Make it a point to know your states statue of limitation law on collecting bad debt. Had a debt collector call and try to collect a debt from my ex from 2003. When I explained my states statute is 3 yrs and they were trying to collect a debt they bought from 10 yrs late they got mad and hung up. Never heard from them again.

I believe this is the debt collector for Lowe's credit card services. I did not pay a $12.56 charge from Feb.2012. Did not even realize my husband had used the card and by last week May 2012. I owed $64.00 in fees. UGH.......... yes Lowe's did call me on my cell phone just figured it was a promotional call. IF these agencies would leave a full detailed voice mail msg. Most people would just go online and pay what they owed. Now because I feel put out and a little angry I will be canceling my Lowe's card, because I am a little petty and that's how I roll :)

Rec'd call tonight, (02/06/2012) asked if I were Joyce....said speaking and then they asked for my social security number...I have no ideal who these people are...did not give my social out...Who is this CBCS????
Have no outstanding debts...

January 12th, 2012 Jeff Ervin

Got my 1st cellphone in 8 years back in July 2010. Within a few days of
receiving this new cell phone I began receiving frequent calls from 800-947-2987
(appears to belong to a collection agency named CBCS). They originally left me
voice-mails claiming they had information they believed I was unaware of and
that unless they received a call back from me by the end of the business day
they would be forced to make a decision without my input. They did not share any
info other than that, and they never share the company they are representing.
From this I concluded that they had nothing of interest to me and I have never
called them back nor will I ever take their call. My assumption is that they are
a collection agency trying to reach whomever it was that had my cell# before it
was assigned to me. Every phone number in my household is on the national do not call list.
Following is their company info:
CBCS Debt Collection Agency
PO BOX 1810
Partners (as of 2006)
President: Larry S Ebert
Sec/Tres: Dirk M Cantrell
(Listed number: 614-222-5414)
Vice Pres: Brian Striker
Director: William H Price
The busniess is registered at:
236 E Town St, Columbus, Ohio 43215
Phone: 412-503-4002 (although they use many numbers similar to this one)

CBCS, as reported in the threads linked to the Caller ID references above, is a debt collection agency. The DNC registry is for telemarketers, meaning sales, meaning all debt collectors are exempt. Your complaints were most likely misdirected.

Attorneys general and the FTC are valid complaint venues which help the public at large. But understand that you must confront collection agencies directly if you object to their ignorance of your privacy and consumer rights. You must also learn and comprehend those rights fully before you start charging ''harassment'' and ''fraud'' where there is none.

Learn how to exercise your FDCPA rights as an alleged debtor at FTC-dot-gov. See also your state laws for additional support.

January 4th, 2012 Dela MO

My number is on the DNC registry so I don't talk to strangers from area codes not my own. I filed a complaint with the FCC.gov website for wireless harassment. I recommend that everyone who gets telemarketing calls on personal cell phones to STOP these jerks (they phish and steal ANY phone numbers and don't distinguish between landline and cell phone numbers).
The FCC will investigate and fine them. Keep reporting them!

This number 1-800-281-9642 called me today at 9:53 am. They also called me the other day, and two times before that. I picked up the phone the other day, and the woman kept asking for personal information. I kept asking her why are you calling me, she mentioned something about the LRT, and I said, I dont drive. Then she asked for my personal information, and I asked her what was it about, and she hung up on me. Then the call again today.

Why would they be calling me again, after I told them I dont drive.

Several years ago, I found a charge-off on my credit report. It was a big surprise to me (I had never received a collections call), so I called the company listed (the company that “bought” the debt) to find out what it was. The charge was for a telephone (landline) that someone had opened in my honor and then never paid the bill. The amount was less than $500, so I decided to pay it off just to get rid of it.

I told the company representative that in order for me to pay the bill, he’d have to send me copies of the phone bills so that I could determine who had done this to me and deal with them appropriately (I didn’t elaborate on what that meant). He said he couldn’t do that, so I told him I’d get back to him.

I called the telephone company and learned that, to open an account in my name, a person needed my Social Security Number. The phone company was unable to find a record of the “bad” account or find any problems with the five “good” telephone accounts (four landlines and a cell phone) that I had.

I called the collections company again to ask for copies of the phone bill. They said “no,” but claimed to be removing the charge from my credit reports. I didn’t realize at the time that I had asked them to PROVE that they owned the debt, something they apparently couldn’t do.

Just to be safe, I sent registered letters to the credit bureaus explaining the situation. They all answered back in writing stating that the charge had been removed. (I still have all of the letters and delivery receipts.)

Several months later, there was a class-action lawsuit against the Ameritech (baby bell) Company (Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio) to recover damages for customers who had the same thing happen to them. I guess quite a few people had phantom phones installed in their names. It turns out, it was an inside job.

(Even though I wasn’t able to find out WHO did that to me, because for a telephone the account number is usually the phone number, I was able to determine where the phone was located. I didn’t pursue it any further, though.)

February 12th, 2011 Rob NY

I have had problems with this company before. They pull up a copy of your credit report. Take a company name (usually a phone bill), an address that is there, and put a reachable dollar amount (usually a few hundred dollars). They then put it on your credit report. They are a fraudulent company. They do this so people will hear familiar items (in my case it was a bellsouth bill at an address my wife lived at before we were married that my name was never on) and simply pay the bill to get it off the credit report. As far as I know there is nothing you can do about it to get it off your report except pay it, which I will not do. I simply do not answer numbers I do not recognize. If they start harassing you, simply block their number.

They do not pull your credit report. Persons or business cannot pull your credit report without your permission. It can be given when you sign up for other services and it is written in your disclosure statements as to who share your information

Bob, there are many comments in this thread from people who have already tried to "work with them", and the reps will not listen to or obey any verbal cease-comm. This is arguably the most common problem across the collections industry. "I think more often than not" comments like yours are made by employees.

The smarter response is to stay off the phone, where the collector can best manipulate people. Move the dispute to a paper trail and the agency cannot escape the regulators or private lawsuits.

All: If you are receiving repeated, misdirected, and/or abusive calls from a third party debt collector, you may find relief in the provisions of the FDCPA, the Federal law which regulates collector behavior and provides you simple tools for your own defense. It grants you control of how you are contacted, and collectors can be sued for their crimes. Learn your rights and first response tactics at FTC-dot-gov. See also your state laws for additional support.

P.S. CBCS is the rename of CRS.

September 15th, 2010 Bob SC

The company is not bogus, and neither are the debts they are trying to collect. Call them back at 877-334-4763 if need be. If the number they are calling is for someone else, they WILL remove it from their records if you work with them. If it IS you that they are pursuing, then you can ask / insist that they provide you with proof of the validity of the debt.

Bottom line - yes they may be calling the wrong person. Help them realize that and they will leave you alone, but agree with a couple others below.... I think more often than not they have found the right person.

Someone here posted CVCS's call-back # 1-800-947-2987 - which is always cut off at the end of Bob Jones' message.
I called them at that # and read them the riot act. I also told them thet I got the call-back # from a web page full of people who've complained about them and have reported them to the FCC.

At that point, the operator to whom I was speaking seemed to get the message loud and clear.

Its a collection agencey. But they are abusing the phone system. They call non stop and its harrassment by law when you tell them to stop. Their not suspose to keep calling. Its illegal once you warn them to stop calling. They call at 8:30am every morning to wake you up and bug you.Talk to them 1 time then turn them in. I know I found out from my laywer.I have told them seval times now. So I just do not answer any more.Keep copies of their calls.Save anything to do with the way they call you.I already turned them in 2 times now.

These people called my parents house, where I haven't lived in over a decade, asking for me. I have a clean credit report, and admit that I had a couple small bills from the early 90s when I was living on my own that I never paid, a total of around a hundred bucks or so - but, these people say I owe some huge $500+ bill to Verizon. It's not on my credit report, and I'm currently a paying customer with Verizon (and not behind or delinquent in any way) - I'd like to call them back on my VERIZON line and ask them what the heck is going on, but I know arguing with a sleazy collections person is a waste of time. The one that called for me was named "Niel." How could I possibly have a huge amount in collections with a company I'm currently in good standing with? If there was an issue, my phone would have been turned off long before it went to collections. Luckily I hold a law degree, and I have no issues going after fake claimaints. I feel sorry for some of the comments below that say "there's nothin you can do," cuz there is, and it is not at all hard. Just send a letter, and send it return receipt requested with signature confirmation. That's the green card. You can get their physical address from the post below (250 East Town Street, Columbus, Ohio, 43215) - send a letter there with your name and something inside that says "do not contact me in any manner." The next time they call or mail you, you write down the date and exact time, or keep that letter - and you go to small claims court. It is super, super easy. You just take in that green card from your letter, and your hand written list of times they called a nd/or your letters you received in the mail. You may have to pay a court fee, might be like $50. But guess what? You get like $1,000 for EACH TIME they contacted you after that. (that may be just the low end of the scale, I haven't looked at the money in awhile, but I believe it's $1,000). That's a couple weeks' good pay for a few hours of work. They won't defend it, because it costs them more to defend than to pay. And then they WILL STOP CONTACTING YOU. It does not matter AT ALL if you owe them money, or if they are calling your wrong number. Don't be bullied. Pay your debts, play by the rules, and make them do the same.

No real new information to provide here, everyone else has it covered but I do have an idea.

Some of the digital phone services out there let you redirect any incoming phone call, based on the number it is coming from to any other number (why the real phone company doesn't allow this I will never figure out) ... anyway use that service if you have it and redirect all of the calls from this company to a personal phone number of one of the directors (information in Demo's comments)

Just and idea, I hope some people can make good use of it.

CBE Group and probably the whole collections industry has a bad practice of associating any number they can with a collections account. I called them back to ascertain where they are getting the incorrect information from and could not get anything. I'm thinking now that legal proceedings may by the only avenue to resolve this ongoing problem. Since they called me 3 times to my cell phone and 2 of those calls were recorded messages they've gone well beyond the federal DO-NOT-CALL laws. Sure, they are nice enough to mark the number as invalid when you call them back but the damage has already been done.

I just called my phone co, they told me to press *57 after hanging up with them, after 3 calls from them and pressing *57 each time,

I should then go to the local police and open a case number,

Then I am to call the "unlawfull call center" at 1-800-518-5507

Just like everyone else has said this is a scam! They leave fectious names and information hoping to dope you into forfiting your real information. Don't give out ANY info over the phone! Legit companies will request this information via snail mail or through a secured site.

Anyone calling that can NOT address you by your name or who they are calling for and claiming to be a debt collector smells more like a scam artist. Also used the "KATHLEEN" name (noted in several post here) in the voice mail left on my phone. Thank God for caller ID/vocie mail so you don't have to waste the breath speaking to these folks who have nothing constructive to do.

Call this number since they are calling my pay-as-you go cell phone which I have had for over three years, then hanging up when I answer. As I do not owe money and have been receiving calls for "Tina" (I am not Tina) I am presuming this is a collection call for her. They asked for all sorts of information, which I was unwilling to give unless they could identify me as the person they were calling, then gave me another number (a division of their company) at 866-746-3152 where I can supposedly get my name and/or number removed from their call list. When I called 866-746-3152, there was just silence - no ring, no answer, nothing. Beware - this seems more like a scam to obtain personal information than a collection agency to me. If they call again under any number, I will be reporting them to the appropriate agencies.

I received a call from them yesterday, but they didn't leave a message. Today I decided to answer. It was a recorded message telling "Anita J" to call back Kathleen. I called back but someone else answered. I told them that I had been receiving calls from them and if they didn't stop I was going to report them. I said that the person they were asking for did not have this number (maybe they did 2 1/2 years ago). She said my number would be removed. (She wasn't rude or anything like that, but it really annoys me. I know that the person they were asking for was some deadbeat who either used my phone number or used to have it, and now these collection agencies call ME. That's so STUPID. Don't they know that they are bugging the wrong people - or do they care? I haven't received collection agency calls for awhile, but this was starting up again. *I always pay my bills*, so getting calls for some deadbeat person is very very annoying! I think they need to change their strategy instead of bothering the wrong people.)

September 29th, 2008 Joe CA

These guys called me today and left a voicemail looking for me. I did have an old debt in the past that is no longer on my credit report and is no longer collectible. These guys are thieves looking to collect money against the law. They have either re-dated old debts so that they can call on it or they know that the statute of limitations has expired on collections and are harassing innocent people into paying money that they don't need to.

they called me and informed me it was an attempt to collect a debt, and it was a valid debt so i almost gave in and agreed to pay them until, I told her i have the notice at home and i'll mail it in their enclosed envelope. (i was on my prepaid cell and just wanted to end it) that wasn't good enough so she gave me the address to mail the payment, she claimed the address had changed and she would not agree to just send me another notice . Not happy w/ that excuse, I called the company that i owed (directly) and the person i spoke to (at the company) was aware of the creditors they used and stated that the address the lady gave me was not listed and I could just pay the amount in full to the original company, which i have done. Take that CBCS or whoever you are. and now that i think about it how did they get my prepaid cell phone#?

My mother in law has received calls over the last 4 or 5 months from this phone number. The same script is used as listed in other comments (If this is _____ press one, if this is not _____ press two." ....). I have never given my MIL's phone number to anyone to reach me, other than an apartment community when my husband and I moved in together, so I don't see how they got her number or why they would call her house, when I always have a telephone in my own name, as well as my own residence. Seems to me if they wanted to speak with me so badly, they would just look at my credit for my current address, and send me a letter.....

Correction for my previous entry. I answered a call from this number and they are trying to collect a fraudulent account set up in my name by Amazon.com, according to the caller. However, I still believe that GE Moneybank and CBE Group are working together on these cases to harass me into paying these fraudulent accounts in order for me to get them off my back. I filed a complaint against GEMB (and they stopped calling for a month) and within a week CBE took up with the Amazon.com case where GEMB left off--exact same style, tactics, etc. Of course these ID theft accounts are listed on my credit reports so these companies have the info to swap accounts, tactics, etc.

This is a collection agency most likely acting for GE Money Bank. The caller did identify his company and gave a first and last name for himself--a rare and, I believe, professional response. However, he refused to identify his principle or the reason for his call until I identified myself, my address, etc. So it turned out to be a standoff. FYI GE Money Bank is trying to force me to pay for a fradulent accont they set up in my name.

A few more things in order for them to remove your number you have to give them your number remember they already have your number anyways, its for verfication and thats the only way they can pull up the account. Sometimes if their on a dialer system your number may not show up. So don't be afraid to give the number that they already have in their system anyways. Also if their volunteering to remove your number why would you reject it or question it you should be quick to get it done? Its not a scam its a real company just with the wrong info but if your name is the same as someone their looking for or address is where someone once stayed then when they're skip tracing thats how they run across your info. Frequently check your credit report and make sure theres no unknown activity going on. One can never be to careful. -Collection101-

June 9th, 2008 Collection101 FL

This company is a collection agency I actually do have an account with them but its about to fall off of my report so their trying real hard to collect on it now but thats the nature of the business. I use to do collections so I'll give you guys some tips. I know it seems good to hang up but to a debt collector that just means I'll call again and add another call to my records. In collections it works off of accounts worked and calls made and getting a debtor to pay. So when you answer thats just another account worked and a step closer to "bonus pay". If they have the wrong number inform them or call the number back if its automated and ask for a supervisor and inform them they are contacting the wrong individual and to remove your number and stay on the line with them while its being done. If the calls continue inform them you are going to report them for harassment. Don't say your going to call the police like I've heard people say before what are they going to do. Read up on the "FDCPA" this is the bible for debt collection regulations. Hope this info is helpful. Oh yeah if you receive more than 2 calls in one day( 1 automated and 1 human is all you should receive) then you really need to consider filing a report immediately.

This number is apparently used by CBC Innova credit and collection service of Cincinatti, OH. www.cbcinnovis.com If you call the number you are asked for an account number. Since you do not have one, they will ask for the number that they called. After a short discussion in which they state that it was left as a 'contact number' and try to get you to say you know the person they are looking for. Insist upon having the phone number removed. Do not call from your own number; even if you block CID, they collect the number since they are paying for the call. Call from a pay phone or a fax machine. If you feel you are actually being harassed, you could try the phone CO and authorities in Ohio, although the call center could be anywhere.

This company has called my house - IN ERROR - 14 times today. I reported them to Comcast-told them NOT to call me anymore, and they are still doing it! They just called again as I am typing this, and they are looking for someone I don't even know! I guess they don't believe me? I am going to *57 and put the trace into the phone company, and then have it pulled by our local police dept. if it doesn't stop. There must be some kind of law about this! They started at 8am, and have called 14 times by 5:30pm. And it starts with a tape recording, and then a phony named person comes on - at one point I spoke to the same man 3 times, and each time he provided me with a different name.

Hi, These CBCS folks called my home number today 4/3/2008. My caller ID showed they were calling from 800-947-2987. I called them back and got a live person. She was very tense and wanted my account #. I said I have no account # and told her that they had called me. She then wanted my phone # that they had called. I refused to give it to them. She said she would not be able to remove my number unless I gave it to them. I told her that I never asked her to remove my number, why would I want her to remove my number. Now she was getting hot! She said that they would continue to call my number unless I gave them my number to have it removed. I told her I would continue to call her back and play the same game. She then had a few choice words and ended our conversation.

So go ahead and please call these folks back at 800-947-2987 and play their game. It very fun and will really give you a warm fuzzy feeling.

This company calls, then asks for random people. They're hoping you'll give them enough personal information so they can then start calling and asking for you. They'll hound you for money from a debt you already repaid, or a debt you never incurred. I wish someone would put them out of business! I'm not sure having their number blocked would do any good, since they use a variety of phone numbers when generating their calls.

I got a call on my cell phone from (877)808-9098. I did not answer but let voice mail pick it up. I used a different phone number to call them back. When I did they wanted to verify who I was by my name, but did not know my middle name. They simply wanted to vfy by birthday, did not try to verify my ssn. I work for a collection agency. As a legetimate bill collector I can say that we always have a FULL SOCIAL and date of birth, but usually we can verify by GIVING YOU the LAST FOUR of your SSN. Simply ask the person to give you the information before you verify, ask for all of your information including what address they have on file. If any of the information is incorrect, go from there. Keep in mind, if it is a previous address, it may be legit. The key to this is to MAKE THEM GIVE YOU THE INFORMATION FIRST!!! Again, as a LEGITIMATE BILL COLLECTOR we already have the information in front of us. We would not ask you to "give" us information, only verify that the information we have on file is correct. If they say they can only verify by birthdate BOGUS!!! Must verify by at least 2-4 means, 1)bday 2)address 3)social security number & 4) phone! Long story short, told then they have the wrong person!

This CBE Group's CEO is Thomas R. Penaluna; they are in Waterloo, Iowa. They keep calling for my mother who died 3 years ago and they will not stop. They are calling before 9am and after 9pm. I don't answer when I see them on caller ID and there's hangups when the answering machine kicks on. I called the number back, using *67 before dialing in order to block my number, and told the guy who answered to stop calling before 9am and after 9pm or I was going to report them to the Feds. If you google the ceo's name or CBE group, you will find many, many instances where they've been in trouble or are being sued for violating some consumer collection fair privacy act or something like that. Go to their website, cbegroup.com and go to client log in and sign up for them to contact you putting in bogus info -- like company name: QUIT HARRASSING ME; address: do not call before 9am and after 9pm; I put in all kinds of crap in each category and when I got to email I put in 'anyone@aol.com' and for telephone number 123-456-7890. Maybe if everyone would keep sending info like this over and over again, they'll get the message!

Caller said he worked for a collection service agency. He said he wanted to collect an 8 year old debt, which does not appear on my credit report. I've got a situation like Charles, former private mail box getting tons of calls for other boxholders. My 4th call today was from 800-498-2223. Tiring of it, so . . .

The Ohio Secretary of State has some information. The actual company is Credit Bureau Collection Services, Inc. Just copy the first 3 or 4 words into the SOS' business search for all kinds of legal stuff about them. For example, they completed a merger about a year ago: www2.sos.state.oh.us Serena McCoy on the 19th Floor of 250 E. Broad Street was the contact. Dirk Cantrell signed that. William B. Price signed the resolution as the sole director, so he probably is also the owner. Anette Meil was the contact for a trade name filing: www2.sos.state.oh.us at 250 East Town St., using CIBIC Companies, a name not registered with the Ohio SOS. Hmmm. So lots of people to call.

Meil's filing shows they registered a name where they do business in Jacksonville, Florida. Wanna bet that's where Billy Price hangs out about now?

I have had my home telephone number for a little over 2 years. The previous person who had this number is not paying their bills, so I get so many calls for this individual. Most times I ignore the calls, however, this number and company continues to call and leave messages. I called back and told the representative that I am not the person they are looking for and she says "someone in your home knows who we are calling for". I was in no mood and I let her have it, I told her to take my number off their list, I do not have any business with their company. We will see if it works.

I just got a call from this number, also. It was a recorded message that said. "This call is for Martha Whittaker. If you are not Martha Whittaker, do not listen to the rest of this message." Then, there was no more message. I do not know a Martha Whittaker so obviously this collection co. is very poorly run one. Seems a waste of time to pay for automated collection systems that just call random numbers asking for random people.

These people, actually an apparently automated recording, called me again today leaving a message as before: "This message is for ________ _______. If you're not _________ __________, then do not continue listening to this call." Nothing more was recorded. The person named still is unknown to me. I called the number shown in caller ID. When I called 800-947-2987, a woman answered "CBCS" but didn't give her name. I told her of the message received and of having no knowledge of the person named in the message. She asked the number called and I gave it. I then asked whether I'd be called again by the company. After checking whether other accounts were associated with my number, she indicated I won't. I stated, "Good, because if I receive another call, I'll contact the state attorney general's office. This resulted in a snicker from this otherwise polite person.

You thought they would be more creative in 2008... a call from 1-800-498-2223
It was an automated voice message "This call is for (my name), please press 1 if you are (my name)".
And then I was talking to a lady who is with CBCS Collecting Agency, she is calling to collect a past due bill from Verizon dated back in year 2001. She even provided the correct (previous) phone number and my (previous) address for my information. And then she proceeds to ask me to pay for this bill which I owe for the past 7 years and is (magically) due TODAY. I refused to give her any information until I received a written document/ prove from Verizon

I receive phone calls from this number almost daily on my home telephone. Sometimes they leave a message, sometimes they do not. At one point in time they left a message on my answering machine about collecting a debt and requested I call them back. They mentioned CBCS and a number to call them. My telephone number is unlisted and unpublished AND I do not put it on any business transactions/paperwork. I always use my cell number because it is the easiest way to reach me and I have only had the home phone for a few months. They continued to call back but did not leave any more messages regarding debt collection. Instead, they have left a couple messages about purchasing a credit card processing system and promising to pay me $500 if the credit card processing program I utilize is better. I do not run a business of any sort and have no need for a credit card processing program. Obviously this is a scam - first they try to collect a debt and then they try to sell me something when I don't respond to collection efforts!

Hold up there for a moment. Mike, did you say that their direct, unblocked number is - can I bold this? - 614-360-9900? What is there to stop us from calling them? I have been looking for my old friend, Jennifer. I wonder if she is at 614-360-9900? How about Daisy? Jim? Harold? Theresa? My cat wandered away a couple months ago, I wonder if I can call the good people at 614-360-9900 and they'll help me find my cat? I think I definitely want to speak with the person who posted here by the name of "me" because he sounds like he may need a friend (before he does something violent to himself or to innocent people). Maybe if I call them from payphones, the call will go through better? I wonder if I can ask all of my friends to call 614-360-9900 a couple times a day -- just to see what's going on. You know? If they can do all of this calling illegally, why can we not return the favor - legally?

This same message was left a week ago. This evening I called the number. The woman answering identified herself as Myra. She was very rude. I asked the name of the business and she refused to give it, repeatedly asking the number from which I called when I didn't have an account number to give when requested. She said, "I know why you're calling, you don't want us to call you." I asked to speak with a supervisor, resulting in being on hold a minute or two. Myra then returned to the line saying no supervisor was available. WHen I said I would report the company to the Texas Attorney General's office, she replied, "You do that. This company called me again today, previously they used a different number. when I first talked to them, I told them I wanted documentation about this so called debt and they wanted me to verify all my information with them and I told them they could verify with me what they had, they didn't want to and said that they couldn't do it that way. Also I have had experiences with collecting and a collection agency cannot call a cell phone to collect on a debit if there is a land line. Also if the company leaves a message or talked to you at your number they cannot call you again for two days about your debt otherwise you can turn it into harrassment. If it is a so called collection agency they are breaking many, many rules. They are trying to collect on debts that someone never had or has all ready paid off and taken care of. It is very fishy and shady.

October 25th, 2007 me CT

wow you people are stupid. that is a collection agency which is where you end up if you do not pay your bills. they handle many different companies which is why you don't know them as havin any service with them. you owe the bills to other companies. DUH! a collection agency than makes you pay it or well you simply have horrible credit, receive phone calls from them and of course they are all legal calls. you know if you simply pay your bills you wouldn't hear from collection agencies. oh and the number comes out blocked for security reasons and they ask you to verify personal information so that they are sure it really is you. but hey if you ignore them than who cares its your credit thats horrible, no loans, homes, cars, hahahahaha stupid people! They got information from a past credit report, the guy threatened me that this was being reported on my credit report as of yesterday. Wanted me to verify all my information with them, they wouldn't read it to me and me verify. Told them I wasn't agreeing to anything until I see something in writing and then he asked me when I did receive the letter so they had the information in the system, how was I going to pay and asked me for my payment information. BIG FLAG!!! Haven't received anything in writing about this debt and talked to the company that I did have the debt with and they show it has been paid for TWO years!!!! I have a box at a mail center and suspect that some deadbeats have used one or more of the dozens of addresses at that center. My phone is associated with that address and so I suspect that this collection agency is just randomly trying numbers that it can associate with the general address (regardless of box number), without any concern regarding how many people they may annoy. So, it is a form of spam, but it is a spam-based scattershot search for particular debtors among a much larger list of numbers that have some small chance of being the number for the debtor they are seeking. That approach should be illegal, but don't know if it is. Maybe they also try to collect money from people who don't owe any money by making threats and being generally obnoxious. Hey, if you can make a debtor pay by harrassing them, may be you can make someone who owes nothing pay you using the same tactics. In that case, it would be blackmail, which _is_ illegal.

She asked me to verify my mailing address and I ASKED THEM what address they have and she got rude and said that she is marking me down as "refusing to give info"..I told her again to mail me the info since they were smart enough to track me down by phone (My # is unlisted) they should be smart enough to have my address. She then proceeded to hang up on me.

I suspect this is the number for a very rude and persistent collection agency - CBCS. We have gotten a call from them about someone we never met who lived at our address years before we lived here. They called our phone by using a reverse civic address directory. The number has never been associated with the person they are trying to collect from because we've had the number for years. Yet still they call. We've also found our mail being rifled through. We've taking this to the police. We want this stopped and will press charges if the harassment doesn't stop. We don't know the person they're trying to reach and feel threatened for our safety and security in our own home. On the advice of the police, we called the number back, told them we "don't know now, nor have we ever known the whereabouts of the person they seek. Please don't ever call us again." We'll get a warrant for their arrest if they persist.

I received a call from them today asking for my daughter. When I get calls like that I say she doesn't live here, and no, I don't know her number or address, I see her once in awhile at the store, we live across town. She wanted my phone number, and duh! I gave her the number thinking they would take it off their list. They asked me to have her call them. I asked who this was and they said CBCS and this was a personal business matter.

Then I decided that I should find out more about this company. Searched their number, got this site, and now kicking myself for giving the number out. When I called the number back originally, I said that you called my house for a XXXXX XXXX. Duh! I will never be so stupid again!

From now on, if I don't know them, I am not answering the phone and will "Google" them before calling back.

I've been looking for work, so generally I answer the phone right away in case it's an employer. Beter get the cordless which has caller id first. But then hospitals sometimes have bogus numbers so people are not calling them all the time.
