total scam, gave them a tongue lashing

2011-11-10 00:44:17 UTCSCAM

This is a scam. Just got off the phone with Wells Fargo and they verified. Do not call the number. Call Wells Fargo immediately to report it.

2011-10-11 17:53:12 UTCMike

If you received a call from this number I recomend you call the customer service number on the Wachovia website.

2011-09-06 14:56:59 UTCStephanie

it is a legit number. I called it and waited on hold, and after sitting there for a while I pulled up this site and got really freaked out, so I hung up and called the CS number and sure enough someone had used my card for 786.00, I was then transfered to Fraud by CS and they had to close my card and send a new one.

2011-09-06 14:31:53 UTCAaron

I also received a call from this number regarding an account ending in 4 numbers. None of my accounts with them ends in the numbers they listed, but my credit card did end in those 4. I guess anyone has access to the last 4 of someones credit card?
To verify some other people's comments, this is NOT a number to contact Wachovia. Do not call it back.

2011-09-04 15:37:48 UTCT.L.

This is a scam just got the voice mail last night. They would not transfer me to a live person until my info was verified. I hung up as soon as they requested my zipcode. This is NOT real--a real fraud dept. does not verify your phone number, or your zip code. They will also email you and find other ways to contact you. BEWARE

2011-08-22 18:14:02 UTCLarry

Got call reporting that there was fraud on my credit card but they used an old account number and zip code

2011-08-18 21:33:52 UTCTL

I really don't know what to think of all the posts saying it's a scam and some say it's not. It really gave me a scare after I verified all the info with Wachovia even after I received an email from Wachovia rep.

Here is the rep repsonse:

Thank you for contacting Wachovia. My name is Tanisha G, and I am happy
to assist you.

I certainly understand your concern and apologize for your hold time
when you contacted us via telephone.

The phone number 800-204-3814 is legitimate and it is necessary to call
this number to verify recent ATM/Check Card transactions that posted to
your account. Regretfully, this department does not correspond via
e-mail. The phone number we have on file for your account is
---------. Please enter this number when prompted in order to be
connected to our Fraud Prevention Department.

If you still experience difficulty calling the number above, please
contact our Loss Prevention Department at 800-359-8977 for assistance.

I appreciate your business and the opportunity to address your concerns.
Thank you for banking with Wachovia.

Sincerely,

I called Wachovia 7 times to all the legitimate number and also emailed them regarding this automated call from 800-204-3814. They all told me that this is their automated call center for fraud transaction to your bank account. This number is in fact belongs to Wachovia.

2011-08-05 13:29:01 UTCCoast

This is a wachovia number I called and spoke to someone at my branch and they verified that it is indeed the wachovia fraud department.

2011-07-25 22:28:58 UTCJB

They called and I thought it was real, until I realized they were saying my old card number and the 3 zip codes I could choose from were from where I lived a few years ago. I guess they have my number, but need the right zipcode to use it... that card number is deactivated anyways. Still, kinda scary that they make it sound so legit.

2011-07-09 01:03:26 UTCLaurie

Definitely a scam! I did not give them any info but called 1-800-Wachovia instead and they said there was NO fraudulent activity on my account and my account did NOT show that a Wachovia rep had even contacted me.

2011-07-06 19:19:23 UTCBrian

This is a legitimate call from Wachovia. I received it just a few seconds after making an online payment. Seeing an unknown 800 number, I let it go to voicemail and, like most of you, was immediately suspicious when I heard the automated message regarding my account. I went to the Wachovia website and found their number for reporting fraud, (888) 647-3648, who verified it was legitimate and transferred me over to the automated service where I was asked to verify information about myself and three recent transactions - the most recent transaction, my online payment, had been declined until I completed this process.

2011-06-02 16:04:01 UTCCynthia

800-204-3814 is a scam - don't respond at all, hang up immediately - I called Wachovia customer service 888-647-3648, they verified 800-204-3814 is not a valid Wachovia number

2011-05-26 03:00:02 UTCSome guy

Anyone who says this isn't fraud is in on the scam. call 1-800-Wachovia

2011-03-22 21:36:27 UTCJoyce

I too received a call today, 3/22/11 at 220pm (Pacific). The recorded female voice had my name and the last 4 digits of my old bank card. So, I Googled the number then found the collective experiences of everyone here extremely helpful. Just got off the phone with my new bank and am spreading the word. I hope someone gets these crooks!!

2011-03-03 19:31:41 UTCcandy

This is Wachovia's Fraud prevention. Someone was really trying to use my card illegally. Went to bank and they had notes in system. Not a scam.

2011-03-01 15:13:00 UTCSusan

I found a message on my answering machine stating that the Wachovia Fraud department had called. The above phone number was given and a request was made that I contact them as soon as possible. I called 1-800-Wachovia instead to find out if this was a legitimate call from the bank. It turns out it was Wachovia calling to make certain that a recent charge to my account had been authorized by me. The number is for the Wachovia Fraud department but you can always call 1-800-Wachovia if it would make you feel more secure.

2011-02-23 14:55:21 UTCJ

I received a call from this number today and was unsure of whether it was a fraud or not. I called 1-800-Wachovia and it turns out that the call was legitimate.

2011-02-19 20:55:27 UTCNG

This is Wachovia's fraud department. They called me after my debit card had been compromised. This is a legitimate phone number from Wachovia. If they are calling you, they think you have been a victim of fraud.

2011-02-16 00:22:24 UTCJeff

I too received a call from this number. Automated message asking to confirm info. Then it connected me with a real person. I asked him if I could call wachovia directly and be forwarded to him, cause I didn't trust the number. Sure enough, I called 800-wachovia and asked for the fraud department and he answered my call. It is legit, but when in doubt, hang up and call directly.

2011-01-29 18:05:46 UTCDrew

I got a call from this number yesterday evening and then another one this morning. Both played the same message saying they had information about my account and I should call back. It sounded like a scam, but the recording stated my name and the last four digits of my check card number - so now I'm pretty concerned. I checked my Wachovia info online and saw no suspicious activity, though. The call came in a few minutes after I tried to fill up at a Shell gas station in NY, but both pumps I tried were broken (so maybe two large cash holds were placed on the account?)

I don't know if it's a scam or not, but I'd never call some random number that's not 1-800-WACHOVIA if I had a question about my account. The guy I spoke to on Wachovia's official phone number from the back of my card said it was a real Wachovia number associated with fraud protection but I'm still concerned based on how many people have said it's a fraud. I really don't know what to do here.

2011-01-17 14:08:25 UTCBE VERY CAREFUL

Do NOT call this number back! Instead call 1-800-Wachovia

2011-01-15 15:05:34 UTCanonimus

This is a fraud number. It called in regards to an OLD account

2011-01-06 15:15:20 UTCS-C-A-M

You idiots. I work at Wachovia. This is NOT a Wachovia phone number. This is a scam!!!!!!! The number they called from was 1-800-204-3814. Luckily, I didn't give them any information. The real Wachovia phone number is 800-WACHOVIA. The con artists said there was fraudulent activity on my account. Looking at my account online, there clearly was not. Several Wachovia representatives told me that this in fact IS A SCAM and that they receive several calls each day about this. Obviously, a few of the comments below were left by actual scammers... you pieces of crap. Get a life. Stop stealing other peoples' money. Start making your own... in an honest way.

2011-01-03 20:56:17 UTCIsaac

This was a legitimate call from Wachovia. But as others below have suggested, it's safest to go through their main number (1-800-WACHOVIA).

2010-12-06 14:06:17 UTCBill

I called Wachovia and they comfirmed that this was a legitamite call. Someone did indeed post a $.01 charge to my debit card. I was told this is part of a Phishing scam, they post a penny against an account to see if the numbers are accurate then once the charge is successful they use the numbers to buy things. The fruadulent charge on my account appeared to be a charge from a "State Farm agent" I never heard of her nor do I have any business with State Farm. Wachovia removed the charge, refunded my money (a whole pennny, lol) and is investigating the charge. They also are issuing me a new debit card. My recommendation to anyone is call Wachovia and let them transfer you to the right dept. I also plan to change my password on my Banking online.

2010-12-06 00:28:15 UTCMike

Wachovia (Fraud Dept)

2010-11-29 20:08:34 UTCLiberty

This is a SCAM!!! I got a call from 8002043814 at my work number, which I never give out; the voicemail said there was potentially fraudlent activity on my account. When I called back Charles answered and asked for my account number. I questioned his title and he could not provide any of my information unless he "verified" my account number first. I called Wachovia, and they had no record of attempting to call me recently, and nothing coming up as suspicious or potentially fraudulent on my account. BEWARE!!!

2010-11-29 14:04:03 UTCRED

I received a robo call on Black Friday stating they were from Wachovia Fraud Division and asked me to call them back on this number. There was a bogus charge for about $9 from THEDIGISTAR.COM
I called the Wachovia number instead (1-800-WACHOVIA) and they said that they had not tried to contact me and the number is not theirs.

2010-11-26 23:59:36 UTCYour Name

This is a fraud number. It called in regards to an OLD account. I called the Fraud Department @ Wachovia who stated that the number is not one of theirs. They notated my account after we went through my transactions that I had called in and a phish was attempted. They also showed no activity of any sort on the old account too. SCAM!!! Be careful. Call Wachovia directly. Never trust a call from a 'bank', you call them, not the other way around.

2010-11-20 18:49:21 UTCAlex

This was a legitimate call from Wachovia's fraud protection service.

2010-11-17 17:40:50 UTCGina

I got a "robo" call recorded voicemail to call back Wachovia at this number...I didn't feel like it, instead I called 1-800-Wachovia, and the gentleman who answered the phone said that 1-800-204-3814 is NOT one of their numbers. Don't call this number back.

2010-11-16 15:46:01 UTCKim

Wachovia said this is a fraud scam trying to get account info from you. They gave me an account number that I don't have and then asked me to verify my actual info. Don't do it!

2010-11-16 00:24:21 UTCKevin

This is FRAUD. Wachovia acknowledged that this phone number is not associated with them.

2010-11-10 18:25:30 UTCJackie

Received a call from this number today saying someone had tried to apply charges at an airline in Italy. Sounded really suspicious too me so I hung up before giving any information and called Wachovia at 1-800-WACHOVIA to verify the call. The first agent I spoke with assured me this was a fradulent calls and said that the bank does not make calls of this type but then put me in touch with a claims agent who explained that this may have been a legitimate call as there were 2 teams within Wachovia who wrk fraud. This agent then transferred me to the Wachovia Fraud protection department and after speaking with that agent I was informed that the initial call was indeed legitimate and that there had been an attempt to make an unauthorized charge against my ATM card. My debit card has now been blocked and a new card is being issued to me. It's made made even more suspicious of these type calls expecially when the bank personnel don't know their own processes and procedures.

2010-11-08 21:53:43 UTCJH

I contacted Wachovia at 1-800-WACHOVIA and confirmed that no one from Wachovia had contacted me. This is a phishing scam. The scam artists are posing as Wachovia. DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY INFO - no matter how innocent.

2010-10-28 02:06:09 UTCKim

the wachovia rep i just talked to on the phone first said that it sounded suspicious, but when he looked up the number he verified that it was indeed the "wachovia fraud prevention department." still sounds fishy, though.

2010-10-06 20:37:15 UTCSB

This is absolutely a legitimate call! I received the message from Wachovia asking me to call 800-204-3814. Called 1-800-WACHOVIA to verify this was a scam. They said everything looks fine with my account, no unusaul activity. I asking them if they wanted the 800-204-3814 number I received in the message since they were using Wachovia's name to try to scam people. They connected me to the claims/fraud department. After explaining this to them they were in fact able to determine this was a ligitimate call and that my wife's debit card had several fraudulent transactions today. If you have doubts, just call 1-800-WACHOVIA to verify and ask for the claims/fraud department. Sooooo glad I did!

2010-09-25 14:46:29 UTCAnonymous

DO NOT enter any information in when this number calls you. If Wachovia Fraud Dept really calls you, it will be a live operator and not an automated system. This is an old scam re-surfacing with a more legit-sounding recording, but it is still the same scam. Hang up and do not enter ANY information!

2010-09-07 23:23:41 UTCPhil

I had a message on my cell phone asking me to call this number. I called it back, and it was an automated Wachovia system. I simply had to confirm my zip (they give a list of numbers to choose from) and that I'd made several transactions. They already knew my details, including name and address and my recent transactions (amounts and where they were made).

Blatantly NOT a scam.

2010-09-07 01:26:29 UTCDS

Part 2: The Customer Service Rep from Wachovia(1-800-Wachovia) called me back. She said that this number is under investigation..It is not Wachovia and for me not to give them any information. She said that a real person in regards to fraud would call..not an automative call..and they would never ask you to verify information..

2010-09-05 17:00:23 UTCDS

Called us Sunday Morning...Number they called in on caller ID was unpublished 800. The recording prompted me to call 800-204-3814 if I had questions or if the person on the account was not available. We do not have an account ending in the numbers they gave. I called the real wachovia number1-800-wachovia...They could not confirm the 800-204-3814..as being their fraud dept. They are investigationg and getting back with me... Labor Day weekend on a Sunday asking for my Zip code...does not sound legitimate...I will write again when I hear more...

2010-09-02 15:16:15 UTCJason

The Wachovia person I talked to (from the contact info in my online account) is suspicious of that number and has it flagged for investigation. They don't normally ask for details like telephone numbers, etc.

2010-08-30 18:53:35 UTCChris

Confirmed with the number on the back of my card that it is a legitimate Wachovia number used for selling fraud protection services.

2010-08-21 14:20:14 UTCKL

Received automated call from Wachovia, a ROBO call. Turns out after calling our local branch the being re-directed to 1-888-647-3648 Fraud Prevention Dept at Wachovia that they informed me it IS a legitimate phone number and that we should return the call to the 800-204-3814 number as they verify transasctions which have been questioned. I was informed that this is an automated system and you are asked for verification of last 4 of card number, your zip code then the system goes thru each transaction giving you the option to press 1 to accept the transaction or another number to decline and report the transaction as fraud. We have not called yet will today. Feel more confident posting this since I also work in the the Bankcard Processing industry for the past 17 years own our own office and know they are telling us the truth now. Still have doubts call Wachoiva 1-888-647-3648 Fraud Prevention dept to verify the 800 phone number. Thanks for this site!

2010-07-24 23:58:51 UTCJP

Just called Wachovia. NOT LEGITIMATE!!!! Check your account purchases as there were several unauthorized purchases on mine.

2010-07-19 18:10:33 UTCLaurie

THIS IS WACHOVIA fraud department. Received the same phone message re: name/zip. Alarms went off as to possble scam, hung up called Wachovia (800-Wachovia) Confirmed someone tried to use my card number and make a purchases in NY.

FYI - one of the direct numbers for Wachovia Fraud 800-359-8977. The other is an automated response system.

2010-07-18 23:15:15 UTCNeal

Legitimate Wachovia fraud protection call. Someone had committed fraud on my card, and I was able to settle it by calling back the # (this one) left on the message. LEGIT!

2010-07-15 17:30:33 UTCPatricia

I received a call from this number today on my cell phone. I called back and it stated it was from the Fraud Dept. at Wachovia regarding transactions on the last four digits of my debit/check card, which I did. Then it asked me to verify the correct zip code for that card, which I did not do. I hung up and immediately called Wachovia and spoke with the Fraud Department and IT WAS A LEGITIMATE CALL. Being that I never use that card and I made 3 transactions in one day and one being large it sent up a flag and the call was placed to me. IT IS A LEGITIMATE CALL/NUMBER!!

2010-06-28 17:52:00 UTCWesty

This is a legitimate Wachovia #. The account number they reference is the last 4 digits of your debit/credit card. It's for fraud prevention.

2010-06-25 16:50:37 UTCGreg

I got this call, but I was suspicious so I hung up and called Wachovia myself. What Wachovia told me was consistent with what this number told me, which leads me to believe this is legit. However, I suppose it's possible they are scammers and that they were the ones who made the unauthorized transaction, only to call me up about it afterwards looking for my info.

2010-06-25 14:22:14 UTCPOGOSMILE

I called the bank as soon as I recieved the call from 1 800 204 3814 And they said it was NOT A LEGITIMATE Number for THEIR monitoring services...get a new card issued to you as soon as possible, once they link your last four digits to your zip code the rest of YOUR information is a PIECE OF CAKE for a HACKER AND THEIF!

2010-06-25 14:18:53 UTCPOGOSMILE

The recording from this number states that it is from Wachovia. I called Wachovia directly, and discovered that this number is fraudulent! Do not give them any information!

2010-06-19 20:07:44 UTCChris

THIS IS A WACHOVIA NUMBER!!!!!!!!!!

2010-06-19 15:15:43 UTCER

This was a valid call from Wachovia - I didn't trust the call and called Wachovia (@ 1 800 Wachovia)- they confirmed that this was a call from the Check Card/Debit Card Fraud Protection dept. The night before, we had used a check card that had been issued months before, activated, but never actually used for anything. This was what generated the call from the fraud dept. and again - I didn't call back the number they left OR the number they called from - I called the 800 on the back of my check card so I knew for sure I was dealing with Wachovia. It was nice to see that they actually are paying attention, even if at first I was skeptical because of the way the call came in. If you receive a call from this number, call back the main number for Wachovia and explain what happened and they will connect you to the fraud dept to look into why you got the call. They confirm your last 72 hours of use - if the account number they give you on the message seems off, check the account number on your check card- it isn't the same # as your checking account, nor will cards issued to different people on your account that access the same checking account have the same number on the check cards. Hope this helps to clear up the mysterious calls. I don't agree with the whole robot calling, but it really was legitimate.

2010-06-09 20:40:53 UTCJay

I got a robo call today asking to return the call at 800 204 3814. Curious, I googled the number and found lots of people claiming it to be a fraud. So I called Wachovia, who said it actually *was* them, calling about a bogus charge of $57 to a company some time around noon. They said the 800 # in question was their fraud contractor's number.

Call Wachovia and ask if there was any reason they should call you today if you get that call. Only takes 3 minutes.

2010-06-09 16:43:56 UTCNot Given

I received a call from this number claiming to be the Wachovia fraud department. It was an automated machine which asked me to verify that my name was XXXX. I hit 1 to say yes and it hung up. I called Wachovia on their 800 number and talked to a representative who said there was no activity on my account and no one from the fraud department had called me. I'm keeping a close eye on my accounts now...

2010-06-03 22:07:54 UTCRJ

This is a valid Wachovia Fraud phone number. I thought that it sounded weird and called Wachovia with the number on my card. I was instructed that is the debit card research department.
I am the biggest skeptic and found it to be legit. Always go through the 1-800- Wachovia number and then they will transfer you to the research department.

2010-06-02 19:36:13 UTCScully

I checked Wachovia at their Official Fraud division site...wachovia.com

i called them, their phone # is (888) 647-3648.

The guy I spoke with took the number from me and called it. He confirmed that this IS Wachovia, so I don't know what those other people are talking about.

Call them for yourself.

Yea, this is def. a scam... they said my account # ended in 5068... i dont have an account ending in that # either.

this is a legit number for wachovia. they are calling to check to see if there were fraudulent charges. they were able to let me know that someone was trying to charge on my card and they caught that someone was trying to charge on my card illegally. if you get a call from this number you should return the call. when you do they will not ask you for your account number so you do not need to worry about that.

WARNING! 15 minutes ago-I got an automated call from someone claiming to be "Wachovia Fraud Protection Services". I thought this is odd, because I've never given Wachovia this number. I began punching 0 to try to get an operator & got a message saying that to speak with someone call 1-800-204-3814. I hung up & called... Wachovia. THANK GOD I didn't give out info because it's a scam & now Wachovia is investigating.

2010-03-30 15:30:51 UTCJen

This is not Wachovia. I called the number back and listened to the bogus automated message. I immediately hung up and called Wachovia and they confirmed that there was nothing wrong with my account and that the call I received is 100% FRAUDULANT!

2010-03-09 00:35:10 UTCTom

I received a similar call today and did the same thing I called Wachovia. Your braver than I with calling them back. Is there someplace else to report this?? my e-mail is: sprnkhead@netzero.net if you know. THANKS for sharing!!!

2010-02-02 19:01:03 UTCGS

This appears to be a scam. I received an automated message asking me to call this 800-204-3814 number concerning my account ending in 0048. I don't have an account ending in that number. I called Wachovia using the number on the back of my bank card to verifiy. There was nothing wrong with my account. I was transferred to Wachovia's fraud center and I gave them the information to check on.
Afterwards I called the 800-204-3814 number. The automated system asks you to enter the number that they called you on. I entered a bogus number, and it returned me to the same question. I entered my real number that they called me on and it asked me to confirm that my name was .... (they had my name) by pressing 1. It then said that for security purposes, I needed to confirm my zip code. It gave me three zip code options, I selected a bogus zip code. The system thanked me and directed me to call the same number again if I had any questions and then ended.
****Clearly, this is a very official sounding scam to get people to verify information. This is NOT WACHOVIA****

How do I stop them from calling?

  1. Ask the unwanted caller to stop calling and put you on their do not call list (they are legally required to comply).
  2. If your number is registered with the National Do Not Call Registry you can file a complaint with the FTC.
  3. Block them with a call blocker:
