Computer scam and credit card fraud. International criminals attempt to gain control of your computer with fake warranty service call for Microsoft. Claims you are transmitting viruses. Gives a series of command line instructions for you to type. Produces evidence which may appear to inexperienced users to be virus activity. Tricks user into allowing admin access. Locks user out of computer, then demands a high dollar amount credit card payment to unlock computer. Retains control of computer and locks user out for ransom repeatedly. Random amounts of unauthorized charges will appear on credit card. All personal information on computer is stolen and data files become corrupted. There is no recourse if you fall for this scam.

Before answering, I screened the id and the name read Jara Jorge #7182050445, upon answering, I heard an echo and/or reverb in the background, once the caller began his dialog stating his name was James, an IT employed with Windows. He went on to say they had detected numerous of malware and viruses within my computer, which at the time my computer wasn't powered on. I then asked for his name once again, he said,

Him: James.
I: James, what?
Him: James John.
I: So you have two first names?
Him: yes sir, can you turn on your computer so that we can fix the problem.
I: Where are your head quartered James?
Him: California
I: What city?

(CLICK) he hung up!

Has called many times. I've only answered once. He has a very strong accent, said he was from windows security, and that I have "a very long time ago, reported an error, and someone is using my information and maybe pictures." He told me to log on to my computer and he would help me fix it. I asked him if he had a number I could call him back at and he said no. I said I was uncomfortable with this and hung up. He still continues to call.

How do I stop them from calling?

  1. Ask the unwanted caller to stop calling and put you on their do not call list (they are legally required to comply).
  2. If your number is registered with the National Do Not Call Registry you can file a complaint with the FTC.
  3. Block them with a call blocker or something like Nomorobo.
