They call all hours, never leave messages, hang up when I answer. Never answer when I call back. I once let my phone sit open and waited for two minutes before I got cut off. I heard what sounded like breathing...

The usual pattern is: the 888-633-7229 number calls. It shows "TOLL FREE CALL" in the caller ID. They hang up, and a second call comes in within 30 seconds or so. This one shows "UNKNOWN NAME" and UNKNOWN number in the caller ID.

I have our landline answering machine set to Answer Only. No One is allowed to leave a message - they can only listen to my new recording. "My new message informs callers that the number they called is neither monitored or set up to receive calls; it is used as a 911 Emergency line only. If the caller needs to contact us and does not have a current phone number on file, please send any correspondence to our mailing address. Thank You."

The line's ringer is shut off and we pretty much don't even use this landline. Everyone has cellphones here. But we keep a corded phone available for emergencies and because the Satellite TV requires a connection if we want to avoid a $5 monthy surcharge.

The new outgoing message has worked wonders. At first, they listened to the message. Tried calling back a few times. Now the calls have stopped and we can finally receive the hard-copy we have been trying to get from some of these jerks. We wanted actual mail pieces to take to our lawyer.

The usual bottom feeders trying to collect on old, out of statue-of-limitation debt.
By law they can only call you once a day, even if you pick up and hangup right away.
