So here's the fun new fact about West Asset Management ... They were just fined $2.8 million in March 2011 by the FTC for chronic FDCPA violation. This civil penalty set a new record high for the industry. Their crimes were no different from those of their peers: runaway skip tracing, abusive and hostile phone reps, illegal threats, privacy violation, ignoring 'no-call' demands, wrongful seizure of savings, outright lies .... on and on, practically every part of FDCPA trampled on like their victims. Do read more ....

If you are receiving repeated, misdirected, and/or abusive calls from a third party debt collector, you may find relief in the provisions of the FDCPA, the federal law which regulates collector behavior and provides you simple tools for your own defense. It grants you control of how you are contacted, and the means to sue at low cost. Learn your rights and first response tactics at FTC-dot-gov. See also your state laws for additional support.

Non-S: Remove that call block ASAP. I mean it. Document all Caller ID, save messages, record live calls from this bunch. You are not dealing with an ordinary phishing expedition. This is hostile debt collection. Maybe you're the target, maybe your name is one letter off from some other sap. There are too many reasons for the pestering. Doesn't matter because you are leaving money on the table if you continue ignoring the calls.

That threat of legal action you heard was a severe federal offense. The abusive rep isn't helping, nor is the lack of identification. You can easily score a settlement for FDCPA violations, possibly TCPA as well. If you're not ready to sue pro se, a good consumer attorney will take this on contingency, his bill fully paid by your opponent.

I'd agree ''Michelle'' was the sort of shill who infiltrates these forums every so often, especially for firms gaining a higher nefarious profile. More on that later. As to Kevin's woeful outcome, how do we know it wasn't WAM that illegally forced junk debt upon him? I smell FCRA violations.

Michelle, wow, you must work for them. If anyone believes your phishing and social engineering statement, that person deserves to have a debt illegally assigned to them. Pick up the phone and talk, Yeah right!

Keep getting calls from this number but no more, I've blocked them. Apparently a phishing type request for information. They supposedly have a file on me or someone. Don't know who and they don't mention who. Only to call immediately or they will start legal proceedings in 4 days. I do hope whoever they want calls them and within 4 days. Otherwise they are going to start legal proceedings against them. I won't call them back. It's a phishing operation from a collection outfit working completely outside the law. Probably looking for the folks who had this telephone number before me. Can't be me or anyone at this number, we owe no-one anything and pay our bills on time. They can keep calling, I have blocked their number. I wish them luck. And also need to say that the individual who calls leaves no name, just a number, makes threats, and yells. Guess they have to earn a living someway or is it the easy way by making illegal threats and intimidation. Sorry, I just blocked their calls. Lesson, if you get a call from them, block their number and if by chance you do decide to answer their call or call their number don't provide any information and don't get into any type of conversation with them. They are trained to use Social Engineering to get you to divulge your name and other information in order to illegally assign a debt to you or someone in you name. Do not provide names, telephone numbers, addresses, locations, work phone numbers. Absolutely nothing. If you talk to them (why anyone would would be a big mistake) just say you don't know the individual and hang up. Any promise to stop the calls if you provide some information on yourself (name, address, etc.) will help them assign any debt to you. They lie, lie, lie, during their trained phishing and social engineering questioning. And the results is that they will do anything to assign a debt to you or a member of your family. Don't answer the call, Don't provide any information, and best of all ignore them and block their calls. Good luck.

This was a caller who stated her name was Nancy Acosta calling to "finalize papers for the Estate of my Father" (name omitted) and needed to talk to me.

She did not say who she was calling on behalf of (Chase Bank) nor did she say she was from a Collection Agency.

Chase Bank accepted a pay off amount on a credit card that my parents had (both died within a few months of each other) Dad was the only person who signed the contract mom was an additional. I spoke with them, offered them a porcentage payout based on the 3 credit cards and 2nd mortgage and taxes that dad owed and the money in the bank after covering funeral expenses and legal fees. The bank accepted and in the final payment there was a letter included that stated that the check was a paid in full based on the monies available and the debt. I also noted the same on the check on the signiture area stating that if the check was cashed or deposited it was accepatance in full of payment on the account and that no further action could be taken by the bank or on their behalf. Needless to say the bank did deposit the check and thus they are out of luck. Also in NJ (the state where my parents lived) debt cannot be passed along to family no matter whether it is a spouse or a child, the debt died with the debtor.

Now I found out that CHASE has put in MY credit report the debt of my father (I was not even the executor) and I have now the outstanding balance as a blemish on my credit report.

Same A collection agency for a debt a dead relative owed

2008-09-22 20:10:31 UTCBob Gander

This is a collection agency. They were calling on behalf of Chase Visa for a debt that a dead relative owed. 1-877-486-4998.

Female caller just gives her name and the 877 number to call, also provides a reference number you must use when calling back. As Fred states I to believe it's a collection agency for either yourself or someone you know how has you as a reference or contact. Collection Agencys are sneaky that way.

this number is for West Asset Managment, used to be called Omnium. It is a collection agency for credit card companies

How do I stop them from calling?

  1. Ask the unwanted caller to stop calling and put you on their do not call list (they are legally required to comply).
  2. If your number is registered with the National Do Not Call Registry you can file a complaint with the FTC.
  3. Block them with a call blocker:
