I never answer anonymous toll-free calls. Calling the number back, it said, "Thanks for calling Capital One. Please say or enter your 16-digit card number." I have never had a Capital One card. Next time they call I'm going to answer and see what I can learn and maybe see how confused I can get them!
Called the number back, and an Indian (Hindu-type) sounding man asked me for my Capital One card number. When I said I didn't have a Capital One card, he asked, "How may I help you today?" I asked, "Why are you calling my number?" Then he asked, "What is your phone number?" and at that point I hung up.
Got to be a scam.
This is United Parcel Service's shipping department. They called because I was expecting a package (I knew about it beforehand). Legitimate number, legitimate call.
My experience is very similar to tonya's. We recently got a new phone number (4-6 months ago), and started receiving a lot of calls for the previous holder of the number. Most callers either used a real person, or offered an automated option to report the wrong number, and none of them bothered us again. Only NCO Financial Services offers no ready way to tell them they have a wrong number. They are bill collectors. They expect me to write down a reference number, then call them back at the same toll-free number. I read some horror stories about NCO on various web sites, including scary tales from those who were simply trying to report a wrong number. Many advised you to simply hang up on them, so that is what I'm doing. When I tried to visit NCO's web site, looking for an online contact form or email link, I couldn't connect to it. We have never had any dealings with these people, certainly nothing through the snail-mail or otherwise on paper, so their abuse of my phone number is reprehensible ... but I'm hesitant to call their number because based on what I've read about them, I don't trust them.
No sound on other end. Repeated "hello" from me elicited nothing. Suspected automated dialler trolling for answered numbers.
No sound. Suspect computer auto-dialer looking to see when someone is home.
Life-insurance commercial.
Possible office noises in background, but nobody spoke after repeated "hello" from me. Unpublished number.
Called at 9:14 this AM. Same song and dance - foghorn, answer 10 questions, cruise to Bahamas, automated opinion poll. Didn't bother myself to answer their questions.
They call me every day, and every day I don't answer. I initially found them using a Google search on the number (which led me to whocalled.us!) Known as Etech, Inc. or Effective Teleservices Incorporated, they clearly aren't trying to hide their identity, which is more than I can say for most of the mysterious spam calls I get.
Called several times during past week. I don't answer, so I have nothing more to report, but looks like a telemarketer to me.
Reports on other web sites similar to Who Called Us report this so-called collection agency as a scammer. I did not call them back, and won't. Legitimate collection agencies (if indeed such things exist) will call using a real person, or if they're using a prerecorded message, at least mention who they're looking for by name. In my opinion, there is only one proper response to anonymous robo-calls that provide no information about what they want: Hang up, and do *not* call them back!
