I have a CAP.ONE CARD.and called customer service number on the back of the card...my account is in fine standing and they said NO ONE is calling from CAPITAL ONE,and they couldn't find ANY reason that they would.THIS IS A SCAM!!!! DON'T give any info. they never leave message,I also called back this number, and was asked to give card number DON'T do it!!! If in doubt, call the customer service number on the back of you're card.

WARNING!!!! This is NOT from Capital One. This is a scam trying to get your credit card number and social security number. I saw this number on my Caller ID a few times. This morning I got a call so I decided to answer. I do have a Capital One Platinum card and also a card for my business. None have ever been delinquent, not once. My credit and account are in excellent standing. When I answered the call, no one said anything. Eventually they hung up the phone. I called back and got the Cap One greeting and was immediately asked to enter my credit card number. I did not. I said "Customer Service". The prompt insisted on a credit card number. I insisted on Customer Service. I got the hold and was told I was being transferred. I got a piece of a message saying it was 'Raymond', then the call was cut off. I laughed. These scammers would go to any lengths to steal people's money.

Hang up call to cell.

2011-01-21 21:02:31 UTCWogBoy

Well, I only answer calls I want to answer...and I never answer with truthful information. I never lie, I just don't supply information. Now, I hava had it with calls from phone banks in India. I am in no way, shape, nor form, a racist...but I simply tell them...that I do not speak with Harijan...or any other Wogs. I also lecture them about taking jobs from Americans...and have been known to leave fake names like, Mai Whang or Hugh Jorgan. I don't care if you owe a debt or not. If they are calling instead of writing and serving you with papers, they have already deemed that your account isn't worth screwing with. Just tell them to FO.

I wonder if this is some scam. They want to know if a person lives here that I have never heard of and how long I have had this number and they will take the number out of the system. I said I wanted to keep my number. I attempted to call back this so called "Signet Bank VA" with no luck.

2010-11-09 04:39:07 UTCcuch80

I hate when a company calls for my husband and won't say who they are... especially when it is a woman and they sound all secerative.

2010-09-28 22:22:01 UTCUKN

same number keeps calling me!

2010-09-22 16:28:20 UTCKim

If you are recieving calls from any company go to your local Attorney General website and file a complaint. The more info you have regarding number of calls, the phone numbers used and the name of the company the better.
They will contact the company and they WILL stop contacting you...plus you get a nice a little letter of apology from said company. It's harrassment...plain and simple.

Rude caller, asked for someone that doesn't live here. Then wanted to know if my number was new, told her it was none of her business. She told me it didn't have to be so difficult. Asked what dept she was from and she wouldn't tell me. Hung up on the witch. Called the number today, the recording asked for my acc #, don't have one, then it asked for my social security number. Totally out of line. I have emailed Captital One.

Called my cell phone but did not leave a message.

2010-09-08 14:40:46 UTCMike

2010-08-23 17:08:35 UTCDelta

Called here on Saturday. Do not have any business with them. Do not want them calling here again!!

2010-06-18 04:56:33 UTCSusie

The thing is, Capital One (didn't know who it was 'til I got home and dialed from my blocked landline) called me on my mobile phone, which is incredibly rude, as it costs me when they do that. But here's the KICKER: I closed out my account with them, oh, easily nine years ago! But every once in the while, they start this little onslaught of phone calls to me. I never pick up. In the past, I've called back to complain, and each time, I'm promised any and all calls from them to me will cease and desist. HAH!

Last night, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT, they called my landline three separate times.

Now, to be fair, this may NOT actually BE Capital One. The automated system answers with a recorded female's voice stating "Capital One," followed only by requesting one's credit card number. Since I don't go further than that -- I mean, I don't punch that in but, instead, just hang up

TO ROSS C.: YOU call the FBI! Actually, it's even simpler than THAT. Just go to their website (fbi.gov), and find the page where you can lodge a complaint. When I did it about six months ago, around 11PM, an FBI agent called me back in less than FIVE MINUTES, and no kidding!!! He said it was slow in their headquarters. Crazy, huh? But YOU call the FBI, since you're suggesting others do that.

They Called & Asked For A Phillis Delpugit, Person That We Don't Know, And I Told Them That "She's No Longer At This Number" Because We Got A New Number Since April. The Person, Who Has A Strange Accent, Caught An Attitude And Asked Me "How Long Did You Have This Number?", Then I Said "2 Months". And Then, They Were Rude And They Took Our Number Off Their Call List. They Hung Up On Me Without Saying "Bye Bye".

2010-05-28 18:17:03 UTCJer

It's Capital One and they have a special offer for you. They have left messages on my phone several times now.

2010-05-11 13:32:44 UTCmibo

Send me,you know what.

2010-05-04 02:53:21 UTCan

I received multiple calls from this no, I would hear a automated recording, after a few days a live person called me from the no. I advised I never had a capital one credit card no, they asked me for my social security no to confirm, I would only give them my full name, the rep. verified the name was not the same they had on file for the credit card, but explained since I would not give him my social security no, he would not remove my no. I asked for a manager the manager said she would remove my no, after I called her from my no, to show that I was not who they were looking for, since they do have caller id. I had peace for 2 days and the calls continued. So for a bout a week of speaking to a manager after each call, I changed my no.

2010-04-22 00:19:50 UTCTK

This number calls our house 6 times a day in pairs of two(morning, afternoon and evening). I asked to have our number removed and asked to speak to a supervisor over 10 times. She finally said she would try to find one and hung up. I am so tired of these people calling!!

Called my 81 year old mom and kept asking for my dad, he was in the hospital, wouldn't say why they called. Now someone is calling with a local number and asking for someone we don't know and won't leave a message. Calling 3x a day driving my mom nuts. They don't have a capital one card. When you call the local number it says it is disconnected and not in use. I think it is the same people.

If this is really Capital One then wgy not leave a message? I know the Privacy Act limits what they can say but they can at least have the common sense to leave a message that states something like. . ."This is Capital One with an important message, please call us at XXX-XXX-XXXX." If they cannot take the time to leave a message then I do not have time to call a number back just because it shows on caller ID.

2010-01-02 02:17:49 UTCcvn

I doubt that Capital One is the owner of this number. I've had a CapOne account for many years and I don't think they've ever called. They notify by mail. The two calls I got today from this number were ID'd only as Toll Free Call, and they hung up with no message. Legitimate businesses don't do that.

When I get a call from an unknown number, I never pick up. If it's important they'll leave a message.

For those of you that insist they call because we have debt with whatever company it is, you could not be more wrong. I have never had a credit card with capitalone. I'm basically debt free aside to normal living expenses. In the past if I was late on anything I would get a call directly from the company. They would leave messages that identified who they were calling for and who they were. I think, by law they cannot leave detailed info. on a phone message but at least you would be given a contact name and # to call back with. I receive at least 5 calls a day from #'s like this either at home or on my cell. Oddly
enough I changed my cell provider about 4 months ago & now have a new # so I know the call is not for me. They just want some fool to be dumb enough to provide their personal information. Best advice would be not to answer. I'm pretty sure if you owed money to someone, you would be hounded by mail as well as by ligit phone calls.

My son lost his job, got behind on his payments, and keeps getting phone calls from these folks. Fair enough, I guess, because he IS behind on his payments.

BUT, sometimes when they call, if I don't have the answering machine on my phone will eventually ask them to enter the access code to check the messages on my phone!!! This doesn't happen with other calls. I have NO IDEA what they are trying to do on their end, but THIS is REALLY CREEPY!!!

The VCF file adds 35+ each w Home, Fax, Mobile and Business as incremental names for CapitalOne. Assigns to 'Ignore' group for silent ring or 'special' ringback tone. Import using BitPim.

To all. I filed an official complaint at fcc.gov. The FCC provides this website specifically for many of the same kinds of problems I see described here. This site lets you provide specific information for filing a formal complaint. They also allow you to digitally "sign" an "Attestation" page which gives them legal right to pursue the boogers.

I got a response letter from them about four days later confirming the information I provided.

This process at least lets your voice be heard. I whole hearted recommend everyone here, and those finding this site in the future, handle their problems in this manner.

2009-06-01 01:01:37 UTCTheLazyComic

Okay, this may piss off some of you, but then, I don't really care. As with so many in this country, I lost my job a year and a half ago. I've applied for over 400 jobs in this time. To date, nothing. Not even a phone call or interview. Nothing. So, I fell behind on my credit card payments for the last 3 months, across the board. (Or is that across the border, since all of my illegal alien neighbors have jobs)? Anyway, Capitol One has been driving me crazy. Look, you pin heads, if I had a job and the money to pay your asses, I would. And I kept this pay-game up for over a year with no job. Now, I'm broke, and VERY pissed off. So who calls and leaves messages from these banks? Hindu Harry from India. It's enough to make you wanna go in the street and scream at the top of your lungs. (I asked these banks for a customer service job a year ago, but then again, I'm not bi-lingual and don't speak Hindi). So the way I look at it, I've paid taxes, (just like all of you), over the years. That bail-out the bastards got? Consider your piggy asses paid in full. I'm done with the banks. They can all kiss my big, fat, old ass.

We came across another phone number on these tax payer bailed out thugs and crooks after they started terrorizing our family and refused to stop, even after showing we DO NOT HAVE AN ACCOUNT WITH THEM! This number was listed on another web site dealing with Domestic War against America Citizens.

Capitol One Legal Department
888-567-2271 Extension 4538741

This takes you directly to one of their little Legal Pukes where you can return the harassment they are perpetrating toward your family. We started calling this little puke right after each harassing call was made to us. It said to stop calling because we were harassing it. The nerve of these bastards. We said fine! Sue us and take us to court because we would love to discuss what is going on in open court. It hung up on us. After this continued for 5 days, the 8 month long Capitol One attack on this American Family stopped, or has for now.

Don’t count on the law or politicians to stop the war on your family by the filth at Capitol One because they are all in bed together (remember the $Billions$ of your money the Gov freely gave them!). They are all in bed together, laughing at you and me each night when they all get together for fine wine and steaks on your bill or Business Jet trips to Las Vegas for Gambling and Wholes also on your bill. You have to take their War back to them and take matters into your own hands. Turn the war waged on your family by Capitol One back on them and call the above Capitol One puke each time they call you.

Oh yea, I forgot to mention.... I also registed Richard Fairbank's Virginia number with all the off shore internet gambling sites I could find. My husband later found a site on the internet where you can enter your address and phone number to be part of internet marketing and survey contacts. We figured that Richard Fairbank would love getting all these mailings and calls.

Anyone know how to sign him up for phone sex calls?

2009-05-02 04:00:05 UTCShelly

I programmed my phone to simply forward calls from these pukes to that bastard CEO Richard Fairbank's Virginia number. I then got the idea to forward all toll free numbers and out of area numbers to that puke's number. It's beem real nice and quiet around here since. I hope that puke is liking his phone calls coming back around to him. We have no idea how this bastard fuck decided he could harrass us into payng the bill of someone we don't even know! I'm thinking of doing what I read another person on here said, getting a Capital One card and running it up and NOT PAYING IT for their sins against this family.

2009-04-11 14:13:27 UTCA.L.

Thanks Fran. We are also victims of this company. We live just outside McLean so I will make it a point to at least find out what the resident address of Richard Fairbank is and post that on the internet. Usually if you get the name and address, you can get the phone number without too much trouble and get that posted on here. Its time to start calling this creep at his home for his sins.

Here's another address where this scumbag might be found hanging around. We can keep an eye on both and if we see him, follow him home and get his home address to post on the internet.

We were plagued by these Bastards calling here. We did not have a Capitol One account and never did and after this will never have one in the future. The fact that we were not the person they were after did not seem to matter to these ignorant fools because they just continued to call over and over. No wonder they are failing as a business, they are soooo STUPID!

Anyway, we were able to find out who the CEO of this sham company was.

Chairman, President, and CEO Richard D. Fairbank
1680 Capital One Drive
McLean, VA USA 22102
Phone: 703-720-1000
Fax: 703-205-1755

So, I called this fool. Never got around his secretary but I told her that as long as Capital One was waging war on this family, we would return the favor and call his office all day long until he stops his reign of war on this family. She transferred me to a “Senior Level Corporate Service Manager”. I told her that if the harassment did not stop I would just call ole Richard D. Fairbank at home next time (I really didn’t have that number but she didn’t know). After giving her the number that Richard D. Fairbank’s corrupt corporation had been harassing, she said to give her 10 minutes and she would call me back and told me what number she would be calling from so my caller ID would identify it as her.

5 minutes later, she called back and said she had confirmed that my number did not match the owner name of the person that they were looking for and that she had had my number removed from their calling system immediately and I would not have any further calls.

Okay, what do we see here?

1. You can’t deal with these brainless imbeciles at the numbers that are calling you; you have to go to the CEO’s office.

2. This lady was able to confirm the owner of my phone number in 5 minutes, So why do they have such a problem continuing to call the wrong number?

3. When they tell you it takes 24 to 48 hours to have your number removed… they are lying through their corrupt teeth. This lady had it removed immediately.

4. The people running interference for the Corporate Thug known as Richard D. Fairbank will do anything to keep this from reaching him.

So, give this Bastard’s Office a call if you want the harassment to stop and tell this that his phone number is posted on the internet because if this and you will call him at home if you get another call.

These are the domestic Terrorist known as Capital One, A known and reported corrupt banking cell. Their last claim to evil was taking your hard earned money in taxes as a bail out for their corruption and buying TWO Gulf Stream Biz Jets with it to cart their pedophile big wigs around while they laugh at taking the people of America for a ride.

They are also known for terrorizing innocent American citizens over the phone trying to get them to pay bills for people they don't know or never heard of. It does not matter that these victims never had an account with these Terrorist or owe them a cent, they will keep calling because they are TERRORIST and that is what Terrorist do. He said the due date of one of the family bill was on the 24th, and of course my mother knew this. He tried to get her to pay through the phone AT THAT MOMENT and give him her credit card number, and checking account number! He constantly insisted when my mother refused, and then he complained about her attitude!

If these Pedophiles are legit then why do they continue to call a number where the person they are on a blood hunt for does not exist? We keep calling them back and asking them what their caller ID says and they confirm that the lst name they see is NOT the same as the last name they are on their blood hunt for but they keep calling. Maybe they are so stupid as to think I can shit this person out my ass for them. No, this all shows me that this is a scam or they wouldn't waste their time calling a KNOWN and CONFIRMED wrong number... Unless they are STUPID. However, after watching the news tonight, they confirmed that Capitol One and most others are STUPID along with immoral and corrupt. Just like their criminal buddies in Washington are that keeps feeding these filthy organized crime organizations tax payer money. This number is legit for Capital One. My boyfriend made some mistakes and was laid off and didn't realize/understand their ridiculous overlimit/overdue fees and how they keep adding on every month and it snowballed into 400 dollars over the limit. Since he was laid off I handle all of his finances and financial matters. About a month ago they were calling non-stop, sometimes up to 6 times a day up to 9 at night. I told them that by law they were not allowed to call that late but they did not care and kept calling. We made several calls trying to make a payment arrangement. When I accidentally went over my limit on another credit card years ago I called them up and they were able to raise my limit so I would not keep getting overlimit fees. Problem Solved. We asked Capital One to do this and they refused. I asked to talk to a supervisor and the supervisor would do nothing for us and they wanted over 150 dollars a month for 3 months to make the account current. We explained to them that I do not make that much money as I am going to school and working full time and he is laid off and we were more than willing to pay each month but could not afford the amount they requested. They still said there were no programs in place to help us and wanted their money right away. All they were willing to do was suspend the past due fees, not alter the amount due or the overlimit fees. Finally after much crying and yelling we were able to get someone willing to help us. She told us we could make a payment of 64 dollars a month and she would suspend the overlimit and past due fees for three months. When that three months was up we were to call back and make other arrangements.

So we made a payment of 64 dollars by the due date of 2/27. They stopped calling and I was relieved. But now we are getting calls again! It is only 2pm and they have already called 3 times! Apparently they are saying the girl we talked to never put a note on our account about the arrangement and they want their money! They said they cannot talk to me about the arrangement and need to talk to my boyfriend but he is out of the country and unable to call. They are more than willing to talk to me when I have my debit card in my hand though. This is getting to be out of control. We have been making the payments on time and yet they are still harassing us and refuse to accept 64 dollars a month. It gets better. One of the ladies I spoke to today told me that the reason we were not able to get help last month was because some jackA** put a note on my Bf's account saying we disconnected our phone number and they were not able to get a hold of us. UMMM, not true. I have had this number for a while and it has never been disconnected for any reason.

I don't know what else to do.
Lonn

This is Capital One, not a scam. They are calling you because you owe them money. Pay your damn bills and quit crying like a buch of girls. You know damn good and well there is someone on the other line when you pick up, BECAUSE THEY WANT THE MONEY YOU OWE THEM!
If they're calling legitimately, why then don't they have their number come up on the caller I.D. as "Capital One" with a phone number that directs back to them when called. Currently the 800-955-6600 doesn't reach anyone who answers, nor does it state you're calling Capital One. If I'm unavailable to answer the phone, and they're interested in getting in contact with me, why not leave a message?

Is it just a ploy to get around the FDCA, which limits collection calls to no more than one telephone call per day at a time convenient and appropriate to the RECEIVING party? By not stating who you are, why you're calling or leaving a call back number or message you can call repeatedly, virtually harassing the receiving party into picking up the phone and dealing with you?

I don't know if this is Capital One or not. If it is I'd be surprised being that I'm receiving calls from them, but haven't had an account with them since 2006. Lonn your comments are both rude and insulting and you seem to make a lot of assumptions when accusing people of wrong-doing when it is clearly this company making these telephone calls who is violating, in either the spirit of, or the letter of, the Fair Debt Collections Act.

If you don't want to go the route of keeping a call diary and getting the police involved, you might ask your phone service if they have call rejection or call blocking. For a nominal fee (either a one-time use or monthly), you dial in using your personal security code and then enter the nuisance phone number and that should stop the calls at least from reaching you. A list of nuisance phone numbers is kept in your phone's memory and can be edited to keep things current. It still might be a good idea to keep a hard copy list of the nuisance calls you receive because often these callers have an arsenal of numbers they can use and your Caller ID will still say either "Toll Free" or Capital One.

So don't get angry. Don't blow whistles into your telephone handset - that never really works anyway. Just get some kind of call rejection system set up through your phone service. If your service doesn't have one, maybe switching to a service that does might be better.

2009-03-10 07:12:45 UTCnon1dis

I've been receiving these calls at least 3 times a day for the last couple of weeks. I don't have any accounts with Capital One in any shape or form. When these calls started, I would pick up the phone, but not say a word. I wanted to hear if there was anything in the background that I could recognize and wait for them to become nervous about the silence and say something. When they did, the person calling would usually as for "David" and then hang up.

Today I stepped up my response to the annoying calls. When they call and you know you don't have any issues with Capital One, record the phone message even if you don't hear anything from their end. Tell the caller that the call is being recorded for the police. They don't know whether or not you are really recording the call. It's up to you to decide if you will actually record the call and whether you tape the actual call and/or make a call diary. This is evidence that can be used against them (even if they don't say anything) to charge them with harassment and take them and/or Capital One to court. All I said was,"This call is being recorded for the police." You don't say "Hi!" or "Hello!" Just start immediately with the mention of the call being recorded. They hung up in my ear very quickly.

So far the evening has been peaceful. The calls stopped around 3:30 this afternoon and no phone has been ringing this evening (almost midnight now).

From all comments it would be best for everyone with a Capital One card or account join the ranks of HSBC, Well's Fargo, BOA & Citi customers, JUST STOP PAYING> Haven't they all scammed enough in bogus, fraudulent and deceptive practices. When will taxpayers realize the last 8 years were all lies? Look at the Madoff scam, the only money lost was what was actually invested, the profits or dividends were imaginary, therefore unclaimable. The cc companies live by the same fairy tale. The balance is never real, it's a vision. The only real tangible is the merchant purchase.

I maintained a zero balance on my Cap. One card for ages. They persisted in jacking up my interest rate either because of, or in spite of this fact. Of course I did not wish to pay 30% interest, so I canceled the card for good. I thought this would stop the solicitation calls, but it did not. Now they persist in calling and hanging up. I am on the 'do not call' list, as I thought that was supposed to stop calls from businesses who you do not have a relationship with ... I guess they just ignore the rules and call anyway.

Oh yea and another thing...I would not give out my Social Security # and or Credit card # to anyone over the phone...You send me legitimate documentation of your companies name in the mail requesting said information and let me verify that you are who you say you are and I **might** give you that information your requesting but I'll be damn if I give you anything over the phone...NOT EVEN MY NAME! LMFAO! I am sure Lonn will not be back again because **It** reminds me of a hit n run driver...

2009-02-17 20:30:18 UTCNunYaBizznez

Hey Lonn
It's to bad your not one of the brighter bulbs in the light socket huh? We pay our bill every month and for some unknown reason we lost track on a months payment and US-Bank calls us like 5x's a day over a $40 payment! I'd say that is kind of about as lame as your dumb comment on here. Then again every comment blog has to have a morron that speaks out of turn. It's okay! we understand! Remember though, "Wise people talk because they have something to say; Fools because they have to say something!"

2009-02-17 19:50:48 UTCS. Smith

We get this number on our caller ID numerous times during the day and evening- week-ends too. Sometimes, they start early in the morning and go late into the night. We've repeatedly told a foreign agent, (his or her English is barely understandable,) to take us off their calling list- the calls continue. We're sick of it! I've got a solicitor block on our number, but this one still manages to get through. What can we do?

2009-02-16 22:57:59 UTCBrenda

They have been calling 2-3 times a day asking for my social security # or 16 digit credit card # I agve them neither and told them I was on the do not call list and when he said he could not remove my phone # from the list without either # I asked for his supervisor-he said the supervisor would say the same thing and hung up on me. I have reported it to the ftc and Citibank as well as the attorney general. I called back and spkoke with another man and he assured me he would take my # off their calling list within 72 hours-that was 2 weeks ago.

I keep seeing that people are saying it's bill collecters and I don't think it is, I mean I am getting this number calling me, and it's pretty annoying. I don't even have a credit card, let along with them, so why would they be calling me to collect? I call back and they ask for a 16 digit card number, and if you don't have that they ask for your SS# and I'm not giving them mine, considering I don't have a credit card through them. To me this looks pretty fradulent, and it is also pretty annoying to have this number call and not even leave a message? Most places are going to leave a message on the answering machine.

This caller apparently WAS from Capital One, but the gentleman actually asked me for my 16-digit credit card number. Um, you're calling ME, you should already have that. I am NOT giving my credit card number to someone who has called themself 'Capital One' OR billing information to pay it by phone. Seriously - this was how the call went. Asked me for the last four digits of my credit card. I said I have two CapOne accounts, so I don't know which one he's calling about. I gave him the the last four of the card I use most frequently, and said that was the account he was calling about, and ASKED ME FOR THE ENTIRE 16-DIGIT NUMBER of the card. Companies constantly warn about NEVER giving your card number to a caller, and their idiots are actually asking for that. I have written to complain, and intend to call as well.

Please don't assume someone is an idiot because they are alarmed by such a call. I issue credit cards from my place of employment and we had a scam involving that very issue just last week.

2008-12-13 18:25:16 UTCDW

This is NOT Capitol One, many of the posts here and for other numbers are actuallly those involved in the schemes to begin with. The problem here has been getting worse and worse.

To: UTCRobert WV that said - "Anyone who receives a call from this number knows why they are calling you. You have a Capital One card and have past due balance. Dont waste our time writing these excuses. Pay your bill or call an attorney."

I do not have a Capital One Card and I never have had a Capital One Card. I have excellent credit and these people call countless times.
once already this morning (12/13 @ 8:55am)
3 times 12/12
2 times 12/11
2 times 12/10
3 times 12/9

So now what?? I called them. They said someone used my telephone as a contact number and they can't give me more info due to privacy laws.

2008-12-09 02:56:24 UTCCHW

Calls 4-5 or more times everyday of the week. I sent a certified, signature required letter explaining my financial difficulty, a token payment to show good faith and a request for no more phone calls. I informed subsequent callers from Capital One/ Signet bank the situation and request for discontinuing calling. One of their representatives acknowledged a cease calling note on the file. This has gone on despite numerous requests when they called. I am struggling to deal with my debts including saving my family home. During this stressful time I have begun to suffer from high blood pressure.

Hey Robert DW - I received a call from this number this morning. I have a capital one card and I DON'T have a past due balance. You are both misinformed and rude. It is obvious from your unpleasant demeanor that you work for a collections agency or some similar occupation that delights in hiring sadistic people.

No one asked for your opinion. In the future, kindly abstain from giving it.

Call on the third day and again today....the 4th day of having this number...they asked for Omar. They were rude and hung up on my when I told them this number was issued to me only 4 days ago and please stop calling it. They hung up on me. I called the number back, and Capitol One answered. They took the number and put it in the system as "wrong number", but I'm not holding my breathe that the calls will stop. Omar, whoever you are....PAY YOUR BILL!

My wife is 32 weeks pregnant and has told Signet this and to stop harrasing her. She cant jump up and down everytime the phone rings. I dont get home till 7:30 and even then I have two other kids to bath and get ready for bed. The thing that pisses me off the most...these mother fuckers don't speak ENGLISH...they can't even get my mother fuckin' name right!!! I got a call from this number. I do have a Capital One Card, but it is current. (I just verified that online to make sure I didn't miss a payment by mistake.) I called the customer service # on the back of my card to see why they are calling me and the rep said that my account is current and there is no record of a call made to me, so even if you do have a past due balance w/ Cap 1, I would be wary of giving your info out to a recording without being able to speak to a live person. Pay online or call the regular 800 # on the back of your card to be extra safe!

2008-08-15 18:32:01 UTCBBB

Somethings going on here but I'm not sure what. I have a Cap1 credit card but I am not behind. I called Cap1 and they confirmed that this is a number they use for solicitation. They suggested that I just ignore the calls. Hey, how about not calling in the first place was my suggestion. They are continuing to call multiple times a day. To the folks at capital one: stop this right away, you are going to lose cardholders like me if you keep it up! Actually, it's too late I am cancelling my card immediately!

2008-08-10 13:25:06 UTCDOCSpanky

Third party collection agent for Capitalone supposedly. Noone is ever there, and they called at 0747 in a Sunday morning. Biggest problem is, I am looking at my capitalone bill, and it IS NOT behind? Everytime I answer, I get put on hold, and after 5 minutes or so it starts asking me to continue to hold. I hang up at this point. I called the number on my statement, and they claimed to have no idea who SIGNET BANK VA was. Sounds VERY fishy.

I usually dont answer when I dont reconize the number but on the 2 or 3 times i Have thinking I would tell them to stop calling it would be a recording telling me to wait for an operator. I am not waiting to talk to someone who called me and they shouldnt be calling and not leaving messages if it is important. I am beginning to think it is probably a scam. It has been going on for weeks now and I am very sick and tired of it. What do we do can we do anything about it.

called and asked for a person unknown to me. My husband just opened an account and are not past due. I think sometimes they just have the wrong number. Funny thing is that I just set up my account for online bill pay and someone calls today for umberto(not my husbands name). I would never give my account over the phone, if they're calling you they should already have it. Plain and simple, if you don't have a C1 card and are not past due if you do have one, and are on the do not call list report them to the do not call registry.

Called me 4 times before I awoke at 7:40 AM on Friday. Called again several times before I awoke on Saturday morning. Left message, saying it was Karen from Capital One with some important personal business information about my account. I returned the call and had to listen to someone who could barely speak English. He kept asking me for personal information after I had already given some of it to him. He just kept wanting more, so I started telling him, "You called me. I'm not giving you any more information until you tell me what was so important that you have been constantly calling me this weekend." He just kept asking for more information and would not tell me why they have been callling me. After informing him several times I was giving him no more information and would hang up if he didn't tell me why he called, I finally kept my promise, told him good-bye, and hung up.

I got this call several times while away on vacation. I do not have nor have ever had a Capital One card or any other dealing with Capital One. I picked up during one call and got a recorded message. I called the number and was asked for my 16 digit Capital One card number. I hit "zero" several times to try and get a person. Next I was asked to enter my SSN. I entered 123456789. I was connected to a person obviously in India who asked for my 16 digit card number. I responded that I did not have one. She asked for my phone number which I gave her. It is a listed number. She indicated that my number would be removed form future calls within 48 hours.

I strongly suspect this is a scam. NEVER CALL AN UNKNOWN NUMBER AND GIVE EITHER A CREDIT CARD NUMBER OR SSN.

I believe these calls have nothing to do with whether or not you have a Capital One card.

I don't owe a dime to Capitol One so I know it's a scam. I did report it to the proper authorities and it is a known scam to all....don't give out any personal or financial information...that is the purpose of the call: to trick you into giving them sensitive info and then they rob you blind.

They will be investigating the matter because it's definately hurting their actual collections effort. DO NOT GIVE OUT YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION TO THESE PEOPLE!

Whoop! They called again. This time I was at my desk and spoke to a person who is obviously in an over seas call center. They were/are indeed looking for someone else. We'll have to see if my explaining that they have reached an internal number for my company has any effect.

2008-02-20 17:11:04 UTCRS

Just a note to say the calls now appear to have stopped. Since I never knew just who Capitol One was attempting to contact I don't know if this was because of my complaint to the 6600 number or a result of my cancellation of my Capitol One card. In either case, I have one less line of open credit and Capitol One has one less customer. Good for me but probably not what Capitol One hopes for.

2008-02-19 21:00:24 UTCJH

This is CapitalOne, and not scammers. With the amount of information they know already (CC numbers/balances, checking account numbers, addresses etc) they wouldn't need to call to scam you. They'd just take your money. This is a legitimate call from CapitalOne providing free same-day over-the-phone payments of overdue balances. I'm actually quite thankful for the call as I had completely forgotten that I had a balance on this card (less than $100) and it was hurting my credit record.

They called me twice. The first call I greeted them and no one answered. The line went dead after 4 seconds. 5 minutes later they called again. I asked about the first call, and apparently the auto-dialer and the call center extensions work seperately and sometimes there is a delay between the two and the CapitalOne employees do not hear anyone on the other end of the line so the call ends. Whatever. Calm down people.

When I found that this number was probably a collection agency for Capitol One I did panic a bit since I have not used a Capitol One card in years. But then I began wondering how they would have gotten my work phone rather than my home phone. I ran a credit report and found no suspicious activity. My Capitol One card had $0 balance and had not been used in 5 years. I called Cap. One and canceled the account altogether as a first step and then called the 6600 number and, after refusing to give my CC# or SS# and explaining the problem, was told that no further calls would be made to the number. 24 hours later... I returned from lunch and found they had called again.

Insanely early call, now my infant won't go back to sleep and is cranky. Guy from CapitalOne saying I'm past due and insisting on payment during that phone call. Trying to get me to say that if I won't pay him that I'd pay later today (I never said that or anything like that). Also told me that because of a past due balance I wouldn't be able to pay online. Kept pushing payment even though I kept saying no. I consider it harassment if I have to say no more than three times.

Seemed fishy to me, so I finally told him I don't pay people over the phone and that if I need to I'll use the automated system to pay then hung up. Went online to check bank account and CapitalOne account (yes, it's past due) and under available credit it says, "We have payment solutions for you. Call us at 1-800-955-6600" so I know it's a legit number. If they call again I will be letting them know that they are harassing me.

I also got a call from this number saying enter my card information, not knowing if this was legit I called Capital one from the number on my credit card. This number is for account services and the are trying to reach you in reference missed payment or over limit fees. It is real and it is Capital One.

2008-01-24 19:29:56 UTCjasonsargo

-One last thing I learned from a nationally-known fraud investigator I worked with: scratch out the whole credit card number on your credit receipts. In some states, it is actually illegal for their systems to print that whole number any more, but if it's there, use a pen and mark it until it's obliterated. Think about it. You just handed the server or clerk or bartender your number and a pretty signature to use if they want. Ask to speak to a manager if they don't know any better, and point out that the transaction number on the number is all they need to add on the tip.

All these ideas are about minimizing loss. You might lose the time you spent on the phone listening to a possibly legit collections call, or the piece of plastic or singles in your pocket, but hopefully, you exposed nothing more that anyone could use against you later on to commit fraud, or identity theft.

2008-01-24 19:29:42 UTCjasonsargo

-A couple more tricks, not necessarily related to these calls: Have a throwdown name and number. Of course my banks and utilities and credit cards have my real information, but there is no reason that my Great Clips stylist needs to know that I'm not Jason Johnson with phone number X in her system who wants a #4 trim on the sides and back. Have a throwdown password. Of course there are anti-spyware and anti-virus programs you should always be using, but some admin at myspace or a local newspaper that requires registration for posting comments on stories should never have access to the same password I use for my online banking or bill-pay service. All these ideas come from the same mind-set I've had since before I was a cop. Heck, I always had a throw-down pen in my pocket for inmates and arrestees to use when their grubby hands had to sign something, and I've always had a pocketful of singles to toss in the air while I turn and run with my credit cards and driver's license in my wallet in the other pocket if I get mugged downtown. Write "See ID" on the signature blank on your credit cards. If your wallet or purse is lost or stolen, you might buy yourself a couple transactions if someone runs to buy a TV with it and the clerk refuses.

2008-01-24 19:29:09 UTCjasonsargo

-As for the calls themselves, if you're still using a landline, you're kind of screwed, but you could always turn down the ring on your phone during dinner or take it off the hook at night (unless you have family that might ever call with an emergency), and screen the calls with Caller ID like usual. My choice to only use a cell phone, and subsequently port my Grandma's landline number to a cell on my plan that is simple enough for her to operate while I take care of her has been one of the best choices I have ever made. It's significantly cheaper, as far as matching the plan to my lifestyle, and it takes me about three seconds to fish the phone out of my pocket, see the 800 number, and hit ignore. I don't have three phones in the house anymore that ring and ring as I get up and walk to them. Hell, I even saved this number in the phone's memory as "Scam", and all the numbers that Comcast (whom I really do owe) calls from in the memory as "Collections". It can't get less annoying than that. And of course, you could eventually just block the number through your provider if this number calls consistently enough to bother with that.

2008-01-24 19:28:14 UTCjasonsargo

Collections agencies have enough information in their system to find you based on what the company your owe provided them when they were hired, so you would never have to confirm account numbers or social security numbers or dates of birth or addresses. If you suspect (Haha!) that it might be a legit collections call, then listen to what they say your options are, but say you will not handle this business over the phone, and demand that they send the information in printed form to the address in their system. THEN HANG UP. Feel free to call the company you owe with the real phone number from your statements, confirm your account status, and see if that account has been handed off to a collections agency, or if you pretty please couldn't just be transferred to an in-house loan or account-service department. If is has been handed off, then they should be able to tell you who that collections agency is, as well as a valid number for them.

2008-01-24 19:27:27 UTCjasonsargo

As a former cop who handled many fraud cases, I see two possibilities. One, this is an unprofessional collection agency (duh, is there any other kind?) with incorrect information in their system, or Two, this is a scam. I was curious which, and that is why I bothered googling the number, but it really doesn't matter which it is, because my response is the same.

Here are some simple options to handle this, while giving the most consideration to protecting yourself from fraud:
-If you really owe somebody something (as anyone in debt honestly knows if they do, to whom, and about how much), do your best to pay it.
-Pay your debts, or any payment, securely. This means YOU initiating the call to the company's real number, on the back of your card or the top of your monthly statements. If you pay online, make sure it's on a website you found on the back of a card or the top of your monthly statements, and make sure when you hit "enter", you're on a page with an "https" address. Make sure any mailing addresses come off the top of your monthly statements, as well. If you actually get a live body on the other end of a call they initiated, use common sense, and don't give them ANY, I repeat, ANY information.

2008-01-24 19:23:08 UTCjasonsargo

I finally answered today, after finally googling the number and finding this site yesterday. Three or four minutes of hold time, female with heavy accent asked for David Armstrong. Said this was in ref to a Master Card, and admitted this was a collections agency. I told her several times that there is no David Armstrong, I have never and will never have a Master Card, to take me off the list immediately, and any further calls would not be legitimate business calls, in accordance with the Do Not Call Registry. She made me verbally confirm for the recording that this was a "wrong number", by making me say that phrase.

By the way, I have had my phone number for two years and these calls started this month, really have never had a Master Card, and have no credit card debts, so anyone on this thread who assumes everyone who posts here is in debt and should just pay is making a blanket statement.

2008-01-21 19:30:17 UTCCarl

It is in fact Capital One Collections. I confirmed with their customer service group 888-817-2970 (I got that number from the CaptialOne.com website). It is 100% Capital One. I just called the number. They answer via automated recording Capital One. No doubt about it. By the way, I have a Capital One Card. "What's in your pocket?"

2007-12-01 13:52:48 UTCVL

Yesterday they called my house 10 times. This is getting to be very annoying. My number is on the do not call list.

2007-11-29 21:18:16 UTCJenny

I've been getting calls 4x a day 5 days a week from this number for about 3 weeks now...

2007-11-29 00:04:30 UTCAndrea

yeah, I DO have a Capital One card, but this number only calls my cell phone and I've only had my cell phone number for a couple of months, and Capital One DOES NOT know my number. Explain that one.

2007-11-28 19:40:41 UTCJim

Capitol One, It would be nice to leave a message when they call but they always hang up.

2007-11-27 20:32:00 UTCSS

Calls come in 4-5 times a day.

2007-11-25 21:16:13 UTCLinda

Called several times. Person said it he was from Capitol One. The person sounded like he was in a "boiler room" and was obviously not from this country. He said that our conversation would be recorded. After he asked me for my SSN and my bank account information you can imagine what I said back to him - #$^*(&@$%^&** (it isn't printable)

2007-11-24 19:21:48 UTCbluealt

1-800-955-6600 is same as 1-800-955-7070. Capital One.

They call my cell 4+ times a day every day, 2 weeks so far. I don't answer 1-800 calls on my cell, but it's very annoying to receive the calls. It's harrassment. I don't have an account with them. I've called their #'s from my landline and explained that they have the wrong #, I don't have an account & to remove my # from their list...to 4 different people, 4 different times. It's hopeless. I will tell everyone I know about Capital One's practices and will never do business with them. Word of mouth is powerful.

All my #'s are listed on donotcall.gov. I am now filing complaints with the FTC, FCC, BBB, donotcall.gov and my state's Attorney General. Some of these you can do online.

I'm also writing an email complaint at abuse@capitalone.com

2007-11-20 01:02:53 UTCnvc

yep Capital One....and it will call 8-10 times a day until 9pm

2007-11-17 19:29:55 UTCRurh

Please stop calling this number as it is new to me.

2007-11-15 23:01:59 UTCArtie

For your information Robert, my Cap One is paid up. This 800 service is not from Cap One.

2007-11-15 22:59:21 UTCArtie Curtis

This 800 Service calls me under different numbers about every 20 to 30 minutes every day until late in the evening.
I found some info on them that they are a septic tank scam but I cant say for sure.
And they never leave a message nor is there a person on the line.

Re: XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX (this is required)

Dear Sir / Madam:
1. The above account (earlier paid in full) was cancelled in writing by this author on or before 07/01/07. "Been calling me daily BEFORE 6AM.

Super annoying. I have a Capital One card but it is fully paid off, so there's no reason they'd be calling me about collecting.

If it was legit, they'd leave a message."

Oh, it's legit Cap1, all righty. I paid up and cancelled my card in writing months ago; they then charged me a renewal fee (?), and have been barraging my home with calls since. Gawd, as a former collector, I LIVE for the day when they call me before 8AM or after 9PM, violating FDCPA. (The autodialer calling constantly, several times a day, may not be a good enough factor, depending on the state; the time frame IS, and can be proven both by caller i/d info and phone records.) I'd like to know if class actions have been undertaken by anyone on either the frequency or timeframe issues. A good attorney could make a bundle.

The name is appropriated.

2007-11-03 01:31:23 UTCD

This is Capitol One; I forgot to send in a payment. They called me 7 times in one day, but never left a message. They started early one morning till late at night. A few times when I did get to the phone,, no one was there... makes me soooo mad. So, when they were finally there... what did I do? I didn't answer them; paid them back for calling me so many times and not talking!

Got called yesterday after a long period of not calling. Not as frequently as it used to be but still annoying. I let my phone go straight to voice mail and they either don't leave a message or simply say "thank you" for a message before hanging up. I let my bf answer the phone once and the speaker claimed to be from Capital One needing my information for some reason. This number has been showing up on my caller ID since the summer!

2007-10-23 17:01:22 UTCAG

I get 5 calls a day 7 days a week. Jeez!

