American Institute for Cancer Research has been consistently trashed by Charity Navigator, as noted previously. Its payout from donations is pitifully low, and its benefits to the cause at large are unclear.

AICR has been a repeat client of Akron's favorite commercial fundraiser InfoCision. The calls are exempt from Federal DNC under the charity status, even though such call centers are very much for-profit and pocket most of what these periodic campaigns collect. At times the "charity" group is itself a profit enterprise, compounding the deception.

However, as commercial entities, commercial fundraisers are expected to honor an internal no-call list and add any number upon request. Break that order, the FTC declares, and "the telemarketer may be subject to a fine of up to $16,000."

File complaints with the FTC and attorneys general, and the charity group doing the hiring. When the boiler room calls, try getting on a master "no-call" list for all of that firm's charity clients. See more discussion under this number: 9018819984

A charity call campaign must usually be cleared through some agency or regulator in your state, and many states make activity reports available online. They often reveal a specified period of weeks or months in which the group is permitted to solicit, sometimes tracking well with the observations on these call forums. Find those reports and you'll find one more desk to advise of your displeasure.

Despite what AICR and many other groups with the same tactic might say, conning people into pestering neighbors with begging envelopes IS solicitation for funds, by proxy or not. This is not much different from sending the parochial school kids out with boxes of pricey candy bars, using social shame to pry donations to total strangers.

Caller ID showed "Service Message". FYI - AICR has called me several times - using 2 or 3 different numbers. What a racket!!

2010-05-10 20:39:25 UTCThom

They call every day , no voice, just a few clicks.

2010-04-06 22:24:25 UTCC

No message, just another hang up. Have called us several times.

2009-09-24 18:31:23 UTCPM

The last call on 9-18-09 at 8:21am. I don't answer if I don't recognize the name, or I give them about half a second to say something then hang up.

2009-09-18 13:03:10 UTCJD

I have memorized certain area codes so that I can ignore the calls from them. The 202 area code is one of them. Sometimes it's a pre-recorded political message (usually during election years) and then there is this one. I will assume those who have identified it as American Institute for Cancer Research and continue to ignore it. I will attempt to block the number through my landline provider. I have the landline forwarded to my cell phone for my convenience...it doesn't cost me anything to do that. :) I figure if a caller has something truly important to say, they can leave a message.

2009-09-12 00:51:22 UTCJH in Texas

They call often, call is on caller ID, they never leave a message

2009-09-11 00:03:31 UTCfjm

How do we stop this number from calling us??
We are on the National do not call list.
They never leave a message so it can't be anything but some kind of scam.
If it is the American Institute for Cancer Research, we have called them back
and told them not to call this number.

2009-09-10 22:21:21 UTCStokes

This caller is soo scared to leave a message. Maybe the caller knows it's a scam and doesn't want to be called on with questions requesting honest answers?

2009-09-10 19:36:14 UTCmjh

They call every day, when I answer no one is there. Very annoying.

2009-09-10 17:04:30 UTCVM

Called main number above. Woman who answered was a snotty talking smart-ass. I got transferred to a man who seemed pleasant enough. He took my number and said the calls would stop. Time will tell.

This is a very questionable "charity" - AICR (American Institute for Cancer Research". First, they apparently don't do any research (I guess they just think it would be a good idea if someone did some). They appear to me to be a political front group, using a "hot button" issue to raise money and further their political goals. They get a very poor rating on Charity Navigator's web site. And they seem to be another abusive "harassment tactics" fund raiser. Seems like lots of folks lining their pockets here, and not much being done by these bozos to fight cancer.
I would avoid these folks, and wouldn't dream of giving them a penny. If you want to give them hell about calling you, here is their contact info. I'd think twice about emailing them, you'll probably get spammed.

2009-09-03 20:47:21 UTCTJ

"AICR" is rated 1 star (out of a possible 4 stars) by charitynavigator.org...it would seem as tho your hard earned money could be better spent elsewhere :)

2009-09-03 13:00:14 UTCBetsy

Received about 8 calls from this number in a week. Finally called it back to receive an answering machine saying "Tina" couldn't take the call. Who the heck is Tina??????
Would sure appreciate the end of these annoying calls.

2009-08-30 18:09:42 UTCdoowap

They keep calling despite being told to put us on their do not call list. One more call and will file a complaint w/ftc.

2009-08-29 16:27:13 UTCBob

Person called asking for "Mr or Mrs". I asked who was calling. They repeated the question. I asked again who was calling. They said, "That's ok, we'll call back later." I said, That's ok, we won't take your call then either."
Goole reported this as "American Institute for Cancer Research.
Wife says this is a fund raiser who returns very little of each dollar to the actual charity......

2009-08-28 17:39:50 UTCanonymous

Ditto: They call here but they don't answer. Very frustrating! I am also on a "Do not call list." Does anybody know how to get rid of these jokers? I have tried calling them, no answer. Some pre-recorded message , but I can't leave a message for them. Wonder how they got my number? Supposedly it is unlisted, and I pay extra for that.

2009-08-27 15:55:39 UTCLarry

From the American Institute of Cancer Research. They wanted me to be aware of how bad cancer is and if I would be willing to mail out packets to my neighbors. She would send me packets and I could address them am put my stamps... I said "no thanks" before she could tell me how much the packets would cost ME!! I wonder just how much of a percent of the money they collect actually helps cancer research (I bet VERY LITTLE).

2009-08-27 13:30:36 UTCDonna

I looked up AICR on a google search and it came up American Institute of Cancer Research, most likely that is what it is

2009-08-27 05:35:03 UTCAnonymous

They call here @ 8am, or earlier, doesn't matter if you speak to them or not, they will not answer. I am also on a "Do not call list." I work night shift. These people keep calling and waking me up. Does anybody know how to get rid of these jokers? I have tried calling them, no answer. Some pre-recorded message , but I can't leave a message for them. Wonder how they got my number? Supposedly it is unlisted, and I pay extra for that.

2009-08-25 16:35:05 UTCPenneyL

The Do Not Call list will not help when the caller is a charity - according to the DNC website, "The National Do Not Call Registry does not limit calls by political organizations, charities, or telephone surveyors." Why that is so, I don't know, because most of the calls I ever received before the DNC went into effect were from politcial organizations and charities and they are most of the calls I receive now. The charities, especially, call over and over and over, multiple times a day, never leave messages.

2009-08-23 21:46:12 UTCJim

They called at 08:00 am Sunday morning. I am on the do not call list.

2009-08-23 20:12:34 UTCmarcella

I am so sick of these calls. Every day, several times a day . Early morning wake up calls, afternoon, evening. I've had knee surgery and it is sometimes an effort to get to the phone in time so every one of their calls is a hang up , no message. Their number does not allow one to call back and I'm getting angry and frustrated. Another day of this and I'm calling my local news channel.

2009-08-23 19:18:29 UTCjoes

AICR Unknown caller.

2009-08-23 17:56:53 UTCLiz

They call constantly. I've donated my share. How do you get off their calling list?
I'm on the "No call" list also.

2009-08-22 21:34:56 UTCRon

My phone rang and when I picked it up nobody was there!

2009-08-22 15:26:16 UTCMrs. Spencer

They call, we answer, no one on the other end. They call, we let it go to voice mail, they leave no message. STOP THEM FROM CALLING US NOW! They just keep calling and calling. We are also on a no-call list.

2009-07-16 18:59:05 UTCbantraith

They call all the time looking for my cousin who was on every sucker charity list available-have told them he is dead but they don't care-they just keep calling. I have gotten so many calls from them I can't count them-they are also very rude when you say no.

2009-07-14 21:17:00 UTCNelson

We are on the no call list as well. This outfit calls any way. There is no way to tell if the calls are legitimate without calling the 800 number on the aicr.org website. A whois search on the website domain reports the owner is American Institute for Cancer Research. It appears to be a legitimate charity with about 60% of the funds going to research. The President and Exec VP reportedly receive salaries exceeding $275K per year. All this gives AICR a one star rating out of a possible four.
See charitynavigator.org

2009-07-14 12:40:24 UTCJ Phlegar

We are on the "DO NOT CALL" list. These calls come in early in the morning - most days before we are up for the day. I don't know who this is, but would like these calls stopped immediately. Thank you.

so many different numbers from the AICR keep calling and i really wish that they wouls STOP its getting really annoying

2009-07-09 12:33:33 UTCmichelle

They called at 8:30 in the morning. I answered but no one replied.

2009-07-09 02:34:09 UTCc warner

they asked for someone who doesn't live here.

How do I stop them from calling?

  1. Ask the unwanted caller to stop calling and put you on their do not call list (they are legally required to comply).
  2. If your number is registered with the National Do Not Call Registry you can file a complaint with the FTC.
  3. Block them with a call blocker:
