this is a nasty bill collector trying to collect on accounts that have timed out. do not answer their calls, they are threatening and harassing. There is nothing they can do to you unless you make any arrangement then you start the clock over.

It's Portfolio Recovery calling...a very nasty collection agency. They called me today...about a bill from 1998! Evil, vile and scumbag creatures. Simply tell them that the phone you are on is a company phone and that no personal calls are allowed. They'll tell you that the call is being recorded, so, turn the tables on them: tell them that YOU are recording the call, have proof that you have told them not to call your company phone and not to call again. By the way, be very careful in what you say: if you admit that the bill is yours or make any statement concerning the bill, the clock could reset and you could be liable for the long, LONG ago bill. Remember...these are vile, contemptible and nasty vermin. Treat them as something you'd scrape off the bottom of your shoe after a stroll through a dog-park.

Have nothing in collections but keep getting calls from these folks at dinner time! I won't answer anymore!

These clowns only called once today. Usually they call 4 or 5 times every day. I will never answer their calls. CID today was blank for the name and number.

I constantly get calls from this number and have for 2 years since I have obtained my current phone number. (Portfolio Recovery)I have advised them each time they have the wrong number-makes no difference. They advise the debt is from 1998. Apparently, I was lucky enough to get this person's old number. So, the last time they called, I advised them I would pay the debt when hell froze over and to get back with me then. I have no idea who the person is they are attempting to contact and most of the reps who called have stated along the line of: lying about your identity will not make your debt go away. Can we expect a payment today? Ugh!!

Trying to collect what has already been paid misrepresents the amount and/or character of the debt in dispute. This gives you a FDCPA cause of action which you should be happy to exercise if PRA ignores your Cert-Mailed ''shut up''. If you're sued long past your Statute of Limitations you can spank 'em even harder. You have leverage! Use it when the time is ripe.

The problem is that they are not a legit debt collector. They are trying to collect a debt that I paid in 1998. I have told them this. There is no debt to collect. It is past the time period in which it could be collected if it were a legitimate debt. They are trying to defraud me by pretending that the debt is valid and I have repeatedly informed them that I have already looked up their company and am aware that their collection efforts are fraudulent in cases other than mine.

They don't honor the DNC list because they are liars.

Del, ''PRA does not respect the Do Not Call list'' because it does not need to. The federal Do-Not-Call registry exists to help enforce the Telemarketing Sales Rule. Over the past two years in this thread I have discussed the laws which *do* apply several times. I'm not repeating myself just for you. The FCC, by the way, has almost no jurisdiction in this matter. The FTC has been managing collector regulation from the start, and the CFPB staff may get around to helping once they finish unpacking their moving crates.

Bottom feeders! Shirley called on my cell phone (this number is given to NO one but family!) about a family member who has NO outstanding debts less than 8 years old. They long ago came off the credit report & are outside the statute of limitations.

But these scumbags specialize in trying to convince people to pay them on debts that are VERY old. DON'T GIVE THEM A PENNY! The debt will go back on your records if a payment is made & it starts to ruin your credit all over again....

Saturday, 9:22 AM, no message left by this caller 757-961-3544. Call received on my fairly inactive wireless pay-per-minute telephone.

This debt is from 1996 and they are still calling on 200 that got to 1000 with interest charges. I had just lost my job and moved away and now they are calling cell phone because its on my bank account and they can see it on credit bureau files. Tell your bank not to share your personal information / OPT OUT. And don't put your cell number on bank account or credit cards or school files.

Calls me everyday, but I never answer the phone. I just moved here from the U.K, and I am already being harrased by these calls.

Troubled: You may have a cause of action under FCRA. PRA needs a ''permissable purpose'' to pull credit reports. The can't just go fishing without a collection account in their possession. Obtain hard prints of the major bureau reports; those are the only ones a judge can't dismiss. The bureaus don't make it easy for consumers to correct or delete faulty trade lines, but it can be done with patience.

If a collector thinks you owe something, a dunning letter must be sent within five days of first contact. Failing that violates FDCPA.

Any day now the 'PRA Hater' will find this thread and hijack it with his ongoing copy-pasted crusade against a single agency. Also known as 'Scam Alert', 'Junk Debt SOL', 'Scam Fraud', 'Junk Dept', and other handles, let's save him some trouble. Without actually reading this thread, he'll dump one or more of the following:

- A stupidly redundant copy of the blocking device tag found on the bottom of EVERY page on WCU
- A self-contradictory and misspelled rant against PRA by 'Jonathan' made on this site in December 2009 (first appearance 8888548938, which also has an early entry from 'PRA Hater')
- The front end of a blog post from 5.5 years ago (credit.typepad.com)

No attribution is ever given to the authors, and the overall agenda is unclear. Defining the broader debt industry problem is a good long discussion to have, but beyond the scope of this forum. Blocking or ignoring calls and defeating bad collectors are incompatible strategies, as anyone with experience in debtor defense would agree.

