeat. I think you could win far more than the usual hush-pay grand for settlement. These thugs need more sunlight.

As to the rest of you receiving misdirected or abusive calls from a third party debt collector, you also may find relief in the provisions of the FDCPA, which regulates bad collector behavior. Learn your rights at FTC-dot-gov.

We received this call today from Portfolio Recovery at 205-423-4020 & they left no message on the answering machine. They hung up immediately. My neighbor Lorraine & her son Guy keep harrassing us with all kind of phone numbers from their cell phones. They are both evil and jealous of everything we do outside and inside. They are both sick
and need help. They can dial any phone numbers on their cell phones and blocked their cell phone numbers so we won't know who is calling. They know how to do it, but we don't. I have heard it from a friend in the past. When I was done cleaning up the garage and they knew I was done cleaning and then they called us immediately. If we go someplace and then came back home, they called us immediately. They are harrassing us and I hope it will come back them for being so heartless and cruel.

Hmmm, yes, student loans are prized by collectors since they are next to impossible to discharge. "Pissed Off" is the only respondent in this entire thread who is doing something proactive and using Federal law to her or his rightful advantage. The only thing left is to send a "cease-desist" notice in print. If this has been done already and the calls continued, that is an easy court victory waiting for this call recipient.

"Jim", "B", "GET REVENGE", and "SOLUTION": Number blocks, misdirection, rick-rolls, and stupid pranks may fool or delay the collector for a while or it may antagonize one into pulling you closer to court. There are smart ways of handling these parasites, most of which involve paper, ink, and your careful study.

"Annoyed": Others here have alluded to this but let's get it right on the table. Portfolio Recovery is AKA Anchor Receivables AND AKA Revenue Discovery Systems. When you have a rap sheet as long as PRA's it helps to have nicknames. Calling twice a day from different numbers is irritating but not illegal, and hardly as abusive as they could get. I've had debt chasers ring six, nine, maybe twelve times a day for weeks.

"handy andy", "Rebekid", and "sage": May I again advise you and other newcomers these forums are strictly for call recipients to share their findings. They are NOT direct open channels to the phone bank boiler rooms we comment upon.

Just for fun, if you are working or living in an environment that you could do this in, answer the phone whenever a suspected telemarketer is on the line. If you hear a real human voice and they start their shpeel, hold a gas charged air-horn to the phone & blast them for a second or two! You can get them from amazon.com for as little as $7.00 for the 1.4oz can or under $30.00 for the 8oz which will last a very long time if used in short bursts. Refill 8oz cans are about $16.00. Free Shipping often available on orders over $25.00!

Even if it's a recording, wait and see if a human takes over the call or if there is an option for them to start recording you, then blast them!

Don't get mad, GET REVENGE!

Had message from "Portfolio Recovery" on my voice mail. Began by saying my name, and stating that if listener weren't me, not to take call. Was obviously recorded, and I didn't listen to all of it before deleting, but have checked some on this outfit, and gotten some detail from a friend with knowledge of them. First, I was divorced several years ago, and my lawyer took care of all details, and there were few debts and all were current. Nothing has ever ensued which could place me on these folks' "list," and their basic operation is buying old, long-written-off debts for ¢'s on the $'s. They autodial many - MANY - #'s simultaneously - and I'm told a live representative on their end will get on-line with someone who has answered on dialing personally. Others, whether answered or not, will go to a recorded spiel, or perhaps present no message or response to answering phone. They do this constantly, and their rep. will try to threaten, cajole, and coax something from those with whom he/she speaks. If successful a couple times a day - say with an elderly person who caves-in or believes threats - they make money, with just a fraction of #'s reached versus dialed. Basically all of their files are for items long beyond statute of limitations. In my case, I think some sort of minor item may have "slipped between the cracks" due to something my attorney misses, mis-mailed or such. If so, and whatever, would be minor and WAY past any period of legitimacy. Just ignore these weasels who are just using modern technology to pester thousands of people.

These people would ring my cel phone 3 times a day and never leave a message. Just one ring and hang up. Maybe it was a transfer from some other number. Anyway, it took major effort to get them to stop. I had to go up two levels in the organization, send them a chart documenting the calls, and mention law suit for harassment.

Call your local phone company to see if they have a service called "Call Intercept".. there is a monthly charge to have this service. With "Call Intercept", you can block any number in the United States. I have "Call Intercept" on my home phone thru Verizon and I am able to block 25 numbers. The person calling your number will get a recording saying "THE PERSON YOU ARE CALLING DOES NOT ACCEPT CALLS FROM THIS NUMBER, GOOD BYE." It's GREAT blocking Portfolio Recovery Associates from calling all day from different numbers. I am hoping that Verizon will extend call count from 25 to 50 numbers.

OK, this was so easy. Yes, they are a collection agency. just call their 800 number that a kind person posted below. Act really dumb and tell them you get calls for collections. When they say who they are trying to call (your name), act like you got your phone number about a year ago and say that you get occasional calls for (mispronounce your name). Apologize for your call, and POOF!!!!! You are off their list! Yay! They apolgize for disturbing you, and it's DONE!! I've done this with other collectors, and it works. Good Luck, Everyone!

They left voice mail telling me to call 1-800-860-0644, which is Portfolio Recovery Associates, LLC, valid company. After many days of calls, and after researching the company online and through BBB, I reluctantly called them. Told them they had wrong person, quit calling. They refused to take my number off the call list unless I gave some personal information. I reluctantly gave DOB and they agreed they had been calling wrong person. No apology and could give no explanation as to how they decided to call my number. (I have common name.)

Caller ID said Anchor Receivab~~. I picked up and got a recorded voice asking me to call a number back.. Promptly added it to my call block list. Was hoping it was going to be a person on the other end since I don't owe anyone and was going to have fun chewing someone out. Oh well, I'll just wait for the next one and the next one, etc. etc.
Bunch of Morons if they think anyone in their right mind is going to return a call to a recorded messages phone number??????

They are scam artists if you can call them that. They call here to collect a debt that someone else owes. When you tell them you are not that person, they call you a liar and say "I know who you are." and when I tell them they don't have a clue and ask them who they are, they hang up. Are they afraid that they will get sued for these bogus calls? Well, I will if I find out what I need to know on them.

Isn't that against the law for a business to say they are someone they are not? These idiots are looking for someone that never has lived at our address and got our number somehow. They called us liars when we informed them they have the wrong number. They call from 6:30 am to 11:40 pm several times a day. NEVER EVER leave a message on our machine. We have reported them, but we will have to put up with the early and late calls until something is done with them I guess. Ridicules that we have to put up with it.

This number came up on my phone as Anchor Receivab. I keep a list of unwanted numbers and search any new unknown numbers. This number has also came up as Portfolio Recovery earlier in my list. I guess they try putting different ID on if you don't answer one ID. They are an outfit that buys up old debts for a couple of cents on the dollar and then try and hound the hell out of you to try and get the full amount.

This is a company based in Boca Raton, FL.

Aka 'Anchor's "fast cash" ("A/R") funding program,' this company is a funding alternative to the debt financing available for small businesses by U.S. banks. Anchor's program establishes an unlimited A/R funding line of credit for its small business clients by purchasing its clients' current A/R's and providing an immediate cash advance to support the businesses' working capital needs. Anchor relies on the credit quality of the A/R itself and not the financial condition of the business. Anchor's "fast cash" A/R program will assist mortgage firms and banks in restructuring and replacing home equity lines of credit which are used to fund their clients' small businesses.