2007-10-22 14:45:08 UTCDE

It is funny how they call our house about 5 times a day. According to the FDCPA (Fair Debt Collections Practices Act)they are only allowed to call your home 1 time a week 1 time a day otherwise it constitutes as harrassment and you can file a law suit against them. That only applies if you pick up the phone. If they are not on the other end that is their problem not yours. Also if you actually speak to someone and they speak to you in an abusive, harrassing, obscene, or violent manner you may also sue them. They must also identify themselves when you answer the phone, if they do not it is misrepresentation, which is also a violation of the act. There are many things a company trying to collect a debt cannot do and what Capitol One has been doing is against the FDCPA.

While a scam seems likely, here's a thought: for those of us who don't have CapitalOne accounts, a previous owner of your phone number might have one.

2007-10-18 03:33:32 UTCjo

calls 4 to 7 timees a day for the last week

2007-10-14 20:40:08 UTCKristen

This is a legitimate #. I have a capital one card and I am behind on payments. Not sure why they have to keep calling 3,4,5 times a day but whatever it's my fault, I owe them money. Crazy how life can be fine one minute and the next you're trying to decide which bills you can "delay" to cover others.

2007-10-10 21:44:59 UTCtgac

I received several calls from this number, the caller never leaving a message, so i called it back. It rang and no one answered. Then, receiving the 3rd or 4th call in a week, I finally picked up the live call and the person on the other end, after a long pause, asked in a very strange voice for "Thomas."
I told him he was dialing the wrong number and hung up immediately. Then i tried the number again and it said it was Capital One. This was highly unusual, as Capital One ALWAYS leaves a message if they are trying to contact me for any reason.

As I am a Capital One customer, this made me uncomfortable, so I immediately called customer service and billing to see if my accounts are current (i could see online that they were, but you never know).

I was on the phone with 4 separate representatives from Billing to Fraud and spent a half hour on the phone with Capital one trying to find out what is going on.

Every department said my accounts are fine, and they said they were not trying to contact me for any reason. Then i got another call today, from the same exact number! So I took the advice of someone on this forum and filed a complaint with the FCC.

I am suspicious of the people on these forums that say that "you should just go ahead and pay your bill!" You should only pay your bill through a secure method that you have already established. People posting nasty fear-mongering messages about paying bills may very well be perpetrators of the hoax!

I'm about to throw my cellphone out the goddamn window. Some dickweed named Alan used to have this number, and apparently a LOT of people want to contact this guy. It just doesn't stop...every day, I get calls for Alan. I guess I need to have my fucking number changed, because telling these people and others OVER and OVER that Alan no longer has this number does nothing. Fuck, I hate cellphones!!!

2007-09-29 02:11:26 UTCiowa

call and immediately hang up on my cell, only rings ling enough to show caller id then hangs up. it is capital one but why? they leave a message that is cut off about every 10th call, usually get about 8 calls a day

2007-09-26 11:24:49 UTCAnonymous

Obviously a scam. Don't ever give someone who calls you your account number(s) or social security number. It is easy for con men to fake caller ID numbers, so calling back this number and getting a bona fide call center proves nothing. When in doubt, hang up and call the number on the back of your card.

Its the Capital One collection group. I answered the first time they called a few months ago when I first missed a payment...

2007-09-13 00:47:52 UTCDG

If you call this number back it's the capital one collection agency informing you of any over draws made and how much you owe them. You will have to input your credit card number but it is a legit number. I don't know why they don't leave a message. Probably because its an automated system that auto dials the numbers put into its system.

2007-09-12 22:56:55 UTCAK

This is a legit number, its capital one collections. if theyre calling you then they at least think you have a past due balance, if you don't then just answer and tell them they have the wrong number.

Capital One called to verify identity information cause I applied for a card with them.

I call back now and it is an automated machine telling me my credit balance and available credit. Both of which were correct, so it should be legit Capital One.

This number is Capital One's Security Department. I tried to make a purchase and the charge was "voided". Card is paid up and the balance easily covered the purchase. I scratched my head and used another card. When I got back to the office there was an email from Vonage letting me know I had a new voicemail from 8009556600. I have been receiving calls from this number over and over. I called Capital One and it is a number for their collections agency. I do not have an account with them. It turns out that the person who had our number before, almost two years ago, is delq. I would suggest the people that do not have cards to call the company and make sure you ID hasn't been stolen. They will ask for you SSN but do not give it to them. They can look up your phone number and check that way.

2007-08-05 22:44:14 UTCC31

stixx & Robert W, shut the fuck up!!

stixx & Robert W are indeed the same person.....he is a plant for Capital One always defending the company. Capital One's credit policies of charging fees purposely will make you fail. Good people sometimes go through hardships in life, not everyone is a deadbeat as stixx & Robert W claim.

2007-08-04 16:17:19 UTChar har har

Stixx and Robert VW are the same guy. I don't have a credit card and I just got this cell phone less than 14 hours ago (pay as you go wal*mart special). There's no way this is related to anything legit, considering no one has my phone number! All in all, if you've a debt that needs to be paid, call the number on your bill. If someone calls you, don't give them any information what-so-ever. With the name, CC # and experation date, they can buy things online and you end up with the bill... then you really will get collection calls lol. Never give this information to random numbers. This cell phone number didn't even exist until I registered it last night and I had to be to work at 4am, so how a company would be able to get this number and call me regarding a collection issue, BEFORE MOST PEOPLE ARE EVEN AWAKE! Let alone without even a single business day gone by, is silly. There is no way that this is legit, anyone that happens to post otherwise is another scammer.

2007-07-19 17:46:31 UTCC31

It's Capitol One's in-house debt collection number. If you fell behind on the payments like I did unfortunately, this number can also rout you to their slimy 3rd party collection agency (GC Services) to collect the payment. GC Services will lie to say they are a "Pre-Legal Department" for Cap One. As most educated consumers that understand the collection laws, we all know it is a flat out lie. I sent those slimy bastards a C&D letter certified. Remember, never agree unless you have it in writing. Also visit budhibbs.com to understand on how slimy 3rd party debt collectors will do anything to separate you from your hard earned $$$.

2007-07-18 19:31:10 UTCRick

This is way beyond ridiculous! I have received, up until 15 seconds ago, 18 calls since 7:30AM this Sunday Morning. I am not dodging them, I have answered them each and every time and told them that they were mistaken. I even called the Capitol One customer service number and they tell me that there is nothing they can do, as the collectors are set up on auto-dialers somewhere in Virginia.

When these low-life people call they refuse to give their name or the actual company they work for. The number is 1-800-955-6600 and I got one person to give the term ANI. This is a clear violation of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practice Act, not the mention that under the Texas Penal Code, Section 42.07 (4), the caller could be prosecuted criminally.

I work for a law firm and I really would like information about these people, if anyone knows. Since they refuse to disclose the information, which by the way IS ANOTHER violation of the FDCPA. Would love to sick the AG on these people and possibly even file a Plaintiff's Original Petition against them!!!!

This number called my boyfriends phone leaving an auto message from capital 1 several times a day for a long time on his cell phone. He has a capital 1 card, but his payment is current. He would call back and they couldn't figure why they would be calling him (his account was fine). I had even gone to great lengths complaining, reporting it to C1's fraud department, etc.

So, the other day, he yet again called the number, bypassing entering his account #. Finally - the guy asked if he knew a "mr. John Doe". Evidently his brother had used his number as a primary contact#!!!!!!!!!

So, perhaps check into that. Just tell them not to call, it is Capital One.

2007-06-29 13:44:30 UTCLuci

Those of you who are saying that its because we have a past-due balance are not correct. I have no past due balance, although there have been several times when they wrongfully charged me for one.

2007-06-29 13:42:39 UTCLuci

It is the Capital One collection department. Don't answer! :-)

2007-06-24 13:12:32 UTCsue

calls have been coming in for over 2 months. I answered the phone this morning 6/24 at 8:24 am. Someone finally answered. Told me I have an outstanding balance from November. My Account was paid in full December 06.

2007-06-21 23:23:15 UTCTom

This is from Capitol One collections. It's unprofessional, yes -- but it's them.

If you don't have a Capitol One account, then they have the wrong number in their database and they don't know any better. Call back, press # and explain to them that they have the incorrect number. To be honest though, as someone who works in collections, I know that often the wrong number may be re-entered into their system later.

Capitol One is very clear about how they handle negligent accounts in their policies. I'm not here to say who is or isn't responsible -- I have an over-due balance and receive the calls as well.

