How do I stop them from calling?
- Ask the unwanted caller to stop calling and put you on their do not call list (they are legally required to comply).
- If your number is registered with the National Do Not Call Registry you can file a complaint with the FTC.
- Block them with a call blocker:
Uniden DECT1288 blocks up to 20 numbers, plus Private and Unknown, with the reject tone, without ringing the phone.
Panasonic KX-TG106 blocks up to 30 numbers, plus all unidentified callers, with a busy tone, after the phone rings once.
JF Teck Caller ID with Ring Controller blocks up to 70 numbers, and can be set to always allow up to 100 to ring through.

DO NOT switch to Accent Energy................I just got my bill today and it was $76 MORE than if I had stayed with my local company. They charge more, not less, for electric energy, and they stated my bill would be 5% less when I switched. I would like a refund of the $76..........does anyone know how I would go about getting that?
If so, email me at mojoalma@comcast.net. Thanks very much.
I'm an idiot and actually let myself get scammed by them (i.e. I gave them my account number). I'm assuming I'm not the only one (though I feel pretty stupid). I realized it was a scam just a few minutes after I hung up and immediately called Con Ed. They put a block on my account to prevent Accent from switching me off, so all is well. But jesus that was the trickiest phone call and I can't believe I let them fool me.
Hello,
I just got off the phone with a Con Ed representative and I wanted to email you to let you know what happened.
Earlier today someone who works for me said that he received a phone call from Con Ed asking for me. This is strange--how would Con Ed have his cell phone number for my personal account? (And my company doesn't pay for the Con Ed bill.)
Then I got a call from the person.
I called Con Ed...they said they're not calling customers, nor are they outsourcing the work.
That was a week ago.
I just got a call from the scam artists again. I asked for their phone number and they told me it's 866 890 8208. When I called the number it connects to a company called PJAX, a trucking company--obviously, they just picked a number and it has nothing to do with this scam.
I told them I'm not interested and to put me on the do not call list.
I have a feeling that they'll call back, and when they do I'll record the conversation and let them know that I'm doing so and that I'm going to hand the tape over to the FTC.
I got suckered by them too. I saw 646, not some out of area number on the ID box, so I felt OK. Same story as others on this page. Their line: "We're working with Con Ed." Or "We're part of Coned." What a fraud. They offered 6 mos of discounted rate; thereafter the rate would go to a "fluctuating rate." I looked at the con ed bill. Not bad: 13c per kwh. So, why bother to change, especially, as they'd be hell to transfer from, as other blogs warn. Thank god for this sit and others like it. Yucch, they suckered me in to giving them my con ed number. I'm going to con ed tomorrow to make sure that I stay with them.
A shady telemarketing company trying to pass themselves off as Con Edison. Calls repeatedly and will not stop.
They've been calling every day or so. I've asked to be taken off their list every time. Sometimes they say that ConEd instructed them to call me. The man usually has a foreign accent, and there's lots of background noise. I've now received more than 30 calls from them in the past two months - sometimes at night, even after telling them I have a baby who is awakened.
I am considering changing my number. For now, the phone is unplugged completely and only voicemail will be picking up. I'm amazed one company can cause so much trouble.
20 calls in less than 30 days, at all hours of the day. Frustrated them to the point of them hanging up on me by asking them where they were calling from. Dublin, Ohio They replied. (That is just a routing station, they are really in the philopines).
I had received atleast 20 calls over a one month period. So I started asking them questions like where are you from, Dublin, Ohio they said. (A call to Accent Energy in Texas revealed that they do have a calling center in Dublin, Ohio, but it is just a routing station to an overseas call center). Name the largest city in Ohio where you are located, silence, then, Dublin, Ohio. Nine times I asked, finally their suppervisor, who had taken over the phone call said, Ohio City is the capital of Ohio. Wrong, try again I said, silence. Name any large city in Ohio then, silence. Why do you want to know, we are all philopionos here. Then tell me your calling from the Philopines then, not Dublin, Ohio, just be honest, I can\\\'t trust you if you can\\\'t even tell the truth as to where you are from. Silence, Dublin, Ohio. Maybe that is to hard a question, how about naming one state that borders Ohio, can you answer that? Ohio City borders Ohio. Laughing I said again, wrong, try again. This went on for atleat 20 minutes, finally I said, I can\\\'t believe that if you are in Dublin, Ohio you do not know one major city or any state that borders Ohio. What is it that you want from us, she asked. I didn\\\'t call you, you called me!!!! Answer the question. Silence, again. How about you take me off your calling list now. Very good, click. She hung up on me!!! Haven\\\'t had a phone call from then since.
I received a number of calls from Accent - even after asking a supervisor there to put me on their DNC list. So, let the fun begin.
I called Dana Saucier, their CMO a few months ago to complain. From my corporate experience, I figure that he's responsible for call center operations. Its easy to navigate their corporate voice-mail system to get his office. To his credit, I got a personal message from him the next day advising that I'd be off their list.
I wouldn't be posting here if it'd worked.
This IS scary. Real intimidating, and definitely crooked as they definitely claimed to be Con Ed. When I questioned why Con Ed would need my information, the woman became angry and hung up.
And I, too, am on the apparently utterly ineffective "do not call" list.
They have been calling our business for weeks, several times a week. I thought they were Con Edison and the call might be legitimate, but never had time to address the matter. I finally decided to do some research on the web and found this site. Next time these persistant energy whores call I'll ask them to put us on the no call list.
Rec'd call at office saying Rose Webb from Con Edison asking me to confirm rate class on my con ed bill to get a discounted supply rate.
Multiple messages, some seeming to say that this IS Con Edison.
The THIRD time today that Access Energy called I picked up, advised them that I am on the Federal & state DoNotCall lists, and that they are breaking the law by continuing to call me. The caller confirmed that my number would be put on their no call list and "guaranteed" that I would receive no further calls from Access. We'll see ...
I called ConEdison about this and they advised me to complain to the Public Service Commission. I'll give that a try.
I have been receiving numerous calls from them (Accent Energy) for the past three or four weeks ... DAILY!!! Sometimes they leave a message. The last one was from a Richard Garcia. Other times my caller ID shows numerous calls from them with no message left. I called Garcia today (28 Feb '07), and notified him of my Nat’l DNC List registration. I found it very upsetting that he was able to see the phone number I was calling from, as it’s a “Blocked” number, and is not supposed to register on anyone’s caller ID. How safe are we when scammers such as these are privy to our private information? What’s next, our SS#’s and our bank accounts?
To emphasize my point, I informed Garcia that I was taping this call as I previously had done with other calls from his company, and sending it on to my attorney should further action be necessary. He assured me that he was removing my number from their ‘call list’ and the removal will be effective immediately. Hopefully, this will end the annoyance.
Oddly, I don’t even have a Con Ed account since my gas & electric are included in my rent, and paid for by my landlord, of whose account number ... I haven’t a clue!
2 messages left saying they were "calling regarding my con ed bill" (scary); I too am on the do not call list.
I received a voice message, from a Rose Parker of Access Energy asking me to call her @ 866-734-0568 in reference to my ConEd bill. Glad I checked here first. Thanks all, for the info, etc.
This is a SCAM. Do not provide info, especially your Con Ed account number!!
I received a call today from someone at 800-815-7053 who said they were with Accent, working WITH Con Ed. They said they needed to verify I was getting my rebate, and wanted my Con Ed account number to do so.
A quick search of the web, and calls to Con Ed and the New York State Public Service Commission verified that this is a SCAM. According to them, many complaints about Accent’s questionable marketing practices are on record.
Giving my account number would likely have resulted in my energy bill being “slammed” from Con Ed to Accent Energy (a competing provider, not a partner). Slamming is when a company switches you to their services under false pretenses, without your permission.
I get 2-3 calls a day from these people! This has been going on for months & they are very persistant. We are already on the "do not call list." So, I finally reported them. Hopefully, that will stop the calls.
con ed trying to get me to use their service, and calling me at work!
They called me three times today...I have previously reported them to the donotcall list and I keep doing so.
I got my third call from them this afternoon and didn't answer it.
Last time they claimed to be a PART OF CON EDISON calling me about switching my electric provider. Well, they are not a part of Con Ed, they are a competitor--so their call is simply criminal fraud.
If we report enough of them to the FTC (I'm on the DNC list) maybe they'll get their phones taken away.
Would you switch your utility provider to a company that sells by fraud? Spread the word.
they call constantly, and each time i ask them to take our number off of their call list. they ask who is responsible for the con ed decisions, but they are not con edison.
Today's call: 9/22/06, 10:25am.
Call several times a week. Energy company trying to get me to switch from Con Ed.
looked at caller id - they called 7 times in one day!
They keep calling me -- I called them and told them to stop, that I was on the do not call list -- they called again today
I was called by them repeatedly over last few weeks... I took the call several weeks ago and politely asked them to take me off their list. Well, they called again today tried to make me thing they WERE 'Con Edison'. When I explained I was already contacted and asked to be taken off their 'list', they hung up on me. I filed a complaint with donotcall.gov (though this will probably do nothing)
They called again this morning. The call went to my answering machine. I called back and they were very abrupt when I told them to take me off their do not call list and hung up on me.
I received a call 9/13, 9:24 AM which went to my answering machine. No message was left. When I called back I was told that they are contacting all Con Edison customers (they are an energy company). When I told them that I was on the national do not call list and asked why they are calling me, they said that they were not aware that they couldn't call.
