How do I stop them from calling?
- Ask the unwanted caller to stop calling and put you on their do not call list (they are legally required to comply).
- If your number is registered with the National Do Not Call Registry you can file a complaint with the
FTC. - Block them with a call blocker:
Uniden DECT1288 blocks up to 20 numbers, plus Private and Unknown, with the reject tone, without ringing the phone.
Panasonic KX-TG106 blocks up to 30 numbers, plus all unidentified callers, with a busy tone, after the phone rings once.
JF Teck Caller ID with Ring Controller blocks up to 70 numbers, and can be set to always allow up to 100 to ring through.

Caller ID said "New Zealand 64622498846". I've Googled the number with the first and/or last number dropped, and it's come up collectors both ways. This one tried to get personal information on an employee, which I said was not legal to give out. They also tried to get me to take a message, which I refused, as company policy does not entertain collectors in any way. The caller sounded like they were from India.
All info posted for this number indicates they are not legitimate collectors.
They try to extort money out of people with all manner of threats and they often misrepresent themselves as law enforcement to try to get information. They threaten legal actions, imminent arrests, and also threaten friends and relatives. THIS IS ILLEGAL. They often prey on people who used payday loan services, and the lists come from payday lenders, usually ones that are no longer in business.
IMPORTANT POINT: They often do not have an actual collection account, just a name and number. Even if you send them money, no actual debt will be settled.
Do not give out information to anyone who calls about a debt. Always insist on handling everything through the mail. NEVER, EVER, EVER, give them your bank account number or related info. There is no way to distinguish scam artists from genuine collectors so don't be a victim.
Collections caller... really threatening... even called my bf. NO information as to WHY except he's some sort of collections "rep"???
