Ned: Almost hearing and actually getting threats make a great difference legally. Document all calls and CID carefully and record clean phone audio if possible.
Dan the cop reporting early in 2010 would never get a chance to send any NCO rep to prison, since debt disputes are a civil and not criminal matter. He did, however, have a solid FDCPA case any decent consumer attorney would take on contingency. Given that in a time of grieving his good faith approach was met with hostile and illegal collection tactics, typical for an agency lacking proof of claim, he would have had a pretty good shot at cancelling all the debt, striking the bad trade lines from his credit reports, and winning a decent payout for statutory and actual damages. Hopefully something got done before a year passed from those major violations. That's all the time you get to sue under FDCPA.
So there is hope, and you do have rights. You need to do the homework to learn and enforce them.

Caller left message that they are a debt collection agency seeking to collect a debt...did not say from whom they are seeking to collect from...Do not answer such calls...caller had that harsh debt collector attitude. You could almost hear the threats...
NCO student loan collection I thought They sold car insurance but student loan collection is their game.....
These guys keep calling and calling... Specifically this guy name "Paul Smith" a collector keeps calling and they even try to get information about me from my 10 year old son.....
They are collecting on student loans, and they will try to strong arm you into making commitments that are not realistic. I kept telling them that my hours were cut and I couldnt make the HUGE payments they were asking me to make..... SO I WENT ON THE INTERNET....
These guys just lied.... I was able to negotiate a monthly payment with them that was more affordable...
I found this guy on the internet he calls him self "The rogue Student Loan Collector" and he showed me everything I needed to do to SHUT THESE COLLECTORS UP!!!

Read their stuff Seriously.... No joke... He saved my family... Really....
Mindless little punks with nothing else to do but make money for the company, while they sit in their little cubicle tracing lines on their desk, while the worms slowly eat away at their tortured, torment little pee brains. And the maggots slow drain the green juices out of their fat, over blouted, stinking bodies. Until the next slim ball takes their place in the mindless, game of taking your money, and the corporation takes theirs. Until the next time, and the next place I will see you the glorious and powerful KING COBRA, remember me NCO Financial we will meet again. The King Cobra was here.
My wife died recently from a long fight with cancer. Recently I applied for credit and found these people had seven entries of collections on my credit report for various amounts from ten dollars to one hundred four. Had so many bills through her illness and death I was sure I musy have missed some. I contacted them via their website, told them I wanted to resolve the debt and made the mistake of giving them my contact number so I could work it out. OMG, they can't or won't tell me what the bills are for and gave me a PO Box of where to send the money. They also keep calling me back threatening to file charges and put me in jail. I've been a cop for 23 years, so I told them "I arrest people like you and send them to jail". Guess there is no hope of getting this off my credit.
Called at 10:00 on Christmas Eve! I owe nothing. I never have. They called 4-5x/day last year, but finally stopped calling several months ago. My bank (for whom they said they were collecting) told me to ignore the calls, there was no such debt, and that they sounded like scammers. Where do I report this harassment?
please be aware these scammers are using a spoof card with ficticious names and numbers they can make up any name and number they want to scam money from you pass the word and don't fall for it better yet give names like I do and renata smith in michigan is a scammer.
How do I get them to quit calling? They call 1-2 everyday for the last 5 months.
they have been colling for months they never tell us how they are looking for and the other day the called a 6:08 am. this is against the law. aj.
A very rude middle aged woman calling about a debt owed by the previous owner of my cell phone number. I told him that I just got this number, and he was calling the wrong person. He said, "Whatever, tell (name) to call us immediately." And they still keep calling!
They are collectors of money for school loans and such...don't answer the phone if you don't want to be contacted.
My, NCO has been busy. Here's a couple of nice links illustrating what the FTC thinks of them.

So far, they've tried going after three different names and even said my phone number is listed for a street I don't live on "according to [their] records." I think the next call will be a bit more fun. This time I'll drag out the conversation as long as possible still without giving up any information. The theory is that the longer I keep them occupied the less time they'll have to call other people. I might even read them the FTC story above.
Whoever called dialed a wrong number and asked for someone who doesn't live here. debt collection agency.
Keeps calling looking for someone who apparently lives around my area and who i know. i keep telling them that they have the wrong number but keep harassing and never wanting to give their name or information. they even start asking personal questions. it is very annoying to deal with it.
calling me about my sons debt. unable to find a home page for these people also. anybody know where they are located?
That bunch keeps calling my FAX machine, gets the tone, launches into some pitch.
A Women called and asked for someone named Carmen. Told her no one by that name lives here. She then said this is recorded and asked if this is an address I never heared of I said no. She said Thank You and hung up.
Received several calls from Sharreena Tatum 1-800-230-4724 stated that she calling in behalf of Dept of education on a debt. Asked for individual using SSN and address. After research this number - this belongs to NCO Fininicial. This individual is rude and extremely getto. Asking that she remove and discontinue call my home and placed of employment, she stated that she will continue, "just pay your damn debts" - I hang up. Woke me up an insisted I write the number that I clearly did not write down for my mom.
First off I am not a secretary
I'm sleeping...
and I'm only 16!
Several calls from this number have come in to my cell phone at all times of day and night. Called Saturday morning at 8:20 am and on a Tuesday night at 10pm.
I just received a voice mail from these guys. The first half was so choppy I couldn't make out a word. The second half was a request for me to call back a number - different from the one calling. A "reference no." was provided. I don't owe anyone in this world a cent (other than my mortgage, which has been deducted automatically like clockwork from my bank account for 15 years) so I've no idea what this bunch is up to. But if I've learned anything in in life, it is don't bother with 1-800 nos. that call with urgent requests. The more urgent the request, the greater the scam, and if they really have to tell you something, they can slap a 41-cent stamp on it and send it the old fashioned way.
Started calling our house. How the hell do these people get our phone numbers?
Rude, rude, rude!
I just recieved to call from NCO but a different phone # 2532486405. No message, no answer. After reading these posts I'll be ready next time.
So, this number is calling where I work and asking for someone, like they are one of our vendors...but they aren't. They are NCO and are scum bag chits that try to scam you into paying a debt that isn't yours. They also threaten and says they "know" where you live. Its a bit crazy. They do not believe it when you tell them you have no idea what they are talking about.
I hope they show up where I work cause I will delight in calling the cops to take them away.
I hope they show up where I live , as they threatend to do, because that is another reason for me to have one of them arrested. Bring it on azzholes. They threatened me over something that isn't even mine, like a stalker "I'm watching you, I know where you live", so bring it on!!! and watch their azz get jailed.
Got a call yesterday from someone asking for "Joel Mylastname". Told them they had the wrong number, and was about to hang up when they kept asking for him, where he was at, how could they get a hold of him, etc. I thought it was just a wrong number, as they didn't identify themselves or their company, and they asked me several times about about this "Joel" guy and asked to speak to my family about him, implying that we were hiding stuff from them. I kept asking who was calling and she would dodge my question, finally telling me her name was "Theresa" and she needed to talk to this Joel guy. She asked me if this was "Yourlasntname's residence?" and why this guy was using my address if we didn't know him? That made me VERY concerned and all she said in a very rude tone was "Look, this is federal business." and hung up shortly after. I didn't know who it was until I called the number back, which turned out to be NCO, and you can only talk to someone if you know their last name/ext. number.
damn I hope they call back!!! Now that I know who it is I will tell them what I really think and record their conversation.
A woman called asking for "Shane" and when I politely told her she had the wrong number (which she did)she proceeded to become VERY abusive and belligerent. She accused me of not giving her the info she was entitled to and threatened "to take action" if I did not pass her message on to "Shane". I hung up as soon as she started YELLING at me!
I'm a kid and i told them they had the wrong number (which they did) i have my own line and the man told me my adress and everything i told him that he was not being professional and that i wanted to speak to a manager he yelled at me and said i was not professonal and then kept yelling at me . i tried to call back and go the run around. Its a little scary to have these people yelling at you and tewlling you they know where you live. any advice? i want it to stop.
Scum-bag bottom feeders ought to get a decent job.. I demand a "cease and desist". and stop leaving me messages. I always pay my just debts...
"michael mann" called my number and left a message. He asked to speak with someone with a similar sounding name as mine. the number he left for me to call was different than the 2154428300 that showed up on my caller ID. I think they are just picking straws and hoping they get the person they are looking for!
scam collection agents, dont pay them! get credit report to see date, owed, etc they collect on outdated crap and it stays on your credit report anyway.keep your cash and invest in a cd!
Well, so far I've been making student loan payments with NCO. From what I've read here, I'm a little concerned now. I've gotten the calls but there's no answer. Don't know why I would receive collection calls in the first place. Been making payments on time.
Call back this number
An un-named man left a message on my voicemail saying he was from NCO and was trying to "track down" L.L.G., my sister-in-law, because she had "skipped out". He told us to call his office at 800-611-0641. I thought this was strange because if he was looking for her, why not look in the phonebook - she's listed! I called her and told her about the message. She called the 800 number and a man told her she owed money on a credit card from 1999. She told him she had never had a credit card. Her husband got on the phone and tried to ask him questions but he was not cooperative. The whole incident is very suspicious!!!
NCO FIN Group conducts non legal collections activity. Record all conversations with them and read up on the FDCPA. Notify them that you want itemized bill and verification of debt. do not give bank or credit card info to them.
Left message on machine, said "Name is Calvin", please call me and gave number twice. Guy talked unclear - sounded older and I want to know how he got our number. And why??
PLEASE CALL ME, NAME IS cALVIN
