It turns out that this number is one in a series being used by someone who is using the caller ID of "Loyola University". Every other day or so, the caller uses a different number, different slightly from those used before.

I have contacted the university; if they can do anything about it is anyone's guess. White Pages shows that the number is being run under Twtelecom, which is one of the top three companies of its sort in the USA. I have written a letter to the general manager of the Louisiana operations, to tell him that this looks like a spam/scam operation -- and would he please find a way to put a stop to it?

202-861-5879: ID said Wireless Caller. Checked the number; from Maryland. Now for the ultimate in weird. 504-861-5879. Same phone number, different area code.Calls hit my landline phone at exactly 7:46 PM last night. The 202 call did not ring. The 504 number rang 50X before stopping. These calls are becoming very strange.

Update: This number with the area code of 202 also appeared exactly the same in a phone call to me from area 504. Both calls from each area code hit my phone (according to the missed call log) at exactly the same time last night, 7:46 PM. The call from area code 504 rang 50X before it stopped. The 504 call also had a false ID of "Loyola University". The real Loyola University if Baltimore, MD, said that it would have its Office of Technology Services check to ensure that their number hadn't been compromised.

The call from 504 was identified as coming from an unlisted landline in Kenner, Louisiana. Whoever is playing these games seems to take delight in attacking me. Who could the hacker be? I hope that Loyola in Maryland can track him down, and have the law throw the book at him.

Strange that your bogus call hit at 7:58 PM. I was hit with a bogus call at 7:46 PM 13 November 2012. This looks like several sources are doing scattershot calling at about the same time. In fact, according to my Caller ID, I had two calls hit at that exact same time, one from 202-505-5383, the other from 504-861-5879! This is getting weirder and weirder! Now, to go report both calls and others to the FCC and the FTC!
