More on "DEBT FREE" -- PAETEC of New Canaan. CT (DEBT FREE's provider) is a major VoIP provider, providing T1 (and up) High Speed Internet Access, Voice (SIP/LD/Local/VoIP/POTS) ... and since their inception, spam in your INBOX. They gamed the anti-spam community for nearly a year, while pumping out more and more crap. They use hospitals and other medical establishment customers to "hide behind", and have for years, now.

Just where these 203-652-4022 calls are from -- THEY could tell Law Enforcement and the Connecticut courts. Any takers? With the right time and resources, somebody could likely field a class action suit against both "DEBT FREE" and PAETEC (for knowingly supporting fraud, despite being a "common carrier"). With all the hospitality industry and medical community customers, they should have deep pockets, even in this economy.

aka US LEC, apparently aka (another spamhoster) McLeodUSA

"DEBT FREE" called TWICE within minutes, with a recorded intro. Same number (203) 652-4022 in the Caller-ID. First call, id'd as "DEBT FREE". Second call id'd as "UNKNOWN CALLER".

I hit a 3 on the first one. It immediately hung up. I hit a 1 on the 2nd (both times, interrupting the recording). The guy that answered hung up as soon as he discovered I wasn't a pidgeon. I can't count the number of times I've been "removed from their list". I have suspected this as an ID-Theft ring for a long time. Area code 203 is a telephone area code that covers the southwestern part of Connecticut, but with number portability, it MIGHT actually be in New Canaan. See "BBB Imposters" postings about this same number. Also see reports of credit card scams http://www.telefenua.com/2008/12/nv-energy-warns-of-telephone-credit-card-scam/ from this number.

Scam Alert: BBB Imposters Calling Local Consumers
12/4/2008

Better Business Bureau of Southern Arizona is warning local consumers about a call coming from New Canaan, Connecticut claiming to be the BBB.

Two Tucson residents received a call from 203-652-4022. In both cases the caller identified herself as Betty with the BBB, but caller ID listed the call as coming from “Debt Free.” While there are several business listings across the country for companies named Debt Free, BBB is still working to tie this number to a legitimate business in Connecticut.

One consumer tells BBB that “Betty” offered to drastically lower her mortgage rates and in the other call she promised to cut credit card debt by at least 50 percent. BBB staff called the number above multiple times only to get a recording that instructs callers to press one in order to be removed from the company’s call list.

BBB reminds consumers never to provide personal or financial information to callers you don’t know. If you receive this or a similar call, get as much information as you can from the caller, don’t divulge any personal information and report it to your BBB by calling 520-888-5353 or emailing info@tucson.bbb.org.