Along with the frequent name changes, at times the poster has dropped his load on the wrong threads, unwittingly emulating the runaway skip tracing behavior of the collectors. As with any offered advice, always consider the source.

Side note .... PRA is the agency made infamous for passing along the "robo-perjury" of thousands of affidavits "signed" by a dead woman. See the Wall Street Joural article "Dead Soul Is a Debt Collector" for more.

Changing your own number is a VERY last option, KV. There is plenty you can do before that. As you and most others have found, verbal demands never work on these rogue debt collectors. Send a cease-comm via USPS Certified with card. The FTC and many consumer watchdogs explain how to draft one. This makes your demand actionable in litigation, therefore very hard to ignore.

"Rude and combative" handily describes the typical rep for these firms. Depending on how severe the hostility, you might have grounds to threaten suit and win a settlement. Read about the FDCPA as I've plugged before and see if you have such options. Document all calls meantime.

The FTC is more than happy to seek million-dollar judgments against rogue collectors, but that only happens when enough victims complain, and NOT via the DNC registry, which, for the umpteenth time I repeat, does not apply to debt collectors. You won't get personal relief from PRA and NCO by wishing, CT. You have to do the homework and confront the agencies yourself, which should not be too hard if you cannot effectively be dunned. Learn how to exercise your rights as an alleged debtor at FTC-dot gov.

I do not owe them anything, and their pre-recorded messages they leave certainly are not going to get me to call them back!

Absolutely. Like many other industries, collectors are farming out to call centers in India and anywhere else the labor is cheap. Can't speak for PRA myself, but it's quite possible. You could also have someone stateside with faulty English. Collectors are also known to hire jailbirds.

The caller ask for my wife's grandfather who doesn't live here. His name is Richard, which is easy to pronounce, but she pronounced it "REE-SHAR". Like in French. Are collection calls moving overseas too? If this person is really in Virginia, they need to learn English.

Stay away from these people; they are looking for easy prey.

Warsun: I think the answer is that collectors are not going to look at court records but credit reports to see if they can make a jackpot. You might want to pull your own credit report, free via the FTC, to see if you have any derogatory trade lines attracting the wolves. Maybe your bank sold the debt account? In a perfect world your court case would be the last word, but sadly damaged credit needs continual vigilance.

Portfolio Recovery has a poor record of FDCPA compliance and has been quite busy lately to judge from all the recent complaints. Could be they are becoming desperate as the Great Recession erodes their profit sources, mainly destitute borrowers. If they're insane enough to dun you for a discharged debt, they can do it on paper like the law says. You may challenge politely, sending a copy of the judgement in your favor with your cease-comm. Else maybe can sue them instead. Not sure how the FDCPA would apply since yours is not a bankruptcy discharge, but I doubt the FTC would think PRA's behavior is justified, so it's possible you have some means of defense.

Has continously called my number.I haven't turned on my call blocker yet but i think i know whats going on. They want a collection over a 3000 dept that was run up by my bank and not me. I won the court case on it but they still call me. I was told by the judge if they call me again or try to solisitate to me show them this paper with my court case indicating THEY LOST and i WON.

Call your local phone company to see if they have a service called "Call Intercept".. there is a monthly charge to have this service. With "Call Intercept", you can block any number in the United States. I have "Call Intercept" on my home phone thru Verizon and I am able to block 25 numbers. The person calling your number will get a recording saying "THE PERSON YOU ARE CALLING DOES NOT ACCEPT CALLS FROM THIS NUMBER, GOOD BYE." It's GREAT blocking Portfolio Recovery Associates from calling all day from different numbers. I am hoping that Verizon will extend call count from 25 to 50 numbers.

Called our company during business hours looking for one of our employees. It sounded like a collection agency call. I hung up on them.

The caller wanted me to verify my social security number so that she could make sure I was the person she wanted to talk to. I would not give her my number nor did I have any bills that are due for collection. She insisted that I was beligerant and would call back later when I had calmed down. The nerve, she called me and has been calling and leaving messages on my answering machine. It is a recording and they say if I do not hang up I am accepting the call as the person that want to talk to. What kind of scam is this? Do they think I am uninformed about their mess. I will report them to the Better Business Bureau.

