Hi Folks and happy holidays. Here's a bit of information around this topic. 1) Yes, each state has a statute of limitations on when did is deemed not having to be paid. However, the law does not state that the collector has to stop calling you - they can still try to collect, even though the statute of limitations has passed. IMPORTANT: If you are close to your statute of limitations, DO NOT pay them anything (even if they settle for 2% of the total debt). Also, do not get into any payment agreement with these types of companies. The 2 aforementioned activities WILL re-set the statute of limitations on the debt (as far as your credit report. EXAMPLE: a) You have 2 years left on the statute of limitations. b) You get into an agreement with them (even verbal if they are recording, which they may do if they tell you ahead of time) or you make a small payment toward the debt. Outcome is that reporting on your credit report will re-start from the day of the above.

This is Central Portfolio Control; 6640 Shady Oak Road; Suite 300, Eden Prairie, MN 55334. They are a collection agency. If you do not owe their client money the proper phrase to use with them is: "I consider you a hostile agent of your client and I intend to file a complaint against your firm, and your client, with the Attorney General (of your state) and the FTC. I will also file a cause of action in court for damages." This should result in their sending the file back to the client whether or not you are the party they are actually seeking. Send it Certified, Return Receipt Requested via the USPO. Also contact Qwest Communications and tell them you are part of a class action that is going to sue them for allowing illegal harassment.

EKU, no debt collector is going to ''get the hint'' until you actually give one, preferably in writing. Making wishful gripes in every CPC thread on this site is not getting the job done.

To a ''not me'' case I always recommend putting the agency on notice, just as you would if you were the target and the debt claim was invalid. Send a ''cease-communication'' notice via USPS Certified with return card. This is the method promoted by the FTC and many consumer watchdogs, and the only way to set a legal landmine, as such a notice is ignored at their risk of a lawsuit from you. You may already be due some payback if you can prove you've endured abusive or misleading treatment in an effort to collect debt.

You can get the whole thing done in one one curt paragraph. Some variant of this will do: ''These are the affected phone numbers, I cannot help you with your problem, stop calling about this matter.'' In my ''shut-ups'' I also like to briefly review when I was called and what I was told by live reps and/or canned messages. This is done in a calm ''inside voice'' without making threats or citing rules. I also print the relevant USPS tracking number someplace near the page footer. My little parts and accessories establish the background for an escalated dispute, particularly if I encountered resistance or frustration during past calls.

CPC is still trying to find William Keller even though 8 means we are not William Keller.

I wish CPC would get the hint after 999 calls that this number does not belong to William Keller.

This company keeps calling from different numbers for William Keller. It is automated and they give the option to push 8 to tell someone this is not the number for him. After one minute it disconnects.

Thanks to the info found on this site, I've filed a c/o w/the FTC against this #. Don't know the person they are looking for. All I can think of is that someone must have randomly come up w/my # on some application or form and I've been getting calls for over 6 mos! I have NO debt WHATSOEVER!

To those of you being harassed by these morons, file complaints with the proper authorities and then sue. Also, I suggest having a little fun with them. They like to waste your time, well you can waste theirs also. Using their name, phone number and address, go online and fill out NUMEROUS requests for health, medical, homeowners, auto, etc. insurance quotes. Within minutes they will be inundated with numerous calls, many of them automated. Sites for obtaining online degrees, working at home, travel, etc. will also bombard them. Do this over and over.

Okay "Pay Up" let's say this. You lose your job, you have to decide what bills you are more important to pay. A car so you can get to job interviews, a house so you have a roof over your head, and electricity. That's most of the money you have not to mention food and gas. Just because someone falls behind on bills, doesn't mean they are deadbeats. There are legitimate reasons sometimes. Granted there are people who just don't want to pay. But I am currently paying several overdue bills, and being responsible now that I have a job. I told these people that I would pay something every month, and once I got the other bills paid off (which is in a few months) I would start paying them more. Totally committed to paying them what I owe them. They in turn hung up on me. When I called them back and asked for a supervisor, they said they didn't have one they did this on a volunteer basis...which is a lie. So before you judge, make sure you know who are you judging. The economy the way it is, don't expect everyone to be deadbeats, just people who are out of jobs trying to catch up.

16 months of calls for the former holder of my phone number - they won't listen. I pay for Call Block from Verizon, but when it reached the 25 number max, I deleted all the numbers and started over. Needless to say, the calls started up immediately before I had reentered their number. I'm retired on Social Security so it's a drag having to pay extra to block these calls.

Update: I called 800-511-6409, a number for CPC that I found on another site and reached a law firm that works with CPC. I informed the person that I don't believe they have the right number and they disclosed the name, which of course was incorrect, so they agreed promptly to remove the number from their call list. Just FYI.

I get this call daily on my office fax number. For PAY UP's info, I'm not a debtor and they're not trying to reach me. CPC is the dumbass.

These people call me daily sometimes with wrong # on caller ID. They ask for my son. I ask them who they are, they won't give me any information. I then ask them if this is a sick joke, over and over. My son died over a year ago. These people are rude and nasty. I then tell them to stop calling. They won't listen. They are still calling me. By the time the call is over I am so upset and shaking with back pain you won't believe. These people aren't human at all. The pain of my son's death is still fresh. It is like having my heart ripped out all over again.

i get 3-4 calls from this number 952-944-1620 daily. the "machine" keeps asking for carol lambert. no, there's never been any carol lambert here, ever! is there any way to stop these people? it's as harrasing as someone constantly knocking on the door. im sure i can call cops to stop that, so how come there's no way to stop these people?

I've also been harrassed to no end. I understand they are trying to do their job. I tried to work with them, I was patient - but they are rude and could care less. The moment I got threatened and they used foul language, I filed a complaint.

I think there is a class action lawsuit here. I too have called them and told them that my cell number no longer belongs to the person they are looking for. The man on the other end of the phone was rude and hung up on me. I called back and got a more polite person. I'm just waiting to see if they keep calling now. I hope I didn't misspell any words, I'm not a good speller but I’m sure I did better than PAYUP;-)

I just keep returning the favor by sending a fax to thier toll free number to stop calling the office number, over and over and over again - the phone lines work both ways and maybe if enough people did this they'd get the message!

i got a call from 952 944 1620...today 04/01 on my cell phone these companys have too much power to disturb people just for the hell of it. mr owner of the company pay attention please.

I've had several calls from CPC. Each time the representative was very nice and polite. They are trying to collect money from an ex boyfriend who is a known deadbeat, has declared bancruptcy, has two federal tax liens, charge-offs, bad checks, unpaid accounts, late car payments etc. To me this is all legitimate. Like another writer says, if you paid your bills and are honest you have nothing to fear or to hide from. I know the person they are looking for is no good, so I cooperate fully! I gave them all the contact info I have for the guy. Why don't you all just live within your means and pay your bills! EASY!

These people call constantly for my son. I told them he isn't available during the day. He does have a job.
Today a guy called and I told him I would pass the message on again thats all I can do. He asked where my son works and I said I can't just give out that information and he told me to stop covering for him. He got very rude

"By not disconnecting you are acknowledging you ARE Gina and Carols Carinas. This is an attempt to collect a debt and any information obtained will be used to collect to do this. Please call CPC at 1-800=280-1565. Thank you."

To PAY UP, I highly doubt ,with your spelling mistakes, you even OWN anything to pay on. I , just like all these others am constantly called FOR SOMEONE WHO PREVIOUSLY HAD MY NUMBER. I owe NOTHING. Telling them your not that person doesn't work, they never believe you and keep calling, what does work ? Bang two metal things together in their ear, they don't call back.

The day our phone line was turned on they called apparently looking for someone who presumably had this number before we did. Automated, and from what I've been reading here I really hope they don't call us every day because that will suck.

FYI - for around $100, you can purchase a "privacy" device that can be programmed to block the ringing from any telephone number, including anonymous callers and whole zip codes if you choose (do a search using your favorite search engine to find it). The only prerequisite is you must have caller ID. The only real downside is that the device only works with the phone that is plugged directly into it (but you can always turn off or turn down the ringers of other phones through the residence).

To everyone - do what I've done and maybe we can get the FTC's attention. I went to the National Do Not Call Registry and filed an online complaint in less than 60 seconds. If everyone does this, perhaps we can make these slimeballs as miserable as they are trying to make us!

I am a secretary and have been receiving calls daily for an unknown person from this #. Its always automated on the other end. I never press 1 like it says, or call the #. Hopefully they will stop calling soon! I am getting sick of answering the phone and going through the "hi thank you for calling" routine for a recording! they have called every day in the last 2 weeks. I hope they get the message!

This collection agency is calling my home I have indicated that the person they are calling for George Smith is someone we have never ever heard of. I also told them to remove the number from the file. They have since called again my 10 year old daughter told them they had the wrong number and they forced her to take a message. When I called to inform them I was not happy they were really rude and hung up on me.

Every call I've gotten from this number has left a message asking for a call back. Nothing about who it is or what it's about. The one time I did call back it was a machine asking me to stay on the line, so I hung up. I am having this number blocked.

I had my first taste of these people today. WOW! What a$$holes! I didnt get to the phone to answer the original call, so I called the number back and asked who they were. The guy just kept asking for my number. I kept asking questions and the guy says "if your gonna get testy with me, I will just disconnect this call right now" I said "Be my guest!" They are looking for my step-mother whom I have not had contact with for over 25 years! How did they get MY number???? Weird.

Again, rude male failed to identify saying who or what he was doing and why he was calling. I The number they left was 1-800-280-1565. When I asked for identification, he said "it would be a federal offense" to tell me. He refused to help me and said I would continue to get calls and hung up. He also said the Do Not Call list didn't apply to him and what he does so it didn't matter if I reported him. I called back and spoke to a female and she simply took my name of the list and apologized for the man's rudeness.

Called these people to see who they wanted.They threatened to ruin my credit over a bill that is paid and cleared by the original company. I told them to send me proof of the debt and I will fight it. They told me they did not have to send me anything. I told them if they cannot send me proof by mail dont call my residence. I just got off the phone with them, they asked for my exhusband that i havent seen in five years! Asked why I was covering for him, called me a liar and said they had spoken to him at that number on 2 differnent occations~they are insane~I live with my fiance. Don't think he would like my exhuband hanging around. Piss on them!

Update on how to stop CPC from calling. Go to:
ftc.gov. Collection agencies are severely limited as to what they may and may not do. Read the entire document, but specifically read section 806 on harrassment. You can also file a complaint here - do it!

CPC has called me several times and I finally answered the call. I am not who they are looking for and was told, "Just keep trying to hide". I called my local telephone company and they have since blocked their number meaning they are no longer able to contact me by phone. To say that they were rude and extremely ignorant is putting it mildly. You can also complain to the FTC (Federal Trade Commission).

I am receiving multiple calls a day concerning a person I do not know. It is a new phone # for me and isn't even a residence its a cell phone. My attempts to explain this to them have been useless.

Started receiving these calls several months ago. Like most of you, I too, tried to get to the bottom of it. Didn't matter that I told them they were looking for someone else with the same name, but not address, debts, or social. CAN YOU BELIEVE THEY ACTUALLY GAVE ME THE LAST 4 DIGITS OF SOMEONE ELSE'S SSN? I agree the + comments are likely CPC hacks. I believe this is a company that collects on default student loans (looks like their employees should take out a student loan) and GI Bill overpayment. I had an overpayment that I cleared up with the VA but these clowns won't get their teeth out of my six.

They call me everyday 5 days a week never leave a message as to whom they are looking for, I don't owe anybody anything. I won't answer unless they leaqve a message as to whom they want to speak with, same as all the other 800 numbers that call on a daily basis!

This company called and sent a letter both within two days looking for my deceased father. They hung up after I said my father was deceased.

This co called me - I called them back. Talked to to people, recorded the conversation and will be sending to Attorney General. Their business practices must be illegal - never have I experienced such unprofessionalism.

This company called despite my calling them back to tell them that the person they want does not own this phone #. They continued to call. Finally I followed the instructions that the digital voice prompted and a male voice answered on the other end. I told him that the person they are looking for does not own or live at this phone number. I told him that I'd already instructed them to stop calling and he told me not to get rude with him... becoming rude with me, ironically. I expect they'll call again. They've called at least half a dozen times despite being told not to call this number for the person.

This is a relentless, incredibly rude collection agency calling repeatedly for someone who doesn't live here. I've told them numerous times to stop calling, but they have hung up on me, refused to provide me with their address and put me on hold mid-sentence on the Spanish-speaking line. I finally got their address to send a letter to stop calling for someone who doesn't live here. If this is your problem, too, their address is PO Box 9136, Needham, MA 02494. Once they get the letter, they'll stop calling.
