"WTF", while your attitude is admirable, your first response should not be "How do I pay?" but "Prove I owe!" Make sure GRC duns you on paper, as required of them within five days of first contact, before you cut any deals.
When skip tracing, debt collectors must answer to privacy regs within the FDCPA, hence the obfuscation reported by "Mysterious Girl" and others. Of course, being shadowy works in their favor to make call targets anxious. Calls not meant for are best silenced with a cease-comm via USPS Certified with card. The FTC and many consumer watchdogs explain how to draft one.
I also don't buy NW's quality control story from March 2009, given that GRC has all along been perfectly willing to display a full number in the 513 area code. (5136057537) If you peruse the underlying WCU comments, there are some pretty damning ones about hostile and nonsensical skip tracing. By the way, CID spoofing just turned illegal almost six weeks ago with the signing of the 2009 Truth in Caller ID Act.
Back in July, "Me" was correct in that the FDCPA bans calls which incur a charge. It does not apply to "any bill collector", only third parties to the account. Otherwise only a similar state law would help. Speaking of which ...
If you are receiving repeated, misdirected, and/or abusive calls from a third party debt collector, you may find relief in the provisions of the FDCPA, the Federal law which regulates collector behavior and provides you simple tools for your own defense. It grants you control of how you are contacted, and the means to sue at low cost. Learn your rights and first response tactics at FTC-dot-gov.
Every morning 513 calls me. I never answer because I am at work. They leave a voicemail and its a recording that is cut off. All I hear is the end of a reference number. With no way of calling back. Once I did actually answer and it said "all representatives are busy. Please continue holding." Then about every 30 seconds I have to keep pushing 1 if I want to keep holding. I do have a student loan and a credit card that I have not been paying, but I get other calls for that with actual people and phone numbers I can call back. I dont know who this is and I cant settle it because theres no one to talk to or a number to call. Dont these people understand that they are making it impossible for me to contact them back?
i have no clue who these people are even the number itself. They constantly calling my cell and work number non-stop and like everyone says never tends to leave a message. If it is urgent why dont they leave a message. dont know what to do i dont have a loan with sallie mae if this is the perks who keeps calling like hello im way over the age of going school. can anyone tell me how to stop this?
if any bill collector calls your cell phone all you have to do is tell them this is a cell phone and do not call it anymore....the law says a bill collector has to cease calls on a cell due to they cannot call a number that will allow you to incur any charges...so if its a cell phone u many incur charges....so therefore they cannot call it anymore....its the federal law....
I get these all the time on my phone at work but it's a fax machine trying to connect, my caller ID only says 513. it's very annoying. I am unable to figure out what the real number is, even if i let it go to voice mail, it only tags the number as 513.
ps. NW sounds like a real ass.
calls 3 to 4 times a week - another of many, collection agency hiding their number under "Out of Area", "Private Caller", and please dont insult us by using " is not to "mask their identity" it is because all calls are routed through the corporate office for monitoring and compliance purposes", its all about trying to make a dollar for someone who cant find a job anywhere else.
The reason that calls show up as 513 is not to "mask their identity" it is because all calls are routed through the corporate office for monitoring and compliance purposes. They are not "harassing you randomly." Do you people not realize that the Do Not Call Registry does not apply to collection agencies? If you didn't call in, sounding like a jerk, getting all defensive, then they'd know you weren't lying and kindly remove your number. No one wants to waste their time calling a wrong number. Where is the money in that? Please tell me. Debt collecting is about making money. Don't forget that. Calling a wrong number gets you nowhere.
Also, they won't just threaten to garnish your wages -- they WILL garnish your wages. So, lesson is, don't default on a federal student loan.
Keeps calling and calling and not leaving messages on my phone. Who the heck just harasses you randomly? They called previously and never left messages before, too. It's like a three month cycle of let's call and bug u then lay off for awhile.
2 days now I have received calls that show up on my cell phone caller id as only 513. What is 513? Trying to understand this spoofing thing.
I keep getting calls which appear only as "513" on my cell phone. It seem that the party behind this, General Revenue Corporation, a collection agency, is forging the caller ID information to mask the origin of their calls. They ask for someone I don't know, so they have the wrong number, but refuse to stop calling, even though my cell number is on the national 'do not call' registry. They either hang up or refused to give call back info, until the last two calls when i played along and got they to reveal that 1-800-464-4944 is their in call line. They said it was about a federal matter. When I asked if this was from the government, Joan told me and I quote "You could say that."
I am going to pursue this matter as far up the line as I can. It appears that this private company does try to collect for Sally Mae and other things like student loans, but they are using abusive and deceptive tactics. I note that a narrow class action lawsuit is being filed. But that is not enough for these creeps.

i've gotten numerous calls from just "513" on my cell phone caller ID too. Cell phone co wasn't so helpful, just recommended I add my cell phone number to the national do not call list. there oughta be a law about faking the caller ID to be so deceptive and hiding their real identity and purpose.
These people are annoying. If you ever have school loans, try not to default on them cause these people will hunt you down and threaten to garnish your wages. When you receive a call from a number that says 513, just end the call. Another thing, tell them you do not give them permission to use my phone number anymore and if I receive another call from this number and/or company, I will report you to the BBB and consult an attorney.
I girl called asking for kayla twice in 2 days. when I told her that kayla doesnt live here she insisted that my number was the number kayla gave her. Then asked me why I was being so rude. all that shows up on my caller id is 513.
many calls daily. annoying. how does just 513 show up?
It could be a number of companies. Our number shows up as 513 (nationstar mortgage)
It turned out to be a guy from a collections agency (General Revenue Corporation) looking for my old roomate. When I finally talked to him, he was actually kind of threatening. I hope he calls back.
I've gotten this number twice. Guy leaves a message saying he's trying to reach someone who lives in the same apartment complex as me. Says his name is Chris at 1-800-436-5290 x488.
What the heck, just 513 shows up my my cell phone. They call me daily on my cell at work. I don't know who it is, but it is beyond annoying