If you call their call center back, you may also find that their representatives aren't the brightest, most with-it you'll ever deal with as well. A few months ago, when I called to split my balance in half with two post-dated checks, I had a very hard time trying to accomplish just that!

I got same problem like everybody else on my cell phone. Call w/o answer. Many times a week. When I tried to call back, it sounds like a fax machine. So annoying! Lately I stop answering that call, but somebody gotta do something about this scam. Thanks.

2007-06-19 14:48:21 UTCBN

I get calls from this number on my cell phone several times a day every weekday. i have never made a late payment in my life and don't own a capital one card. it says its a data number and i can't even answer it. i've had fax machines call me before and have answered only to get a machine, but my cell will only let me send a busy tone to this number and says it can't answer data calls. this is really annoying me. the ringtone is a text ringtone too not a normal call tone. i've been putting up with it off and on for months. anyone have any thoughts besides scam artists for capital one?

2007-06-18 23:33:27 UTCJC

They called and siad I was $160.00 over due and had to pay now, not online. My account was acctualy $60.00 overdue. Were they trying to make $100.00 off of me? Sounds like it. I knew once things go to dept it is open for many companies to take over C1 debts. That must have been their fee. It is always cheaper and safer to pay directly to c1 if you still can.

Update: So far, NOTHING has worked to delouse myself of these pests, including blasting Nirvana, answering but not speaking, just placing the phone by the TV, or politely answering when they call and requesting they don't bother me again since I'm on the Do Not Call List. So far today, I've made that last request to them FIVE TIMES obviously to no avail.
My neighbor swears being sweet and polite has always worked for her.
Someone here suggested calling the back of the credit card and speaking to customer service, so that's my next move.
By the way, since going on the Do Not Call List I've been getting more calls from new numbers, including someone who speaks only German from some off-shore outfit.
During the day, it doesn't matter who calls because I'm usually not here to hear the phone. It's the early weekend morning calls that I find objectionable.
I'm wondering if the neo-Luddites have been right all along.

2007-06-07 15:59:47 UTCMaryC

Robert WV is incorrect. I do not have a Capital One card. Obviously I do not have a past due bill. FYI, I am getting the calls on my cell.

OUTSOURCING!!!! That's what they do to keep Americans out of work. That's y we get all of the calls. I don't care how behind a person is on their bills there is no justifiable reason for Capital One or any other bill collector to call me at 3:05 am!!!! The cool thing for me is they left a message. And I recorded it and filed a complaint with the BBB, attorney general's office & sent them a cease and desist letter by certified mail. And after all of that, they still call me...Bad things happen to good people. There's no need to explain your personal situation to anyone. Good credit bad credit it doesn't matter it all equals DEBT, apparently we all have some type of debt rather it be house payment, car note, credit cards or etc. That's still not a reason for anyone to call you over 30 times a day regardless if, they leave a message or not. And never give your credit card number or social to anyone. I tell them you called me so you should already have all of my information. Kevin had some good advice. I'm just killing time until the next time Capital One calls me. O, and they will call. I cancelled my cc with them. I had been with Capital One for over five years. It was a sad death but someone had to do it....Good Luck to everyone...The way to stop the calls is to ensure Capital One and others they don't controll you is to cancel their cards at the first sight of harassment. This is too much to go through just to have a credit card. God bless you all.

2007-05-23 15:44:15 UTCc-man

This is the COLLECTIONS department of Capital One. Either you have a balance that is past due by >30 days or you need to call an Identity theft organization (comsumer.gov). Either way TAKE ACTION. If you called Capital One, it is very likely that you did not reach their COLLECTIONS department and they will have no record of calling you. If you receive numerous calls it is because the auto dialer that is calling your number does not record a no answer as a successful call and will continue to re-dial until you answer. By the way, I did have a past due balance.

2007-05-21 22:28:02 UTCCris

2007-05-07 22:27:30 UTCTRL

I called the 800-955-6600 number back and got a recording that said, "please enter your 16-digit account number". I entered 16 random numbers which was on file with them and I was told to re-enter my 16 digit account number. I again entered a different 16 random numbers and then was told to enter my social security number. Well, I wasn't about to enter my SSN. I just entered 10 random numbers and the recording said something about it not matching their records and to please re-enter. Well, at that point, I hung up the phone. If the info that was entered didn't match their records, why not respond back with, "please hold for the next available representative"? The recording never gave any indication that it was Capital One. I have no clue who this number belongs to.

I've done some limited research as to who might be behind this number and I found this at another website "July 1-5: National Conference in Phoenix at the Arizona Biltmore Resort and Spa.
Room Rates single/double $105 Tripl/quad $115 & $7 service fee
1-800-955-6600" This was found at "hri.org" Now how does this relate to a credit card company? Interesting. Whoever is behind this number gets points for persistence. I've gotten more calls per day from them than perhaps any other number. I wonder who else "they" claim to be...

2007-05-05 14:39:59 UTCMH

I don't know if this is really Capitol One. First of all, they say they will never call and ask for your cc #, they know it. So I believe it to be a scam. I am not over due on my account, nor have I ever been. I just checked it online and there is no activity on my card other than payments, I haven't used it in months. When you call the number back it automatically asks you to give your cc #. Capitol One would not ask for that information unless you called the # on the back of your card. Don't fall for this, it isn't secure and could be a scam.

When Cap1 wanted to increase my credit limit, they usually send me a letter. Once when we were paying down our card to zero and they called/wrote in a complete PANIC because they thought we were going to cancel the card or have a zero balance. I got "how can you DO this to us??" Moaning and groaning. Amusing actually.
Usually, the caller is a person with a pronounced accent who reads off a script. Therefore, you can't request that they don't call but rather send snail mail because anything not on their note cards confuses them. What I've done when I get several calls from the same number is place the phone by the iTunes and blast the Beastie Boys or Nirvana. Or put the open line by the TV and let them listen to reruns of the O.C. The calls from whatever number dry up quickly after that.

i have 4 cap one cards and have had for years and these guys do not call about one late payment, your next bill shows a late and/or over limit fee and minimum due with your normal due date and anytime they have called my caller ID shows Cap 1 and there is a person there, this call goes to my answering machine and before i can finish saying please leave a message they hang up so that discounts the auto dialer and not reaching a live person theory and you never give info out to person calling you they should already have that and i work in credit and collections and no you may not call as many times a day as you like least not under Texas law and to have CC in Texas you have to agree to our consumer laws check it out on the Attorney General website if you need fair credit collection info

By they way... to those who are saying that this is a billing number and my card is overdue:
I don't have a Captial One card. I have never had a CapOne card. My wife and I have a single Citi card and there is never an outstanding balance.

2007-02-15 12:15:47 UTCCeM

Two calls within two minutes of each other to my cell phone. Nobody on the line when I pick up.

2007-02-13 22:59:35 UTCDS

I don't answer any numbers I don't know and the caller did not leave a message, however I do have a Cap One card with a past due balance, so sounds like that's what this is.

It also sounds like they use an automated dialer which only switches over to a real person if someone answers, so that explains the not leaving a message.

Since it is automated and relies on a database which probably contains many errors, old information, etc., it's also no surprise that many of the calls are in error. But this is most likely legit.

I have a Capital One account, and have been late a couple of times, but I have received non-stop calls from this number for 9 months! Every time I answer it, there is no one on the line, or I get a message to hold to speak to someone (who nevers seems to answer). They call 7-days a week, at least 3 times a day. I'm tired of it!

2007-02-04 13:22:42 UTCap

no message, did not leave recording, as you would expect from a legitimate call

2007-02-03 14:08:44 UTCMT

These people call from 8:00a.m. to 9:00p.m. at least 4 times per day and sometimes more! Our Capital One bill is NOT late and, in fact, I made another payment ontime today, and I have received 3 phone calls. It's only 2p.m!!!! They never leave a message either! I don't have time for this crap!

2007-01-30 11:50:02 UTCWayne

I've been getting this for months, but found a device that eliminates it. Check out person-to-person.net. It works great! (And no, I'm not part of this company and get no benefit from touting it here.)

2007-01-30 10:20:12 UTCCole C

Called 2 times. No one on the other end. 1-30-07

2007-01-28 12:01:50 UTCAlonzo

I received a call on my NEW cell phone number. I just changed it from a Phoenix, Arizona number to a Las Vegas, Nevada number. A recording came on and said to hold the line as a party was trying to reach me. I held on and a guy came on the line asking for a "Adam". I said he had the wrong number and he proceeded to ask if this was the "Ramirez" residence. I said no and he got an attitude, saying that I was lying! I told him NO! again and hung up on him.

2007-01-27 18:01:58 UTCWW

Three calls a day almost everyday last week.
No message...

2007-01-27 13:38:29 UTCJH

This number has called me a minimum of 4 times a day, 7 days a week. I've answered-there's no one there. I've said I'm on the DNC list..they keep calling.

2007-01-26 09:35:29 UTCwm

Many calls

2007-01-24 09:04:28 UTCKG

Never no who is call bt they call all day and night.

2007-01-22 09:20:15 UTCJLC

I am behind a payment from Capital One - thats why they call. If you think its a scam, call the 800-number on the back of your credit card and talk to a real person. They are a lot nicer and less pushy when you call them. What I would do is get a Tracphone just for debt collectors that you KNOW you owe money too. Call them and ask to change your contact information, and have them change it to the Tracphone number. At least then they wont bother your personal phone. In the end though, I know I have to just pay my bill on time, haha.

2007-01-21 18:00:35 UTCmike

Non stop 4-5 times a day, even on sat and sun.

2007-01-19 19:25:46 UTCsmitty

3-5 calls per day, first one is usually before 9AM. Calls also received on Saturdays and Sundays, also before 9AM.

2007-01-13 16:26:35 UTCchris NY

they have been calling my wifes cell phone for weeks now, no we don't have a C1 account. Always no person on the call, just some machine....

2007-01-10 12:03:19 UTCJoe

I get called from these people all day long and it's frustrating. I'll be switching my voip soon and I'll have a block feature that I will use against these types of calls. Can't wait.

2007-01-09 21:07:00 UTCTom Y

One last comment. I have been a capital one customer for years without complaint. I have been late on payments several times without issue. I just get bills letting me to catch back up. I have been called by other credit companies when my credit was in a rears. They leave messages. These guys don't. If you WERE foolish enough to try to correct your backpayments while talking to these guys then you better call C1 right away and confirm it. Whatever problems C1 has as a company they are not directly responsible for this. Enough said.

2007-01-09 20:51:53 UTCTom Y

I guess it only feels like thy have been calling for a month, it's actually just the past week. They have called three times a day almost every day.

I have been getting 2 calls a day from this number since mid dec 2006. This is one of CapitalOne's phone numbers but the caller id says "FREE TOLL". They never leave a message. I never pick up for an unknown number and especially if they don't leave a message.

I received a call from this number 11:56 AM EST on 1/4/07. The call was placed to my cell phone in which I have answer tones set up, clearly forcing the automated system to believe it was an answering machine picking up, as the phone only rang long enough to register a call.

2006-12-29 19:22:46 UTCPam

Also, in response to the debt collector who posted and as an FYI to everyone;
Check the Attorney General site for your state. Laws about what a collection agencies and collection departments can do and say vary from state to state. They have to adhere to the rules in your state when calling you, not the state they are calling from.

Hey "Robert WV" I don't HAVE a Capital One card.

2006-12-15 17:24:46 UTCKD

Called Capital One today, they verified the number as one of theirs, but had no idea why they called, as I haven't missed a payment with them in over 18 months.

2006-12-15 16:29:13 UTCmimi

They keep calling asking for person that had this number before. I've had this # for 4 months, and keep telling them not to call anymore as this person does not live here. They call daily. I've emailed Capital One and no response. I would never do business with this company.

2006-12-15 00:33:19 UTCJD

Capital One calling about a late payment/no payment

2006-12-13 20:47:37 UTCGeoff Chang

This caller is malicious! They keep calling several times a day. I registered with the National Do-Not-Call list, so when this caller called, I could only "deny" this call instead of picking it up. Yet they keep calling. So annoying

2006-12-08 22:13:18 UTCTricia H

I do not have a Capital One card but my son does who hasn't lived here in 2 years. We received 24 calls between 11/28 and today, 12/8. It just gives phone number and there is a recorded msg asking to wait for the attendant.

Didnt answer the call. I called the number back later and automated system asked me to enter my cc number. I did not. Then it asked for my ss number. i did not. Finally after punching # I got to a real person who identified herself as a capitol one representative. I do not have a capitol one card, so I hung up the phone.

2006-12-04 22:58:36 UTCandrober

We just got a new phone number about a month ago and over the past 2 weeks have been getting calls from this tel, just as most of you have described. And my husband and I have never had Capital One cards.

So I just called them, the computer asked me for my cc number and ss number. I pressed 0 a bunch of times, got a live person, told her we just got this phone and never had a Cap One card.

She asked me for my name. I told her Id researched this online and wasnt comfortable giving out personal info. She pasued, then said shed take our names off their list.

We shall see...

2006-12-04 00:01:44 UTCJulie Butts

2006-12-02 20:01:10 UTCRyan

Calling 3-5 times a day isnt harrassment, its with int he law, its if we call more then once in a 20 minute period is when it turns into harrassment ;)
oh and pay your damn bill, we dont belive a word you say

2006-12-01 23:27:10 UTCdeuce

The number calls 8-10 times per week asking for my Capital One credit card or social security. There is no way to speak with a customer representative and find out what the call is regarding.

2006-11-27 18:09:44 UTCin debt

it's capital one calling, 'capone' as i call them... means you're behind on payments. like me...

2006-11-27 14:08:25 UTCJeffrey Mason

This is capial one Collections. Call capital one fraud dept. they will tell you it is a real number and that you have a past due balance. Mine was 50 cents lol so they call 5 times a day for their 50 cents lol.

2006-11-26 17:24:45 UTCmiriam

I do not have a Capital One account. I have excellent credit(796) and recently applied for a card to get rid of 2 others that do not give rewards. They turned me down. Now I get a call daily...have yet to answer as I do not answer unknown numbers.

2006-11-20 18:03:36 UTCSteve CA

I hate to say it but Robert is right, it was Cap one and I was late on payment.

2006-11-20 13:35:29 UTCJW

Robert from WV doesn't know alot about collections. The skip tracing tools that are used can be highly inaccurate, and regardless of how many times you tell these people it's the wrong number, they still continue to call. By the way, these calls can be reported to the state's Attorney General.

I see here that it's capital one, but whenever we answer all they do is say to "please hold the line, we have an important call for you" and they keep saying that over and over until eventually after about 30 min they say we're sorry we cannot connect the call and hang up.

2006-11-07 08:34:41 UTCga

hey robert wv...
why don't you get off your rich ass and take a look at what a crap hole the u.s. has become....the illegals are wiping us out...its people like you that are doing it....and this garbage goverment we have.

2006-11-02 08:32:04 UTCCat

First of all, I do have a Capital One card. I was late with my payment this month because I had to make some repairs to my car. If this was a legitimate Capital One business call, then they would leave a message for me to call them back and then surely I would do so. However, calling me 4 times a day and not leaving a message is a little fishy to me.
To Robert...people get into financial difficulities. I guess you must be perfect or a millionaire.

2006-11-01 17:02:37 UTCJay

My wife pays the bills, and when I checked capital1 online, sure enough, we were late. The thing is we were only a few days late, and our card has the payment protection plan.

So I'm wondering also...why wouldn't they leave a message if they were Cap1? Then again, how would a scammer know I actually had an overdue bill?

I don't know, but I paid my bill online. I won't give out any info over the phone unless I call them.

2006-10-26 17:36:27 UTCNotAnIdiot

Robert WV is probably one of the scammers who wants you to give your CC info out over the phone when he calls you.

Robert, how should we be sure we're receiving a call from C1, if even the number is unlisted. This would be very unprofessional. Furthermore, a professional company would LEAVE A MESSAGE saying to call them back. The scammers don't leave a message, because they don't want you to call C1 back, because then they wouldn't get your CC info.

2006-10-19 12:23:47 UTCJeff NC

This Is A Scam...They Want To Get Your Card # and Personal Information. Think I'd Fall For That.....HA HA Think Again!!!

2006-10-17 12:55:55 UTCAnon

How do I stop them from calling?

 1. Ask the unwanted caller to stop calling and put you on their do not call list (they are legally required to comply).
 2. If your number is registered with the National Do Not Call Registry you can file a complaint with the FTC.
 3. Block them with a call blocker:
