I also had a call from 888-298-2431,fl. chapter I did'nt have the money after they sent the paperwork for a $20.00 donation,I explained we had to replace a transmition in the car and had used our savings up so than they said could you please send $10.00,because they were getting a pkg. ready to send to troops ,I told them maybe next mo.they continued to harass me for the money, not being understanding of our problems,so I just hung up.Now it does seem suspicious.
I also recieved a call requesting I make a donation. At first sounded legitimate, but thought later, I have never been approached like this before.
They have called me back 3 times asking if I got the letter? will I be making the donation soon?
who do I contact to truly find out if it is an honest legitimate agency?
Received the paperwork from "United States Navy Veterans Association - Florida Chapter". I decided I would check them out online. What I found was that the address to mail the donation to is a mailboxes etc. address. I went on to check out the address they have listed as the National Headquarters in Washington D.C. and that too is a mailboxes box at a UPS store. It all seems suspicious to me and will NOT be sending my donation.
My son's been in Afghanistan. Before Christmas sometime I was terribly, frantically worried for no reason other than being a mother with a child in harms way. I came home from work and went straight to bed, in deep deep sleep... the phone rang... I had the phone beside me for some reason and I answered it. In my groggyness, I heard US and Troops or Military, I'm not sure. The poor guy on the other line got one HYSTERICAL mother, SCREAMING... "Is my son ok?????!!!" Finally we got it all sorted out, and I apologized for freaking out. And I was grateful that he wasn't asking for any account # of mine or anything, cuz I was terribly upset and still only half awake.. but after all of that, understanding my situation right then and there... HE STILL WANTED A DONATION, AND THEY'VE BEEN CALLING EVER SINCE! I, like you, have looked on line to verify... but it's illegible. I am involved in many veterans organizations and they ALL say they DO NOT SOLICIT $$$$ like that!! My trusted friends think it's a scam, I have no way to tell, so I finally told them the check is in the mail.. but it's not... and so far... I haven't gotten another call. ~Oh, and last week my son came home to the US (for now)!!
Received a call from "US Navy Veteran's Association" a few days after Christmas. Callers were polite, confirmed information, seemed legit. To be sure, I waited for the mailed portion, and was surprised to see my name misspelled. The website associated with the National Headquarters in Washington DC is supposedly created in cooperation with the VA, yet is poorly designed -- just one long page with information pasted on. I could not find a local Florida Chapter online, though did find one in a different city. The return on the envelope I recieved is for a "contributions processing central florida". What has been very irritating is continuing phone calls from a company called "ACS" that makes phone calls on the behalf of charities. No one ever answered when I picked up, I did call the number, and left a pointed message to never call me again. I am quite suspicious of the organization now, and plan on sending a letter instead informing them that I will be donating directly to individual families in need rather than through charitable organizations (NPR had a great story on this this morning).
I was solicited for a $20 donation and requested they mail info packet. Packet arrived and I checked the address of D C headquarters provided on the flyer with the address on the website, and they do not match. I'm also suspicious of the "Virginia Chapter" address located at a UPS Store in Bon Air,VA.
Website is very cheesy looking; I definitely do not trust this one.
The caller talked to my mother (85 years old), so I just heard her responses. When they told her it was a donation for "Navy Veterans", she assumed it was a good cause and they apparently said they would mail her the paperwork. It was strange that they called back a few days later and asked her some more questions. I heard her say that it was her first time and when I asked her about that she said they had asked her why she agreed to donate. Her memory was a little fuzzy about what the questions had been, but I was really curious even after the first call since we have been on the Do Not Call list for several years. We rarely get solicitations, so I'm always suspicious of the ones that do call. Anyway, I am trying to research the organization because she seems to think that she should pay the $20 she promised. It's so odd that there is no web site listed on the form that they sent, and the mailing address is a post office box at the UPS store in Bon Air, VA, even though the headquarters is listed as being 1718 M Street N.W. #275 Washingrion D.C. 20036.
Received phone call 12/8/08 requesting donations to send care packages to troops... important that I send the check right away. Call sounded legitimate, but don't feel right about sending the money... something odd about it.
can1t find anything about them? going to call veterans affairs.
Better Business Bureau says they do not meet the criteria for a legit Charitable Organization. Any one know anything about them. I made a pledge, but don't want it going to fund a dinner dance for the fund raisers.
