I used to work for Xentel and would recommend that no one and i mean no one donate any money to that company. Only 8% of the money actually gets to the charity and xentel gets the rest. They used to pay me 16.00 per hour combined with hourly pay of 6.55 an hour then a 2.50 attendance bonus ( which means i would not get paid my bonus if i was stuck dying in the hospital somewhere). Then i would receive a percentage of my returned money (a collection bonus). They do what ever they can to screw the community, their employees, and all who are involved. At the end of my employment they decided to pull all of our bonuses which was my incentive to stay. But the management sure didn't see a paycut there salaries stayed right in tact. As Art said all you guys get a real job there is a lot better out there. I wish you all luck and as a community lets pull together and get this company out of here. We dont need people like Charlie Jenkins or Ken Kraus, Chris Burbacher, Phil Senso running a company that is screwing everyone in a community. Help them find a job where they can pull it together and treat people as if they are humans and hopefully not in a management job (the last thing these three need is a little more of a power trip

I don't like how they hangup when your answering machine answers, and when you do answer your phone it's a recording. I tried calling back the number on my caller ID, and got a recorded spiel about how you must be wondering about their # showing up on your caller ID, and that they are exempt from the DNC registry, so obviously they must get a lot of call back complaints, otherwise you think they have a live person answering the calls hoping for donations. If they were legit, how come you can't leave them a message? After their spiel about CAL PAL, and that they plan on calling you back (even though you don't want them to), the message conveniently says that their mailbox is full. I also agree with Carol's reply to Stephanie, as Stephanie is way off base.

2008-09-11 00:09:38 UTCCarol

Hey AKA "Stephanie Lugo", Where do you get off advising people if they don't want unsolicited telemarketing calls to get a cell phone?! This post is for complaining about unsolicited telemarketing calls, not for giving accolades to unwanted telespammers. Legitimate Charities don't call for donations. If you read the posts as you claimed, you'd see that we "complainers" do get calls from calpal on our cell phones too. . How do expect us not to be rude when you stated "it's truly not your fault", when you make numerous rude, unsolicited , and intrusive callbacks, when clearly no one asked for a callback?! So whose fault is it then? As for your other ludicrous "advice" about donating $10.00 to stop calpal from calling for awhile, that almost sounds like extortion. Why should anyone have to pay to stop scammers from pestering them with their calls?!!! You must not read very good because many of the unfortunately scammed ones who did donate $, were then endlessly bombarded with calpal calls for more money! "Grown sophisticated people" as you are, would seem to have a better job than to have to stoop to being in the vacuous useless job of telemarketing, and have more than $30.00 to you name. So, how do you plan on paying your cellphone, or telephone bill this month? Bottom line, not very funny, stop telespamming, and my advice to you is find a job that pays more, so you can donate more than just $10.00, as a "grown sophisticated" person would do.

2008-08-18 02:02:40 UTCJasmine

Picked this up on another site ... but I agree ...
California PAL is one of the worst charities we have here in the SF Bay Area. There are news articles going back at least 10 years reporting how very little money people give actually goes to do charitable work. In all that time they have done nothing to correct the situation. Now they are using aggressive auto-dialers and predictive dialing. That's why we get all those annoying "hang-up" calls. I hate to blast them because I'm sure that the volunteer officers mentoring kids really do want to help. But you just can NOT give them money until (at long last) they clean up their fund raising act.

I (Jasmine) think the reason people are so upset is because of all the multiple "empty" calls, where they just hang up as soon as you answer.

2008-08-17 06:07:24 UTCStephanie Lugo

This is so funny to sit here and read this people this is a job and like most jobs they probably don't like making the call as about as much as you like to receive them I should know I worked for pal. Believe me it's not as easy as a job as it looks but as they say the cause is as worthy as it gets, and it's understandable from your point of view as well., but if this is how grown sophisticated people act, you have to complain about everything, then just get cell phones. Or at least be polite most of the time when we call back it is truly not their fault, or if you do not want to hear from them for a while donate $10 and get it over with. People are so greedy now a days, for example I only have $40 to my name and I gave someone $10 no biggie share and share alike. Bottom line grow up people and grow a heart.

2008-08-13 06:47:30 UTCCarol

I see by the posts that they have way too many pone numbers to use to do their "tele-spamming". I read the other posts for CAL PALS numerous phone numbers they use, and right off I spotted some as posers, especially Shelley. Kudos to mixbsd for exposing them. I see the Better Business Bureau gave them an F, and no way are they accepted by the BBB, also other legit charity ranking sites gave CAL PAL very low marks. I see Tim has no comeback for mixbsd for exposing you and your sock puppets. Stop asking people for their email address Tim, all you want is to sell them to spammers. Also, why in the hell does "The League" need so many different telespamming numbers!? Keep up the good work mixbsd, bravo!

NOBODY wants your unsolicitied calls. If I (or anybody else) want to donate to your charity or any other charitable organization we will find the way to do so. Requests by US mail are far better and much less intrusive. MOST ALL OF US feel that telephone solicitors are IRRITANTS and we look upon you with great disdane! I will NEVER respond positively to telephone solicitors.

2008-06-14 16:55:54 UTCSleeper Awaken

fuck PAL, some guy called and he tried hard saying that I even donated last year, July 12, but you see I was not even home at that time the year before. So required by FCC telemarketing rules, I asked for the callers number, and business address, he hesitated and even asked why, I said it was required. He then Hung up the phone, Yes anyone who calls for PAL is a fucking scammer. The 800 he gave me was fake, and a lot of local PAL groups say right on their Police Department web sites that they don't call out for donations, or come to you door.

The sad thing about this is the CalPal volunteer officers and all the police in the community now bear a stain of shame thanks to Petrillo and his Tele-spamming buddies. Do NOT give, this is a scam, the tele-spammers get almost all of the money

2008-06-06 02:20:36 UTCMr. Annoyed

Wow. I thought these Blogs were moderated...they need to delete this SPAM junk. Anyways, they never answer me when I answer the phone as a local police department. Needless to say, after talking with our local police department about these people, they said the word "POLICE" should never be in their business name as it's misleading. they suggested not to give any money to them because there's no affiliation.

2008-05-03 16:06:24 UTCF. P. Stark

Wow, BSD I guess the truth really does hurt. The truth is never give a dime to CalPal or any other of these Xentel human trash orgs. The people from these charities had better find an honorable way to solicit funds. Their behavior on this board is all the evidence one needs!

Not trying to upset anyone here. Just want to help our kids! We don’t get a lot of help so we have to call you just to keep the programs alive… Also I work directly for Pal. So there isn’t a third party getting rich off any donations…Pal is a 501 c 3 non-profit charity and has been since 1971. The program is made up of Police officers that coach and mentor 300,000 kids year round. This means we can call anyone we like, however, we have a courtesy do not call list, in case you would rather not be called from home. I can delete any one at any time and I understand your feelings.

So please just send me you info and I’ll take care of it ASAP… tpetrillo@calpal.org or you can leave a message at 510-686-8917… Thanks Everyone…Tim Petrillo… Branch Manager PAL

More evidence that Xentel does not honour DNC requests, unless threatened with a lawsuit: dmnews.com
When Xentel called me, I made it perfectly clear I wanted my phone number added to both Xentel's as well as the client's suppression list. I didn't learn until later that it's Xentel's policy to disregard the first part of that request, even when it's clear the consumer doesn't want Xentel to call back for any client.

It was only after I wrote and threatened a lawsuit did Xentel agree to add my phone number to a company-wide suppression list.
2008-02-12 03:57:03 UTCMichelle

Ugh. These jerks keep trying to reach my husband, thinking he'll donate even though I told them neither of us are interested. They keep hanging up as soon as they figure out it's THE WIFE, or right after I tell them my husband isn't at home. Nothing seems to stop them. I've asked to have my number removed. It hasn't been. I've emailed to have it removed, nothing. These people are unprofessional and highly annoying. Think I'll write to my favorite news station to see if they can do a story on the abusive fundraising tactics these people employ. I'm tired of being disturbed by these jerks.

Looks like "shelley" (whocalled.us) is the sock for "Stop whining" (whocalled.us) or vice-versa. Both posted through 207.200.116.204 (an AOL web proxy in California) on 2007-05-25.

I would suggest that for every call that you get, call 1-800-622-5725 to complain on their dime (and tell them you're using their toll-free, so it's in their best interest to add your number to their DNC list).

Documenting more evidence against Xentel, for Google archiving purposes...

More Xentel sock-puppetry @ whocalled.us (note the IP address):
"2007-04-10 Juile 139.142.139.89
I received a call from the California Police activities league as I am an active giver. Cal Pal saved my Childs life" (ignoring the fact that 139.142.139.89 is owned by Xentel for a second, why is a Californian posting via a Canadian IP address?)

"2007-05-05 John 139.142.139.89
Actually guys, most Charities/Telemarketing splits result in the Telemarketing people keeping 85% and the charity getting 15% So if what your saying is true and 35% is going that means they did 3 times better then your average cause…" (someone can't multiply!)

Both of these sock-puppets also posted identical messages on another anti-telemarketing board for 1-559-272-6406. I suspect that "shelley" and "megan" at that board are either Tim's "socks", or other Xentel stooges (employees told to post to support "the cause").

Avoid Xentel like the plague. Give one penny to this huge telejunking operation for any of the so-called charities they represent: expect more calls from other organisations who hire them.

Next time you get a call at dinner time from a $9/hr college drop-out claiming to be raising money for your friendly neighbourhood FOP or State Trooper Lodge, politely but firmly ask them "do you work for Xentel?" and see how fast they hang up on you. No slick rebuttals or anything!

Curious to know... is that dorky voice on all those Xentel "customer care" lines yours (whocalled.us)? p.s. BTW, they like to mention the police or firefighters to get you to donate. Its a guilt trip to get you to donate...and yes, they will call every year and tell you, you donated last year, would you like to donate the same amount??

2008-01-10 23:36:10 UTCmary

is it very likely that this company is out to do some good, though telemarketing calls are annoying. My father used to work for a company in Hayward, c&c productions, that would call on behalf of the Hayward Firefighters to raise money for tickets to go back to children with disabilities. I believe they mentioned something about "WeTip" as well. They say it's not-for-profit, but who really knows... the people calling have to be paid somehow-
By the way, they rarely use their real names with the public...I wouldn't suprised if the guys name isn't Tim!

Very pushy demanding rude people on the other end. I wouldn't give you a dime if my life depended on it. And I HAVE told these people to remove me from whatever list I may be on, and they always say they will, yet I keep getting the calls. Again, RUDE.

Well, well, well... Tim's a Xentel stooge! These are the fumbducks who call on behalf of the numerous FOP lodges, state trooper assoc's, firefighters, etc. Well, Tim, none of Xentel's employees are actually police officers, are they? Or firefighters, or state troopers? You guys just like to give that impression when you call.

If there's any reason to boycott an organization *regardless of its apparent charitable status* it's those charities that treat donors (and prospective donors) with contempt, by hiring telejunkers. And not just any telejunker. To really make an impression, these "charities" recruit nefarious telespammers who get spanked by state AG's (see ago.state.co.us and ago.mo.gov for two out of many examples where Xentel does NOT stop calling people). See, Tim, if you try hiding behind "gatekeeper refusals" as license to keep pestering people, you will get smacked in court.

OOPS........ Didn't know the first post went through. My bad. LOL

2008-01-05 04:09:06 UTCHeather

I am SO SICK of these people calling me! If they're a Non-Profit, I hope they're getting a discount on their long-distance phone calls, because I don't even live in the 510 area code! They call, wait for me to answer the phone (or the answering machine to pick up) and then they hang up! They must have lord knows who doing their calling for them. They probably get paid by how many phone calls they make, even if they don't get a donation. What's really pathetic is, if they had not hung up on me the first time they called, they WOULD HAVE GOTTEN A DONATION FROM ME! Not now, though! Now they're just another petty irritation to deal with when I get home.

Besides that, if they REALLY wanted donations, why are they just hanging up on people instead of completing the phone call and actually GETTING DONATIONS?!

Tim.............. Any thoughts on that one? Maybe you need to review how the "Phone Solicitations for Donations to Charity" actually works with your callers?

Just a thought.

2008-01-05 03:57:58 UTCHeather

I am so sick of getting phone calls from these people! They NEVER say anything; as soon as I answer the phone, they hang up. Too bad for them, because if they WOULD HAVE actually continued the phone call, they might have gotten a donation from me.

@Tim: it doesn't matter what your charitable status is - you've been asked not to call. It should not take an email to get added to your DNC list. Further, why would I trust a telespammer with my email address? Are you these people too: whocalled.us and whocalled.us ?

California Pal has been helping kids for over 37 years now. calpal.org Cal Pal is a 501 (c) 3 Tax-deductible non-profit organization. As a non-profit we are 100% exempt from the national do not call list. If you would like your number removed from our calling list, out of courtesy, please E-mail your number, I would be happy to add you to our Do Not Call List ļ TPetrillo@CalPal.org Tim Petrillo, Branch Manager

This fundraiser has been calling insesantly for weeks. I once got strong armed into a $20 donation over a year ago and now they won't leave us alone even tho I told them "no thanks" more than once. There is no tax deduction for donations to this "league" which leads me to believe they are NOT a non-profit organization. I am not interested and wish they would stop calling!

How do I stop them from calling?

 1. Ask the unwanted caller to stop calling and put you on their do not call list (they are legally required to comply).
 2. If your number is registered with the National Do Not Call Registry you can file a complaint with the FTC.
 3. Block them with a call blocker (click pictures below for price and reviews).