Sick to death of these calls! My answering machine is very clear as to who the number belongs to yet they keep bothering us...as often as three times a day-even late at night. My husband and I are Seniors and do not have outstanding debts. Something should be done to these people to get this to stop!

Calling my home to try and find my ex husband because he went default on some debts. They keep calling me (guess the jerk gave them my number instead of his own) about it I'll be reporting them to the authorities. So for a $1,000 dollar debt, they get $100. Take it or leave it, then sue me. Not sure who it is because, just call at all different hours, different days, and they leave no message. If it is the Portfolio people, I have had dealings with them before. The doctor's office made a mistake (transposed some numbers) and billed me for someone else's surgery, the same surgery I had three months before. I called and they found their mistake, they said they will fix it, but a few months later I start getting collection calls for the same thing, apparently, they did not correct all of it. I told them, I had the same body part removed months before, how could I get it out again, they couldn't answear that question, but they did ask me when I could pay the bill even though I told them it was not my bill. I told them to even send me a copy of the paper work and stuff, they never did or have.

These people have called my 9 year old sons cell phone for months now, when we call and tell them its the wrong number they get upset and very rude to him and myself. They told us they were a debt collector, and when we told them that were arnt the person they were looking for, they argured with us and tried to convice us that we were them. They had my 9 yera old in tears, and they lady kept on him. I just spoke with a Mr. Person (i am sure thats not his name) and he said they couldnt find the phone number in the system so there was no way that they had called him. When i told them that i had cell phone records, tape recordings and documentaion from AT &T that they had called, he changed his story and said he would take the number off the call list. I am seriously considering filling a report with the authorities on this one. I have also sent them a cease and desist letter to the corporate office (fax number 757-321-2504).

This person called and when I was not the one she wanted, she demanded to know who I was. I asked her what business it was of hers. She replied that she needed to know that a stranger was not answering the phone. I asked her if she was implying that I had broken into someone's house and then was answering their phone. The nerve!!! She immediatly hung up. This is ridicuous that we are being labeled as criminals just because we won't tell them our names.

They called me several times now. You will notice my bizarre name of Smith. Very unique. From their information, the person they are looking for is more than 13 years older and with a different social security number. I am very angry that they continue to call. I am very angry with how they likely got my phone number. What did they do, look up Thomas Smith in the phone book and start calling? Nothing has come in the mail, so I know they do not have my address (and will never give it to them). What a disgusting group, to call the wrong person (likely selected by a simple phone number look-up) and accuse them of not paying their bills in an extremely rude way. I must admit that I gave them a very hard time with the last call but am deeply insulted by their tactics and fee the better for it!

Trying to collect on old debt. If these scumbags have an account it is past the sol for collection.Do not answer the phone.Do not pay them a dime,if you pay them anything it will make the debt current again.

these people are the most persistant pond scum on the planet. They literally have over a hundred phone numbers they use to harrass you. Simply don't answer the phone if you don't recognize the number. They have been calling me for years! Every other day and often several times a day. There's no gertting rid of them so don't answer or get all their numbers blocked on your phone. i currently have over a dozen blocked on both my cell and home phone. Would love to see them all sail out to sea in a leaky boat.

call twice a day - never answer - i turn off answering machine when they call

I HAVE FILED COMPLAINTS TO BOTH THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU AND THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION. THESE IDIOTS ARE OUT OF CONTROL.

I just started getting calls from this company yesterday. I added their number to my blocked numbers (check w/your phone service to see if you can block numbers. I have comcast for my home phone service you can just dial *60 and wait for the prompts to add numbers on your block call list, once you add a number they can no longer get through to you).

I pick it up and then lay the phone down and come back 5 min. later, and now I don't get called near as much.

I wish a law maker or someone would take care of this company- they are ripping people off. I would throw them in jail.

They are Portfolio Recovery Affiliates. They are trying to collect on old debts that are past the statute of limitations. These are debts that you are NOT legally bound to pay. If you send them a payment, they will re-age your debt and it will no longer be past the statute of limitations. Do NOT answer their calls and if they send a letter to your home, send them one back disputing the debt due to the age of the debt. They will have to stop calling you then.

They call our house all the time, but never leave a message, and it only comes up on our caller i.d. as "Virginia Call". Annoying, and I have no idea who they are or what they want.

Just wanted to say...THANK YOU to all who posted info. re: this #. They keep calling my number. I never answer because I don't recognize the number and never leave a message but keep calling. So again, thank you for all of the posts to keep people informed.

Answered the phone. Showed number, blocked name, when I asked she sai she was calling about my First Omni acct. Told her I did not have an acct. with any company by that name and hung up.
