Yet another number for Portfolio (aka The Creepers). Even though the 'debt' is not valid, they still call almost every day using numbers from all over the US. If the caller id shows a city name and state abbreviation - don't bother answering. Just block the latest number if possible (we have completely filled our phone's blocked number capability).

They have been calling for over 2 years. Sometimes 4-6 times a day. they have approx 200+ telephone numbers that they use. The first lady I talked to told me that "this call may be recorded" My answer was "GOOD! I Hope So!"
I asked her for her number and the Account # she was calling about. The number she gave me was 2 numbers short. Eventually, a "supervisor" jumped in. I explained to the Idiot that Portfolio Recovery Services was contacted by my Lawyer 2 years ago and they were told NOT to call me. SPECIFICALLY because I had already been officially served and this case had already been filed whit what ever legal beagle Portfolio Recovery Service hired to do so. The Idiot says, "Well! Who's Your Lawyer?" My reply was, you already know who my lawyer is, it a matter of record. Look It Up In Your Computers, Check Your Own Records. I then repeated "Do NOT Call This Number Ever Again. The Idiot says "No! Send Us A Letter" Obviously too stupid to understand that they had already been contacted by my lawyer with a cease & desist letter, as in DO NOT CALL. So, they will be getting a registered return receipt letter including copies of the letters that's going to the Secretary Of State & The Attorney General of That State.

I got this call today from 616-613-2227. the caller ID said unauthorized.
This is a new one, never got that ID before. I didn't answer, just picked the phone up and hung it back up. Its the SOS, I have gotten to many to count. Credit card BS, alarm system BS and many more. I have filed complaints with the FTC and FCC trying to get them to enforce the do not call registry, just a waste of time. They are not going to do a damn thing about this. They email me back saying that I can sue them in local court. How can you sue someone when you have any idea who they are? One day, someone will figure out how to put a stop to these low life scum, the DNC registry is sure not the answer because our government is not going to do anything to help stop them from calling. I saw a article about this in the AARP paper. It said to go to nomorobo.com. I did but my land line carrier is Windstream and they do not have simultaneous ringing service. If anyone has the answer to this telemarketer problem, please let the rest of us know.

Phone call starts out the same, "Because of your excellent payment history in the last six months..." This call was received at 7:45 AM in the morning. I specifically have a do not call message on this phone number. I pressed 9 to speak to someone and when I asked for their company information they hung up. I put the do not call message on my line specifically because of this company and it helped for about a month, but they are back.

I don't have caller ID and the message doesn't leave a number, just ends after saying to press 1. However, the message begins the same way described by many here. it's already in progress and says something about billing cycle then says "Again this is your final notice as it relates to the financial stimulus"
I dialed the number Luba posted and asked for Steve Hale. Here's how it went
616-364-8761 (ASKING FOR STEVE) (F) I DON'T KNOW HOW. I HAVE TO CHECK. MAY I ASK WHO'S CALLING. HE'S THE OWNER SO HE'S GONNA WANNA KNOW WHOS CALLING.
(me) my name is crosby
(f) UHM STEVE IS NOT IN THE OFFICE
(me) please leave him a message. the message is. this is your first, middle, and last notice to stop calling my message and fax line. my name is crosby and my line is XXX XXX XXXX. do you have the message?
(f) YES BUT WHAT IS THE number CALLING YOU BECAUSE ITS NOT US
(me) the number calling me is leaving a partial message saying it's my final notice about the financial stimulus. are you claiming that he is not responsible for these calls?
(f) I AM STATING THAT I NEED THE ACTUAL TELEPHONE NUMBER THAT IS CALLING YOU IN ORDER TO MAKE THEM STOP AND I'M TELLING YOU WE ARE NOT MAKING THE CALLS
(me) well... if you have the power to make them stop... then it would seem clear you are connected with them. I do not have caller ID. I can't give you the number which dialed me. I had to go online and search the message being left to find out who is behind it. all roads seem to lead to Steve Hale. I am not asking anything more than for you to stop calling the number I gave which is the message and fax line for crosby, that's me. if you are related with many telemarketing agencies making these calls, then alert all of them.
(f) WE ARE A TELEPHONE COMPANY, WE SELL TELEPHONE NUMBERS THE ONLY WAY I CAN MAKE THEM STOP CALLING YOUR NUMBER IS TO HAVE THE number CALLING YOU

Just for a call from 616-613-2227, Bank Card Services, automated to reduce rate from jonathon, live agent came on the line named Jonah, I asked for the name of his company, he told me visa/MasterCard. I asked again for the name of yours company that's working with visa/MasterCard. He hung up on me. Tried to call back, was on hold and call disconnected. This is a scam. I am on Do Not Call List and have been calls from these people daily, multiple times a day. Reporting this number again to Attorney Gerneral.

October 3rd, 2013 Glenn FL

Just as you suspect, these people are thieves trying to get your card numbers so they can steal you blind. Funny that the NSA can tap your phone calls to grandma but they can't and wont do a damned thing about people who steal millions and millions from people who can't afford it.

Tried to report them today and guess what - the government is shut down to prevent the law from being carried out.

Why bother?

This company has been calling me almost every day for a few years. I picked up the phone and talked to them a few years ago. Seems that they want to collect on an old Discover card debt. I have never had a Discover card and told them so. They asked for my social security #, but no way was I giving that. They asked for the last four digits, I wouldn't give them that but told them if they would give me the last 4 of the one they had, I would verify that it was mine. Gee, they don't seem to trust me with that information either. I figured they Googled a name like mine and called all that was listed. I did tell them that if they did have anything that was mine, then send me proof of the debt in the mail (as they are required by law). Of course, nothing has arrived. It is easier to keep harrassing people on the phone. The way it plays out is they will try to convince you to pay something on the debt and it will go away. But, once you give them a dime, the whole debt is yours and now collectable...even if it was an out of date uncollectable debt. Any payment reinstates the debt

September 18th, 2013 DMG NJ

I get these calls on my home phone while I am at work, or in the evenings. I've called the number back following their prompt to remove my number... to no avail, they still call. I've followed the prompt to speak with a Rep... and the system tells me they are all busy at this time & requests I leave a voicemail.

I'm on the Nat'l. & my State's Do Not Call Registries. I will be filing yet another complaint online w/the FCC.

Portfolio Recovery Solution have been using 757-961-6544 and many other number to call ad try to have me pay a debt for a loan my husband got back in the 1990s and defaulted on up in Chicago. I met him in 2010 and we got married now in 2013 they keep calling me to pay off the debt. I have explained my husband had a heart attack and is disabled and cannot work and will not be paying off the debt and it is not my debt so I have no intention of paying it but they keep calling. Each time I tell them I cannot have them calling me because I am at my job they push and push until I hang up. Then they call back with a new number. "How many numbers do they have? At least 47 that I know of."

This crap should in and of itself be outright illegal, this is just short of blatant telephone harassment. If these calls were not intended to be deceptive, Portfolio would use their own name on the Caller ID. Nothing requires you to answer their repetitive calls, and they well know it, hence the electronic trickery.

Calls from card services offering to lower my credit card rates. I have no credit cards so how can they lower my rates? When I ask them this, they hang up on me. I ask to be removed from their call list or call the number back and press 1 to be removed. I keep a record in a spreadsheet in my computer. They never call back from that specific phone number but use a different one. Computer initiated calls are supposed to be illegal so how are they getting away with it. Some of the numbers I call back tell me the number I called is no longer in service. Why would the phone company let someone make calls and not have a record of the number being used? The phone companies are being cheated out of money and should stop this if the government won't.

Because I am sooooo tired of getting these calls, I answered to tell them to quit calling as I am on the no call registry. I asked what the call was about and she said lowering interest rates on my credit cards. So I said, you have information on all my credit cards and she said yes. I asked where she got the information and she said she gets paid $12 an hour to do this job. And I then asked why the credit card companies didn't offer these lower rates. She then said, "You don't know what you're talking about." I responded, you don't know what you're talking about and shouted "quit calling me; I'm on the no call list!" And then she stated, "now I'm going to use your credit cards bitch!" I called the FTC and reported the call.

O.K. This is Portfolio Recovery Services' modus operandi:

I moved to Colorado 9 years ago from another state. Upon moving here, I got my current phone number. Almost immediately I started getting calls for an "Angela Braxton" from a collection agency. During 2004 and 2005, I called Portfolio Recovery Services (PRS) numerous times to let them know that I'm not Angela Braxton and have no idea who she is. PRS ignored my pleas to stop calling and kept calling me anyway, sometimes day and night.

Finally, I got the feature from Qwest (now CenturyLink) that allows a person to block 25 numbers. Over the next few years, I kept blocking numbers from PRS. As you poor guys know, PRS will then start calling from a different number. Eventually, I ran out of blocking possibilities. So I cleaned out all those 25 blocked numbers and started afresh. As usual, I continue to get calls from PRS asking for Angela Braxton. I keep blocking the new numbers PRS uses to call its "victims."

At 8:46 this morning I got another call from PRS which went to messages. In the meantime I decided to enjoy this constant harassment and have a little fun at their expense. I decided, "O.K., I'll pretend to be Angela Braxton" and returned their call claiming to be Angela Braxton.

They wanted to know if my address is in Aurora. It is not, and so I said so. On second thought, I should have said "Yes." PRS' second question was about my social security number, giving the last 4 digits of what Angela's social security number is supposed to be. Again, I said that was not my SS number, which is true.

And then I blew it big time. They started asking other questions. I said I could not help them because I was not the Angela Braxton they were looking for. When they started to ask for information about me, I said "You have no idea who I am, where I live, what my SS number is. You know nothing about me, so just try to go after me for whatever you want!"

Now, maybe if I've planted some good ideas in those of you who might be more creative than I am, go to it! Let's have a little fun and help stop this nonsense. Maybe if everyone pitched in and shared their experiences here as to what they tried and how successful their efforts were, we might hit on an idea or two that will make this type of harassment come to a screeching halt!

Bon voyage!

They call her everyday and its just really rude and i would like this to stop but sadly we have no way of stopping.

We are in a war against these trash bags to gain control of our communications privacy. In the USA, the laws were changed in about 2006, and that opened the floodgates for these "monsters" to discover how to circumvent the law, and inundate us with junk phone calls. Vote out of office the scalawags who voted for the law changes in 2006, and vote into office people who will respect and honestly represent "we the people".

June 27th, 2013 Densha Otoko SD

Some great spoof names are: Mai Wang, Big Phat Dik, Mitch Komestainne. Another fun ploy is to answer the phone as (Insert name of choice) Law Offices. Mirroring their language is also kind of fun. Listen to them and repeat what they are saying as they say it. Telling them that you are recording their call is also fun. Maybe answer the phone using the name of a local television station...or a church name that you make up.

June 27th, 2013 Densha Otoko SD

When someone shows up as unlisted, private, or whatever, I do the following: I answer the phone in either Japanese or Korean. I use the name of any J-Pop/K-Pop singer I can find. One time I answered as Akihito, who is the Emperor of Japan. I put it this way: It is my phone and I will talk to the people I choose to talk to, not some scumbag trying to collect timed-out debts that they buy for pennies on the dollar. I have also answered in English as "Hugh Jorgan" (think about it). For the record, they use multiple phone numbers, none of which is their number. It is fun to just screw with them. It wastes their time, which cuts into their commissions. If you speak a foreign language, use a name in that corresponds to that language. Go to Google Translate and type in the most vile English sentence you can think of...then push translate into the language of your choice. I have also been known to just utter a continuous series of insults and profanities. These people are sharks...and they will never take their claim to court...so, abuse them as much as they are abusing others.

In order to avoid these calls, I give my MagicJack phone number, which is connected to a ipod, to any possible company that would feed my contact info into a credit profile. Number keeps calling a non listed #. What I know is if you answer the phone, you have automatically started whatever debt from the beginning. I do not owe anyone. But I do not plan to help weird callers harass me either over someone else's bill because I have their #. Advice.. do not answer calls from #s you do not know who it is. Once upon a time, I had a bill that the insurance company failed to pay to a hospital. I did not know because I never received a bill stating that. One day, I had a call from a man that spoke to me about that outstanding bill. He started yelling over the phone to me and informed me he was on the way to my house to collect and I BETTER HAVE IT. It freaked me out so bad.. I called back to the hospital to speak to the Administrator. Informed them of the call. She told me it was not the first complaint she had about it. She said she would call me back in a few minutes and for me to call the police if anyone showed up. Well no one showed but she did call me back and apologized to the fact that a X employee had taken debt files and was calling people for outstanding funds .. she did ask me to describe his voice and it was exactly as others that described him to be. So see.. you just never know about these things.

WhyMeLord...I used to get calls about a bill that was for my late mother from a different collection agency. No amount of telling the fools that she was deceased 30 yrs ago helped. I finally gave them a change of address...the street location of the cemetery where she is interred and the unit (plot) number along with the phone number of the cemetery office. That stopped them. Plus I had a good chuckle imagining the reaction of the person who answered the phone at the cemetery and what he said to the PRA pest who called.

I get calls for my dad (been dead for near 40 years) and finally, in frustration, asked them to produce supporting documents. Most never respond but a few have sent doctored documents that I turn over to the USPS postal inspectors (I keep the envelopes). It's called mail fraud BTW and the postal inspector really get off running these down.

If you can get an address send them a certified letter requesting the supporting documents. 99% of the time they don't have them and can't produce them. Ergo you're off the hook.

It's Portfolio Recovery calling...a very nasty collection agency. They called me today...about a bill from 1998! Evil, vile and scumbag creatures. Simply tell them that the phone you are on is a company phone and that no personal calls are allowed. They'll tell you that the call is being recorded, so, turn the tables on them: tell them that YOU are recording the call, have proof that you have told them not to call your company phone and not to call again. By the way, be very careful in what you say: if you admit that the bill is yours or make any statement concerning the bill, the clock could reset and you could be liable for the long, LONG ago bill. Remember...these are vile, contemptible and nasty vermin. Treat them as something you'd scrape off the bottom of your shoe after a stroll through a dog-park.

"Polio" Recovery: they call all the time! They ask "by my first name?", I say "why?" They say "What do you mean why?" I say "you called me?" They say "Is this name?" I say "why?" They say "I have an important message!" I say "who are you?" They are so stupid that say "their name." I say "who do you represent?" They either say, "I'll call back!" ( sometimes I say I'll be waiting for you tomorrow) or if they say "I'm with Portfolio Recovery!" If they say "I'm with Portfolio Recovery!" I say "Polio Recovery?" They say "no, Portfolio Recovery!" (now they are pissed) I say "why would anyone want to talk to Portfolio Recovery" and hang up! Sometimes they call the next day, sometimes they don't call for a few days. I guess that they are keeping a record on me? Try this! This pisses them off! I'm retired, I wait for them everyday! :-)

I got a call on 12/7/2012 @ 3:50 pm.
The guy asked for my mom, he sounded country. I assumed it was a person in Florida, possibly someone we knew because the area code there is 628. I guess I was wrong. He said he'd call back when I told him she wasn't home. He's an awful debt collector, because he sounded like a normal guy and kind of distracted/flustered or what have you. I don't know. Annoying though.

To Ash:

Don't think it's over. Once one company stops calling you, they'll sell the debt to another company and it will start all over again.

December 6th, 2012 Ash OH

I actually called the Tennessee number back. I've gotten calls from their Virginia and Tennessee offices. As the debt is actually not mine, i explained to Nancy that I've had this phone number three days and do not have any outstanding debts. She thanked me for my time and marked me as a wrong number. If only the other collection agencies calling me for this guy would follow suit...

Rude ass dude on the line trying to collect from me. He was trying to get my new address and bank info, I never would have stopped paying if the cc didn't change terms and ruin my 700+ credit score, too bad for them.

If the call you get is a recorded message you can file a complaint with the National Do Not Call Registry whether you have registered there or not. They will accept the complaint.

November 6th, 2012 maidensolo OK

I have filed a complaint with the National Do Not Call Registry. I suggest you do the same. These idiots can call up to 3 times a day and as late as 9 pm. Since it is a recorded message the Do Not Call people pay more attention to it. Apparently recorded messages are really bad and you can get them stopped. From the info above in the list of numbers it looks like they just get another number and continue with their business.

I constantly get calls from this number and have for 2 years since I have obtained my current phone number. (Portfolio Recovery)I have advised them each time they have the wrong number-makes no difference. They advise the debt is from 1998. Apparently, I was lucky enough to get this person's old number. So, the last time they called, I advised them I would pay the debt when hell froze over and to get back with me then. I have no idea who the person is they are attempting to contact and most of the reps who called have stated along the line of: lying about your identity will not make your debt go away. Can we expect a payment today? Ugh!!

Anna, PRA doesn't care ''who is paying and who they are calling''. Those collection reps are all competing for commissions and bonus ''spiffs'', as their pit bosses hound them to meet some periodic performance goal. You need to stop negotiating on the phone where they want you and get on a paper trail where they don't.

You can dispute PRA's claim any time, but this is best done within 30 days of its first dunning letter. Over two years ago in this thread I discussed setting contact restrictions. Furthermore, anyone at your workplace can take away their permission to call for you there. Keep records of any action they've taken and anything said. You can turn evidence of FDCPA violations against them in a private lawsuit when you're ready.

Hatter, the brief advice: Document all calls, send PRA a written ''cease communication'' notice via USPS Certified with return card, and sue for relief if your rights are denied.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Whether you are called a debtor or some collector thinks you can flush one out, you have rights and options. Many are simple to exercise if you only learn how. You are granted control of how you are contacted, the right to dispute debt claims, and the means to sue violators at low cost. The FTC and the CFPB can start you on your homework. See also if your state laws grant additional or stronger rights.

October 25th, 2012 Resident47 RI

Jen, could you be bothered to read the first sentence of my comment right behind yours? AGAIN .... Debt collectors do not bother with the DNC registry because THEY ARE EXEMPT as non-sales callers!

I would suggest that you quit trying to negotiate verbally and slap on a written cease-comm, as I have discussed here long ago and detailed in this other thread:

(8773052082) whocalled.us

Trying to collect what has already been paid misrepresents the amount and/or character of the debt in dispute. This gives you a FDCPA cause of action which you should be happy to exercise if PRA ignores your Cert-Mailed ''shut up''. If you're sued long past your Statute of Limitations you can spank 'em even harder. You have leverage! Use it when the time is ripe.

October 24th, 2012 Jen L CA

The problem is that they are not a legit debt collector. They are trying to collect a debt that I paid in 1998. I have told them this. There is no debt to collect. It is past the time period in which it could be collected if it were a legitimate debt. They are trying to defraud me by pretending that the debt is valid and I have repeatedly informed them that I have already looked up their company and am aware that their collection efforts are fraudulent in cases other than mine.

They don't honor the DNC list because they are liars.

I have told them numerous times to not call me at work, and they continue to do so. The bill they are calling about is being paid off, and they have been told this but different people from their company continue to call. They have been told to call me at home and they use different numbers to continue to call me at work. I come to work and see they have called well past my business hours. They always ask who they are calling and I answer you called me so you should know who you are calling, they demand to know who they are talking to and I tell them before calling someone they should found out who they are calling and that it looks like they were not trained properly to do their job. They want to get nasty, I get nasty right back. I have told them numerous times if they looked at their records they see that I am paying my debt, but not sure if they qualified to use a computer. I put them on speaker phone and was told to take them off speaker phone, I tell them we are recording them and they hang up. We have even given the phone to a co-workers 2 year old who banged the phone around for awhile and another co worker's dog who barks at the phone. They need to check to see who is paying and who they are calling.

Portofolio Recovery Associates refuse to stop calling me even a day after making the payments asking me if I want to go ahead and pay it off. I kept telling htem, I am sticking to what I told them - I will call them myself on the 3rd of each month to pay down in installments of 100 myself for next five months. They still will not stop calling. Harassing me all the time to the point I stop answering their calls and call them myself on 3rd each month to pay the balance down.

Del, ''PRA does not respect the Do Not Call list'' because it does not need to. The federal Do-Not-Call registry exists to help enforce the Telemarketing Sales Rule. Please note the operative term ''marketing''. A debt collector is not a sales person. Here are the DNC service terms you were supposed to review at registration time:

Q&A: The National Do Not Call Registry
www.ftc.gov

Over the past two years in this thread I have discussed the laws which *do* apply several times. I'm not repeating myself just for you. The FCC, by the way, has almost no jurisdiction in this matter. The FTC has been managing collector regulation from the start, and the CFPB staff may get around to helping once they finish unpacking their moving crates.
